Multilayer Si@SiOx@void@C anode materials synthesized via simultaneously carbonization and redox for Li-ion batteries

Yunfei Yao,Xiangyang Xu,Hongye Zhao,Yuanlin Tong,Yina Li

In the development of high-performance lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), the composition and structure of electrode materials are of critical importance. Silicon has a theoretical specific capacity 10 times that of graphite, nonetheless, its application as an anode material confronts challenge as it undergoes huge volume change and pulverization amidst the alloying and dealloying processes. Herein, a novel method to prepare a multilayer Si-based anode was proposed. Three layers, SiO 2 , nickel and triethylene glycol (TEG), were coated successively on Si nanoparticles , which served respectively as the sources of SiO x , sacrificial templates and carbon. Nickel can not only serve as a hollow template, but also play a catalytic role, which makes carbonization and redox reactions occur synchronously under a mild condition. Amid the carbonization process of TEG at 450 °C, several-nm-thick SiO 2 layer can react with the as-derived carbon to form a silicon suboxides (SiO x (0 < x < 2)) intermedium layer. After removing the nickel template, a micro-nano scaled Si@SiO x @void@C with conformal multilayer-structure can be obtained. The BET specific surface area and pore volume of powders were increased dramatically because of the derivation of abundant voids, which can not only buffer the swelling effect of silicon, but also provide richer ionic conductivity . The as-assembled half-cell with Si@SiOx@void@C as the anode material possesses high capacity (∼1000 mAh g −1 at 3 A g −1 ), long cycle life (300 cycles with 77% capacity retention) and good rate performance (558 mAh g −1 at 5 A g −1 ).

Construction Si–O–Mo bond via etching method: enhancing selective adsorption capacity of MoS2/montmorillonite to Pb2+

S. Yang,Y. Cheng,T. E,Y. Wang,L. Liu,Y. Li,D. Wang,J. Qian

The inert substrate surface of MoS 2 leads to unsatisfactory adsorption performance. Herein, an inert substrate surface activation strategy is proposed, and the resulted MoS 2 /montmorillonite (MMT) prepared via the hydrothermal method is immersed with NaF (F–Mt). The intercalation of Na  +  contributes to inducing the transformation of MoS 2 from 2H phase to 1 T phase, thereby providing a large number of S vacancies and exposing available Mo 4+ . Meanwhile, the surface of MMT is activated due to the fact that partially [Si 4 O 10 ] 4- are etched by F - , which facilitates forming Si–O–Mo bonds to promote the charge transfer. The improved charge transfer rate can make S 2- in MoS 2 accumulate more negative charges, greatly enhancing the adsorption capacity to Pb 2+ . Moreover, the natural negative potential on the surface of MMT solves the problem of easy stacking for nanosheets , improving the availability of active sites on the edge, which are also benefit from the etching effect on MoS 2 nanosheets with NaF. The maximum adsorption capacity achieves 97.09 mg/g. Additionally, density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm the resulted S vacancies in MoS 2 are in favor of removing Pb 2+ , which is also contributed by the electrostatic and chemical adsorption with MMT. Therefore, it suggests that F–Mt is an excellent adsorbent for Pb 2+ .

Ratiometric fluorescence immunoassay of SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid protein via Si-FITC nanoprobe-based inner filter effect

Mao Guobin,Yang Yang,Cao Shijie,Ye Silu,Li Yifang,Zhao Wei,An Hongwei,Liu Yingxia,Dai Junbiao,Ma Yingxin

The global pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus has necessitated rapid, easy-to-use, and accurate diagnostic methods to monitor the virus infection. Herein, a ratiometric fluorescence enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed using Si-fluorescein isothiocyanate nanoparticles (FITC NPs) for detecting SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid (N) protein. Si-FITC NPs were prepared by a one-pot hydrothermal method using 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APTES)-FITC as the Si source. This method did not need post-modification and avoided the reduction in quantum yield and stability. The p-nitrophenyl (pNP) produced by the alkaline phosphatase (ALP)-mediated hydrolysis of p-nitrophenyl phosphate (pNPP) could quench Si fluorescence in Si-FITC NPs via the inner filter effect. In ELISA, an immunocomplex was formed by the recognition of capture antibody/N protein/reporter antibody. ALP-linked secondary antibody bound to the reporter antibody and induced pNPP hydrolysis to specifically quench Si fluorescence in Si-FITC NPs. The change in fluorescence intensity ratio could be used for detecting N protein, with a wide linearity range (0.01–10.0 and 50–300 ng/mL) and low detection limit (0.002 ng/mL). The concentration of spiked SARS-CoV-2 N protein could be determined accurately in human serum. Moreover, this proposed method can accurately distinguish coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and non-COVID-19 patient samples. Therefore, this simple, sensitive, and accurate method can be applied for the early diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 virus infection.

Study on the synthesis and thermal stability of silicone resins reinforced by Si–O–Ph cross-linking

Huadong Zhang,Zhongyi Yan,Zhizhou Yang,Jinshui Yao,Qiuhong Mu,Dan Peng,Hui Zhao

A novel silicone resin (SR-OH) containing phenolic hydroxyl (Ph–OH) groups was designed and synthesized via co-hydrolysis/condensation and catalytic hydrogenation. During the curing process, the cross-linking degree of the resin was further increased by the Si–O–Ph bonds formed by the reaction of the Ph–OH and terminal Si–OH groups. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that the cured resin product exhibited excellent thermal and thermo-oxidative stability, which was much higher than that of a typical methyl phenyl silicone resin (SR-Ph). The temperature at which 5% weight loss occurs (Td5) was up to 606 °C (nitrogen) and 542 °C (air), and its char yield at 800 °C was 91.1% and 85.3% in nitrogen and air, respectively. The significant improvement in thermal stability was mainly attributed to the formation of Si–O–Ph bonds which not only increases the cross-linking degree of the resin but also significantly prevents degradation by the ‘back-biting’ and oxidative cleavage.

Simultaneously optimizing pore morphology and enhancing mechanical properties of Al-Si alloy composite foams by graphene nanosheets

Weiting Li,Xudong Yang,Kunming Yang,Chunnian He,Junwei Sha,Chunsheng Shi,Yunhui Mei,Jiajun Li,Naiqin Zhao

The integrity and regularity of pore morphology play an important role in determining the mechanical properties of the metallic foam materials. The conventional methods on refining pore morphology are mainly focused on the optimization of fabrication techniques, however, they are usually inconvenient and complicated. Recently, incorporating nano reinforcement is considered to be a suitable way to fabricate metallic composite foams accompanied by optimized pore morphology and enhanced mechanical properties. In this work, through a facile and rapid powder metallurgy foaming method, the aluminum-silicon (Al-Si) alloy composite foams reinforced by graphene nanosheets (GNSs) are successfully fabricated. The microstructure analyses reveal that, for the Al-Si alloy foams incorporating the GNSs (GNSs/Al-Si composite foams), the pore size is transformed to be smaller, the pore size distributions become more homogeneous and the pore shape is also refined to a regular and roundish state. Meanwhile, the shape of Si precipitates is found transforming from an irregular long strip (length of ~20 μm, width of ~5 μm) to a fine particle state (diameter of ~5 μm). Moreover, the compressive testing results show that, the 0.4 wt% GNSs/Al-Si composite foams own the optimal compression stress of 11.7 ± 0.5 MPa, plateau stress of 10.0 ± 1.0 MPa and energy absorption capacity of 6.8 ± 0.7 MJ/m 3 , which have improvement of 58.1%, 53.8% and 51.1% in comparison with the Al-Si alloy foams counterpart, respectively. The present findings may pave a new way for developing new generation of metallic composite foams that with stable microstructure and excellent mechanical performance.

An Anode Material for Lithium Storage: Si@N,S-Doped Carbon Synthesized via In Situ Self-Polymerization

Qiao He,Qingyun Wu,Xuxu Wang,Shuting Fu,Senchuan Huang,Shengfu Tong,Yangfei Cao,Zheng Liu,Mingmei Wu

Silicon is one of the most promising candidates for anode materials for next-generation lithium-ion batteries due to its high theoretical capacity. However, the catastrophic volume change upon lithiation/delithiation and the subsequent pulverization result in poor electrochemical performance and hinder its applications. To address this issue, a Si@N,S-doped carbon core–shell structure (Si@NSC) is proposed in this work. The composites are prepared by in situ polymerization and pyrolysis. The as-prepared Si@NSC electrode exhibits a stable capacity of 1720 mAh g–1 at 0.3 A g–1 after 550 cycles with a capacity retention of 90.2%. Compared with commercial silicon and a mixture of Si and C, Si@NSC demonstrates high initial efficiency and superior cyclic stability owing to its unique structure and moderate Si/C ratio. The Si@NSC composites shed light on the application of Si-based anode materials for high-capacity lithium storage.

Insight into efficient degradation of 3,5-dichlorosalicylic acid by Fe-Si-B amorphous ribbon under neutral condition

Libo Zhang,Lianxiang Qiu,Qingyao Zhu,Xiong Liang,Jingxiong Huang,Mengting Yang,Zhenxuan Zhang,Jiang Ma,Jun Shen

Water disinfection would result in unintended formation of halogenated disinfection by-products (DBPs) which pose potential harm to human health. In present work, Fe 78 Si 9 B 13 amorphous ribbons (Fe-Si-B AR ) showed excellent catalytic degradation performance towards an aromatic DBP, 3,5-dichlorosalicylic acid (3,5-DiClSA) by Fenton-like reaction. The catalytic degradation performances of Fe-Si-B AR , Fe 78 Si 9 B 13 crystalline ribbons (Fe-Si-B CR ) and iron powders towards 3,5-DiClSA were compared, and Fe-Si-B AR (0.0166 min −1 ) showed the fastest degradation rate. The faster surface mobility of Fe-Si-B AR , which made it easy for Fe 2+ to be oxidized by H 2 O 2 , facilitated the degradation process. High-valent iron of Fe IV could be generated which accounted for degradation of 3,5-DiClSA. The Fe-Si-B AR also showed better and better catalytic performance in 10 reuse cycles. Besides, the cytotoxicity tests indicated that the overall toxicity level of 3,5-DiClSA was declined by 88.1 % after degradation by Fe-Si-B AR . Our results showed that Fe-Si-B AR is a promising catalyst for the degradation of aromatic DBPs.

Tungstophosphoric acid supported on metal/Si-pillared montmorillonite for conversion of biomass-derived carbohydrates into methyl levulinate

Fengjiao Lai,Feng Yan,Yingqing Wang,Chunyan Li,Jianjun Cai,Zuotai Zhang

Biomass-derived carbohydrates exploited toward the synthesis of alkyl levulinates is very promising, but still limited by the applicable catalyst. In this study, novel metal/Si-pillared montmorillonite supported phosphotungstic acid catalysts (SG-HPW-XSiMt-y, where X = La 3+ , Ce 3+ , Er 3+ , Cu 2+ , Al 3+ , Ti 4+ , Zr 4+ ) were synthesized by sol-gel method. The catalytic performance of SG-HPW-XSiMt-y were comprehensively studied for glucose methanolysis to methyl levulinate (ML), focusing on the effects of metal acidity, HPW contents and reaction conditions. The appropriate Lewis acidity of metal ions effectively facilitated the isomerization of glucose/methyl-glucoside to fructose/methyl-fructoside; the strong Brønsted acidity of incorporated HPW was capable of suppressing the side reactions; and the large specific surface area and hierarchical pores of the mesoporous structure allow the reaction to take place both on surface and inside the porous framework. Among these as-synthesized catalysts, the SG-HPW-ZrSiMt-20 showed the most superior activity and achieved 65.8% yield of ML from glucose at 170 °C for 4 h. Alternative biomass-derived carbohydrates, including fructose, sucrose and cellobiose, also gave excellent ML yields under such catalytic system . The SG-HPW-ZrSiMt-20 had impressively stable reusability with merely loss of catalytic activity after eight cycles, owing to the uniform dispersion and stable bonding of HPW with ZrSiMt support. Generally, this catalyst system realizes an efficient and sustainable conversion of biomass-derived carbohydrates to ML production.

A novel P-S-Si-based cage-structural monomer for flame-retardant modification of unsaturated polyester resin

Gang Zhang,Dongdong Song,Su Ma,Yanlin Wang,Xiaotian Xie,Yanmao Dong

Currently, the issue of improving the flame-retardant performance of unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) has drawn a lot of attention. In this study, methyl vinyl di (1-thio-2,6,7-trioxal-1-phosphabicyclo [2.2] octane-4-methoxy) silane (MVDOS) with P-N-Si-based cage unit was synthesized, and it was utilized as a reactive flame-retardant monomer to modify UPR. The UPR/MVDOS composites were prepared by introducing different ratios of MVDOS into UPR via the reaction of crosslink. The efficiency of the resulted composites was investigated by using the limiting oxygen index (LOI), vertical burning test, and cone calorimeter test. The results showed that the composites reached the V-0 rate without dripping, and the LOI value was 29.1% when the content of MVDOS was as low as 18 wt%. Cone calorimeter tests revealed the peak of heat release and CO production of UPR/MVDOS-18 were 238.2 KW/m 2 and 0.0167 g/s, which were respectively lower than the ones of neat UPR. The introduction of MVDOS also increased the stability of UPR composites. Furthermore, the scattering electron microscopy, laser Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies revealed that the incorporation of MVDOS stimulated the UPR matrix to generate char layer with increased graphitization degree, which provided a good barrier to prevent heat and oxygen from being transferred and then protected the materials inside from further burning. This research provides a new way to obtain flame-retardant UPR composites with high performance.

Thermal shock resistance and bonding strength of tri-layer Yb2SiO5/mullite/Si coating on SiCf/SiC composites

Haitang Yang,Yanping Yang,Xueqiang Cao,Xiaozhong Huang,Yang Li

A Yb 2 SiO 5 /mullite/Si tri-layer environmental-barrier-coating (EBC) were coated on SiC f /SiC substrates via Air Plasma Spraying (APS). The thermal cycle tests (TCT) were conducted under thermal corrosive condition of vapor-oxygen (50 vol% H 2 O and 50 vol% O 2 ) with thermal shock from 1200 °C to 200 °C. Microstructures, weight loss and bonding strength of the samples were systemically investigated after 101, 396, 606 and 700 TCT cycles respectively. The results show that the corner of the tri-layer coating peel off from the sample with weight loss of 1.3% after 700 TCT cycles. The bonding strength between substrate and tri-layer coatings gradually decreases to 6.79 MPa (approximately 55.2% of virgin specimens) after 700 cycles due to thermal shock induced cracks distributed horizontally within Si layers and between Si layer and outer layers.

Robust ceramic based self-lubricating coating on Al–Si alloys prepared via PEO and spin-coating methods

Jingguo Fu,Meng Li,Gengshuo Liu,Shenglin Ma,Xinhe Zhu,Chunsheng Ma,Dong Cheng,Zhijun Yan

Ceramic based self-lubricating coating was successfully fabricated on Al-based plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) ceramic coating in this work. The coating was reinforced with thermosetting polyimide (PI) containing tungsten disulfide (WS 2 ) fillers. The morphology, chemical composition and phase structure of the PEO, PEO/PI and PEO/PI/WS 2 coatings were observed by SEM, EDS and XRD , respectively. Tribological properties of the coatings were comparatively investigated using a reciprocating pin-on-block tribotester under different conditions. Under dry sliding conditions, the friction coefficient of PEO/PI/WS 2 coating was about 0.4, which was 50% lower than that of PEO coating. Meanwhile, the wear rate of counter pin cooperated with PEO/PI/WS 2 coating was only 0.04 mg min −1 , which was 90.9% lower than that of PEO coating. Under step loading conditions, the load was ultimately increased to 70 N and the total duration time was about 35 min, while the corresponding values of PEO coating were 30 N and 13 min, respectively. These are owed to the hard ceramic coating and the soft self-lubricating coating, which can improve the load capacity and decrease the friction, of the ceramic based self-lubricating coating.

Mn-promoted Ag supported on pure siliceous Beta zeolite (Ag/Beta-Si) for catalytic combustion of formaldehyde

Ling Zhang,Yiquan Xie,Yiwen Jiang,Yaobin Li,Chunying Wang,Shichao Han,Huimin Luan,Xiangju Meng,Feng-Shou Xiao

Catalytic combustion at low temperature has been considered as an effective route for removal of indoor HCHO pollutant, and conventional catalysts are supported noble metal nanoparticles, which are costly for wide applications. Solution of this issue is to use relatively low metal catalysts. Herein, we report that Mn-promoted Ag catalyst supported on pure silica Beta zeolite with a good hydrophobicity is very active for catalytic combustion of HCHO. By optimizing the loadings of Ag and Mn, it is found that 10 wt% Ag with 8 wt% Mn (10 %Ag8 %Mn/Beta-Si) exhibits highest activity, giving the complete HCHO conversion at around 45 °C, which steadily outperform the temperatures (70–145 °C) for full oxidation of HCHO reported previously. The choice of Ag loading with 10 wt.% is due to the highest exposed surface of Ag sites, and the use of Mn loading with 8 wt% is assigned to the balance of density and mobility for active oxygen species in the catalysts. The strategy combining the hydrophobic supports with optimized active oxygen species might offer an alternative way to develop highly efficient heterogeneous catalysts for the removal of air pollutants in the future.
