Optimization of benzyl isothiocyanate O/W BITC nanoemulsions using natural emulsifiers: impact on particle size, encapsulation efficiency, stability, and antioxidant properties

Yang Bowen,Tang Yaqi,Cao Xinru,Tian Tian,Jiang Lianzhou Z.

In this work, oil-in-water (O/W) benzyl isothiocyanate (BITC) nanoemulsions (10% MCT) were prepared with four natural emulsifiers: chitosan, gum arabic, soybean protein isolate (SPI), and SPI-phosphatidylcholine (SPI-PC). We evaluated the effects of emulsifier type and concentration (0.25–4 wt%) on the nanoemulsions’ encapsulation efficiency, rheological behavior, stability, and antioxidant capacity. Results showed that at the same concentration, protein-based (SPI/SPI-PC) nanoemulsions had smaller particle size, higher absolute ζ-potential, and better encapsulation efficiency than polysaccharide-based (chitosan/gum arabic) counterparts. All four emulsifiers delivered the smallest particle size and highest encapsulation efficiency at 1 wt%, with SPI-PC nanoemulsion reaching 234.17 ± 1.27 nm and 93.21 ± 2.27%, respectively. Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) confirmed SPI-PC nanoemulsion had smaller, uniform droplets, with the lowest Turbiscan Stability Index (TSI, 0.20 ± 0.01, excellent stability). It also showed the lowest viscosity and shear stress, and highest 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH, 71.60 ± 1.81%) and 2,2’-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS + , 79.43 ± 2.40%) radical scavenging activity. These results confirm the SPI-PC complex forms a more efficient, stable emulsification system, providing support for developing natural food-grade emulsifiers and lipophilic bioactive delivery carriers. Effect of chitin nanowhiskers isolated through dilute acid pretreatment on the properties of O/W Pickering emulsions co-stabilized with gelatin

Yi Qin,Siyu Liu,Liang Liu,Shuiping Ouyang,Wenwen Zhang,Yimin Fan

This study developed a dilute acid pretreatment method (0.3 M HCl) for the efficient production of nanochitin, achieving a yield of 87.14%. The obtained nanofibrils measured 271.15 ± 13.64 nm in length and 10.25 ± 0.50 nm in width, with a crystallinity of 87.15%. This strategy demonstrated a comparable hydrolysis effect to the conventional 3 M HCl method. A Pickering emulsion with smaller droplets and excellent emulsification performance was prepared by homogenizing nanochitin and gelatin at a total mass concentration of 1%. When the nanochitin-to-gelatin ratio was 5:5, the storage modulus of the emulsion was approximately 2.5 times that of the system stabilized by gelatin alone. Furthermore, increasing the mass concentration above 2% resulted in the formation of an emulsion gel, which exhibited significantly enhanced rheological performance and stability.

Effects of different pH conditions on interfacial composition and protein-lipid co-oxidation of whey protein isolate-stabilised O/W emulsions

Jiaxin Chen,Xin Li,Chuanai Cao,Baohua Kong,Hui Wang,Hongwei Zhang,Qian Liu

The physical stability, interfacial composition and protein-lipid co-oxidation of O/W emulsions stabilised by whey protein isolate under different pH conditions (3.0, 5.0, 7.0 and 9.0) with fixed storage times were assessed in the present study. The results revealed that different pH conditions had distinct effects on the physical stability of the emulsions, as verified by the droplet size, ζ-potential and interfacial composition. Acidic conditions had an unnoticeable impact on protein-lipid co-oxidation. Remarkable physical barrier-like protection of the lipid core provided by adsorbed proteins (AP) was observed in the O/W emulsions under neutral conditions. However, alkaline conditions (pH 9.0) could induce the most severe protein-lipid co-oxidation when the storage time was extended, as indicated by the highest levels of protein and lipid oxidation products (carbonyl, N′-formyl- l -kynurenine, lipid hydroperoxides, thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances and volatile lipid oxidation products), in addition to the obvious molecular changes in unadsorbed proteins (UAP) or AP. Free radicals and metal ions could more easily react with highly unfolded and negatively charged AP under strong alkaline conditions. Our findings clearly revealed that the co-oxidation phenomenon of O/W emulsion systems were closely related to the synergistic effects between the transformation of interfacial composition and aggregation of oil droplets that occurred under different pH conditions.

In situ W/O Co-doped hollow carbon nitride tubular structures with enhanced visible-light-driven photocatalytic performance for hydrogen evolution

Haoshan Wei,Yong Zhang,Guoao Zhang,Jiewu Cui,Yan Wang,Yongqiang Qin,Xueru Zhang,Hark Hoe Tan,Jiaqin Liu,Yucheng Wu

Heteroatom co-doping has been considered as an effective strategy to simultaneously overcome intrinsic shortcomings of g-C 3 N 4 to achieve enhanced photocatalytic properties, in which the involved dopants could play its role in altering electronic structure, optical absorption and charge separation of the catalyst. Herein, W/O co-doped hollow g-C 3 N 4 tubular structures are successfully obtained for the first time via a one-step thermal decomposition. By W/O co-doping, architecture of g-C 3 N 4 is able to be modulated with enhanced optical absorption towards visible region. In addition, narrowed band gap and restrained charge recombination are conducive for the excitation of electron-hole pairs and transportation. Photocatalytic water splitting tests indicate that the co-doped hollow tubular g-C 3 N 4 structures enable superior activity for generating hydrogen up to 403.57 μmol g −1  h −1 driven by visible light, nearly 2.5 times as high as that of pristine g-C 3 N 4 . This work presents a rational strategy to design co-doped g-C 3 N 4 as an efficient visible-light-driven photocatalyst .

Construction of propolis flavonoids-phospholipid complex loaded O/W submicron emulsion for enhancing in-vivo dilution stability and gastrointestinal absorption efficiency

Liting Yuan,Yan Zhong,Shaobin Lin,Shufeng Chen,Xiaofang Li,Xiaoming Wang,Fengjian Deng,Wanting Wang,Yusheng Li,Linghao Qin

Although numerous propolis flavonoids (EEP) formulations have been developed as dietary supplements for assisting blood glucose regulation, their bioavailability and bioactivity are limited due to the lower solubilities in aqueous media. To address this challenge, a novel O/W submicron emulsion was constructed to efficiently deliver propolis flavonoids and improve the absorption efficiency. Results showed that this delivery vehicle exerted inspiring features of nano-scaled droplet size , narrow particle distribution and higher cargo loading efficiency. Compared to conventional preparations, EEP submicron emulsion exhibited excellent stability against dilution with different pH buffers and maintained physicochemical characteristics within six months. Most importantly, EEP submicron emulsion could be efficiently absorbed through gastrointestinal (GI) tract via multiple-uptake routes and dramatically enhanced the bioavailability of propolis flavonoids. In conclusion, O/W submicron emulsion is a promising carrier for improving the in vivo utilization efficiency of water-insoluble flavonoids in functional foods.

Rheological alteration in W/O emulsions using controlled aggregation and heteroaggregation of cellulose ethers with protein and polysaccharide in aqueous phases

Shahid Iqbal,Musa Kaleem Baloch,Shakil Abbas,Malik Jehanzeb Khurram,Rizwan Ahmed,Xiao Dong Chen

Despite the potential benefits of using cellulose ethers and their combination with other polysaccharides and proteins in the creation of reduced-fat water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions, research in this specific area is currently limited. Further studies are needed to explore the optimal combinations and concentrations of these materials to achieve emulsions with desired texture and higher rheological properties. To address this research gap, seven W/O emulsions with a 40 wt% water phase at pH 3.5 are prepared. The water phase consisted of 2 wt% methylcellulose (MC) or hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) combined with 10 wt% whey protein isolate (WPI) and/or kappa-carrageenan (kC). The oil phase, comprising 60 wt%, contained 8 wt% polyglycerol polyricinoleate (PGPR) in soybean oil . The emulsions were initially prepared at room temperature and subsequently subjected to a heating process at an elevated temperature of 90 °C for a duration of 30 min. Following this heating step, the emulsions were then cooled back to room temperature. This sequential temperature treatment was employed with the intention of inducing aggregation and gelation within the emulsions. The temperature oscillation measurements (G* versus temperature) provide further evidence for the role of covalent and noncovalent bonding in the rheology and gelation of WPI-based emulsions. The viscosity and moduli of unheated and heated emulsions containing combinations of HPMC were found to be higher compared to those containing MC combinations. This behavior can be attributed to the stronger intermolecular interaction between HPMC, WPI, and/or kC, as well as their attachment with PGPR. These interactions lead to the formation of a more viscous and firmer W–O interface in emulsions.

Enhanced photocarrier separation in Br substitution-induced [W(VI)O6−x] units for highly efficient photocatalytic nitrate reduction under alkaline conditions

Xiao Li,Jin Chang,Hexin Zhang,Jing Feng,Jun Ma,Chengying Bai,Yueming Ren

Photocatalytic nitrate (NO 3 - ) reduction is considered a promising green and non-polluting technology to solve the nitrate pollution of groundwater and surface water. Herein, a novel Br-substituted Bi 2 WO 6−x ultrathin nanosheets were prepared by a simple hydrothermal method in a strong acid environment containing sixteen alkyl three methyl bromide (CTAB). The catalytic system solves the problems of low carrier separation efficiency, poor performance under alkaline conditions, and a hard-to-activate N = O bond, achieving efficient NO 3 - removal under alkaline conditions along with high N 2 selectivity . It was confirmed that Br-substituted Bi 2 WO 6−x produced the [W (VI) O 6−x ] units with a strong electron-withdrawing property by changing the polarity of the O-W-O bond. As a result, the effective space charge separation caused by the change of the W valence state and the spontaneous fracture behavior of the N = O bond improved the carriers utilization efficiency and distinctly reduced the reaction energy consumption, synergistically achieving excellent performance.

Ultra-dispersed W-doped carbon nitride anchoring on ceramic via the regulation of electrostatic field for efficient degradation of cationic surfactant

Ling Tian,Xiunan Cai,Wuxiang Zhang,Yanjuan Zhang,Tao Gan,Huayu Hu,Zuqiang Huang

To improve the dispersion and electronic transmission performance of carbon nitride (C 3 N 4 ), an electrostatic field regulation strategy was developed for constructing an ultra-dispersed and high reactive W-doped C 3 N 4 /ceramic (W/C 3 N 4 @ceramic) composite, which was used as a photocatalyst for degrading low-concentration cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) under visible light irradiation to achieve the goal of “enhanced enrichment/catalytic degradation”. The ceramic with strong electrostatic field can rapidly capture the interlayer electrons and break the hydrogen bonds in the lamellar skeletons of massive C 3 N 4 , leading to the structure of C 3 N 4 from bulk to nanosheet. W/C 3 N 4 @ceramic exhibited outstanding adsorption capacity (CTAB removal rate of 68.2% within 30 min in the dark) and photocatalytic activity (CTAB degradation rate of 93.9% within 90 min under light irradiation), which were much higher than those adsorbed (21.9%) and photocatalyzed (46.6%) by W/C 3 N 4 . The improved photocatalytic activity can be ascribed to that the ultra-dispersed nanosheets shortened the charge transfer path to accelerate the transmission and separation efficiency of photogenerated charges and increase specific surface area to provide abundant active sites. Moreover, CTAB can be spontaneously adsorbed on the surface of ceramic driven by electrostatic field, thus accelerating the interfacial transport and promoting photocatalytic efficiency. This work provides a novel strategy for the development of efficient catalysts with enhanced adsorption capacity and photocatalytic activity.

Amorphous/crystalline heterophase W-Zn(Ti)O for the removal of Cr(VI) and tetracycline in single and mixed pollutant systems

Jie Xiong,Hong-Yan Zeng,Chen-Fei Liu,Jin-Feng Peng,Zhuo-Lin Yang,Wan-Ying Ji

A new approach for constructing amorphous/crystalline heterophase W-Zn(Ti)O photocatalyst was develpoed via calcination topological transformation of the self-sacrificial WO 4 2− -pillared ZnTi-LDH (WO 4 -LDH) precursor together with in-situ W-doping. The amorphous/crystalline heterophase formation could expose enriched active sites, which promoted the transfer and separation of photogenerated e − - h + pairs. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further verified that in-situ W-doping regulated the electronic structure and reduced bandgap energy, which made the transport of photogenerated carriers more rapid. Benefiting from the construction of the amorphous/crystalline heterophase, the W-Zn(Ti)O had suitable photo-oxidation/reduction activities, achieving 99.7% removal rate for Cr(VI) reduction, 78.1% for TC oxidation, and simultaneous Cr(VI) reduction (78.0% removal) and TC oxidation (63.2% removal) for 120 min under visible-light. This work provides a new idea for the design of amorphous/crystalline heterophase nanomaterials.

Study on H2O2, Ce, W modified MnOx/TiO2 based NH3-SCR Catalyst: The status and effect of doped promoters and synergies

Luyao Jin,Xintao Xu,Yanghui Wang,Jiaying Li,Kaihao Fan,Bo Hu,Yi Shen,Xuesong Liu

A series of MnO x /TiO 2 based NO x reduction catalyst was prepared by excessive impregnation method. The catalyst was modified by Ce, W and oxidizing agent H 2 O 2 . Mn-Ce/Ti-H and Mn-Ce-W/Ti-H catalysts exhibit the best low temperature activity (nearly 80% NO x conversion at 155–325 °C) and the widest active temperature range (nearly 80% NO x conversion at 180–420 °C), respectively. Property and structure of the modified catalyst were characterized by XRD, TEM, XPS, H 2 -TPR, NH 3 -TPD, etc. It is found that oxidizing agent H 2 O 2 , as well as the high dispersion and specific surface area, can increase the amount of Mn 4+ , Ce 3+ and active oxygen sites on catalyst surface, and the synergistic interaction between Mn and Ce facilitated redox process of the catalysts. These can improve the low temperature activity of the catalyst by facilitating “fast SCR” reaction. The addition of W increased acidity of the catalyst and improved high temperature catalytic activity of the catalyst.

Hierarchical sheet-like W-doped NiCo2O4 spinel synthesized by high-valence oxyanion exchange strategy for highly efficient electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction

Jiabing Luo,Xingzhao Wang,Yufeng Gu,Shutao Wang,Yanpeng Li,Tingyong Wang,Yang Liu,Yan Zhou,Jun Zhang

Limited specific surface area, active site amount, and intrinsic conductivity inhibit spinels' electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity. Herein, we proposed a high-valence oxyanion exchange strategy for preparing hierarchical sheet-like W-NiCo 2 O 4 -2 spinel OER electrocatalyst, which exhibits favorable activity (306 mV overpotential@10 mA cm −2 ) and durability in 1.0 M KOH solution, and shows an application prospect in a home-made anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyzer. BET results showed that the hierarchical structure increased specific surface area and corresponding edge active sites amount, accelerated mass transport and charge transfer. XPS, ex-situ Raman spectroscopy, and HRTEM characterizations dispicted that W 6+ doping optimizes e g orbital electron filling and promotes M−OOH (M = Co, W) active species generation. DFT calculations reveal that W 6+ doping modulates the adsorption of oxygen intermediates, improving the reaction kinetics, and increasing the density of electronic states nearby the Fermi level, thus enhancing conductivity. This work provides a universal pathway for modulating spinel-based OER electrocatalysts.

One-Step Generation of O/W/O Double Pickering Emulsions Utilizing Biocompatible Gliadin/Ethyl Cellulose Complex Particles as the Exclusive Stabilizer

Fu-Zhen Zhou,Li-Hua Xie,Xin-Hao Yu,Xiao-Quan Yang,Shou-Wei Yin

Double emulsions hold great potential for various applications due to their compartmentalized internal structures. However, achieving their long-term physical stability remains a challenging task. Here, we present a simple one-step method for producing stable oil-in-water-in-oil (O/W/O) double emulsions using biocompatible gliadin/ethyl cellulose complex particles as the sole stabilizer. The resulting O/W/O systems serve as effective platforms for encapsulating enzymes and as templates for synthesizing porous microspheres. We investigated the impact of particle concentration and water fraction on the properties of Pickering O/W/O emulsions. Our results demonstrate that the number and volume of inner oil droplets increased proportionally with both the water fraction and particle concentration after a 60-day storage period. Moreover, the catalytic reaction rate of the encapsulated lipase within the double emulsion exhibited a significant acceleration, achieving a substrate conversion of 80.9% within 15 min. Remarkably, the encapsulated enzyme showed excellent recyclability, enabling up to 10 cycles of reuse. Additionally, by utilizing the O/W/O systems as templates, we successfully obtained porous microspheres whose size can be controlled by the outer water droplet. These findings have significant implications for the future design of Pickering complex emulsion-based systems, opening avenues for extensive applications in pharmaceuticals, food, cosmetics, material synthesis, and (bio)catalysis.
