ABSTRACT The construction of a three-dimensional heterojunction interface and chemical modification can significantly enhance the electromagnetic wave absorption capability of composites. In this study, we successfully synthesized a covalently bonded carboxyl functionalized Ti 3 C 2 T x (CFTC) complexed with Amino-Fe 3 O 4 (CFTC-Fe 3 O 4 ) through an amidation reaction followed by a post-annealing process, resulting in the homogeneous dispersion of NH 2 -Fe 3 O 4 between CFTC layers. The innovative approach establishes a multi-layer heterojunction interface that effectively encapsulates magnetic nanoparticles with CFTC, thereby enhancing both interface polarization, defect polarization and conduction loss. The magnetoelectric synergy between CFTC and NH 2 -Fe 3 O 4 improves impedance matching and endows the composites with exceptional electromagnetic wave absorption capabilities. Notably, the absorbers demonstrate an impressive minimum reflection loss of -50.95 dB at a thickness of 1.56 mm when the mass ratio of CFTC to NH 2 -Fe 3 O 4 is 1:1 (designated as CTNF-2), accompanied by an effective absorption bandwidth of 4.76 GHz (12.32-17.08 GHz). This study presents a novel approach to developing highly efficient MXene-based absorbing materials through chemical modifications.

The industrialization of hydrogen production technology through polymer electrolyte membrane water splitting faces challenges due to high iridium (Ir) loading on the anode catalyst layer. While rational design of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts aimed at effective iridium utilization is promising, it remains a challenging task. Herein, we present exfoliated Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene as a highly conductive and corrosion-resistant support for acidic OER. We develop an alcohol reduction method to achieve uniform and dense loading of ultrafine Ir nanoparticles on the MXene surface. The IrO 2 /TiO x heterointerface is formed in situ on the Ir@Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene surface, acting as a catalytically active phase for OER during electrocatalysis. The electron interactions at the IrO 2 /TiO x heterointerface create electron-rich Ir sites, which reduce the adsorption properties of oxygen intermediates and enhance intrinsic OER activity. Consequently, the prepared Ir@Ti 3 C 2 T x exhibits a mass activity that is 7 times greater than that of the benchmark IrO 2 catalyst for OER in acidic media. In addition, the /Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene support can stabilize the Ir nanoparticles, so that the stability number of Ir@Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene is about 2.4 times higher than that of the IrO 2 catalyst.

The rapid growth of industries and population has led to severe water pollution, especially from the oil and dyes pollution. Recently, MXene with hydrophilicity layer structure and excellent adsorption capacity has been regarded as a promising material for high efficiency dye adsorption and oil–water separation. In this study, aminated-SiO 2 nanorods and monolayer Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene were combined by a facile self-assembly method to prepare a new composite (NS x /MXene) for dye adsorption and oil–water separation. The results show that the adsorption capacity of the NS x /MXene composite was enhanced due to the introduction of aminated-SiO 2 nanorods with more active sites. Especially, the NS 2 /MXene composite has a maximum adsorption capacity up to 4532.5 mg g −1 for AB74 dye, which is attributed to the electrostatic interaction between NS 2 /MXene and AB74 dye molecules. In addition, NS 2 /MXene modified polyurethane sponge (NS 2 /MXene@PU) was prepared by immersing dried polyurethane (PU) sponge in the NS 2 /MXene suspension. The NS 2 /MXene@PU sponge has a characteristic of superhydrophilicity in air and superoleophobicity in water, and shows a high separation flux of 27.44 × 10 4 L m −2 h −1 for a cyclohexane-water mixture. After 30 cycle experiments, the separation flux of NS 2 /MXene@PU for the cyclohexane-water mixture can still be 21.66 × 10 4 L m −2 h −1 , indicating an excellent cycling stability of NS 2 /MXene@PU. Hence, this new NS 2 /MXene material has excellent application prospects in dye adsorption and oil–water separation.

Improving the dispersibility and compatibility of nanomaterials in water-borne epoxy resins is an important means to improve the protection ability and corrosion resistance of coatings. In this study, glycine-functionalized Ti3C2Tx (GT) was used to prepare an epoxy composite coating. The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction showed that glycine was successfully modified. The scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy results showed that the aggregation of Ti3C2Tx was alleviated. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy test results show that, after 60 days of immersion, GT coating still shows the best protection performance, and the composite coating |Z|f = 0.01 Hz is 3 orders of magnitude higher than that of the pure epoxy coating. This is mainly because, after adding glycine, the −COOH group on the surface of glycine binds to the −OH group on the surface of Ti3C2Tx, improving the aggregation of Ti3C2Tx itself. At the same time, the −NH group of glycine can also participate in the curing reaction of epoxy resin to strengthen the bonding strength between the coating and the metal. The good dispersion of GT in epoxy resin makes it fill the pores and holes left by epoxy resin curing and strengthen the corrosion resistance. The easy availability and green properties of glycine provide a simple and environmentally friendly method for the modification of Ti3C2Tx.

The MXene Ti3C2Txwas synthesized using hydrofluoric acid and an improved multilayer method in this study. Subsequently, a Bi2O3/Ti3C2Txcomposite material was produced through hydrothermal synthesis. This composite boasts a unique layered structure, offering a large surface area that provides numerous contact and reaction sites, facilitating the adsorption of ammonia on its surface. The prepared Bi2O3/Ti3C2Tx-based sensor exhibits excellent sensing performance for ammonia gas, including high responsiveness, good repeatability, and rapid response–recovery time. The sensor’s response to 100 ppm ammonia gas is 61%, which is 11.3 times and 1.6 times the response values of the Ti3C2Txgas sensor and Bi2O3gas sensor, with response/recovery times of 61 s/164 s at room temperature, respectively. Additionally, the gas sensitivity mechanism of the Bi2O3/Ti3C2Tx-based sensor was analyzed, and the gas sensing response mechanism was proposed. This study shows that the sensor can effectively enhance the accuracy and precision of ammonia detection at room temperature and has a wide range of application scenarios.

Because of electromagnetic wave pollution, there is a growing need for electromagnetic wave absorption materials. An effective strategy is to optimize their microstructure and composition. In this study, hollow polypyrrole (PPy) nanocubes (HP) are synthesized using zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) as sacrificial templates. Subsequently, HP/Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene (HPM) composites are fabricated through electrostatic self-assembly and freeze-drying methods. The resulting 3D conductive network and numerous heterogeneous interfaces enhance interfacial polarization, and the hollow morphology facilitates electromagnetic wave multiple reflections, thereby significantly improving electromagnetic wave absorption performance. HPM-2 realizes a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −53.45 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 6.52 GHz at 1.84 mm. HPM-3 achieves a RL min of −72.28 dB at 2.75 nm and an EAB of 4.7 GHz at 1.61 mm. Moreover, the simulation procedures are applied to investigate the radar cross-section (RCS) attenuation. It is worth noting that with a detection angle (θ) of 0°, HPM-3 possesses a maximum RCS reduction of 35.19 dB m². This work presents a straightforward method for preparing HPM composites and lays the foundation for exploring the efficient electromagnetic wave absorption properties of conducting polymer and MXene-based composites and their derivatives.

Interlayer and defect engineering significantly affects the electrical conductivity and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding of Ti3C2Tx MXene. Previous studies have prioritized the size of the intercalant over its synergy with chemical affinity, limiting the elucidation of the intercalation mechanism and the precise control of the interlayer spacing (d-spacing). Herein, we synthesize MXene aerogels with a tunable d-spacing and defect density using a series of amine molecules of different sizes and chemical affinities as intercalants and cross-linkers. Particularly, the intercalation of p-phenylenediamine (PPD) increases the d-spacing of MXene from 0.960 to 1.642 nm. Simultaneously, the increased d-spacing contributes to an increased defect density within the Ti–Ti layer. Hence, the PPD@MXene aerogel exhibits reduced surface electric field intensity and increased internal polarization loss, resulting in absorption-dominated EMI shielding. The absorptivity reaches 0.92, far exceeding the reported shielding materials, with a shielding effectiveness of 50.4 dB. This study provides a theoretical foundation and preliminary guidance for the development of interlayer-engineered MXene shielding materials.

Transition metal selenides have high theoretical capacities, making them attractive candidates for energy storage applications. Here, using the microwave-absorbing properties of the materials, we designed a simple and efficient microwave-assisted synthesis method to produce a composite made of nanospheres Ni0.5Co0.5Se2(NCSe) and highly conductive, stable Ti3C2TxMXene. The Ni0.5Co0.5Se2/Ti3C2Txcomposites are characterized via scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, cyclic voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The findings indicate that 3D Ni0.5Co0.5Se2bimetallic selenide nanospheres were uniformly loaded within the few-layer Ti3C2TxMXene wrapper in a short period. The optimal NCSe/Ti3C2Tx−2 electrode can demonstrate a specific capacitance of 752.4 F g–1at 1 A g–1. Furthermore, the asymmetric supercapacitor combined with activated carbon maintains a capacitance retention of 110% even after 5000 cycles. The method of directly growing active substances on few-layer Ti3C2TxMXene will provide inspiration for the manufacture of high-pseudocapacitance supercapacitors.

The hydrophilicity of two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal carbides, carbonitrides, and nitrides (MXene) nanochannels plays a critical role in water transport during filtration, yet its specific effects on MXene membranes remain inadequately understood. Herein, we systematically investigated water transport through Ti3C2TX MXene nanochannels using molecular dynamics simulations coupled with experimental validation, addressing a significant knowledge gap in MXene-based separation membranes. Our simulations demonstrated that strong interactions between water molecules and hydrophilic nanochannel MXene surfaces (Ti3C2(OH)2 MXene or Ti3C2(NH)2 MXene) facilitated the formation of ordered molecular arrangements, substantially improving water permeability. Conversely, hydrophobic nanochannels (Ti3C2O2 MXene or Ti3C2F2 MXene) exhibited disordered water molecule distributions, leading to reduced permeability. Experimental validation corroborated these simulation results, demonstrating a direct correlation between the hydrophilicity of the Ti3C2TX surface and the water flux. The highly hydrophilic Ti3C2(OH)2 MXenes exhibited water flux maximum, whereas the more hydrophobic Ti3C2F2 MXenes had the lowest water flux. By integrating molecular dynamics simulations with experimental analyses, we gained comprehensive insights into the influence of nanochannel hydrophilicity on water transport mechanisms in MXene membranes. These findings provide critical guidelines for designing high-performance MXene-based membranes for advanced water treatment and separation applications.

Electromagnetic pollution is escalating in the advent of the 5 G and forthcoming 6 G era. Ti 3 C 2 T X MXene, an emergent two-dimensional material, has been extensively applied in the field of electromagnetic absorption and shielding owing to its high electrical conductivity, adjustable interlayer spacing, and substantial surface area. However, its practical application as an absorber is severely limited by challenges including face-to-face restacking, surface modification difficulties, and poor impedance matching. Here, carbon-coated NiFe alloy nanoparticles (NiFe@C NPs), fabricated using the DC arc-discharge technique, are electrostatically self-assembled with MXene. This process effectively reduces self-stacking and enhances impedance matching properties. The robust magnetic coupling within NiFe alloy compensates for the deficiency in the magnetic loss capacity of carbon and MXene, while defects in the carbon layer and terminal groups on MXene's surface facilitate dipolar polarization. Furthermore, the heterogeneous interfaces between NiFe@C NPs and MXene produce localized dielectric polarization fields that are conducive to enhancing interfacial polarization. Additionally, the multilayered structure of MXene promotes multiple reflections and scattering of incident electromagnetic waves. When the NiFe@C/MXene composite has a thickness of 2.3 mm, it reaches a minimum reflection loss of −38.40 dB. Computer Simulation Technology (CST) results confirm the high radar cross section reduction value (17.21 dB·m 2 ), indicating the potential of multi-component NiFe/carbon/MXene composite for microwave absorption.

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has great potential as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries due to its graphite-like layered structure and high specific capacity (669.0 mA h g−1). However, challenges such as volume expansion during lithium storage have impeded its utilization. The combined alteration of MoS2 and MXenes has demonstrated its efficacy as a modification technique. In this study, a green and facile phase engineering strategy has been implemented for the synthesis of MoS2/Ti3C2Tx nanocomposites. Ti3C2Tx was rapidly prepared by the fluorine-free molten salt etching method, and then the MoS2/Ti3C2Tx composite was synthesized by the one-pot method. Fluffy and open petal-like interconnect structures were constructed by combining few-layer MoS2 nanosheets with Ti3C2Tx substrate. The introduction of the substrate material (Ti3C2Tx) provides a uniform growth platform for MoS2 nanosheets, and Ti3C2Tx, acting as the supporting material, imparts enhanced structural stability to the composite. Theoretical calculations indicate that this configuration may result in a reduction of the diffusion energy barrier of Li+ from 0.78 eV to 0.19 eV, as well as an enhanced electron transfer. This composite material exhibits enhanced capacity performance, achieving 460.6 mA h g−1 at 0.1 A g−1 after 100 cycles. This approach offers valuable insights into the synthesis of additional high-performance composite materials.

The contamination of wastewater by organic pollutants significantly impacts human health and the environment due to their carcinogenic nature and various adverse effects. To address this issue, this study offers a high-efficiency and low-cost biomass-based carbon aerogel adsorbent, which was prepared through the hydrothermal carbonization of loofah, followed by Ti 3 C 2 T X MXene impregnation. The aerogel features a porous three-dimensional network structure and a substantial specific surface area, facilitating broad-spectrum adsorption capabilities for various dyes and drugs. The aerogel achieved impressive adsorption capacities of 175.29 and 75.73 mg/g for cationic methylene blue and Rhodamine B dyes, and 106.33 and 93.29 mg/g for anionic methyl orange and Congo red dyes, as well as 86.25 mg/g for tetracycline hydrochloride, surpassing other reported biomass-based aerogels. Furthermore, it demonstrated effective decolorization ability for wastewater containing mixed dyes. Notably, it exhibited excellent recycling and regeneration properties, maintaining a high removal rate after multiple cycles of adsorption–desorption. The adsorption process of dye/drug by the aerogel followed Langmuir’s monomolecular layer adsorption model, exhibiting spontaneous, endothermic, and disorder-increasing behavior in alignment with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. This study presents an efficient biomass-based aerogel for the removal of organic pollutants from wastewater.
