Converting Co2+-impregnated g-C3N4 into N-doped CNTs-confined Co nanoparticles for efficient hydrogenation rearrangement reactions of furanic aldehydes

Wang Dongdong,Al-Mamun Mohammad,Gong Wanbing,Lv Yang,Chen Chun,Lin Yue,Wang Guozhong,Zhang Haimin,Zhao Huijun

The cyclopentanone and derivatives are a class of crucial fine chemicals for various industries and currently produced by conventional petrochemical synthetic routes. Here, we demonstrated a new synthetic approach to directly fabricate N-doped carbon nanotube (N-CNTs) networks with confined Co nanoparticles from Co 2+ -impregnated bulk g-C 3 N 4 as high performance hydrogenation rearrangement (HR) catalyst to efficiently convert a wide spectrum of biomass-derived furanic aldehydes to the corresponding cyclopentanones in water under a record-low H 2 pressure of 0.5 MPa and mild temperature. We unveiled a Co-catalysed bulk g-C 3 N 4 decomposition/carbonisation CNTs formation mechanism. A new HR pathway was also unveiled.

Catalytic activation of O2 by Al0-CNTs-Cu2O composite for Fenton-like degradation of sulfamerazine antibiotic at wide pH range

Yong Liu,Ni Tan,Jinrui Guo,Jianlong Wang

In this study, a novel Al°-CNTs-Cu 2 O composite, capable of activating O 2 to generate H 2 O 2 and further to reactive oxygen species (ROSs) at a wide pH range, was synthetized, characterized and applied for the degradation of sulfamerazine. In the activation of O 2 by Al°-CNTs-Cu 2 O composite, H 2 O 2 was generated from the reaction of O 2 with Al°-CNTs, which could be catalytically decomposed into O 2 − and OH by Cu 2 O, the formed Cu(II) could be rapidly reduced to Cu 2 O by Al°-CNTs in composite, which made Al°-CNTs-Cu 2 O composite reusable and decreased the leaching of copper ions into solution. The removal efficiency of SMR and TOC was 73.91 % and 56.80 %, respectively at initial pH = 5.8, T = 20 °C, O 2 flow rate = 100 mL/min, Al°-CNTs-Cu 2 O dosage = 2 g/L, SMR = 50 mg/L, and reaction time = 60 min. The removal efficiency of SMR kept almost unchanged and the concentration of copper ions in solution was below 0.5 mg/L. The Al°-CNTs-Cu 2 O/O 2 process could be used as a novel catalyst for the degradation of refractory organic contaminants in water and wastewater by Fenton-like process at a wide pH range through the in situ generation of H 2 O 2 .

Light-driven phase change microcapsules modified by TiN/CNTs nanocomposites for enhancement of solar energy storage and solar photocatalytic efficiency

Hongchun Ye,Yaoqi Huang,Linfeng Li,Yuanyuan Li,Xiaomin Cheng

The development of microencapsulated phase change materials (PCMs) integrating solar photothermal conversion and storage holds significant for solar energy utilization. Herein, this study developed an efficient light-driven phase change microcapsule system by encapsulating paraffin within a brookite TiO 2 shell through sol-gel interfacial polymerization , followed by wrapping titanium nitride (TiN)/carbon nanotubes (CNTs) nanocomposites on the shell surface. The microcapsule system exhibited a regular spherical core-shell structural morphology. The encapsulation of TiO 2 and the introduction of the highly thermal conductivity enhancement phase increased the thermal conductivity of the microcapsule system by approximately 151.5 % compared to pure paraffin while maintaining latent heat of over 135 J·g −1 . Furthermore, TiN/CNTs were combined with the microcapsule shell through hydrogen bonds and shared electron pairs, constructing localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR)-enhanced heterojunction . The microcapsule system demonstrated excellent broad-spectrum light absorption capacity , resulting in a remarkable 112.01 % enhancement in the optimum photothermal conversion efficiency. Concurrently, the degradation rate of MB was increased by 59.52 % due to the synergistic catalytic action of photothermal, semiconductor, and LSPR effects. The microcapsule system also exhibited excellent thermal and cycling stability, with only 1.6 % latent heat loss after 500 thermal cycles. This study provides a promising strategy for developing energy storage microcapsule composite PCMs for the efficient collection and utilization of solar energy.

Preparation of a new B-CNTs/PSSF composite catalyst for catalytic wet peroxide oxidation of phenol in structured fixed bed

JunHui Hu,Ying Yan,Huiping Zhang

A new structured catalyst consisting of boron-doped carbon nanotubes growing directly on paper-like stainless steel fibers support (B-CNTs/PSSF) was developed for continuous catalytic wet peroxide oxidation (CWPO) of phenol in a structured fixed bed. Firstly, B-CNTs/PSSF was synthesized by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) with phenyboronic acid as a single precursor and CNTs/PSSF was prepared with camphor for comparison. Secondly, the effects of different deposition temperatures, deposition times, and phenylboronic acid dosages on the morphology and properties of B-CNTs were investigated, respectively. The results verified that under the conditions of deposition temperature of 750 °C, deposition time of 20 min, and phenylboronic acid dosage of 2 g, the B-CNTs/PSSF composite catalyst with uniform growth density, wavy and kinked morphology, abundant oxygen-containing functional groups and defect sites, and boron-doped content of 2.96% was successfully prepared. Then, the performance of B-CNTs/PSSF for continuous CWPO of phenol was evaluated. Catalytic results revealed that the B-CNTs/PSSF showed excellent catalytic activity in phenol degradation within 7 h (phenol conversion reached about 100% and total organic carbon (TOC) conversion was up to 68%). In contrast, the average phenol and TOC conversion of CNTs/PSSF were about 75% and 35%, respectively. It indicated that boron doping endowed CNTs with higher catalytic activity.

Synergistic effects of multitype carbon doping and oxygen vacancies in TiO2/CNTs composite fabricated via nonthermal plasma for formaldehyde removal

Yujie Tan,Hui Xu,Ruchen Shu,Zhi Liu,Lijie Song,Ruina Zhang,Chuang Ouyang,Min Xia,Jianyuan Hou,Xinzhong Zhang,Yuan Yuan,Zhang Renxi

Formaldehyde as one of the typical indoor pollutants has long been concerned as it can pose a threat to human health. TiO 2 /CNTs composite with oxygen vacancies and multitype carbon doping (C–TiO 2 /CNTs) was fabricated using nonthermal plasma for the photocatalytic degradation of formaldehyde. The maximum degradation rate of formaldehyde was 93% and 83% via the new catalyst (with 5% CNTs content) under solar and visible light, respectively. The characterization of the catalyst confirmed the in-situ multitype carbon doping and oxygen vacancies: interstitial carbon doping and oxygen vacancies could dramatically reduce the bandgap and contribute to the improved absorption capability of formaldehyde and electrons. Interfacial carbon doping in the form of C– O –Ti bonds provided a migration channel, whereby photogenerated electrons could efficiently transfer from CNTs to TiO 2 and then quench the holes left in the VB of TiO 2 . Therefore, the multitype carbon doping and oxygen vacancies can expand the light response as well as promote the separation of photo-generated electron/hole pairs. EPR results and experiment section indicated that O 2 · − plays the most significant role in formaldehyde removal due to the reverse transfer of the electrons. This work advances the understanding of photo-degradation of TiO 2 /CNTs composite and provides a new route for the abatement of formaldehyde.

Xuan Li,Li Liu,Xue Dong,Guanhui Zhao,Yueyuan Li,Juncong Miao,Jinglong Fang,Min Cui,Qin Wei,Wei Cao

A sensitive dual mode competitive electrochemical immunosensor for the detection of B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) was successfully fabricated, which based on differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and amperometric i-t curve response modes. Polyaniline (PAN) and tin dioxide (SnO 2 ) were loaded on graphene sheets (GS), which could effectively promote the electron transfer process, thereby amplifying the current signal and increasing the sensitivity of the immunosensor. To promote biocompatibility, gold nanoparticles (Au) were incorporated on GS/SnO 2 /PAN (GS/SnO 2 /PAN-Au). GS/SnO 2 /PAN-Au complex was gotten to act as the platform which could provide a clearly DPV signals. N-doped carbon nanotubes (N-CNTs) embellished by ZnCo 2 O 4 quantum dots (ZnCo 2 O 4 /N-CNTs) with excellent catalytic properties for the reduction of H 2 O 2 was gotten to act as the label of the antibody-BNP (Ab), providing an obviously current signal through amperometric i-t curve method. A large quantity of BNP could be stable loaded in the modified electrode via GS/SnO 2 /PAN-Au with excellent electrical conductivity and good biocompatibility , which could compete with target-BNP to combine Ab that labelled by ZnCo 2 O 4 /N-CNTs. Under the optimum conditions, the immunosensor exhibited remarkable analytical performance of a linear range from 0.01 pg/mL to 1 ng/mL with a detection limit of 3.4 fg/mL for quantitative detection of BNP (S/N = 3). This method was able to become a universal strategy for other biological detection.

Yan Gao,Ziyan Lv,Ruimin Gao,Gai Zhang,Ying Zheng,Jianshe Zhao

Fuel desulfurization as a crucial subject has aroused people's attention with the environmental problems becoming more and more important. Oxidative desulfurization (ODS) is one of the most promising methods due to its high efficiency, low cost, easy operation and mild reaction condition. With the loading of polyoxometalate (POM), a hybrid material (CNTs@MOF-199) supported catalysts (CNTs@MOF-199-POM) are designed and prepared using one-pot procedure. The novel catalysts are investigated by FT-IR, XRD, XPS, SEM and BET. Factors affecting the desulfurization, such as catalyst dosage, loading amount of POM, reaction temperature, agitation rate and reaction time, are evaluated, and the optimum reaction conditions are determined. The test results indicate that the catalyst CNTs@MOF-199-Mo 16 V 2 possesses superior catalytic activity, with a desulfurization efficiency of up to 98.30%. In addition, CNTs@MOF-199-Mo 16 V 2 exhibits an excellent reusability, and the catalytic efficiency is only slightly reduced after recycling for 7 times. Besides, the kinetic studies indicate that the desulfurization process belongs to apparent first-order kinetic reaction. And the apparent activation energy is 12.89 kJ/mol.

CNTs/Ce co-doped PbO2 anode for electro-oxidation of triclosan: Fabrication, kinetics, and degradation mechanism based on DFT calculations

Huijiao Wang,Siyuan Xue,Weiyi Wang,Fan Gao,Shizuo Yi,Jiayin Li,Yuxin Yang,Erzhuo Zhao,Jianchao Wang,Jianbing Wang

In this study, an efficient Ti/SnO 2 -Sb 2 O 3 /CNT-Ce-PbO 2 electrode was fabricated for triclosan electro-oxidation by co-doping the transition metal Ce and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into the PbO 2 active layer . Characterization results show that the co-doped Ce and CNTs present a synergistic effect on covering the obvious cracks on the Ti/SnO 2 -Sb 2 O 3 surface, decreasing the PbO 2 crystal size, increasing the electrode oxygen evolution potential from 1.60 to 2.17 V vs SCE, and reducing the charge transfer resistance by 66 %. Consequently, Ti/SnO 2 -Sb 2 O 3 /CNT-Ce-PbO 2 was the most effective and energy-efficient electrode for hydroxyl radical (•OH) generation and triclosan electro-oxidation in this study. Compared with other two electrodes (Ti/SnO 2 -Sb 2 O 3 and Ti/SnO 2 -Sb 2 O 3 /Ce-PbO 2 ), triclosan removal by Ti/SnO 2 -Sb 2 O 3 /CNT-Ce-PbO 2 was accelerated by 1.8–2.6 times, with the energy demand for abating 90 % triclosan (E EO ) decreased by 49 % – 67 %. Furthermore, triclosan degradation pathways were proposed based on density functional theory (DFT) calculation and transformation product (TP) identification, with •OH addition at C14 and C11 sites being the most favorable pathway. In addition, the estimated acute and chronic toxicities of TPs were generally decreased than their mother compound. Therefore, the results of this study suggest the feasibility and effectiveness of the Ti/SnO 2 -Sb 2 O 3 /CNT-Ce-PbO 2 electrode for triclosan electro-oxidation.

Improvement of thermal conductivity and wear property of Gr/EP composites with CNTs/Cu foam as 3-dimensional reinforcing skeleton

Luqiang Li,Hongqu Jiang,Yichun Liu,Qi Zhao,Jingmei Tao,Yunying Fan,Yanzhang Liu,Caiju Li,Jianhong Yi

The graphite-reinforced epoxy resin composite (Gr/EP) is considered one of the promising solid lubricating materials. However, the low thermal conductivity and correlated poor wear resistance cause limitations to its tribological applications. With the expectation to improve the thermal conductivity and wear property, carbon nanotube (CNT)-reinforced copper foams (CNTs/Cu f ) are introduced as 3-dimensional skeletons to reinforce Gr/EP composites. Herein, comprehensive testing was conducted to assess the wear resistance, thermal conductivity, microstructure, and wear morphology of the composites. The results revealed that incorporating Cu or CNTs/Cu foams into the Gr/EP matrix significantly enhanced thermal conductivity and wear resistance, with only minor elevation of the friction coefficients, which showed a consistent decline trend with increasing CNTs contents. Notably, with the CNT content of 0.159 wt%, the composites reached the favorable combination of a 25.4 % improvement in thermal conductivity and a 34 % reduction in wear rate compared to pure copper foam-reinforced Gr/EP composites.

Multifunctional composite phase change materials with CNTs/SiC-modified epoxy coating for synergistically enhanced solar energy storage and photothermal conversion

Meng Fu,Youchong Hu,Shuai Luo,Yuanyuan Li,Yaoqi Huang,Xiaomin Cheng

Developing multifunctional composite phase change materials (PCMs) featuring enhanced photothermal energy conversion and storage performance is of vital importance, yet traditional organic PCMs suffer from inherent drawbacks, including leakage and poor thermal conductivity throughout the phase change process. To solve this problem, a new PCM design is provided, where stearic acid (SA) was employed as a latent heat storage unit, and carbon foam (CF) was served as a supporting framework. In this design, CNTs/SiC composite nanoparticles were uniformly dispersed into epoxy resin (ER) to fabricate a photothermal conversion coating. The modified epoxy resin (MER) coating acted as a protective effect for the internal PCMs, effectively mitigating leakage during phase transitions. With the incorporation of 9 wt% CNTs/SiC, the prepared composite PCMs retained the high latent heat (143.5J⋅g −1 ) and excellent photothermal conversion efficiency (96.76 %). Furthermore, the latent heat of the material showed a minimal reduction of only 0.4 % following 200 thermal cycles. These results demonstrate the potential of composite PCMs for efficient solar energy harvesting and storage in thermal regulation systems.

SSM-FEP/CNTs Composite membranes with CNT-bridged network for durable oil-water separation in high-temperature and corrosive environments

Hui Zhu,Kaikai Chen,Hailiang Liu,Jian Zhao,Qinglin Huang,Changfa Xiao

The improper disposal of waste oil and industrial oil-water emulsions presents critical ecological and energy challenges, driving the development of robust separation technologies. This study introduces a stainless steel mesh-supported polyperfluorinated ethylene-propylene/carbon nanotube (SSM-FEP/CNTs) composite membrane fabricated via a one-step thermoplastic sintering method. The innovative design leverages CNTs to create a three-dimensional bridging network within the FEP matrix, enhancing mechanical stability, optimizing pore architecture (average pore size: 0.15–0.30 μm), and establishing tubular nanostructured channels for efficient oil transport. The membrane exhibits exceptional stability in harsh environments, with < 5 % performance degradation in pH 2–14, and high temperatures (up to 100°C) during the continuous filtration tests, validated by SEM, FTIR, and TGA analyses. The one-step sintering process ensures scalability and cost-effectiveness, with a maximum flux of 52 L·m⁻²·h⁻¹ for kerosene, surpassing conventional polymer membranes. By integrating mechanical robustness, chemical inertness, and structural and transport properties, this composite membrane addresses limitations of low flux, poor durability, and complex fabrication in traditional systems, offering a sustainable solution for industrial wastewater treatment, waste oil recovery (e.g., refineries, marine applications), and closed-loop resource management. Its ability to maintain ultrahigh efficiency and durability under challenging conditions positions it as a transformative technology for environmental remediation and sustainable manufacturing.
