Flexible cotton swab modified with ZIF-67/Ag nanostructures for ultrasensitive SERS-based detection of anti-PLA2R antibody in membranous nephropathy

Jiayan Xu,Hanlu Wang,Chenyi Yuan,Qiuyue Fu,Sizeng Bao,Guicai Fan,Lingling Bao,Chenjie Gu,Tao Jiang,Xueyan Bian

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has emerged as a powerful analytical technique for the sensitive point-of-care detection of anti-phospholipase A2 receptor antibodies (anti-PLA2R-Abs), a primary biomarker for membranous nephropathy (MN). However, conventional SERS substrates lack the integrated sample enrichment capability and flexible format required for efficient and convenient clinical analysis. To address this limitation, we hypothesized that an immersion-type flexible SERS medium based on conventional cotton swab could be developed for ultra-sensitive on-site detection of anti-PLA2R-Abs. Through a precisely controlled in-situ synthesis and a following ion sputtering, we engineered a ZIF-67/Ag nanocomposite on the nanofiber structure of a cotton swab, which combined molecular enrichment capability with dual signal enhancement mechanisms. The fibrous architecture of the cotton swab enabled highly efficient anchoring of biomarker-containing liquid samples, offering a significant advantage over silicon wafers. A substrate was yielded to exhibit not only outstanding SERS activity with an enhancement factor (EF) of 3.51 × 10 8 but also excellent uniformity and reproducibility. Using this structure, a quantitative assay of anti-PLA2R-Abs was facilitated across five orders of magnitude (1 × 10 −4 to 1 × 10 −9  mg/mL), achieving a limit of detection (LOD) as low as 0.185 ng/mL. Moreover, its diagnostic efficacy was further validated in clinical samples. This work presents a clinically viable point-of-care diagnostic platform that simplifies sample processing while significantly enhancing detection sensitivity for nephrology applications, thereby contributing to the advancement of point-of-care diagnostics.

Mantang Chen,Libin Wan,Shuhan Yu,Li Chen,Jingjing Yu,Xiaoyu Wang,Cong Nie,Fuwei Xie,Wenfen Zhang

Simple and convenient synthesis of a purification material of CZIFA. • Enhanced purification performance of CZIFA by acid treatment strategy. • Analysis and detection of pesticide residues in complex matrices. • Expanded application of ZIF-derived carbon materials in food safety detection. Porous carbon-based QuEChERS purification material (CZIFA) was synthesized through a straightforward calcination and acid treatment process using Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-67 (ZIF-67) as the precursor. The abundant adsorption sites and excellent clean-up capability of CZIFA resulting from acid treatment were confirmed through a series of characterization and performance evaluations. Combined with LC-MS/MS, a modified QuEChERS method using CZIFA as the adsorbent was developed for the simultaneous detection of 48 pesticide residues in tobacco. Under optimized conditions, the established method achieved low limits of detection (0.02–9.92 μg/kg), wide linear ranges (2–200 μg/L), and satisfactory precision. The average recoveries of the method were in the range of 80.1–119.7% with the relative standard deviations (RSDs) of <9.5%. This study provides a novel and efficient functionalized material for analyzing pesticide residues in complex matrices. Especially, it expands the application of ZIF-derived carbon materials in food safety detection. Download: Download high-res image (298KB) Download: Download full-size image

Unlocking Synergistic Electrocatalysis: A ZIF-67-Derived Ni-Doped Co–N–C Bimetallic Catalyst for Efficient Nitric Oxide Reduction to Ammonia

Tao Niu,Wenju Gu,Youwen Wang,Bin Gao,Wingkei Ho,Dingze Lu

To address the high energy consumption and low efficiency associated with traditional ammonia synthesis, we developed a nickel-doped cobalt-based bimetallic catalyst (CoNi-NC) derived from ZIF-67 for the efficient electrocatalytic reduction of nitric oxide (NO) to ammonia (NORR). The CoNi-NC-x catalyst, which features cobalt nanoparticles measuring 5–10 nm on a carbon support, was synthesized by introducing Ni2+ ions into ZIF-67 followed by vacuum pyrolysis. The incorporation of nickel optimized the electronic configuration of cobalt, maintained a high specific surface area, and improved the distribution of active sites. Electrochemical tests indicated that CoNi-NC-2 achieved an ammonia production rate of 19.7 μmol cm–2 h–1 and a Faraday efficiency of 15.8% at −1.0 V vs. RHE, outperforming Co-NC. Additionally, the catalyst exhibited excellent stability. The Zn-NO battery utilizing this catalyst facilitated the synergistic removal of NO, ammonia synthesis, and power generation, achieving a peak power density of 1.34 mW cm–2 and an open-circuit voltage of 1.91 V. Density functional theory calculations revealed that nickel doping reduced the d-band center of cobalt, weakened NO adsorption, and activated the N–O bond, thereby enhancing NORR activity.

Tuning Co–Zn bimetallic synergy in ZIF-67@ZIF-8 catalysts for selective photothermal CO2 reduction: mechanistic insights and performance optimization

Bin Guan,Junyan Chen,Lei Zhu,Zhongqi Zhuang,Xuehan Hu,Chenyu Zhu,Sikai Zhao,Kaiyou Shu,Hongtao Dang,Junjie Gao,Luyang Zhang,Tiankui Zhu,Wenbo Zeng,Minfan Qian,Zhangtong Li,Yang Lu,Shuai Chen,Zhen Huang

Herein, Co–Zn bimetallic center-modulated ZIF-67@ZIF-8 composites were prepared by ultrasonic synthesis, and the effects of the metal ratio on the photothermal coupling catalytic CO2 reduction performance and product selectivity were systematically investigated. The experiments showed that catalysts with higher Zn content (e.g., Co0.1Zn0.9) exhibited higher CH4 selectivity (29.32%), while the high Co ratio (e.g., Co0.9Zn0.1) significantly enhanced the CO generation rate (3.13 μmol g−1 h−1). Characterization by N2 adsorption, XRD, XPS, UV-vis DRS, and in situ DRIFTS revealed that the metal ratio affected the CO2 adsorption and electron transport efficiency by modulating the catalyst specific surface area (1213 → 555 m2 g−1), the band gap width (3.53 → 3.39 eV), and the distribution of the surface-active sites. The DFT calculations further revealed the synergistic effect of Co/Zn: high Zn content lowers the *CHO generation barrier (3.45 eV) and promotes the CH4 pathway, while the Co center enhances CO2 activation. This study provides a theoretical and experimental basis for the optimization of CO2 reduction product selectivity through precise regulation of metal centers.

Cobalt-ion center engineering in ZIF-67 for enhanced photothermal catalytic CO2 reduction: mechanistic insights into intermediate regulation and activity optimization

Bin Guan,Junyan Chen,Lei Zhu,Zhongqi Zhuang,Xuehan Hu,Chenyu Zhu,Sikai Zhao,Kaiyou Shu,Hongtao Dang,Junjie Gao,Luyang Zhang,Tiankui Zhu,Wenbo Zeng,Minfan Qian,Zhangtong Li,Yang Lu,Shuai Chen,Zhen Huang

Herein, a detailed study of ZIF-67 CO2 photothermal reduction catalysts was carried out, including the characterization of their physicochemical properties, photothermal catalytic performances and reaction mechanisms. Through the systematic characterization of ZIF-67 catalyst samples, the differences in their crystal structures, morphological features, specific surface areas and optical properties were investigated. In addition, the catalytic mechanism of the catalysts was investigated in detail by in situ DRIFTS and DFT calculations. The experimental results showed that among the ZIF-67 catalyst prepared with different ratios of Co2+ and 2-MI precursors, the ZIF-67 (8–1) catalyst exhibited an distinct crystal lattice structure, strongest photoelectron transfer ability, and largest specific surface area, resulting in an optimal catalytic activity (total yield = 4.71 μmol g−1 h−1). The band gap width of this material could be controlled by regulating the content of Co metal-ion centers to promote the photogenerated charge transfer in the adsorption–reduction process of CO2, corresponding to an enhancement in its catalytic activity. The mechanism of CO2 catalytic reduction showed that *COOH and *CHO are the key intermediates in the rate-controlling steps in the CO2 catalytic reduction reaction, and the energy barrier of the former controlled the reaction product yield, while that of the latter was the key to regulate product selectivity.

Carbon nanotube hollow polyhedrons derived from ZIF-8@ZIF-67 coupled to electro-deposited gold nanoparticles for voltammetric determination of acetaminophen

Jin Yafeng,Li Xiaobo,Ge Chuangye,Ma Jingjing,Li Yuanchao,Zhao Erqing,Yao Shuwen,Xu Guangri,Li Donghao

A comparative study was carried out on the electrochemical behavior of three carbonized zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) synthesized through solvothermal pyrolysis. An electrochemical sensor for acetaminophen (ACT) was subsequently developed. The sensor was made by coating the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) with cobalt-nitrogen co-doped carbon nanotube hollow polyhedron (Co-NCNHP), which was prepared from core shell ZIF-8@ZIF-67, before electrodeposition of gold nanoparticles. Due to the high specific surface area, good electrical conductivity and stability of both Co-NCNHP and the gold nanoparticles, the resultant sensor displayed excellent electrocatalytic activity towards ACT with the catalytic rate constant K cat of 4.9 × 10 5  M −1  s −1 , diffusion coefficient D of 1.8 × 10 −6  cm 2  s −1 , high sensitivity of 1.75 μA μM −1  cm −2 , and best at a working voltage of 0.35 V (vs. Ag/AgCl). Benefitting from the synergistic effect of both Co-NCNHP and gold nanoparticles, the modified GCE had a linear response in the 0.1 μM–250 μM ACT and detection limit of 0.05 μM (at S/ N  = 3). The sensor was successfully applied to quantify ACT in tablets and spiked urine samples with recoveries ranged between 96.0% and 105.2%. Schematic representation of cobalt-nitrogen co-doped carbon nanotube hollow polyhedrons (Co-NCNHP) exhibiting superior electrocatalytic activity to carbonized ZIF-8 and carbonized ZIF-67. Co-NCNHP were coupled to electrodeposition gold nanoparticles to modify glassy carbon electrode for improving acetaminophen (ACT) redox.

Sulfonated poly (ether ketone sulfone) composite membranes containing ZIF-67 coordinate graphene oxide showing high proton conductivity and improved physicochemical properties

Jingmei Xu,Xuan Chen,Mengchi Ju,Jiahui Ren,Pengyun Zhao,Lingxin Meng,Jinxuan Lei,Qingyuan Shi,Zhe Wang

In this study, a sulfonated poly (ether ketone sulfone) with multiple sulfonic acid groups was prepared and named as MSP, where the multiple sulfonic acid groups in the polymer were located on its side chains of uneven length. And a series of hybrid membranes were prepared by introducing organic–inorganic fillers (ZIF-67/GO) into this side chain type polymer matrix. Among them, ZIF-67 was chemically grafted onto the GO sheet through coordination between Co + and the carboxyl group of GO, bound to GO and grown uniformly. The ZIF-67/GO and hybrid membranes were characterized by FT-IR, XRD, SEM, AFM and 1 H NMR. The hybrid membranes exhibited increasingly high proton conductivity from MSP (0.0876 S cm −1 ) to MSP-1 % ZIF-67/GO (0.1426 S cm −1 ) at 100 °C and 100 % relative humidity. Moreover, the hybrid membranes have excellent chemical stability. The results indicated that ZIF-67/GO was important for constructing of proton transport channels, and the prepared hybrid membranes showed great potential for application in PEM.

Interfacial Regulation of ZIF-67 on Bacteria to Generate Bifunctional Sensing Material on Chip for Qualifying Cell-Released Reactive Oxygen Species

Zhuanzhuan Shi,Fang Shi,Yunpeng Li,Xiaoshuai Wu,Zhengyang Liu,Liang Liu,Qianqian Fu,Chang Ming Li,Chunxian Guo

Cell’s activities are highly dependent on signal molecules, of which reactive oxygen species of the superoxide anion (O2•–) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) are important ones that always work together to regulate biological processes such as apoptosis and oxidative stress. It is of significance to realize simultaneous qualification of O2•– and H2O2 but it still faces challenges particularly in live-cell assay with a complex environment. We report the design of a bifunctional sensing material by interfacially regulating ZIF-67 on bacteria Shewanella putrefaciens to generate cobalt nanoparticles/nitrogen-doped porous carbon nanorods (Co/N-doped CNRs) and its sensing chip for qualifying cell-released O2•– and H2O2. Co/N-doped CNRs exhibit unique properties including porous structure for significantly increased reaction surface area and coordinating Co nanoparticles for rich active sites. The bifunctional Co/N-doped CNRs is used to fabricate the electrochemical sensing chip, which achieves a fast response time (0.5 s for O2•–, 1.9 s for H2O2), a low detection limit (0.69 nM for O2•–, 2.25 μM for H2O2), and a remarkably high sensitivity (792.30 μA·μM–1·cm–2 for O2•–, 153.91 μA·mM–1·cm–2 for H2O2), among the best of reported bifunctional nanozymes.

Transforming in-situ grown chitosan/ZIF-67 aerogels into 3D N-doped Co/CoO/carbon composites for improved electromagnetic wave absorption

Keke Yang,Guilin Song,Yuanyuan Li,Qingda An,Shangru Zhai,Zuoyi Xiao

Nowadays there is much room for improvement in the designed synthesis of high-performance electromagnetic wave absorbers by combining metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and biomass components. Herein, 3D N-doped porous carbon cobalt/cobalt oxide (NPC/Co/CoO) composites were successfully prepared by transforming in-situ grown ZIF-67 clusters on a chitosan matrix. Analysis results showed that the N-doped carbonaceous composites obtained had unique porosity, high specific surface area, and defect-enriched structure, which provided numerous paths for electron transfer , leading to big benefits to interfacial polarization and dipole polarization. Most importantly, the ferromagnetic resonance and magnetic coupling were enhanced by ZIF-67-derived Co/CoO nanoparticles . By adjusting the content of metallic cobalt salt, pyrolysis temperature, and sample filling content, the optimal impedance matching properties of the composites could be optimized. When the matching thickness is 2 mm, the RL min of NPC/Co/CoO-10/700–30 wt% achieved − 48.97 dB at 13.52 GHz, and the effective absorption bandwidth exceeds 5.36 GHz. The composites with excellent performance prepared by a controllable process using chitosan and ZIF-67 might be a promising alternative for the large-scale preparation of high-frequency electromagnetic wave absorbers.

ZIF-67-Derived NiCo-Layered Double Hydroxide@Carbon Nanotube Architectures with Hollow Nanocage Structures as Enhanced Electrocatalysts for Ethanol Oxidation Reaction

Yixuan Li,Yanqi Xu,Cunjun Li,Wenfeng Zhu,Wei Chen,Yufei Zhao,Ruping Liu,Linjiang Wang

The rational design of efficient Earth-abundant electrocatalysts for the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) is the key to developing direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFCs). Among these, the smart structure is highly demanded for highly efficient and stable non-precious electrocatalysts based on transition metals (such as Ni, Co, and Fe). In this work, high-performance NiCo-layered double hydroxide@carbon nanotube (NiCo-LDH@CNT) architectures with hollow nanocage structures as electrocatalysts for EOR were prepared via sacrificial ZIF-67 templates on CNTs. Comprehensive structural characterizations revealed that the as-synthesized NiCo-LDH@CNTs architecture displayed 3D hollow nanocages of NiCo-LDH and abundant interfacial structure between NiCo-LDH and CNTs, which could not only completely expose active sites by increasing the surface area but also facilitate the electron transfer during the electrocatalytic process, thus, improving EOR activity. Benefiting from the 3D hollow nanocages and interfacial structure fabricated by the sacrificial ZIF-67-templated method, the[email protected]% architecture exhibited enhanced electrocatalytic activity for ethanol oxidation compared to single-component NiCo-LDH, where the peak current density was 11.5 mA·cm−2, and the jf/jbvalue representing the resistance to catalyst poisoning was 1.72 in an alkaline environment. These results provide a new perspective on the fabrication of non-precious metal electrocatalysts for EOR in DEFCs.

An MnO2-ZIF-67 immobilized acetylcholinesterase method for acetylcholinesterase activity assay and inhibitor screening from Inula macrophylla based on capillary electrophoresis

Jia Liu,Rui Ma,Wei Ha,Hai-Xia Zhang,Yan-Ping Shi

The inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) from decomposing acetylcholine (ACh) is regarded as a common therapeutic strategy for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Screening AChE inhibitors is of great significance for AD treatment . In this work, AChE was physically absorbed on the synthesized MnO 2 -ZIF-67 through electrostatic interaction for the first time, and the fabricated MnO 2 -ZIF-67 immobilized AChE coupled with capillary electrophoresis (CE) was applied to screening AChE inhibitor. The established MnO 2 -ZIF-67 immobilized AChE with excellent pH, thermal and organic solvents tolerance stability was evaluated by Ellman's method. Huperzine A was used as model inhibitor to investigate the inhibition kinetics of the immobilized AChE, which possess the feasibility and applicability for its inhibitor screening. The screening mechanism of AChE inhibitor was based on the Ellman's method and measured by the changes of 5-thio-2-nitrobenzoic acid (TNB), which was produced by the reaction of thiocholine (TCh) with 5,5-dithiobis-(2-nitrobenzoic acid) (DTNB). Benefiting from the advantages of convenience and high sensitivity, the proposed platform was employed to screen AChE inhibitors from 11 compounds isolated from Inula macrophylla , and macrophyllic acid A (compound 1 ), dibutyl phthalate (compound 2 ) exhibited strong AChE inhibitory activity. Thus, this work not only provides a promising platform for monitoring AChE activity, but also holds great potential for the further exploration of active components with AChE inhibitory activity from Inula macrophylla .

Hollow-Co3O4@CoP/NS-RGO Heterojunction Structure Derived from ZIF-67 Promotes Hydrogen Evolution Reaction and Oxygen Evolution Reaction Bifunctional Catalysis

Bin Liu,Songlin Xue,Shifeng Tan,Duxin Zhang,Zhao Deng,Hongfei Pan,Wenmao Tu,Ruiming Zhang,Haining Zhang,Yadong Wang

In this work, a two-step calcination method to fabricate Co3O4@CoP hollow nanoparticles embedded in N, S-co-doped reduced graphene oxide substrates is reported. The electrocatalyst is synthesized through a hydrothermal-calcination method of adding graphene oxide using ZIF-67 as a template followed by an annealing process in the presence of NaH2PO4·H2O. In the designed electrocatalyst, the formed hollow nanoparticles had an average diameter of 100 nm. The synthesized electrocatalyst displays a hydrogen evolution reaction overpotential of 54 mV at 10 mA cm–2 current density in 0.5 mol L–1 H2SO4 solution at room temperature, comparable to Pt/C catalysts. The oxygen evolution reaction overpotential in 1 mol L–1 KOH electrolyte is 288 mV, which is almost equivalent to that of IrO2. Stated thus, the as-prepared composite catalysts are promising candidates for bifunctional catalysts for water splitting technology, relieving the limitation of commercial catalysts caused by their single catalytic performance.
