In this work, we have applied Cr/Nb co-doping strategy to the wide band gap semiconductor Bi 3 TiNbO 9 and have performed a detailed investigation on the structure, optical and photocatalytic properties of these modified Aurivillius compounds Bi 3 Ti 1-2x Cr x Nb 1+x O 9 (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3). Our results suggest that Cr/Nb doping slightly expand the unit cell of Bi 3 TiNbO 9 with a doping limit around 20%. The involvement of Cr/Nb dopants in the crystal structure significantly reduces the band gap of Bi 3 TiNbO 9 by nearly 1 eV. Photocatalytic experiments and photoelectrochemical measurements confirms the critical role of Cr/Nb dopants in improving photocatalytic hydrogen production and anodic photocurrent. More than two-fold enhancement in hydrogen production has been noticed for merely 10% Cr/Nb co-doping. The highest photocatalytic activity belongs to Bi 3 Ti 0.8 Cr 0.1 Nb 1.1 O 9 (x = 0.1) for full range illumination and to Bi 3 Ti 0.6 Cr 0.2 Nb 1.2 O 9 (x = 0.2) for visible light illumination, with apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) approaching 0.52% and 0.27%, respectively. DFT calculation discloses the role of Cr in forming a new valence band inside the band gap of Bi 3 TiNbO 9 . In addition, strong anisotropic phenomenon in charge transportation of Bi 3 TiNbO 9 is also verified by DFT, as both conduction band minimum (CBM) and valence band maximum (VBM) are buried in the [BiTiNbO 7 ] 2− perovskite slabs and charges are only allowed to migrate within the slabs.

Germanium substitution in the original ZnAl 2 O 4 :Cr 3+ infrared long persistent phosphors Zn 1+x Al 2-2x Ge x O 4 : Cr (x = 0.1, … 1) were synthesized via a high temperature solid state reaction . X-ray diffraction (XRD), afterglow decay curves, photoluminescence , and isometric thermoluminescence spectra were collected to characterize these samples. With the increase of substitution of germanium, the diffraction peaks shift to the shorter angles and the phase of Zn 2 GeO 4 appears (x ≥ 0.5) as indicated by the X-ray diffraction results. Photoluminescence shows the infrared emissions of Cr 3+ response, and consistently confirms that Cr 3+ is very sensitive to the host crystal field in this material. A spinel structure is indicated for the Cr 3+ infrared emission. However, the substitution of germanium can not only modify the host structure, but also provide defects which improve the afterglow of the materials as indicated by the thermoluminescence (TL) results. With a suitable substitution of germanium, TL peaks move to lower temperatures and become broader, which are both good factors for the room temperature afterglow phosphors. All the results indicate that non-gallate material ZnAl 2 O 4 Cr 3+ , with a suitable concentration of germanium substitution, could be an excellent infrared long afterglow phosphor.

In this study, batch adsorption study was utilized in evaluating the potential suitability of quaternized chitosan immobilized bentonite (BT) as an adsorbent in the adsorption of anionic pollutants, Cr(VI), and methyl orange (MO) from aqueous solutions. The adsorptive behaviors of Cr(VI) and MO were examined as a function of the ratio of quaternized chitosan to BT, adsorbent dosage, solution pH, initial Cr(VI) (or MO) concentration, and contact time. The adsorption equilibrium for both Cr(VI) and MO was reached quickly. Adsorption isotherms for Cr(VI) and MO were well described by the Langmuir isotherm, while the pseudo-second-order kinetic model provided good kinetic data fitting. Furthermore, the results show that this adsorbent exhibited higher adsorption capacity for MO than Cr(VI). It appears that this anionic Cr(VI) favored the electrostatic interactions with this adsorbent while the anionic MO dye may interact with this adsorbent by electrostatic interactions and the hydrogen bonding.

To avoid the environmental detriment caused by Cr(VI) waste, this study constructs a dual cross-linking network structure using sodium alginate (SA) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). Chitosan (CS) is further introduced through electrostatic attraction and hydrogen bonding and SA/PVA/CS (SPC) composite with porous structure is successfully prepared for the removal of Cr(VI) from wastewater. Batch adsorption experiments show that SPC has excellent adsorption capacity and practical usability with a broad pH applicability range. Under optimal adsorption conditions (pH = 2, t = 150 min, T = 35 °C, m/ V = 2 g/L, C 0 = 10 mg/L), the Cr(VI) removal rate of SPC achieves 89.2 %. Adsorption kinetics and isotherm models indicate that the adsorption process is primarily multi-layer and chemical adsorption. Additionally, FT-IR and XPS reveal that the adsorption mechanism of SPC for Cr(VI) involves a synergy of electrostatic attraction, reduction, ion exchange and complexation. Density functional theory (DFT) simulations also confirm the dominant role of CS in the Cr(VI) adsorption. In summary, SPC shows great potential for Cr(VI) wastewater treatment.

The electrocatalytic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is an effective method to produce high-value-added chemicals with low energy consumption. In this work, we prepared a highly efficient electrocatalyst by incorporating Cr-doped NiFe layered double hydroxide nanosheets supported on nickel foam (NiFeCr-LDH/NF). For the HMF oxidation reaction (HMFOR) in 1 M KOH electrolyte, the NiFeCr-LDH/NF catalyst achieves an exceptional current density of 100 mA cm -2 at a low potential of 1.47 V vs . reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). Critically, it exhibits a high 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) yield of 93.8% and a Faradaic efficiency of 91.5%. Furthermore, in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) studies and transient electrochemical measurements were carried out to investigate the mechanism in the HMFOR. Precisely controlled Cr doping can effectively modulate the synergistic adsorption equilibrium between HMF and hydroxyl intermediates, thereby enhancing electrocatalytic reaction efficiency via optimized interfacial charge transfer dynamics. This work illustrates heteroatom engineering as a powerful strategy for designing efficient electrocatalysts, enabling efficient biomass valorization.

Metal exsolution in perovskite oxide has emerged as an effective way to boost CO2 electrolysis activity in solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs). It is crucial to precisely tailor the exsolution characteristics to optimize the catalytic functionality and boost the catalytic activity. Herein, we reveal that the Cr cations doping effectively modify the crystal defects and regulate the metal exsolution of Sr2Fe1.1Ni0.2Cr0.2Mo0.5O6-δ (SFNCM). FeNi alloy nanoparticles with an average particle size of ~10 nm and a particle density of exceeding 1500 μm-2 were exsolved on the surface of SFNCM perovskite, which increases the active sites and enhances CO2 electrolytic activity. The SFNCM based SOEC decorated with abundant FeNi alloy nanoparticles achieves a high current density of 2.57 A cm-2 at 1.6 V, superior to other Sr2Fe1.3Ni0.2Mo0.5O6-δ counterparts. The experimental and theoretical calculation results demonstrate the controllability of the exsolution via engineering of the perovskite structural feature. This work offers a new perspective on lattice doping strategy for the regulation of metal exsolution.

Developing low-cost, corrosion-resistant catalytic electrodes for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is essential for efficient and durable hydrogen production via anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE). Herein, we report a polydopamine (PDA)-coated Fe,Cr codoped NiS2 self-supporting electrode (PDA-Fe,Cr-NiS2@NF). The nitrogen-rich functional groups of PDA establish robust M-N coordination bonds with active metal centers, thereby suppressing metal dissolution during anodic reconstruction. In parallel, the conductive PDA layer regulates interfacial electron redistribution and optimizes the hydrogen-bond network of interfacial water, lowering the OER activation energy. Its conformal protective layer further enhances catalyst stability. The optimized electrode delivers an OER overpotential of only 247 mV at 1 A cm–2. When integrated as the anode with a PtNiC cathode in an AEMWE cell, the system reaches a current density of 1 A cm–2 at only 1.737 V at 70 °C and operates stably for 1000 h, with a voltage decay rate of only 0.1 mV h–1, an electrolysis efficiency of 71.96%, and an energy consumption of 4.157 kWh Nm3– H2. This work establishes a viable coordination-protection strategy for constructing durable, high-performance OER electrodes for industrial-scale water electrolysis.

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)), a highly toxic and carcinogenic environmental pollutant, poses severe threats to ecological balance and human health. Traditional colorimetric detection methods relying on peroxidase-like nanozymes often suffer from interference caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS) and coexisting redox-active substances, compromising their accuracy in complex water matrices. Herein, we report a novel H 2 O 2 -free colorimetric strategy for the ultrasensitive detection of Cr(VI) using atomically dispersed CuCo-NC catalysts. Unlike conventional mechanisms, the synergistic interplay between Cu and Co atoms modulates the electronic structure (d-band center), enabling Cr(VI) to act as a direct electron acceptor. This unique pathway facilitates the oxidation of TMB without generating ROS intermediates, thereby conferring exceptional resistance to common interferents such as Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ . The sensor exhibits a wide linear range (50–1000 nM) and an ultralow detection limit of 1.12 nM, surpassing many existing methods. Furthermore, the practical applicability of this probe is validated through the successful monitoring of Cr(VI) in real water samples (e.g., Guilin Lijiang River), demonstrating its robustness for on-site environmental surveillance. This work not only provides a reliable tool for early-warning monitoring of chromium pollution but also offers mechanistic insights into H 2 O 2 -free catalytic pathways. Graphical abstract Schematic illustration of the H 2 O 2 -free colorimetric sensing strategy using atomically dispersed CuCo-NC nanozymes. The synergistic Cu/Co dual sites enable Cr(VI) to act as a direct electron acceptor, bypassing the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and thus eliminating interference from coexisting redox-active substances. This mechanism allows for the ultrasensitive and selective visual detection of Cr(VI) in real water environments

The crystal structure of minerals plays a pivotal role in their applications. The V-Cr spinel is the main crystalline phase of high-chromium vanadium slag, and its crystal structure is crucial for the extraction of V and Cr resources. In this study, the phase equilibrium experiments were first conducted on vanadium slag with Cr 2 O 3 contents ranging from 0 to 15 wt.% at 1400°C. The results demonstrated that almost all V and Cr elements crystallized as V-Cr spinel, and the increase in Cr 2 O 3 content promoted the crystallization of V-Cr spinel. Subsequently, three types of V-Cr spinel crystals were obtained via in-situ super-gravity separation at 1400°C, and the corresponding crystal structures were determined based on structural characterization as (Fe 2+ )(Fe 3+ 0.085 ,V 3+ 0.77 ,Cr 3+ 0.145 ) 2 O 4 , (Fe 2+ )(Fe 3+ 0.01 ,V 3+ 0.625 ,Cr 3+ 0.365 ) 2 O 4 and (Fe 2+ )(Fe 3+ 0.005 ,V 3+ 0.475 , Cr 3+ 0.52 ) 2 O 4 , respectively. On this basis, it was found that Cr 3+ ion migrated into V-Cr spinel by replacing Fe 3+ and V 3+ ions, thereby enhancing the stability of the V-Cr spinel and serving as the fundamental reason for the promotion of its crystallization. This study provides additional crystal parameters for V-Cr spinel, which facilitates an understanding of the physicochemical properties of V-Cr spinel and is of great significance for the efficient extraction of V and Cr resources from high-chromium vanadium slag.

Bioimaging is essential in medical diagnostics and research, yet conventional optical methods are limited by photobleaching and background interference. Although near-infrared (NIR) persistent luminescent (PersL) materials avoid in situ excitation and autofluorescence, their signal decay and shorter-wavelength emission restrict long-term repetitive imaging. Here, we report an oxygen-vacancy-tailoring strategy in LaInO 3 :Nb,Cr, which exhibits broad NIR emission centered at 845 nm, efficient X-ray charging, and repeatable red-light recharging. Benefiting from its high-atomic-number host, LaInO 3 exhibits strong X-ray absorption, while Nb 5+ doping modulates oxygen vacancy (V O ), thereby boosting Cr 3+ NIR PersL by approximately 13 times. In vivo imaging reveals that LaInO 3 :Nb,Cr nanoparticles can be reactivated with a low X-ray dose (0.20 Gy) and repeatedly recharged in situ by red light, highlighting their potential for deep-tissue imaging. This work provides insights into defect-property relationships via ion doping and offers guidance for the rational design of PersL materials for practical applications.

Schwertmannite (Sch) is a widespread iron oxyhydroxysulfate mineral in acid mine drainage (AMD) systems, and its transformation strongly influences the environmental fate of chromium (Cr). However, the role of Ca(II), which is commonly introduced during alkaline neutralization of AMD, in regulating the transformation of Cr(VI)-adsorbed schwertmannite (Cr-Sch) and subsequent Cr redistribution remains insufficiently understood. In this study, transformation experiments were conducted under various pH conditions (3.0, 7.0, and 10.0) to investigate the effects of Ca(II) speciation on mineral transformation and Cr behavior. The results demonstrated that the transformation of Cr-Sch was predominantly pH-dependent. Under acidic conditions, Cr-Sch transformed into goethite via dissolution–recrystallization, resulting in transient Cr release followed by partial refixation. The presence of Ca(II) exerted only a minor influence due to weak interactions between Ca2+and positively charged mineral surfaces. Under alkaline conditions, Cr-Sch preferentially transformed into hematite through dehydroxylation and cation rearrangement, leading to the sustained release of adsorbed Cr(VI). In contrast, Ca(II) predominantly precipitated as CaCO3precipitate (calcite, aragonite, and vaterite) under alkaline conditions, which coated mineral surfaces and inhibited phase transformation and Cr release. These findings reveal that Ca(II) regulates Cr redistribution primarily through pH-dependent speciation and mineral–surface interactions, highlighting coupled geochemical processes governing iron mineral transformation and contaminant mobility in AMD environments. This study provides mechanistic insights for predicting Cr behavior and optimizing alkaline remediation strategies in mining-impacted systems.
