Porous liquids-enhanced CO2 adsorption for glycerol carbonate synthesis

Dong Zhang,Zijing Li,He Zhu

The catalytic conversion of CO 2 into value-added chemicals has attracted significant attention for its potential to promote both sustainability and economic viability. Glycerol carbonate (GC) is a valuable target; however, its conventional synthesis requires high pressure and temperature, largely due to the low solubility of CO 2 and the necessity for specialized catalysts. Herein, a novel porous liquid (PL) is developed by integrating a deep eutectic solvent (DES) with UiO-66-NH 2 . The obtained PL system served as both a catalyst and a gas adsorption enhancer for the cycloaddition of CO 2 with glycerol to produce GC. Experimental results demonstrated that the PL exhibited significantly enhanced CO 2 adsorption capacity compared to pure DES. Simulations revealed that CO 2 diffused more rapidly and uniformly in the PL system than in pure DES. As a result, under mild conditions (65 °C, 1 atm, 2 h), the GC yield in PL increased from 50.8 % up to 70.8 %, representing an approximately 40 % relative enhancement compared to DES alone. Finally, the PL system showed good reusability, maintaining stable catalytic performance over at least five consecutive cycles. These results highlight the potential of DES-based PLs as efficient platforms for CO 2 capture and catalytic conversion, contributing to sustainable chemical processes.

Pore Engineering for Directional CO2 Enrichment in Urea Electrosynthesis

Chun Li,Haoyang Xu,Nan Zou,Ruoting Liu,Yimin Zeng,Ying Zheng

Electrochemical synthesis of urea from CO2 and nitrate offers a sustainable pathway to address both carbon emissions and nitrogen pollution. However, achieving high C–N coupling selectivity remains challenging due to competing hydrogen evolution reactions and insufficient CO2 utilization. Herein, we implement a nanopore-structure engineering strategy to precisely tailor pore length and surface chemistry in metal-free porous carbon frameworks. Oxygen-functionalized surfaces augment CO2 binding affinity via dipole–quadrupole interactions, while elongated pores induce directional CO2 enrichment by establishing a H2O-deficient nanoenvironment that prolongs the residence time of CO2 through capillary gating. This dual modulation of gas–liquid–solid interactions enhances urea selectivity and suppresses hydrogen evolution, yielding a 28% increase in Faradaic efficiency and 12% improvement in urea yield. Our findings propose a novel nanopore-level design concept that shall support the rational development of porous carbon supports across gas–liquid–solid electrocatalytic systems.

Optimizing CaO-based CO2 adsorption: Impact of operating parameters

Chengzhuang Zhang,Jia Fang,Zhiqiang Han,Peng Chen,Xilong Xu,Kejian Wang,Yunxi Shi,Jianxiong Liao

CaO-based adsorbents present a promising approach for industrial CO 2 emissions reduction. This study systematically investigates the influence of adsorption temperature, adsorbent mass, CO 2 concentration, and flow rate on CO 2 capture efficiency using commercial CaO via thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Optimal adsorption performance, achieving a capacity of 0.62 g/g and a rate exceeding 0.14 g/g/min, was observed at 750°C, 7 mg mass, 20% CO 2 , and 20 mL/min flow. Characterization (SEM, BET, and FTIR) indicated that 750°C preserved a hierarchical pore structure (24.64 m 2 /g surface area, 0.1026 cm 3 /g pore volume, and 7.08 nm average pore size), mitigating sintering and pore blockage while confining carbonation to surface layers. Kinetic modeling confirmed chemisorption dominance (pseudo-second-order). These findings elucidate fundamental mass/heat transfer limitations, supporting the development of enhanced CaO-based carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies. UiO66-NH2@In2O3 heterostructures for improved photocatalytic CO2 reduction

Bolin Ma,Guanghui Chen,Lingling Zhou,Chengyang Ni,Xinyu Sun,Lei Zhang,Xinguo Xi,Lanqin Tang,Yong Zhou

The development of highly efficient photocatalysts for CO2 reduction remains a critical challenge in achieving sustainable energy conversion. In this study, we report the synthesis of a UiO66-NH2@In2O3, integrating UiO66-NH2 metal organic frameworks (MOFs) with indium oxide (In2O3) nanoparticles, forming a robust heterostructure. Characterization results demonstrated that calcination at 250 °C for 4 hours yielded a heterostructure with indium uniformly incorporated, as confirmed by XRD, SEM, TEM and ICP-OES analyses. XPS studies revealed significant electronic interactions between UiO66-NH2 and In2O3, including shifts in binding energies of indium and zirconium, indicative of chemical bonding. This heterostructure facilitated enhanced charge separation and transfer, as evidenced by photocurrent measurements, leading to superior photocatalytic CO2 reduction performance. Under light irradiation, UiO66-NH2@In2O3 achieved a CO production rate of 83.68 μmol g−1 during the first hour and a cumulative yield of 485.08 μmol g−1 after 7 hours, significantly outperforming pristine UiO66-NH2 and In2O3. The superior activity is attributed to the large surface area of UiO66-NH2, facilitating CO2 adsorption, and the heterojunction formation with In2O3, enhancing charge carrier dynamics. These findings highlight the synergistic effects of UiO66-NH2 and In2O3, providing insights into the design of advanced photocatalysts for environmental and energy applications.

Plasmonic Ag-decorated GaN for efficient photothermal CO2 conversion

Xuewei Hao,Jiaming Wu,Xintong Cai,Keyan Li,Chunshan Song,Xinwen Guo

The development of photocatalysts for efficient CO 2 conversion to chemicals especially C 2+ products remains a challenge. In this work, Ag nanoparticles (NPs) decorated GaN photocatalysts were synthesized by in-situ nitridation of Ga 2 O 3 combined with chemical deposition of Ag. The photocatalytic performance of Ag/GaN photocatalysts was optimized by tuning the loading amount and ripening time of Ag NPs, among which 0.3Ag/GaN exhibited best photocatalytic CO 2 reduction performance. The production rates of CO and CH 4 reached 421 and 80 μmol g −1 h −1 , respectively, and especially, it also produced C 2 H 6 with a production rate of 79 μmol g −1 h −1 . The introduction of Ag NPs not only significantly promotes visible light absorption as well as charge generation and separation, but also elevates surface temperature of the photocatalyst due to photothermal effect, resulting from localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of Ag NPs. Moreover, the addition of Ag NPs enhances the adsorption of both CO 2 and the *CO intermediate, facilitating the CO 2 activation and subsequent C−C coupling process. This study provides new ideas for the design and preparation of photocatalysts capable of converting CO 2 into value-added chemicals.

CO2-Ammonia Battery Using Organic Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer

Qing Li,Yifan Wu,Xinchen Song,Qihang He,Yunpeng Wang,Wenchuan Jiang,Cheng Lan,Zhiyu Zhao,Tao Liu,Heping Xie

CO 2 batteries offer a promising solution for mitigating climate change by reducing CO 2 emissions. Using ammonia, a highly effective gaseous alkali, we can harness chemical energy through its reaction with CO 2 for power generation. However, the lack of direct electron transfer in the ammonia-CO 2 carbonation reaction and ammonia's susceptibility to precious metal catalysis side reactions and corrosion complicate the construction of an efficient battery system. To overcome these challenges, we propose a concept that uses organic catalytic reactions to harness the chemical energy from the CO 2 -ammonia reaction for electricity generation. By employing isoalloxazine derivatives—riboflavin sodium phosphate (FMN-Na)—as proton carriers in redox reactions, we can create battery electromotive force through the proton concentration difference (ΔpH) between CO 2 and ammonia. This approach leverages reversible electrochemical proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) reactions to drive electron flow and facilitate power generation, without requiring renewable electricity charging. Our study demonstrates that a CO 2 -ammonia battery can achieve a peak power density of 22.5 W.m -2 , converting 1 ton of CO 2 into 60.04 kWh of electricity while producing over 99.60% purity ammonium bicarbonate. Our work combines CO 2 mitigation, electricity generation, and the production of valuable by-products, offering innovative strategies for addressing environmental and energy challenges simultaneously.

Engineering microporous humins derived from glucosamine for CO2 adsorption

Shujie Wang,Hetao Zhang,Zhongping Shao,Li Liu

In comparison to the thriving lignocellulosic biomass, the research on humins derived from marine biomass has not been thoroughly investigated. By choosing glucosamine (GlcN) as a model, the transformation process from raw material to solution intermediates until humins solid was demonstrated for the first time. The key intermediates were successfully captured and identified to be pyrazine dimers, such as 1-[5-(2,3,4-Trihydroxybutyl)-2-pyrazinyl]-1,2,3,4-butanetetrol and 1-[5-(3,4-dihydroxy-1-buten-1-yl)-2-pyrazinyl]-1,2,3,4-butanetetrol, which are formed through ring-opening of GlcN. By means of HPLC-MS/MS, FT-IR, XPS, elemental analyses and SEM characterizations, three elementary reactions were revealed including etherification reaction of pyrazine dimers and HMF, aldol condensation of LA, and thermal oxidation. At early stage, pyrazine dimers are linked by etherification. HMF could be linked through etherification as well, with LA reacted with the CHO group of HMF by aldol condensation. At the later stage, the thermal oxidation deepens, resulting in the enhancement of C=O. Moreover, GlcN-derived humins were engineered into porous carbon materials with excellent CO 2 adsorption capacity up to 5.60 mmol/g, whereas the CO 2 uptake was well correlated with the volume of micropores below 0.82 nm.

Jin Zhaoyong,Yang Meiqi,Dong Yilong,Ma Xingcheng,Wang Ying,Wu Jiandong,Fan Jinchang,Wang Dewen,Xi Rongshen,Zhao Xiao,Xu Tianyi,Zhao Jingxiang,Zhang Lei,Singh David J.,Zheng Weitao,Cui Xiaoqiang

A unique atomic dispersed hetero-pair was successfully synthesized, consisting of Mo-Fe di-atoms anchored on N-doped carbon carrier. This strategy breaks the linear scaling relationships of electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction by simultaneously regulating the *COOH adsorption energy and *CO desorption energy. The as-prepared MoFe–N–C exhibits excellent performance for CO 2 RR to CO with a high turnover frequency (TOF) of 3336.21 h −1 , CO Faradaic efficiency (FE CO ) of 95.96% at − 0.60 V (versus RHE) and outstanding stability.

Light-based catalyst-free conversion of CH4 and CO2

Zhai Jianxin,Wang Ruo-Ya,Chen Xiao,Zhou Baowen,Xia Zhanghui,Wu Haihong,Xue Teng,Jia Shuaiqiang,Chen Chunjun,Jing Lihong,He Mingyuan,Han Buxing

The photon-mediated conversion of CH 4 and CO 2 represents a green and sustainable route for producing transportation fuels and chemicals. Here we report an innovative, catalyst-free strategy for the conversion, by light, of CH 4 and CO 2 into CO/H 2 and C 2 H 6 . High-energy photons with a wavelength of 185 nm were found to initiate the reaction, and the additional use of photons with different energies at longer wavelengths further improved the reaction efficiency. In particular, the combination of 185-nm and 200–1,100-nm photons enabled CO, H 2 and C 2 H 6 production rates of 3.1 mmol m −3  h −1 , 1.93 mmol m −3  h −1 and 2.53 mmol m −3  h −1 , respectively. Moderate addition of H 2 O was found to aid the reaction considerably. Moreover, a total gas conversion of 1.51% (24 h) was achieved in experiments simulating an oxygen-free environment. This work opens up a promising route for producing fuels and chemicals using CH 4 and CO 2 without the use of any catalysts, under ambient conditions.

Surface Amorphization of Bismuth for Efficient Acidic CO2 Electrolysis

Chengbo Li,Xian Zhong,Yuan Ji,Yawei Hong,Jiawei Li,Youpeng Wang,Hongliang Zeng,Chunxiao Liu,Zhaoyang Chen,Xu Li,Qiu Jiang,Tingting Zheng,Hong-Jie Peng,Xinyan Liu,Chuan Xia

The electrochemical conversion of CO2 into valuable chemicals under acidic conditions provides a promising solution to challenges, such as carbon loss and catalyst instability caused by carbonate precipitation. However, acidic CO2 electroreduction remains severely constrained by intense competition from the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and sluggish CO2 activation kinetics. Here, we report a bismuth (Bi) nanoparticle catalyst with an amorphous surface layer (a-Bi), which demonstrates high catalytic activity and selectivity toward formic acid (HCOOH) formation in acidic electrolytes. The catalyst achieves impressive Faradaic efficiencies for HCOOH production, exceeding 90% over a wide current density range (−100 to −1000 mA cm–2) with corresponding potentials ranging from −1.24 to −1.75 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (vs RHE). Notably, the partial current density for an HCOOH reaches an impressive value of more than −900 mA cm–2 at −1.75 V vs RHE. Furthermore, the a-Bi catalyst exhibited stability for over 52 h at high production rates (−500 mA cm–2) alongside a single-pass carbon efficiency of approximately 85%. In situ spectroscopy and theoretical simulation revealed that surface amorphization significantly enhances the adsorption of CO2 and lowers the hydrogenation barrier, thereby accelerating the CO2RR kinetics while effectively suppressing the HER. This work presents a facile crystallization engineering strategy to address critical carbon loss challenges, thereby advancing the sustainability and scalability of acidic CO2 electroreduction processes.

Manganese-promoted Ni/Al2O3 catalysts for effective CO2 methanation

Wenhao Zhang,Liang shen,Longhao Xu,Fayang Zhou,Fengyin Sun,Jing Xu,Minghui Zhu

Hydrogenation of CO 2 to methane is a feasible solution to the growing global environmental and energy challenges. Nickel-based catalysts are efficient and cost effective for CO 2 methanation. Hernin, we synthesized Mn-promoted Ni/Al 2 O 3 catalysts with facilitated CO 2 methanation and elucidated the crucial role of Mn. After Mn doping, NiMn/Al 2 O 3 catalysts showed improved NiO dispersion. Subsequently, H 2 reduction and CO 2 methanation treatments resulted in reduction of NiO and MnO 2 into Ni and MnO, and incorporation of Ni 2+ into MnO lattice, forming NiMnO x and creating numerous Ni-NiMnO x interfaces. The abundant oxygen vacancies from NiMnO x could enhance CO 2 activation. Moreover, oxygen vacancies at the interface also promote electron transfer from Ni and MnO, leading to electron-poor Ni nanoparticles and thus significantly promoting the *CO methanation. Ultimately, the electron-poor Ni nanoparticles and abundant oxygen vacancies at the Ni-NiMnO x interface jointly facilitate CO 2 methanation.

Iridium-Catalyzed Hydrocarboxylation of Olefins with CO2 and H2

Yang Li,Ying Wang,Longbo Zhang,Yanru Zhang,Jia Guo,Yanyan Wang,Chenglong Yu,Jun He,Zhenpeng Wang,Juanjuan Han,Qian Li,Tianbin Wu,Qingli Qian,Buxing Han

CO2is a greenhouse gas and a nontoxic, easily available and renewable C1feedstock. H2is a clean and cheap reductant that can be obtained from renewable energy. Olefins are platform chemicals that can be produced from a variety of raw materials such as petroleum, coal and renewable biomass. The production of carboxylic acids by combining olefins, CO2and H2is a sustainable and very promising protocol. However, only a few advances in this topic have been achieved because novel catalysts need to be developed. In this work, we demonstrate that a simple iridium-based catalyst could efficiently promote the synthesis of C2+carboxylic acids via the reaction of olefins with CO2and H2. The reaction was effectively accelerated by a simple iridium-based catalytic system at 170 °C, which may be applied to various olefin substrates. The catalytic mechanism was studied through a series of control experiments. The findings contribute to advancing the sustainable production of valuable products by the reaction of renewable CO2and green H2with platform chemicals.
