Carbon Skeleton and Oxygen Vacancy Enhanced Z-Scheme TiO2/C-CN Heterojunction for Selective Lactic Acid Production

Dingbin Zhu,Yue Wang,Fuxiu Cao,Wanjun Xu,Wenlong Jia,Huai Liu,Rui Zhang,Lincai Peng,Tianping Lv,Tianwei He,Junhua Zhang

The photocatalytic conversion of biomass-derived monosaccharides to lactic acid (LA) provides a sustainable approach for the high-value utilization of biomass. However, conventional photocatalysts suffer from insufficient visible light absorption, rapid recombination of photogenerated charge carriers, and inadequate surface active sites, which severely hinder the generation of key active species, thereby limiting the catalytic activity and LA selectivity. Herein, this study constructs a Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst TiO 2 /C-CN by combining carbon skeleton and oxygen vacancy (V O )–modified TiO 2 with graphitic carbon nitride (CN), with excellent photocatalytic performance. Under visible light irradiation, it achieves 92.3% LA yield and 96.4% selectivity within 60 min. The carbon skeleton effectively enhances visible light absorption and electron transport, V O provides abundant active sites for the adsorption and activation of oxygen, and the construction of the Z-scheme heterojunction achieves efficient charge separation while retaining strong redox capability. The synergistic effect of these three components facilitates the efficient generation of superoxide radicals ( ), which selectively cleave the C3  C4 bond of glucose intermediates, directing the reaction toward LA formation. This study provides a rational strategy to design efficient and precise photocatalysts for biomass valorization through the synergistic regulation of electron transport channels, defect sites, and heterojunction engineering.

Photogenerated carrier-directed modulation of WO3/Bi2WO6 Z-scheme heterojunction for marine anti-corrosion and anti-fouling

Tian Jing,Cheng Yuanhang,Zhang Zhenyu,Zhao Zhibo,Xu Zhenxu,Li Jiarun

Metal corrosion and biofouling in marine environments significantly constrain the long-term service performance of marine equipment. Traditional protection strategies suffer from issues such as low efficiency and insufficient environmental friendliness, necessitating the development of novel, highly efficient, and stable anti-corrosion and anti-fouling materials. In this study, a dual-functional WO 3 /Bi 2 WO 6 Z-scheme heterojunction photoelectrode was fabricated via a two-step hydrothermal method. The results of UV–visible diffuse reflectance, Mott-Schottky, as well as density functional theory calculations confirmed the successful construction of the Z-type heterojunction. The construction of the Z-scheme heterojunction not only enhances the separation efficiency of photogenerated charge carriers but also directionally regulates their migration pathway, preserving photogenerated electrons with strong reducing capability and photogenerated holes with strong oxidizing capability, therefore, the potential of 316L stainless steel could be negatively shifted by 200 mV, while the sterilization rate of Pseudomonas aeruginosa reached 100% within 60 min.

Asymmetric Reduction of (E/Z)-citral to (R)-Citronellal by a Cyanobacterial-Derived Old Yellow Enzyme, CtOYE

Wu S. J.,Chen F.,Ma X. J.,Sun S. Y.,Yan H. D.,Li T. T.,Qiu L. Q.

( R )-citronellal is a key intermediate in the synthesis of L-menthol, one of the world’s three most important spices. It can be obtained by asymmetric reduction of ( E / Z )-citral using old yellow enzymes (OYEs), but catalysis by the wild-type enzyme suffers from poor enantioselectivity as well as low efficient conversion. A protein-directed evolution technique was used to enhance the activity and enantioselectivity of Ct OYE from Chroococcidiopsis thermalis . Upon the sequence alignment and molecular docking results, two amino acid residues at positions 103 and 351 were selected as saturation mutation sites. Finally, three single substitution variants of Ct OYE-W103E, Ct OYE-W103M, Ct OYE-W103P with improved enantioselectivity ( ee > 99%) and moderate conversion (>71%), and one double substitution variant Ct OYE-Y351Q/W103E with high enantioselectivity ( ee > 99%) and high conversion (83.2%) for reduction of ( E / Z )-citral were obtained.

In Situ Construction of Z-Scheme BiFeO3/Bi2S3 Heterojunction for Photoelectrochemical Detection of Hydrogen Sulfide in Wines

Tang Tingting,Chen Ziyi,Chen Shu,Zhang Peisheng,Zeng Rongjin,Hao Yuanqiang

This study developed and validated a photoelectrochemical (PEC) platform for hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) analysis in alcoholic beverages by electrodepositing/annealing dense BiFeO 3 films on FTO and converting them in situ into BiFeO 3 /Bi 2 S 3 heterojunctions. Phase formation and elemental redistribution were verified by XRD, SEM/EDS, and XPS; UV–vis/Tauc and Mott–Schottky supported broadened visible absorption and a direct Z-scheme alignment, while EIS revealed a markedly lowered interfacial charge-transfer resistance. Under optimized conditions, the sensor delivered a linear range of 0.1‒100 μM with an LOD of 36 nM, along with good selectivity against common anions and thiol-bearing interferents and excellent cycling photostability. In real matrices, standard additions achieved recoveries of 99.2%‒103.5% in water; beer and red wine contained 1–2 μmol·L ‒1 H 2 S with 94.5%‒106.5% recoveries. These results demonstrated that in situ chemical conversion coupled with Z-scheme interfacial engineering offers a simple, robust, and general route to rapid, sensitive, and matrix-tolerant PEC monitoring of H 2 S in complex fermented beverages.

Unlocking H2-free CO2 reduction: A Z-scheme Ni-MOF/WO3-x heterojunction for superior photothermal catalysis

Yingying Qian,Jianhai Wang,Yuesong Shen

Heterojunction engineering has garnered significant attention in photocatalysis as an effective strategy to address the rapid carrier recombination dynamics in semiconductor photocatalysts. The core challenge in constructing high-performance heterojunction systems lies in establishing optimized interfacial connections to achieve directional charge carrier migration. This study proposed a temperature-regulated band engineering strategy, through precise control of Ni-MOFs growth temperature and integration with WO 3-x possessing exceptional photothermal conversion capacity, to successfully construct an efficient Z-scheme heterojunction system. When the synthesis temperature of the Ni-MOF reached 140 °C, its conduction band negatively shifted to −1.2 eV (vs. NHE), resulting in a well-matched Z-scheme heterojunction with WO 3-x . The optimized 140-Ni-MOF/WO 3-x heterojunction demonstrated remarkable enhancement in charge separation efficiency while preserving strong redox capabilities through the Z-scheme charge transfer pathway. Under mild gas-solid reaction conditions (H 2 O as electron donor), the optimized catalyst exhibited excellent CO 2 reduction performance, achieving a CO production rate of 111.17 μmol·g −1 with 96.92 % selectivity. The temperature-depended modulation strategy for MOF electronic band structure proposed in this study paved the way for constructing efficient MOF-based photocatalysts.

Constructing Bi2MoO6/ZnO composite with Z-scheme charge dynamics for solar photodegradation of enrofloxacin and antibacterial trait

Qinzheng Wei,Sze-Mun Lam,Jin-Chung Sin,Huanming Liu,Jinpeng Su,Kun Dong,Haixiang Li

Multifunctional catalyst surfaces for organic photodegradation and antibacterial applications are generally in high requirements, but they are facing towering challenges in light harnessing capability and charge transfer. In this work, a plate-like Bi 2 MoO 6 loaded onto prism-like ZnO (BZ) composite was devised via a two-step precipitation-solvothermal technique to surmount above lapses. Comprehensive material characterization using XRD, FESEM, TEM, XPS, FTIR, UV–vis DRS, PL and photoelectrochemical measurements witnessed successful material compounding and crucial structural as well as distinct electrochemical traits. When fed with enrofloxacin (ENR) as a targeted aquaculture pollutant, the BZ composite exhibited high photodegradation activity (98.2%) under solar light, which was 1.4 and 2.6 times those of individual Bi 2 MoO 6 and ZnO after 180 min solar irradiation, respectively. Moreover, the BZ composite efficiently realized photocatalytic inactivation of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus under solar light irradiation. The bacterial colony completely inactivated after introducing the binary composite within 180 min. The remarkable enhancement was due to both incorporation of abundant site Bi 2 MoO 6 and the formation of BZ Z -scheme system which better improved light capturing behaviour and afforded the effective charge segregation for the incremented reactive oxygen species yield (e.g. superoxide anion radical and photogenerated hole). Additionally, LC-MS and T.E.S.T outcomes further validated the efficient ENR photodegradation and a substantial reduction in the toxicity of intermediate products. The relatively convenient repeatability trait and eminent photoactivity performance of BZ were favorable for actual wastewater treatment and bacterial disinfection applications.

Efficient photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline on lanthanum-doped BiOBr/g-C3N5 Z-scheme heterojunction under visible-light

Wenqiang Deng,Linfeng Xiao,Yingxin Zhang,Boyu Liang,Yan Hong,Runrun Li,Zhengyuan Zhou,Runhua Liao,Guangzhi Hu

In this study, Lanthanum ions (La 3 + )-doped BiOBr/g-C 3 N 5 (La 3+ @BiOBr/g-C 3 N 5 ) Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst was successfully synthesized via a facile solvothermal method. The composite structure was thoroughly characterized by XRD, FTIR, XPS, SEM, TEM, UV-Vis DRS, PL, and EIS analyses, confirming the successful incorporation of La 3+ into the BiOBr lattice and the effective integration of g-C 3 N 5 . The optimal composite with 5 wt% g-C 3 N 5 demonstrated superior photocatalytic performance in degrading tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH), achieving a removal efficiency of 95.9% within 180 min under visible light irradiation. The enhanced activity is attributed to the synergistic effects of increased specific surface area, improved visible light absorption, and more efficient photogenerated charge separation, as facilitated by La 3+ doping and Z-scheme charge transfer pathways. Scavenger experiments and Mott-Schottky analysis indicated that superoxide radicals (•O 2 - ) and photogenerated holes (h + ) are the main reactive species responsible for pollutant degradation. Furthermore, the composite exhibited excellent stability and reusability, maintaining over 87% degradation efficiency after five consecutive cycles with minimal structural change. This work provides a promising strategy for the design of high-efficiency rare-earth-modified photocatalysts for antibiotic pollutant removal in wastewater treatment applications.

Fabrication of CuInS2 quantum dot-modified TiO2 Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst for efficient degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol

Hao Zhang,Tao Wang,Xinyi Liao,Xiqing Liu,Qiuyue Men,Mingmin Bai,Yongqing Wang

The construction of heterojunction photocatalysts featuring broad spectral response and efficient charge separation was crucial for the decomposition of organic pollutants. In this work, CuInS 2 quantum dot (CIS QDs)-modified TiO 2 nanorods (CISQ/TiO 2 ) composite photocatalysts with varying compositions were fabricated via a facile solvothermal process. Their visible-light-driven photocatalytic activity was subsequently evaluated using the degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) as a model reaction. The results indicated that when the CIS QDs loading was 10 wt%, the photocatalytic activity was significantly enhanced. A series of characterizations revealed that the improved activity arose from the synergistic effects of the narrow-band-gap CIS QDs, which broadened the light absorption spectrum of TiO 2 and thereby increased light utilization. Furthermore, the proposed Z-scheme-like charge transfer accelerated the migration of photogenerated charge carriers while preserving the high redox potential of the system. This work demonstrated a facile strategy for constructing high-performance TiO 2 -based composite photocatalysts, with significant implications for environmental remediation.

Defect-modulated oxygen adsorption and Z-scheme charge transfer for highly selective H2O2 photosynthesis in pure water

Gao Zixiang,Liu Fuyu,Chen Zongwei,Song Qiang,Cullen Patrick J.,Zhang Xiaoyu,Zuo Zhihong,Zhong Jun,Lu Xize,Hu Zhuofeng,Liu Runzeng,Zhang Qingzhe,Yin Yongguang,Cai Yong

Solar-driven H 2 O 2 production provides an eco-friendly and scalable alternative to conventional anthraquinone processes. However, its efficiency has been limited by the inefficient charge separation and poor selectivity for the two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e - ORR). Here we report a Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst constructed by in-situ growth of sulfur-deficient ZnIn 2 S 4 nanosheets onto UiO-66-NH 2 (a zirconium-based metal-organic framework). This heterojunction promotes efficient charge separation while retaining strong redox capability, and sulfur vacancies regulate O 2 adsorption into a configuration that suppresses O-O bond cleavage and favors 2e - ORR. As a result, the composite achieves a high H 2 O 2 production rate of 3200 μmol g -1 h -1 with 94.3% selectivity in pure water under ambient air and visible light. A continuous-flow prototype exhibits stable performance for over 200 h, and the generated H 2 O 2 solution enables direct bacteria disinfection. Spectroscopic and theoretical analyses reveal the critical role of sulfur vacancies in optimizing O 2 activation. Our findings highlight a synergistic strategy of tuning charge dynamics and O 2 adsorption configurations for designing next-generation systems for sustainable H 2 O 2 production and water disinfection.

Integrating Z-scheme heterojunction of Co1-C3N4@α-Fe2O3 for efficient visible-light-driven photocatalytic CO2 reduction

Bing-Cai He,Chao Zhang,Pei-Pei Luo,Yu Li,Tong-Bu Lu

Photocatalytic CO2 reduction coupled with water oxidation provides a fascinating approach to mitigating the issues of global warming and energy shortage. Herein, a direct Z-scheme heterojunction of Co1-C3N4@α-Fe2O3 comprising a g-C3N4-supported single-atomic Co site catalyst (denoted as Co1-C3N4) and α-Fe2O3 nanorod arrays is fabricated for efficient CO2 reduction. A CO production rate of 14.9 μmol g−1 h−1 with a high CO selectivity (>99%) is achieved under visible-light irradiation without any sacrificial agents other than water. Time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) analysis reveals that both the Z-scheme mechanism and the single-atomic Co sites contribute to the prolonged lifetime of the photo-induced excitons. Moreover, the formation of the Z-scheme heterojunction would lead to an altered charge density of the single-atomic Co sites. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier-transform spectroscopy and anion adsorption measurements reveal that the key intermediate CO2− could be efficiently stabilized by the positively charged Co sites in Co1-C3N4@α-Fe2O3, thus enhancing the CO2 reduction performance. This work offers a new direction for the rational design of single-atomic site catalysts in artificial photosynthesis.

Facile fabrication of Z-scheme Ag2WO4/BiOBr heterostructure with oxygen vacancies for improved visible-light photocatalytic performance

Shuai Fu,Yanqiang Du,Junhong Bie,Zhiquan Huang,Hai Hu,Qiang Huang,Huijie Zhu,Wei Yuan,Leicheng Li,Bo Liu

Z-scheme Ag 2 WO 4 /BiOBr heterojunction with rich oxygen vacancies was successfully synthesized by the simplest hydrothermal method, which was systematically characterized in the structural, optical and electronic properties. The photocatalytic applications of Z-scheme Ag 2 WO 4 /BiOBr heterostructure with different weight percentages of Ag 2 WO 4 were studied. The optimized Ag 2 WO 4 (20%)/BiOBr heterostructure exhibited superior photodegradation efficiencies (98%) towards Lanasol Red 5 B (LR5B), which was 4.67- and 3.38-fold higher than pristine BiOBr and Ag 2 WO 4 , respectively. The principal reason for the elevated photocatalytic property of Ag 2 WO 4 /BiOBr was ascribed to the formation of oxygen vacancies and intimate Z-scheme heterostructure between Ag 2 WO 4 and BiOBr, improving the light trapping capability and facilitating separation of photo-induced charge. Moreover, the removal efficiencies of Ag 2 WO 4 /BiOBr heterostructure towards TC (tetracycline), CIP (ciprofloxacin) and RhB (rhodamine B) were 74%, 23%, and 13%, respectively. The simultaneous degradation experiment confirmed the competitiveness between LR5B and CIP for active species, leading to the inferior degradation efficiency for LR5B, along with the experimental factor towards LR5B was researched. The probable Z-scheme mechanism and the significant role of hydroxyl radical and superoxide radicals were demonstrated by the radical capture experiment and electron spin resonance (ESR). The Z-scheme mechanism has resulted in prominent improvement in charge separation, along with higher redox properties, which were responsible for the excellent photocatalytic activity.

Silver nanoparticle coupled Cu2O/Ag/Bi2MoO6 Z-scheme heterojunction with enhanced visible light photocatalytic activity for bacteriostasis

Gaojian Lv,Lifang Sun,Hui Gao,Chengcheng Ma,Wen Li,Shougang Chen

The construction of heterojunction has been considered as an effective strategy to achieve charge separation and improve photocatalytic activity. In this work, stable reduced Cu 2 O/Ag/Bi 2 MoO 6 (Cu 2 O/Ag/BMO) nanocomposites with high-efficiency antibacterial activities were synthesized via a simple wet chemical method. After illumination of 30 days, Cu 2 O/Ag/BMO still showed excellent antimicrobial capability against P. aeruginosa and S. aureus . The photoluminescence spectroscopy was used to analyze the electrons and holes recombination efficiency of samples, which suggested Cu 2 O/Ag/BMO could promote electron-hole separation and extend the lifetime of photogenerated carriers. The results of photocurrent responses test suggested that the photocurrent density of Cu 2 O/Ag/BMO was four times stronger than the Cu 2 O, which indicated the higher separation efficiency of electrons and holes pairs for the formed Cu 2 O/Ag/BMO. Besides, density functional theory proved that Ag nanoparticles could promote the electrons transfer from the Bi 2 MoO 6 layer to the Cu 2 O layer which facilitated the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Therefore, electrons and holes could better participate in the redox reactions and then generate more active substances (•OH and •O 2 – ), improving the antimicrobial ability. Therefore, the prepared Cu 2 O/Ag/BMO composites has a great application prospect in the antifouling field.
