Intracellular three-dimensional (3D) thermal mapping is a valuable technical tool for answering fundamental scientific questions about cellular thermal behavior and subcellular diagnostic therapy. The best method for achieving intracellular 3D thermal imaging is to collect intracellular temperature response while also obtaining a 3D position for the corresponding location. However, temperature measurement in cell space has not been accurately characterized due to the difficulty in accurately locating the 3D position in microregions. In this article, we developed a QD-based intracellular 3D thermal imaging system by combining QD fluorescence thermometry with double-helical point spread function (DH-PSF)-based axial localization. Liposome transfection was used to achieve the cellular uptake of CdTe/CdS/ZnS QDs in HOS cells. Five QDs’ temperatures with spatial distribution in living cells were realized in the axial range of 1.35 μm by collecting the thermosensitive fluorescence emission of discrete QDs and the axial imaging localization information, and their 3D thermal image distribution was mapped. Measurements and analysis show that the combination of QD fluorescence thermometry and axial localization of DH-PSF enables the acquisition of thermal image information in intracellular 3D microregions. Using this system, temperature variations at 3D locations in living cells exposed to ionomycin Ca2+ stress were also monitored. The method described in this article can be applied broadly to the study of intracellular space thermal response and thermal regulation.

In this manuscript, CuS-ZnS/SiO 2 @n-octadecane nanocapsules were prepared by a simple one-step Cu 2+ and Zn 2+ co-deposition method. The results of XRD, SEM, TEM, FTIR and XPS show that nanocapsules composed of CuS-ZnS/SiO 2 shell and n-octadecane core material were successfully prepared, and the particles deposited was proved to be composite structure of CuS-ZnS. The solution concentration, reaction temperature and pH value have significant effects on the morphology of the nanocapsules prepared. The appropriate conditions are 0.02 mol/L CuSO 4 , 0.02 mol/L Zn(CH 3 COO) 2 , 60 °C, and no additional pH adjustment. Under the optimum conditions, the melting enthalpy reached 45.11 J/g, and after 100 times of cold and hot cycles, the melting enthalpy of the sample only decreased by 3.2%, showing good thermal stability. The CuS-ZnS composite structure makes CuS-ZnS/SiO 2 nanocapsules exhibit a wider spectrum absorption performance. The absorption effect of CuS-ZnS/SiO 2 nanocapsules to ultraviolet light is significant, compared to the slight reducing of the visible light, while the absorption of near-infrared light is strong. The photothermal conversion efficiency of the samples is significantly improved from 9.7% to 86.6%. Hence, the prepared nanocapsules achieve full spectral absorption, which has a broad application prospect in solar thermal utilization.

The Cu-Ga-S/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) emitting green-to-red light are successfully synthesized by the conventional hot-injection method. In the preparation process, 1-dodecanethiol (DDT) is not only used as the solvent but also the sulfur precursor and ligand. Therefore, all reactants are additives, which can reduce solution contamination. The peak wavelength of Cu-Ga-S/ZnS QDs' emission can be tuned from 520 to 619 nm by changing Cu/Ga stoichiometry . And these quantum dots have narrow full-width at half maximum wavelength of about 75 nm. Furthermore, a white quantum-dot-based light-emitting diode is obtained by depositing the yellow Cu-Ga-S QDs on a blue InGaN chip.

The authors describe a multifunctional magnetic molecularly imprinted phosphorescent nanoparticle probe for the selective determination of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP). The probe consists of a magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ) core that is coated with a molecularly imprinted polymer doped with Mn-doped ZnS quantum dots (QDs). The MIP was obtained by copolymerization of acrylamide, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, and 2,4,6-TCP. The resulting nanoprobe shows strong phosphorescence (with excitation/emission peaks at 320/594 nm) due to the presence of the QDs, good magnetism, and high selectivity for 2,4,6-TCP. Under optimal detection condition, response is linear in the 0.1–30 μmol L −1 2,4,6-TCP concentration range. The imprinting factor is 8.84, and the detection limit is 35 nmol L −1 . The method was successfully applied to the determination of 2,4,6-TCP in spiked river water and waste water.

Mn-doped ZnS quantum dots capped with 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) were synthesized by a facile method in aqueous solution as a ratiometric fluorescent (I590 nm/I458 nm) probe for curcumin. Curcumin caused defect-related fluorescence quenching of the probe at 458 nm, whereas the orange transition emission of the probe at 590 nm changed only negligibly with variations in curcumin concentration. The MPA-assembled Mn-doped ZnS quantum dots were used for the simple, sensitive and non-toxic determination of curcumin. Under the optimized conditions, the response to curcumin was linear in the range 0.16–16.9 μM with a detection limit of 37 nM. The method was successfully applied to the determination of trace amounts of curcumin in urine samples with recoveries of 97.73–109.73%.

Smart drug carriers with intrinsic photoluminescence (PL) tracking of controllably released drugs are of great significance to indicate in real-time where, when and how the drug was released. Herein, we present a novel multifunctional poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)–Mn–ZnS (PMZS) nanocomposite for thermo- and pH-controlled release of doxorubicin (Dox) and real-time tracking of the released Dox in a PL-enhanced manner. The simple coupling of Mn–ZnS quantum dots and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) resulted in the unique thermo- and pH-responsive PL of PMZS. There was a much higher PL intensity at 37 °C than 25 °C and a much higher PL intensity at weakly acidic pH than at neutral pH, which is promising for PL imaging in tumor microenvironments. The PL of the PMZS composite was greatly quenched upon loading of Dox (the loading content and encapsulation efficiency of PMZS composites toward Dox were 15.2% and 84.1%, respectively), but was gradually restored with the controllable release of Dox, and the restored PL intensity was proportional to the cumulative amount of Dox released. The versatility of the PMZS composite as an effective Dox carrier and real-time PL-enhanced tracking of the controllably released Dox were further proved by cell viability assays and in vitro cell imaging experiments. The simple PMZS nanocomposite was easily-synthesized, biocompatible, and promising for PL tracking of when, where and how Dox was released.

Several conduction band co-catalysts (CBCOs), MoO 2 , MoS 2 and MoSe 2 , were prepared to improve the visible-light photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity of Er 3+ :Y 3 Al 5 O 12 /PdS–ZnS from water splitting, in which the PdS is a valence band co-catalyst (VBCO) used to facilitate the photo-generated hole transfer and the Er 3+ :Y 3 Al 5 O 12 is an up-conversion luminescence agent from visible light to ultraviolet light used to provide the ultraviolet light satisfying the energy demands of wide band-gap ZnS photocatalyst . XRD , SEM, TEM and EDX analyses were employed to confirm the morphology, microstructure and composition of the prepared photocatalysts. UV–vis absorption and PL spectra were also determined to explore luminescence effect of the Er 3+ :Y 3 Al 5 O 12 . The visible-light photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity of the prepared photocatalysts was evaluated by using Na 2 S and Na 2 SO 3 as sacrificial reagents in aqueous solution under visible light irradiation . The influential factors such as contents of CBCOs (MoO 2 , MoS 2 and MoSe 2 ) and visible-light irradiation time on visible-light photocatalytic hydrogen evolution of Er 3+ :Y 3 Al 5 O 12 /PdS–ZnS–MoX 2 (X = O, S and Se) were investigated in detail. Particularly, Er 3+ :Y 3 Al 5 O 12 /PdS–ZnS–MoSe 2 with 0.30 wt% MoSe 2 shows the highest photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity.

In this study, highly water-soluble Mn-doped ZnS quantum dots (QDs) capped by 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) were successfully synthesized by three different synthetic methods. By comparison, QDs prepared by hydrothermal synthesis method at 100 °C heating for 2 h had the best phosphorescence emission properties. Room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) could be remarkably and selectively quenched by Pb2+ in a pH 3.8 NaAc–HAc buffer solution. Based on the abovementioned finding, a simple, sensitive, and selective phosphorescence method for rapid detection of Pb2+ was successfully developed using MPA-capped Mn-doped ZnS QDs as a probe. Under the optimized conditions, the RTP intensity ratio of P0/P had a good linear relationship with Pb2+ concentration in the concentration ranges of 4 × 10−8–90 × 10−8 mol L−1 and 90 × 10−8–600 × 10−8 mol L−1 with the correlation coefficients of 0.9967 and 0.9970, which well followed the Stern–Volmer quenching equation, and the Stern–Volmer quenching constants were 8.41 × 105 L mol−1 and 3.452 × 106 L mol−1, respectively. The detection limit was 3.69 × 10−8 mol L−1, and the relative standard deviation for 11 repeated detections of 60 × 10−8 mol L−1 Pb2+ was 2.8%. According to the analysis of the Stern–Volmer quenching equation, UV-Vis absorption spectra, decay curves of phosphorescence emission, and phosphorescence lifetime, the quenching mechanism may imply that energy transfer and charge transfer in the interaction of MPA-capped Mn-doped ZnS QDs at the excited state with Pb2+ made QDs lose excitation energy. This resulted in phosphorescence of QDs causing dynamic quenching. The proposed method was successfully applied to detect Pb2+ in real water samples with satisfactory results, and the recoveries ranged from 93% to 109.3%. The developed method was simple, rapid, and specific and could effectively avoid fluorescence interference of the system, which opened up a promising prospect for the sensitive, convenient, and fast sensing and monitoring of small molecule pollutants in water based on phosphorescence sensors.

N -Acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) and L-cysteine (Cys) capped Mn doped ZnS quantum dots (NAC-Mn/ZnS QDs and Cys-Mn/ZnS QDs) are firstly prepared by hydrothermal methods . These QDs display strong phosphorescence emission peaks at 583 and 580 nm upon excitation at 315 and 306 nm, respectively. Since their room-temperature phosphorescence is efficiently quenched by L-ascorbic acid (AA), they have been employed as phosphorescence probes for detecting AA. The linear working ranges are 2.5–37.5 and 2.5–47.5 µM and the limits of detection are 0.72 and 1.38 µM for NAC-Mn/ZnS QDs and Cys-Mn/ZnS QDs, respectively. The possible quenching mechanisms have been discussed in detail. The QDs probes are highly selective to AA over other common ions, amino acids , glucose and bovine serum album. Finally, they have been applied successfully for detection of AA in human urine samples with satisfactory results. The recoveries are 98–104%. Our work provides a simple and convenient phosphorescence method to determine AA in real samples.

The phosphorescent 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) capped Mn-doped ZnS quantum dots (MPA-Mn:ZnS QDs)-KMnO 4 hybrid system was developed to be an “off–on” phosphorescent switch based on chemical redox mechanism for detection of glutathione (GSH) in food, wine, and biological samples. By employing KMnO 4 as the quencher to the phosphorescence of MPA-Mn:ZnS QDs, GSH recovered the emission for its determination by the use of its reducibility. The possible mechanism for the restored phosphorescence was elucidated that SO 4 2− oxidized by KMnO 4 on the surface of the Mn:ZnS QDs was reduced to S 2− with the addition of GSH. The phosphorescent hybrid system allowed highly sensitive detection of GSH in aqueous solution with a detection limit of 97 nM and a wide linear range of 0.3–280 μM. The precision for 11 replicate detection of 200 μM GSH was 3.5% (relative standard deviation, RSD). The developed method was applied for the detection of GSH in food, wine, and biological samples with the quantitative spike recoveries from 95% to 104%.

Graphical Vitamin see : The chelating ability of ascorbic acid (AA) enables the extraction of Mn and Zn from the surface of tripolyphosphate-capped Mn-doped ZnS quantum dots (QDs) generating more holes that are subsequently trapped by Mn 2+ . The reducing property of AA results in the reduction of Mn 3+ to Mn 2+ in an excited state, thus enhancing the excitation and orange emission of the QDs (see scheme). Such AA-induced phosphorescence enhancement enables selective detection of AA with a detection limit of 9 n M . Although quantum dot (QD)-based room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) probes are promising for practical applications in complex matrixes such as environmental, food and biological samples, current QD-based-RTP probes are not only quite limited but also exclusively based on the RTP quenching mechanism. Here we report an ascorbic acid (AA) induced phosphorescence enhancement of sodium tripolyphosphate-capped Mn-doped ZnS QDs, and its application for turn-on RTP detection. The chelating ability allows AA to extract the Mn and Zn from the surface of the QDs and to generate more holes which are subsequently trapped by Mn 2+ , while the reducing property permits AA to reduce Mn 3+ to Mn 2+ in the excited state, thereby enhancing the excitation and orange emission of the QDs. The enhanced RTP intensity of the QDs increases linearly with the concentration of AA in the range of 0.05–0.8 μ M . Thus, a QD-based RTP probe for AA is developed. The proposed QD-based turn-on RTP probe avoids tedious sample pretreatment, and offers good sensitivity and selectivity for AA in the presence of the main relevant metal ions and other molecules in biological fluids. The limit of detection (3 s ) of the developed method is 9 n M AA, and the relative standard deviation is 4.8 % for 11 replicate detections of 0.1 μ M AA. The developed method is successfully applied to the analysis of real samples of human urine and plasma for AA with quantitative recoveries from 96 to 105 %.
