Synthesis of novel p-n heterojunction m-Bi2O4/BiOCl nanocomposite with excellent photocatalytic activity through ion-etching method

Junxiu Wang,Zhenzong Zhang,Xi Wang,Yi Shen,Yongfu Guo,Po Keung Wong,Renbi Bai

A novel p-n heterostructure photocatalyst m-Bi 2 O 4 /BiOCl was successfully synthetized through a facile ion-etching method. Via adjusting the added volume of HCl solution, a series of different ratios of composite photocatalysts were obtained. The as-prepared samples of physical, chemical and optical characteristics were examined by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, selected-area electron diffraction, Fourier transform infrared absorption, Raman microscope, N 2 adsorption-desorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and UV-vis spectrum technologies. The photocatalysts showed high degradation rate and complete mineralization ability for methyl orange and tetracycline solution under visible light. The reaction rate constant of m-Bi 2 O 4 /BiOCl for methyl orange was 52.28 times higher than that of BiOCl. The characterization presented a good stability of materials. Furthermore, the photocurrent response test certified that the heterostructure effectively accelerated the separation and migration of photo-generated carries. The scavenger experiments evidenced that hole (h + ) and superoxide radical (•O 2 — ) were the primary active radicals. A possible photocatalytic mechanism was proposed. This work provided an alternative photocatalyst applied to water environmental remediation.

Two chain-based TbIII/DyIII complexes derived from m-nitrobenzoic acid with totally different structures and magnetic properties

Teng-Fei Zheng,Xue-Mei Tian,Shu-Li Yao,Chen Cao,Jin-Bao Cai,Sui-Jun Liu

Two Ln III complexes derived from one aromatic monocarboxylate ligand, namely [Tb 2 (mnba) 6 (H 2 O) 4 ] n ( 1 ) and [Dy 2 (mnba) 4 ( μ 3 -OH) 2 (H 2 O)] n ( 2 ) (Hmnba =  m -nitrobenzoic acid), have been prepared by similar synthetic procedures and structurally characterized. Complex 1 contains two identical one-dimensional (1D) chains with the syn,syn -carboxylate as linkers, while complex 2 takes the 1D chain structure with μ 3 - - OH and carboxylate as bridge. Magnetic studies indicate that ferromagnetic interactions between intra-chain metal centers exist in 1 and 2 and only complex 2 exhibits field-induced slow magnetic relaxation behavior.

Synthesis of size-controllable Pt nanoparticles decorated-poly(m-phenylenediamine) and its high catalytic activity for methanol oxidation

Wei Li,Hongwei Wu,Jianmei Chen,Huaiguo Xue,Yong Kong

A novel double-potential technique is applied for the electrodeposition of Pt nanoparticles (PtNPs) with controllable size on poly( m -phenylenediamine) (P m PD). The double-potential technique is comprised of the control of the electrodeposition time of PtNPs, followed by the electromodulation of PtNPs size. Oxidation of methanol on the resulting PtNPs/P m PD was investigated, indicating that PtNPs/P m PD exhibits excellent catalytic activity and satisfactory poisoning-tolerance toward methanol oxidation, which is due to the synergistic effect of PtNPs and P m PD. The results demonstrate that PtNPs/P m PD can be a promising electrode material used in the direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC).

General synthesis of hierarchical C/MOx@MnO2 (M = Mn, Cu, Co) composite nanofibers for high-performance supercapacitor electrodes

Guangdi Nie,Xiaofeng Lu,Maoqiang Chi,Mu Gao,Ce Wang

Improving the conductivity and specific surface area of electrospun carbon nanofibers (CNFs) is beneficial to a rapid realization of their applications in energy storage field. Here, a series of one-dimensional C/MO x (M   =   Mn, Cu, Co) nanostructures are first prepared by a simple two-step process consisting of electrospinning and thermal treatment. The presence of low-valence MO x enhances the porosity and conductivity of nanocomposites to some extent through expanding graphitic domains or mixing metallic Cu into the CNF substrates. Next, the C/MO x frameworks are coated with MnO 2 nanosheets/nanowhiskers (C/MO x @MnO 2 ), during which process the low-valence MO x can partly reduce KMnO 4 so as to mitigate the consumption of CNFs. When used as active materials for supercapacitor electrodes, the obtained C/MO x @MnO 2 exhibit excellent electrochemical performances in comparison with the common CNFs@MnO 2 (CM) core-shell electrode due to the combination of desired functions of the individual components and the introduction of extra synergistic effect. It is believed that these results will provide an alternative way to further increase the capacitive properties of CNFs- or metal oxide-based nanomaterials and potentially stimulate the investigation on other kinds of C/MO x composite nanostructures for various applications.

Efficient carbon-supported Ag–MFe2O4 (M = Co, Mn) core–shell catalysts for oxygen reduction reactions in alkaline media

Yingjie Chen,Shiben Liu,Liyan Yu,Qiuhong Liu,Yongtao Wang,Lifeng Dong

Nanoparticles with core–shell or hollow interiors have immense potential for catalysis. Herein, Ag@M x Fe 3− x O 4 (M = Co, Mn) core–shell nanoparticles were firstly synthesized through a seed-mediated method. These particles were then loaded onto carbon catalyst supports to form Ag@M x Fe 3− x O 4 /C. Then, hollow-M x Fe 3− x O 4 /C was prepared with the diffusion of Ag from Ag@M x Fe 3− x O 4 /C in saturated NaCl solution at room temperature . As a result, Ag@MnFe 2 O 4 /C demonstrates better oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity than Ag@CoFe 2 O 4 /C and other Ag@Mn x Fe 3− x O 4 /C with various Mn/Fe ratios. Moreover, Ag@MFe 2 O 4 /C shows superior ORR catalytic activities over hollow-MFe 2 O 4 /C, which can be due to electronic coupling between Ag core and MFe 2 O 4 shell. Furthermore, Ag@MnFe 2 O 4 /C catalysts demonstrate high durability for the ORR in alkaline media and insensitivity to methanol. These findings will provide helpful guidance for design and fabrication of carbon-supported core–shell catalysts for ORR in the future.

Insights into oral lentinan immunomodulation: Dectin-1-mediated lymphatic transport from Peyer's patch M cells to mononuclear phagocytes

Kaiping Wang,Yuxuan Liu,Zeming Zhang,Ziming Zheng,Wenqi Tang,Wangtianzi Teng,Xu Mu,Jinglin Wang,Yu Zhang

Lentinan (LNT), a natural polysaccharide, has been reported to exhibit immunomodulatory effects in the intestine after oral administration. Herein, we aimed to investigate the lymphatic transport of LNT in Peyer's patches (PPs) by traceable fluorescent labeling and to explore whether/how LNT contacts related immune cells. Near-infrared imaging confirmed the absorption of LNT in the small intestinal segment and its accumulation within PPs after oral administration. Subsequently, tissue imaging confirmed that M cells are the main cells responsible for transporting LNT to PPs, and an M cell model was established to explore the involvement of Dectin-1 in the absorption process. Systematic in vitro and in vivo studies revealed that the Dectin-1 further mediates the uptake of LNT by mononuclear phagocytes in PPs. Moreover, LNT can promote the proliferation and differentiation of mononuclear phagocytes, thereby activating immune responses. In summary, this study elucidates the pharmacokinetic mechanisms by which LNT exerts oral immunomodulatory effects, providing a theoretical basis for the development and application of other polysaccharides.

Influence of compression effect on the MEA structure and performance based on M−N–C electrocatalysts for PEMFC

Mingjun Xu,Zhao Jin,Meiling Xiao,Changpeng Liu,Wei Xing

The single-atom dispersed active sites and the thicker catalytic layer of metal-nitrogen-carbon (M-N-C) electrocatalysts based membrane electrode assembly (MEA) exhibit notable distinctions from Pt-based MEA, necessitating targeted optimization. This study systematically investigates the influence of compression on both structure and performance of the M-N-C electrocatalysts based MEA. Four compression ratios, ranging from 11.5% to 39.3%, were examined across diverse operational conditions. The variations in impedance across different electrochemical regions are observed, resulting from the superposition of distinct impedance components. It is found that the insufficient compression leads to higher porosity and the formation of cracks between catalytic layer and membrane, adversely impacting internal resistance and proton transport. Increasing compression first acts the catalytic layer, and then gradually acts on the interface, membrane and gas diffusion layer, thereby reducing internal resistance, charge transfer resistances, albeit at the expense of heightened mass transfer resistance. Among these factors, the influence of internal resistance affects significance to total performance. Furthermore, compression influenced mass transfer differently in various layers. For the catalyst layer, the effect was uniform and sustained, while for the gas diffusion layer, it initially remained constant and then experienced a sudden deterioration over a certain extent. Optimal MEA performance is achieved when the compression ratio attains 40 %, which 2.1 times higher than the low compression MEA. This finding emphasizes the necessity for higher compression on M-N-C electrocatalysts based MEA compared to Pt-based MEA.

M-MnCeOX derived from MOF for low temperature selective catalytic reduction of NOX by NH3: Experiments and mechanisms

Yuting Hu,Minghu Zhao,Bo Du,Ting Cheng,Zhaozhong Jiang,Kai Qin,Chengzhu Zhu

A series of M-MnCeO X catalysts using MOF (Metal-organic Framework) were prepared to apply for NH 3 -SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) of NO X . The effects of Mn/Ce molar ratio, calcination temperature and its activity including catalytic activity, H 2 O/SO 2 resistance and stability were systematically investigated. The results showed that under the Mn/Ce molar ratio of 1 and calcination temperature of 400 ℃, the catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic activity, H 2 O/SO 2 resistance, and stability. When the concentration of NO was 500 ppm, the gas spatiotemporal velocity (GHSV) was 36,000 h −1 , and the reaction temperature was 100 ℃, the NO conversion efficiency of M-MnCeO X exceeded 90.0 %. Added 200 ppm SO 2 and 3 vol% H 2 O simultaneously, the NO conversion efficiency was close to 80.0 %. By analyzing the physicochemical properties of the catalyst, M-MnCeO X had a large specific surface area, numerous acidic sites, and excellent redox properties. According to density functional theory (DFT), the NH 3 /NO adsorption energy of M-MnCeO X were −2.35 and −2.40 eV, exhibiting lower than a single MOF-derivative, promoting the adsorption of NH 3 or NO. The reaction mechanism on the M-MnCeO X catalyst followed the E-R and L-H mechanisms by In situ DRIFTS.

Syntheses, Structures, Optical and Magnetic Properties of Ba2MLnSe5 (M = Ga, In; Ln = Y, Nd, Sm, Gd, Dy, Er)

Wenlong Yin,Kai Feng,Wendong Wang,Youguo Shi,Wenyu Hao,Jiyong Yao,Yicheng Wu

The twelve quaternary rare-earth selenides Ba2MLnSe5 (M = Ga, In; Ln = Y, Nd, Sm, Gd, Dy, Er) have been synthesized for the first time. The compounds Ba2GaLnSe5 (Ln = Y, Nd, Sm, Gd, Dy, Er) are isostructural and crystallize in a new structure type in the centrosymmetric space group P1̅ of the triclinic system while the isostructural compounds Ba2InLnSe5 (Ln = Y, Nd, Sm, Gd, Dy, Er) belong to the Ba2BiInS5 structure type and crystallize in the noncentrosymmetric space group Cmc21 of the orthorhombic system. The structures contain infinite one-dimensional anionic chains 1∞[GaLnSe5]4– and 1∞[InLnSe5]4–, and both chains are built from LnSe6 octahedra and MSe4 (M = Ga, In) tetrahedra in the corresponding selenides. As deduced from the diffuse reflectance spectra, the band gaps of most Ba2MLnSe5 (M = Ga, In; Ln = Y, Nd, Sm, Gd, Dy, Er) compounds are around 2.2 eV. The magnetic susceptibility measurements on Ba2GaGdSe5 and Ba2InLnSe5 (Ln = Nd, Gd, Dy, Er) indicate that they are paramagnetic and obey the Curie–Weiss law, while the magnetic susceptibility of Ba2InSmSe5 deviates from the Curie–Weiss law as a result of the crystal field splitting. Furthermore, Ba2InYSe5 exhibits a strong second harmonic generation response close to that of AgGaSe2, when probed with the 2090 nm laser as fundamental wavelength.

Synergy induced by physical mixing m-ZrO2 and α-Ga2O3 for effective conversion of syngas to light olefins

Peng Zhang,Fangfang Li,Xuefang Yao,Pengze Zhang,Yukai Wu,Mengmeng Xi,Fanhui Meng,Lihua Kang,Mingyuan Zhu

The GaZrO x solid solution has been recently employed in OX-ZEO bifunctional catalysts for efficient conversion of syngas to light olefins, but it remains challenging to identify the specific contributions of Zr and Ga and to understand the detailed reaction mechanisms due to the structural complexity. To address this complexity and elucidate the active sites over the Zr-Ga oxide system, this study presents a catalyst designed by physical mixing ZrO 2 with different crystalline phases ( m -ZrO 2 & t -ZrO 2 ) and α -Ga 2 O 3 . The physical mixture of m -ZrO 2 and α -Ga 2 O 3 achieves a high CO conversion of 39.1 %, with light olefins selectivity of 87.3% among hydrocarbons after combined with SAPO-34, surpassing the performance of physical mixture of t -ZrO 2 and/or α -Ga 2 O 3 with SAPO-34. Combining the various characterizations and DFT calculations, we have confirmed that m -ZrO 2 site, enriched with oxygen vacancies and surface hydroxyl groups, is essential for CO adsorption and HCOO* intermediate formation, while the α -Ga 2 O 3 site plays a key role in the dissociation of H 2 . Furthermore, the electron transfer from m -ZrO 2 to α -Ga 2 O 3 in their mixture is more efficient than in a physically mixed t -ZrO 2 and α -Ga 2 O 3 . This accelerates the H 2 dissociation and boosts the spillover of hydrogen from α -Ga 2 O 3 to m -ZrO 2 , leading to the formation of more CH 3 O* intermediates and higher light olefins yield when combined with SAPO-34.

Construction of 0D/2D M/rGO@EuMOF multiscale heterostructures for integrated high-efficiency microwave absorption and corrosion protection

Ye Xingke,Yan Ning,Fuyao Huimei,Deng Qi,Sun Congcong,Qin Renchi,Ma Shihan,Li Yuxing,Yao Zhuheng,Qi Qing,Meng Fanbin

Developing multifunctional materials with integrated microwave absorption and corrosion resistance is crucial for expanding the practical application scope of functional materials in complex marine environments. In this work, a series of multiscale zero-dimensional/two-dimensional (0D/2D) heterostructure composites (denoted as MG@E) were successfully fabricated via a facile in-situ hydrothermal method. In this structural design, zero-dimensional europium-based metal–organic framework (EuMOF) microspheres are uniformly anchored on two-dimensional modified reduced graphene oxide (M/rGO) nanosheets, which effectively optimizes the impedance matching characteristic and improves the electromagnetic wave attenuation capacity of the composites. The excellent microwave absorption performance of MG@E composites originates from the synergistic effects of multiple loss mechanisms, including interfacial polarization at 0D/2D heterointerfaces, dipole polarization of MOF ligands, conductive loss, and magnetic dissipation. The optimized MG@E3 sample delivers a minimum reflection loss (RL) of −54.02 dB at a matching thickness of 2.1 mm, and a maximum effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 4.5 GHz at a thin thickness of 1.4 mm. Furthermore, the electrochemical test results demonstrate that MG@E composite coatings can significantly improve the corrosion resistance of Q235 steel. Specifically, the MG@E2 sample achieves a corrosion protection efficiency of 94.8% even after 21 days of immersion in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. The improved anti-corrosion performance is mainly attributed to the synergistic barrier effect derived from the 0D EuMOF microspheres embedded in the 2D labyrinth-like structure of M/rGO, which inhibits the penetration of corrosive media. It is worth noting that the comprehensive performance of the composites is still restricted by material dosage and preparation conditions to a certain extent. This work provides a feasible and referential strategy for the rational design and preparation of high-performance microwave absorption materials with improved marine environmental adaptability and long-term service potential.

Zn2+ Mediator with Ultrahigh Capacity over 8 m Enabled by H1.07Ti1.73O4 Ion Sieve for Stable Zinc Metal Batteries

Lin Huang,Xing Wang,Zihao Li,Shuyue Li,Lei Dong,Juan Wang,Keyu Xie

Interfacial engineering is universally acknowledged as a dependable methodology to address the aqueous zinc metal interface issues. Although it is quite effective, the introduction of a modification layer impedes interfacial ion transport kinetics to some extent. Addressing this trade-off between stability and ion flux is critical for advancing zinc-based energy storage systems. Herein, a layered titanate (H 1.07 Ti 1.73 O 4 , HTO) medium layer enabling fast Zn 2+ transport and ultrahigh Zn 2+ concentration on the zinc anode surface is proposed. It is demonstrated that HTO uniquely facilitates Zn 2+ enrichment through the exchange of interlayer H + ions, achieving an exceptionally high Zn 2+ adsorption concentration of 8.35 m , far exceeding that of electrolyte (2 m ZnSO 4 ). The HTO layer serves as a dynamic ion transport bridge, establishing a continuous conductive pathway, and its inherent negative charge to selectively block sulfate anion (SO 4 2− ) penetration, thus exhibiting dual functionality as an ion conductor and anion sieve. The protected anode (Zn@HTO) exhibits exceptional stability, achieving nearly 2300 h cycling stability at a current density of 0.5 mA cm −2 and over 3900 h at 5 mA cm −2 . Furthermore, Zn@HTO//ZnVO full cell demonstrates prolonged operational stability. This strategy provides a significant stride in breaking through the limitation of electrolyte concentration, thereby enabling fast, stable electrochemical reactions.
