The solubilities of 4′,5,7-triacetoxyflavanone in eight different alcohols, 2-methoxyethanol, 2-propoxyethanol, 2-butoxyethanol, ethyl acetate, tetrahydrofuran, and acetone have been measured with an HPLC (high-performance liquid chromatography) analysis method at the experimental temperature from 278.2 to 318.2 K. The solubilities of 4′,5,7-triacetoxyflavanone in selected solvents increase with an increasing of temperature. The solubilities of 4′,5,7-triacetoxyflavanone were correlated with the modified Apelblat equation and universal quasichemical (UNIQUAC) equation, respectively. The correlated solubilities were in good accordance with the measured data at the experimental temperature. Furthermore, the crystal habits of 4′,5,7-triacetoxyflavanone in selected solvents were studied in this work.

In this study, mesoporous SBA-15 bifunctionalized with cetyl and amino groups (cetyl/amino-SBA-15) was successfully prepared by a post-synthesis grafting method. Detailed characterization by XRD, FT-IR, N2 adsorption–desorption and elemental analysis confirmed that cetyl/amino-SBA-15 still retained a long-range ordered hexagonal mesostructure. Cetyl and aminopropyl groups were simultaneously functionalized on the surface of SBA-15. The adsorption capacity of cetyl/amino-SBA-15 was much higher than the arithmetic sum of those of cetyl-SBA-15 and amino-SBA-15 due to the cooperative effect of hydrogen bonding/electrostatic interaction between 4-nonylphenol (4-NP) and aminopropyl groups and hydrophobic interactions between 4-NP and cetyl groups. The effects of the dosage and mole ratio of cetyl and amino groups on the adsorption properties of cetyl/amino-SBA-15 for 4-NP were also investigated. Cetyl/amino-SBA-15 exhibited excellent adsorption capacity over a wide range of pH values and cetyl/amino-SBA-15(3.2/0.8) displayed the highest adsorption capacity up to 120 mg g−1. Furthermore, cetyl/amino-SBA-15 exhibited high adsorption selectivity for 4-NP against phenol as well as high reusability, showing great potential for applications in wastewater treatment.

Due to their high surface energy, naked gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) tend to form agglomerates, which could lead to the decrease of active sites and catalytic activity of AuNPs. Herein, the gold nanoparticles/polyacrylonitrile (AuNPs/PAN) nanofibrous membranes have been prepared via an environmentally friendly and efficient route combining electrospinning, amination, and electroless plating technique. The abundant amine and imine groups can be introduced onto the surface of PAN nanofibrous membranes via amination treatment which could be used as “anchoring sites” to immobilize AuNPs. The resultant composite membranes were applied as the new catalytic materials for reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol under room temperature. The new catalytic membranes exhibited the significant advantages, such as low dosage, high catalytic activity, easy recycling, and excellent stability.

A high-dispersive FeS2 micro-cube crystal on graphene oxide (FeS2@GO) was fabricated by a one-pot hydrothermal method. The catalytic degradation of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) and its mechanism in a FeS2@GO-based Fenton system was investigated. Under acidic to slight alkaline conditions, FeS2@GO demonstrated an excellent capacity to remove 4-CP. More than 97% of 4-CP was eliminated within 60 min in pH 7.0 reaction solutions initially containing 0.2 g L−1 FeS2@GO, 128.6 mg L−1 4-CP and 100 mM H2O2 at 25 ± 1 °C, and the removal of 4-CP was further enhanced with increasing FeS2@GO loadings. In the meantime, the FeS2@GO also achieved lower iron leaching and a more complete TOC removal compared with pure synthetic FeS2 without graphene oxide. Furthermore, acetic acid and oxalic acid were identified as the primary products. The remarkable capacity of the FeS2@GO-based Fenton system in removing 4-CP displays its potential application in the treatment of organic compound-contaminated water.

The ability of single-atom catalysts (SSCs) to degrade refractory organic pollutants in peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based heterogeneous catalysis can be compromised due to less diversity in reactive species and unfavorable affinity with PMS. Herein, the as-prepared ternary atomic-scale site catalyst comprising single-atomic Fe/Ce sites and Fe cluster sites (Fe-Ce-BC-900) could completely remove concentrated 4-chlorophenol (4-CP, 40 mg L–1) in aqueous solution within 30 min, 1.20–1.35 times more efficient than Fe SSCs or Ce SSCs. The reactive oxygen species (ROSs) could be highly diversified on the ternary atomic-scale sites because of the Janus mechanisms: the production of nonradicals (1O2) through PMS oxidation and the generation of radicals (SO4•– and •OH) via PMS reduction on the ternary catalytic sites, which accounted for oxidative degradation of concentrated 4-CP. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicated that the ternary catalytic sites enhanced the uneven charge distribution and down-regulated the d-band center of Fe-Ce-BC-900 as compared to Fe-BC-900 and Ce-BC-900 catalysts, thereby optimizing the adsorption energy of PMS molecules and promoting electron transfer between metal sites and adjacent oxygen atoms. This study provides valuable insights into the configuration of multicatalytic sites for detoxification of organic-contaminants-polluted wastewater.

Poly[(3-hydroxybutyrate)- co -(4-hydroxybutyrate)] (P34HB), poly[(butylene succinate)- co -(butylene furandicarboxylate)] (PBSF) and poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) were melt-blended to prepare P34HB/PBSF/PVAc blends with improved ductility. The thermal properties, mechanical properties, rheological properties and morphology of the blends were systematically studied. The addition of PBSF promoted the melt crystallization of P34HB. The temperatures at 5% weight loss of the blends were higher than that of P34HB. The surface of the blends was investigated using scanning electron microscopy. The surface of P34HB was very smooth, but the surfaces of the blends were rough. PVAc can increase the compatibility between P34HB and PBSF. Compared with P34HB, the elongation at break of the blends was increased to 219.1%. © 2024 Society of Industrial Chemistry.

Natural polymer chitosan has many advantages, but the poor solubility limits its application. In this study, chitosan derivatives soluble in DCM, DMF, DMSO, H 2 O and other solvents were developed by introducing side chains into chitosan (CS). In addition, the fluorescent group on the side chain makes the chitosan derivative have the ability to detect 4-nitrophenol (4-NP). Firstly, a chain transfer agent containing C C (N3-NS) was synthesized with naphthalimide as the fluorescence unit. Then, using AIBN as initiator, an extensively soluble polymer with fluorescent moiety TP-NVP was synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT) method using monomer N -vinyl pyrrolidone (NVP). Finally, the C C of TP-NVP was used to react with –NH 2 on CS to prepare PVP-g-chitosan, so that more CS was “pulled” by TP-NVP into the solvent. The solubility of the synthesized CS-PVP probe can be adjusted by adjusting the amount of NVP, up to 17.6 mg/mL. At the same time, the synthesized CS-PVP had a good detection effect on 4-NP, and the detection limit (LOD) was 0.054 μM. The HOMO-LUMO energy level of the probe was calculated by cyclic voltammetry (CV). In addition, CS-PVP was successfully loaded on a low background fluorescent test paper to achieve real-time visual intelligent determination of 4-NP in real samples with the help of a color scanning APP of a smartphone.

Biosensors based on allosteric transcription factors have been widely used in synthetic biology. In this study, we utilized theAcinetobacterADP1 transcription factor PobR to develop a biosensor activating the PpobApromoter when bound to its natural ligand, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (4HB). To screen for PobR mutants responsive to 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate(HPP), we developed a dual selection system inE. coli. The positive selection of this system was used to enrich PobR mutants that identified the required ligands. The following negative selection eliminated or weakened PobR mutants that still responded to 4HB. Directed evolution of the PobR library resulted in a variant where PobRW177Rwas 5.1 times more reactive to 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate than PobRWT. Overall, we developed an efficient dual selection system for directed evolution of biosensors.

A new series of complexes of a ligand 4′, 7, 8-trihydroxy-isoflavone with transition metal (zinc, copper, manganese, nickel, cobalt) and selenium have been synthesized and characterized with the aid of elemental analysis , IR, electron ionization mass spectrum (EI-MS) and 1 H NMR spectrometric techniques . The compounds were evaluated for their in vitro antibacterial activities and antitumor properties. The metal complexes were found to be more active than the free ligand. Investigation on the interaction between the complexes and calf-thymus DNA (CT DNA) showed that the absorbance of CT DNA increased and the maximum peak (λ max = 260 nm) red-shifted, while the intensity of fluorescence spectra of Epstein-Bart DNA (EB-DNA) gradually weakened, which indicated that all of these metal complexes tightly combined with CT DNA.

To prevent the transmission of diseases caused by microorganisms, more and more focus was placed on the creation of antibacterial coatings. In this work, we reported a creative synthesis of antibacterial cationic 4-vinylpyridine polymer nanospheres (CvpPMs). The nanospheres of decreasing size were produced by the self-assembly of stiff polymer chains of styrene (St) and cationic 4-vinylpyridine (4vp) polymer. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and dynamic light scattering (DLS) were employed to describe the CvpPMs’ structural morphology and other characteristics. CvpPMs were N+-surfaced cationic nanospheres that had an average diameter of 250 nm. After evaluation against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, the results showed a significant antibacterial rate of 98% after 72 h and, even more impressive, 95% after 120 h. The synergistic interaction of amphiphilic groups (ethylsulfobetaine methacrylate, SBMA) and quaternary ammonium pyridinium groups was responsible for the exceptional performance of CvpPMs. In addition, it mimicked the N+–π interactions of adhesion, which significantly enhanced its adhesion strength, and the coatings also achieved antibacterial rates of averaging over 95%. In conclusion, the type of antibacterial copolymer nanospheres hopes to offer an avenue for developing antibacterial coatings.

The development of efficient and robust metal nanoparticle catalysts for the aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol is crucial for advancing green chemistry. This study presents a class of ceria nanoparticle catalysts, designated as Ce-NC/CFMX-T, where “T” denotes the pyrolysis temperature. These catalysts are synthesized by pyrolyzing a mixture of Ce-MOF-801/CFMX and dicyandiamide at high temperatures, aimed at the liquid-phase aerobic oxidation of 4-methoxybenzyl alcohol to 4-methoxybenzaldehyde, using molecular oxygen as the oxidizing agent and avoiding harmful additives or bases. Among the synthesized catalysts, Ce-NC/CFMX-973 exhibited exceptional catalytic efficiency, achieving over 99.9% conversion of 4-methoxybenzyl alcohol and complete selectivity for 4-methoxybenzaldehyde. This performance was achieved under moderate conditions, using xylene as the solvent at 373 K over 8 h and an oxygen pressure of 1 atm. Kinetic analysis revealed that the activation energy for oxidizing 4-methoxybenzyl alcohol using Ce-NC/CFMX-973 was 68.5 ± 3.0 kJ/mol, which is lower than the values observed for Ce-C/CFMX-973, Ce-NC-973, and Ce-C-973. The remarkable catalytic performance of the Ce-NC/CFMX-973 catalyst is attributed to the synergistic effects between CeO2 nanoparticles and oxygen vacancies, along with the support’s balanced acidity and basicity properties.
