Boron-Doped AIE Nanomaterials With NIR-II Emission for FL/MR Dual-Modality Tumor Imaging

Xinyue Kou,Juan Yue,Yingge Cong,Ruoqian Gao,Wenfei Dong,Li Li

Boron-doped aggregation-induced emission (AIE) nanomaterials (B@AIE NPs) were successfully synthesized via a facile one-pot solvothermal method for dual-modality fluorescence (FL) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. The as-prepared B@AIE NPs exhibited a uniform core–shell structure, excellent dispersibility, and strong NIR-II fluorescence emission at 984 nm upon aggregation, attributed to restricted intramolecular motion. Moreover, the boron doping conferred remarkable T 1 -weighted MR contrast capability, with a high longitudinal relaxivity (r 1 ) of 6.12 m m − 1 s − 1 . In vitro studies demonstrated excellent biocompatibility and efficient cellular uptake, with preferential localization in lysosomes. In vivo experiments in HeLa tumor-bearing mice revealed effective tumor accumulation via the enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect, enabling high-contrast NIR-II fluorescence and MR imaging. These results highlight the great potential of B@AIE NPs as a promising metal-free nanoprobe for precise tumor diagnosis through FL/MR dual-modal imaging.

NIR-Enhanced Catalytic High Entropy Alloy Nanozyme Hydrogel for Synergistic Biofilm Elimination and Wound Regeneration

Xiang Wang,Ruo-Bing Han,Xin Ding,Lan Xiao,Yuan-Wen Luo,Xiao-Huan Huang,Yan-Jun Hu

Drug-resistant bacterial biofilm infections severely impede wound healing. Here, we report a nanozyme-integrated hydrogel (HEA@OAH) that combines high-entropy alloy nanozymes with an injectable self-healing hydrogel cross-linked by dynamic Schiff base bonds for treating methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) biofilm-infected wounds. Under NIR irradiation, HEA@OAH exerts photothermal therapy to disrupt biofilms and photothermally enhances dual enzyme-mimicking activities: peroxidase-like activity generates bactericidal ·OH from H2O2, while glutathione peroxidase-like activity scavenges excess H2O2, to protect tissue. Theoretical calculations reveal the synergistic effects of multimetallic sites. In vitro, the reduction rate of the MRSA biofilm reached 84.5%. In vivo, it effectively eliminates biofilms, alleviates inflammation, and promotes near-scarless wound healing. This study provides a synergistic therapeutic strategy for next-generation intelligent wound dressings.

Upconversion and NIR persistent luminescence of CaTa4O11:Tb3+/Yb3+ phosphors prepared by molten salt synthesis

Mengxue Cao,Yongze Cao,Shengyi Liu,Xu Liu,Changhao Yu,Yichao Wang,Jinsu Zhang,Xiangping Li,Baojiu Chen

CaTa 4 O 11 (CTO):Tb 3+ /Yb 3+ phosphors were prepared using the molten salt synthesis. Under 980 nm laser excitation, this phosphor can emit light at 382 nm through a three-photon upconversion process from 5 D 3 → 7 F 6 in Tb 3+ . When the concentrations of Tb 3+ and Yb 3+ are 0.21 and 0.065, respectively, CTO:Tb 3+ /Yb 3+ exhibits the strongest upconversion green light emission from 5 D 4 → 7 F 5 in Tb 3+ , whose integral intensity is 5.77 times that of NaY(WO 4 ) 2 :Tb 3+ /Yb 3+ . Under 264 nm excitation, CTO:Tb 3+ /Yb 3+ has persistent 974 nm luminescence from 2 F 5/2 → 2 F 7/2 in Yb 3+ . By comparing the CTO host, CTO:Yb 3+ , CTO:Tb 3+ and CTO:Tb 3+ /Yb 3+ , the Ta 5+ -O 2- , Yb 3+ -O 2- and Tb 3+ -O 2- charge transfer bands (CTB) have been determined. During the downshifting process, Tb 3+ -O 2- CTB transfers energy to Yb 3+ -O 2- CTB. The trap depths of CTO:Yb 3+ and CTO:Tb 3+ /Yb 3+ are 0.680 and 0.679 eV, respectively, and their persistent times are 14.61 and 11.07 s, respectively. Under 980 nm laser excitation, the absolute and relative temperature sensitivities were obtained to be 2.74 and 0.178 K −1 , respectively. All results confirm that the CTO:Tb 3+ /Yb 3+ phosphors can be used as temperature sensing and infrared persistent luminescence.

NIR/Tumor-microenvironment dual-activatable nanorods for concomitant photothermal/photodynamic therapy and hypoxia-amplified chemotherapy

Sijia Yu,Linpeng Dai,Huihui Lv,Jinping Xue,Juanjuan Chen

To overcome challenges in cancer treatment, non-invasive photothermal therapy (PTT) andphotodynamic therapy (PDT) hold significant promise. In this study, we designed a type of amino-modifiedSiO2-coated bismuth sulfide nanorods serving (Bi2S3) and used amide reaction to couple with 3-(4-carboxyphenoxy) phthalocyanine zinc (ZnPc-COOH) to form a porous nanorods material, resulting in aBi2S3@SiO2-Pc/TPZ anti-cancer nanorod loaded with tirapazamine (TPZ), which synergistically combinesPTT, PDT and chemotherapy. Notably, this multifunctional nano-platform exhibits excellent photothermalproperties (η = 31.1%) under 808 nm laser irradiation, facilitating the uptake of Bi2S3@SiO2-Pc/TPZ andpromoting the generation of effective reactive oxygen species. Moreover, the synergistic interplay betweenPTT and PDT significantly enhanced the chemotherapeutic efficacy of hypoxia-activated TPZ. Thisapproach confirmed the potent synergistic anticancer effects of combined PDT, PTT, and chemotherapy.KEYWORDS: photothermal therapy, photodynamic therapy, bismuth sulfide (Bi2S3) nanorods, zincphthalocyanine, tirapazamine, combined therapy.

Injectable ROS-scavenging and NIR-responsive nanocomposite hydrogel for staphylococcus aureus-infected diabetic wound healing

Cai Ming,Liu Zhao,Sun Xun,Liao Ziming,Gou Yu,Yang Xuan,Qi Ying,Xing Guosheng,Liu Tingting,Zhao Wenjun,Duan Xiaoyuan,Zhang Tao,Yao Bin,Xu Weiguo

Chronic diabetic wounds are often complicated by persistent infections and oxidative stress, which impede effective healing. In this study, we developed an injectable, dual-responsive nanocomposite hydrogel designed to simultaneously scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS) and deliver photothermal and photodynamic therapy for wound treatment. The hydrogel was synthesized via dynamic boronate-ester crosslinking of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) with a bis-boronic acid linker (TSPBA), enabling efficient ROS quenching. Incorporation of palygorskite/molybdenum disulfide (PGS/MoS₂) nanocomposites imparted photothermal and photodynamic properties, activated by NIR light. In vitro tests demonstrated that the PVA-TSPBA@PGS/MoS₂ hydrogel effectively scavenged ROS, induced mild hyperthermia (~ 48 °C) under NIR, and exhibited significant antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. In vivo, the hydrogel accelerated wound closure in a diabetic mouse model, with a 46.7% residual area at day 7, compared to higher residual areas in control groups (66.5–92.4%). By day 14, nearly complete wound healing was achieved, accompanied by reduced bacterial load and inflammatory markers, as well as enhanced re-epithelialization, angiogenesis, and collagen remodeling. These findings suggest that this multifunctional hydrogel represents a promising strategy for the treatment of infected diabetic wounds, offering a controlled, localized approach to wound healing. Cu² ⁺-Activated NIR Photothermal Conversion Based on Imine Bond Photorotation for Dual-Mode Antibacterial Applications

Weiqi Yu,Hao Qiu,Menghui Lin,Xiaolong Zhang,Shunwei Chen,Zifei Wang,Ming-Zhi Wei,Conghui Si,Xiujun Han,Xujun Zheng

Small organic molecule-based therapeutic systems that integrate near-infrared (NIR) photothermal activity with Cu²⁺-mediated functionality as an orthogonal therapy pathway remain scarce. Herein, we demonstrate that coordination of Cu²⁺ with a small photothermal agent induces a pronounced bathochromic shift of light absorption into the NIR region and enables effective dual-mode antibacterial activity. Two rationally designed molecules, BTAA-Me and BTAA-Et, feature a photon-driven rotating imine bond that promotes efficient non-radiative excited-state decay for high photothermal conversion, together with a bis-benzothiazole motif that serves as a selective Cu²⁺ coordination site. The resulting complex, Cu²⁺@BTAA-Et, exhibits pronounced bactericidal activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli under 808 nm laser irradiation, markedly outperforming either photothermal treatment with BTAA-Et or Cu²⁺ treatment alone. Static density functional theory (DFT) calculations and excited-state dynamics simulations based on time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) systematically elucidate the underlying mechanisms. This work provides mechanistic insights into the rational design of dual-mode biomedical materials that synergistically combine photothermal effects with metal ion-mediated activity.

Lattice-Regulated CaNb2O6 Niobate for High-Performance NIR-II Luminescent Thermometry and Flexible Optical Sensing

Zongjie Li,Kejie Li,Jiaqi Zhao,Dongxu Guo,Ruiying Lu,Tianqi Sheng,Zuoling Fu

Rare-earth-doped luminescent materials show great promise for noncontact temperature sensing. However, their practical implementation is often hindered by poor dopant compatibility and limited integration into flexible devices. Herein, we report a Li+-mediated structural engineering strategy that significantly enhances the dopant tolerance of a CaNb2O6 (CNO) niobate host. The incorporation of Li+ ions facilitates lattice contraction and charge compensation, enabling high-loading and homogeneous incorporation of multiple rare-earth ions (Er3+, Ho3+, Yb3+, and Nd3+) while effectively suppressing impurity formation. By strategically engineering multichannel energy transfer pathways, particularly a phonon-assisted Yb3+ → Er3+/Ho3+ sensitization network, the Yb3+-sensitized CNO: Er3+, Ho3+ system exhibits superior near-infrared II thermometric performance under 980 nm excitation, achieving a high relative sensitivity of 0.92% K–1 and a temperature resolution of 0.66 K in the biologically relevant range (313–373 K). Furthermore, the CNO: Yb3+, Er3+, Ho3+ phosphor is successfully incorporated into a flexible polydimethylsiloxane film, demonstrating stable and reliable temperature sensing in aqueous environments. A prototype bendable optical fiber sensor is also fabricated, showcasing its great potential for wearable health monitoring and biomedical thermal imaging. This work establishes a systematic paradigm from host lattice structural regulation to flexible device integration, providing a novel and generalizable strategy for advancing intelligent thermal sensing technologies.

Bifunctional pyridine doping into deficient carbon nitride for efficient NIR hydrogen production and oxygen activation

Jinqiao Li,Xuefeng Chu,Wenfu Yan,Gang Liu

Low-energy photon conversion is crucial for the efficient utilization of solar energy. To this end, a synergistic chemical structure modification method is practiced to enhance the wide-spectrum photocatalytic activity of g-C 3 N 4 (BPDCN). By altering the calcination time, we achieve an advanced small size morphology state, which significantly improves the photocarrier transport properties of g-C 3 N 4 . Furthermore, the copolymerization reaction, regulated by varying calcination temperatures, synchronously completes the doping of pyridine and the introduction of N-deficient structure in BPDCN. The modified conjugated framework of BPDCN exhibits broad spectral response capability extending up to the near-infrared region. Additionally, the construction of conjugated carbon region enhances the O 2 adsorption property of BPDCN, expanding the advanced oxidation applications in oxytetracycline degradation. The rich-defect structure of BPDCN further boosts the efficient utilization of photogenerated carriers. Consequently, the optimized BPDCN demonstrates an outstanding photocatalytic H 2 evolution (PHE) activity of 4238.1 μmol g⁻¹ h⁻¹ , approximately 63 times higher than that of pristine UCN. BPDCN also shows the significant low-energy photon utilization ability with a measurable PHE activity of 15.7 μmol g⁻¹ h⁻¹ under NIR irradiation. This work highlights the importance of chemical structure design in organic photocatalyst development.

Bioinspired 3D-Printed NIR-Responsive MXene-Based Multifunctional Eutectogel Microneedles for Personalized Infected Wound Healing

Huan Liu,Aminov Nail,Decheng Meng,Liran Zhu,Xiaohan Guo,Cong Li,Xiaoqing Ye,Huanjun Li

Infected wound healing remains a significant clinical challenge, demanding innovative therapeutic strategies to simultaneously address bacterial elimination, tissue regeneration, and controlled drug delivery. Inspired by the hierarchical structure of crocodile teeth, a bioinspired, 3D-printed microneedle patch integrating Mxene nanosheets and a polymerizable deep eutectic solvent (PDES) composed of vinyl pyrrolidone (VP), itaconic acid (IA), and N-isopropyl acrylamide (NIPAM) is developed. The resulting MXene-based eutectogel microneedle (MF-MXene@MN) combines photothermal responsiveness, antioxidant activity, and temperature-triggered drug release for photothermal conversion and reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging. The gradient-height design inspired by crocodile teeth enhances tissue adhesion, while DLP 3D printing enables personalized wound dressing geometries with <50 µm resolution. In vitro and in vivo studies demonstrated a 94.88% wound closure rate within 10 days, 3.2-fold increased angiogenesis, 68% reduced bacterial viability ( S. aureus : 32.59%; E. coli : 48.17% under NIR), and pH-/temperature-responsive mangiferin release (88.3% cumulative release via 5 NIR cycles). These synergistic functions promote wound healing, offering superior antibacterial ability, tissue regeneration promotion, and drug release control compared to traditional wound dressings and microneedle systems. This multifunctional platform integrates bioinspired design, stimuli-responsive materials, and additive manufacturing, providing a transformative solution for precision wound management.

Investigations on the NIR Fluorescence Band Modulation of Bi-Doped Silica-Based Glasses and Fibers

Qianhong Zheng,Genying Zeng,Chenxing Liao,Huoming Huang,Weixiong You,Xinyu Ye,Liaolin Zhang

Bi-doped glasses and fibers have been widely applied in solid-state and fiber lasers. However, the mechanism underlying near-infrared (NIR) luminescence remains unclear, and Bi-related luminescence centers (BLCs) are prone to alteration during fiber fabrication, making it challenging to achieve high-performance Bi-doped glass fibers. In this work, Bi-, Bi-Al-, and Bi-Ge-doped silica glasses were investigated to elucidate the origin of NIR luminescence. Two broad NIR fluorescence bands were observed in silica glasses, originating from distinct BLCs. The longer-wavelength fluorescence band at 1423 nm, demonstrating sensitivity to Bi doping concentration and homogeneity, is attributed to Bi clusters (aggregates of Bi+ions), whereas the shorter-wavelength emission, independent of Bi concentration, originates from isolated Bi+ions. A vacuum-assisted melting-in-tube method with a single-step heating process was employed to fabricate Bi-doped silica-based glasses and fibers. The fluorescence bands of the fibers remained consistent with those of the precursor glasses, indicating no new BLCs were formed during fiber fabrication. The modulation of fluorescence bands was primarily governed by Bi cluster formation. Suppressing Bi clustering through co-doping with Al/Ge or optimizing fabrication conditions offers an effective route to tailor the fluorescence properties of Bi-doped glasses and fibers.

NIR-II Responsive Multifunctional Scaffold Enabling “Kill-Modulation-Build” Synergistic Therapy for Infectious Bone Defects

Qifei Yang,Shu Lou,Yuan Zhang,Zhurun Fang,Changyue Xing,Wentao Wang,Minxuan Han,Zhendong Wang,Ben Zhong Tang,Ming Zhang

Infectious bone defects present dual challenges: eliminating bacteria and regenerating tissue, which are further complicated by biofilm formation, antibiotic resistance, and chronic inflammation. Here, a near-infrared-II (NIR-II) responsive fibrous scaffold (AIE NPs@BP NSs@FSs) that employs a sequential “Kill–Modulation–Build” therapeutic strategy—referring to infection clearance, immune regulation, and bone repair is developed. Upon NIR-II irradiation, aggregation-induced emission nanoparticles (AIE NPs) produce localized hyperthermia, which eliminates bacteria and biofilms, offering a non-antibiotic solution that reduces the risk of resistance development. Moreover, black phosphorus nanosheets (BP NSs) scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reprogram macrophages toward a pro-regenerative M2 phenotype. This immunomodulatory shift enhances endothelial migration, neovascularization, and osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow stem cells. With excellent biocompatibility and biomimetic architecture, the scaffold supports coordinated antibacterial, immunoregulatory, and osteoinductive responses. This work provides a promising platform for treating complex infected bone defects by combining photothermal therapy with immune and regenerative modulation.

NIR grating harmonic excitation of Dy-doped CaWO4 phosphors for a new ratiometric thermometry strategy

Lulu Qiu,Baosheng Cao,Yujie Weng,Qianrui Liu,Yufeng Li,Shaowen Wang,Wenna Zhao,Yangyang He,Bin Dong

The harmonic generation effect, a distinct nonlinear optical phenomenon , exhibits unique properties and has critical applications across multiple fields. However, harmonic generation during optical measurements can introduce significant interference or experimental errors. Here, we investigated the photoluminescence (PL) characteristics of Dy 3+ doped CaWO 4 phosphors under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation. Both characteristic yellow and blue emissions of Dy 3+ and a series of NIR-induced harmonic generation were observed. The study demonstrated that Dy 3+ emissions were excited by harmonic generation originating from the dual-grating configuration of a spectrophotometer. Leveraging the divergent temperature-dependent intensity evolution between Dy 3+ emissions and 1.5th harmonic generation, we proposed a novel ratiometric thermometric strategy based on the luminescence intensity ratio (LIR). This new thermometry achieved optimal temperature sensitivity, with a maximum absolute sensitivity of 74.57 × 10 −4 K −1 and relative sensitivity of 2.21 % K −1 , surpassing conventional ratiometric thermometry relying on thermally coupled energy levels. These findings not only clarified the origin of multiplex harmonic generation and its impact on spectral measurement but also harness harmonic generation for innovative applications in optical thermometry.
