Influence of pyrolysis temperature on sludge biochar: the ecological risk assessment of heavy metals and the adsorption of Cd(II)

Wu Menglan,Liu Bo,Li Jun,Su Xintai,Liu Weizhen,Li Xiaoqin

Pyrolysis of sludge to biochar can not only reduce the sludge volume, toxic organic compound, and pathogens, but also be applied as effective adsorbents. However, the immobilization of heavy metals in the sludge and the properties of the biochar greatly rely on the pyrolysis temperature. In this paper, municipal sludge biochar (SBC) was prepared from 400 to 1000 °C. Pyrolysis immobilized heavy metals in sludge and the potential ecological risk of heavy metals significantly decreased to low level at temperature above 500 °C. At 700 °C, the adsorption capacity of Cd(II) reached a maximum (120.24 mg·g −1 ). The Cd(II) adsorption fitted the Pseudo-second-order model, indicating the existence of chemical adsorption. The adsorption capacity increased along with the initial pH and slowed down after pH reached 5.5. The existence of coexisting cations (Ca 2+ and Na + ) and anions (SO 4 2− and NO 3 − ) displayed different degree of inhibitory action on Cd(II) adsorption. The SEM, XRD, FTIR, and XPS analysis of sludge biochar before and after adsorption revealed that there were CdCO 3 , CdSO 4 , Cd 2 SiO 4 , Cd 3 (PO 4 ) 2 , and Cd 9 (PO 4 ) 6 appearing on the surface of sludge biochar, suggesting that the adsorption of Cd(II) by SBC included co-precipitation, ion exchange, coordination with π electrons, and complexation. It was confirmed that different properties formed by pyrolysis temperature made a difference in adsorption mechanism of sludge biochar.

Solvothermal synthesis of a new heterometallic Cd–Ba compound based on terephthalic acid: Catalytic property and therapeutic effect on diabetes

Jia-Shu Tu,Shao-Wen Zhang,Hong-An Ying,Wei-Wen Hong,Dan Chen

Presented is a new heterometallic compound, namely [Cd 2 Ba 2 (pdc) 4 (H 2 O) 4 (DMA) 2 ]} n · n (H 2 O) ( 1 , H 2 pdc = terephthalic acid, DMA is N , N ′-dimethylacetamide), which was created with the solvothermal reaction. The architectural analysis of X-ray indicated that the 1 reveals a three-dimensional skeleton according to one-dimensional infinite chains. After removal of the free along with coordinated solvent molecules, it contains 49.8% solvent-accessible volume and unsaturated coordination sites. The solvent-free form of 1 exhibits excellent catalytic effect for the addition reaction between diethylzinc and benzaldehyde. Its therapeutic effect and mechanism exploration on diabetes was conducted in this present research. Firstly, the abundance of intestinal flora in the gut was detected with real time RT-PCR assay. Besides, the measurement of the levels of sugar was conducted with blood glucose meter in the T2DM animal after compound treatment. The cytotoxicity of the 1 was evaluated with CCK-8 assay.

Three-dimensional porous AuNPs-decorated polyaniline array for ultrasensitive determination of trace Cd(II) and Pb(II) in drinking water

Guodong Zhu,Chengwei Feng,Lin Wang,Chenkai Zhou,Xiaole Weng,Kun Yang

Herein, a three-dimensional porous nanomaterials AuNPs-decorated polyaniline nanowire arrays/carbon nanotube (Au-PANI-array@CNT) was constructed by modified dilute polymerization and redox reaction. The Au-PANI-array@CNT exhibited a larger specific surface area (50.03 m 2 g −1 ) and abundant mesopores (average pore size: 19.6 nm), due to the vertical growth of PANI nanowire arrays on CNT. The Au-PANI-array@CNT composite with a three-dimensional interconnected porous structure exhibited abundant electroactive sites and high adsorption capacity, significantly enhancing the deposition and electrochemical reaction process of heavy metals. The AuNPs embedded on PANI nanowries can provide high catalytic activity and multidimensional electron transport channels, further improving the detection sensitivity. A sensing platform with ultra-high sensitivity (2091, 3890 μA μM −1 cm −2 ) and lower limit of detection (0.18, 0.15 nM) for Cd(II) and Pb(II) determination was developed based on the three-dimensional porous PANI composite. Furthermore, the sensing mechanism of Au-PANI-array@CNT with Cd(II) was explored by XPS and FTIR spectroscopy . The current response only decreased by 5% after being stored at room temperature for 2 months, indicating that the sensor has high reproducibility and stability. Finally, the analysis of drinking water samples verified the excellent practicability of the sensor for the simultaneous measurement of trace levels (nM) of Cd(II) and Pb(II).

Highly efficient detection of Cd(II) ions by a stannum and cerium bimetal-modified laser-induced graphene electrode in water

Yuehua Liu,Qiang Xue,Chunwen Chang,Rong Wang,Qun Wang,Xiaohan Shan

A novel laser-induced graphene (LIG) electrode modified with SnO 2 and CeO 2 nanoparticles (NPs) was created to detect Cd(II) ions via differential pulsed anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and contact angle (CA) analyses were used to characterize the physical and electrochemical properties of the electrode. Both the electrochemical activity and adsorption capacity of the carbon electrode were significantly enhanced. Due to the synergistic effects of SnO 2 and CeO 2 NPs, the modification enhanced the transfer of free electrons on the electrode surface, increasing the electrode sensitivity and accelerating the response speed in the detection process. The use of poly-aminobenzene sulfonic acid (p-ABSA) further increased the conductivity of the electrode. The enhanced adsorption energy and electron transfer properties of the modified electrode were also substantiated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Parameters such as Sn/Ce ratio, deposition time, number of polymerization cycles of p-ABSA and solution pH were optimized to determine the best detection conditions for Cd(II) ions. Under optimal conditions, our sensor showed a broad linear concentration range (0.1 ∼ 160 μg/L) with a low detection limit (0.01 μg/L). This sensor was also successfully applied for detection of Cd(II) ions in groundwater and tap water. Recovery rates ranged from 94 to 111% with a relative standard deviation (RSD) less than 6.06%. This sensor has good anti-interference ability, reproducibility and stability. Our results provide a promising sensor technique for efficient and rapid in situ monitoring of Cd(II) ions in aquatic environments.

Responses of a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon-degrading bacterium, Paraburkholderia fungorum JT-M8, to Cd (II) under P-limited oligotrophic conditions

Jinghua Li,Yiwen Ou,Lijuan Wang,Yue Zheng,Weiyun Xu,Jianbiao Peng,Xin Zhang,Zhiguo Cao,Junpei Ye

For the bioremediation of mixed-contamination sites, studies on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) degradation or Cd (II) tolerance in bacteria are commonly implemented in nutrient-rich media. In contrast, in the field, inocula usually encounter harsh oligotrophic habitats. In this study, the environmental strain Paraburkholderia fungorum JT-M8 was used to explore the overlooked Cd (II) defense mechanism during PAH dissipation under P-limited oligotrophic condition. The results showed that the growth and PAH degradation ability of JT-M8 under Cd (II) stress were correlated with phosphate contents and exhibited self-regulating properties. Phosphates mainly affected the Cd (II) content in solution, while the cellular distribution of Cd (II) depended on Cd (II) levels; Cd (II) was mainly located in the cytoplasm when exposed to less Cd (II), and vice versa. The unique Cd (II) detoxification pathways could be classified into three aspects: (i) Cd (II) ionic equilibrium and dose–response effects regulated by environmental matrices (phosphate contents); (ii) bacterial physiological self-regulation, e.g., cell surface-binding, protein secretion and active transport systems; and (iii) specific adaptive responses (flagellum aggregation). This study emphasizes the importance of considering culture conditions when assessing the metal tolerance and provides new insight into the bacterial detoxification process of complex PAH-Cd (II) pollutants.

Recognizing adsorption of aqueous Cr(VI), As(III), Cd(II), and Pb(II) ions by amino groups hollow polymer adsorbent

Yueyang Wang,Mingzhu Jin,Weiwei Lu,Fangfen Jing,Xinyang He,Jianchao Xie,Rongtai Yu

The mechanism from the molecular level and the selectivity for the removal of metal ions from aqueous has become a hotspot in current water treatment . In this study, a sulphydryl-modified hollow polymer adsorbent was designed with intrinsic amine and grafted sulphydryl groups for efficient uptake of Cr(VI), As(III), Cd(II), and Pb(II) by taking advantage of their properties of abundant functional groups, discrete hollow chambers, and high porosity. Interestingly, the benzenoid amine/quinoid imine functional groups have a stronger affinity for Cr(VI) than Cd(II) or As(III) and Pb(II). The formation of approximately 65.7% Cr(III) indicates the redox reaction from Cr(VI) to Cr(III). The electron-donating comes from benzenoid amine and oxidized to quinoid imine or protonated oxidized nitrogen units (-N =  + ) with Cr(VI) reduced to Cr(III) for the increase of more than double of quinoid imine and a new functional group of -N =  + . Ion exchange between –COO - groups and As(III)/Cd(II), the chelation of –SH groups for Pb(II)/As(III) are plausible mechanisms.

Sulfhydryl-Functionalized Amino Group Polymer Microcomposites toward Efficient Adsorption of Aqueous Cr(VI), As(III), Cd(II), and Pb(II)

Yueyang Wang,Weiwei Lu,Fangfen Jing,Mingzhu Jin,Xinyang He,Yuchen Xue,Yajun Hu,Rongtai Yu

The development of efficient adsorbents for heavy metal pollution, especially five toxic heavy metals, has attracted great research interest. Polymer-based adsorbents have aroused research value for their abundant functional groups and high porosity to the ability to capture metal ions. We designed a sulfhydryl-functionalized polymer microcomposite to take up Cr(VI), As(III), Cd(II), and Pb(II). The adsorption capacity achieved was 64.2 mg g–1 for Cr(VI), 44.9 mg g–1 for As(III), 35.5 mg g–1 for Cd(II), and 18.2 mg g–1 for Pb(II). Langmuir and Sips isotherm model is dominant for As(III), Cd(II), and Pb(II) adsorption. Pseudo-second-order kinetic models can better describe the adsorption behavior of Cr(VI), implying that chemisorption is accompanied by Cr(VI) adsorption. Cr(VI) simultaneous reduction to Cr(III) through the benzenoid amine oxidate pathway was the dominant mechanism, precipitation for Cd(II) adsorption was convinced, and chelation between As(III)/Pb(II) and─SH group and complexation between Pb(II) and C═O or benzene hydroxyl were a plausible mechanism for As(III) and Pb(II) adsorption.

Recognizing adsorption of Cd(Ⅱ) by a novel core-shell mesoporous ion-imprinted polymer: Characterization, binding mechanism and practical application

Hui Cao,Pu Yang,Tai Ye,Min Yuan,Jinsong Yu,Xiuxiu Wu,Fengqin Yin,Yan Li,Fei Xu

A novel monodispersed Cd(II) ion-imprinted polymer (IIP) was synthesized inside core-shell mesoporous silica (C-SMS) particles to improve the diffusion kinetics of the polymer. The synthesized IIP@C-SMS was characterized and subsequently used in solid-phase extraction (SPE) for the selective adsorption of Cd(II) in aquatic samples. The results indicated that IIP had been successfully assembled inside the C-SMS particles with a high specific surface area (546.3 m 2  g −1 ) and uniform mesoporous size (2.07 nm). The obtained IIP@C-SMS takes only 15 min to reach the adsorption equilibrium due to the highly developed mesoporous structure. IIP@C-SMS also presented a maximal adsorption capacity (201.9 μmol g −1 ) for Cd(II), which was much higher than that of NIP@C-SMS (80.3 μmol g −1 ). The relative selectivity coefficient of IIP@C-SMS for Cd(II)/M(II) (M = Cu(II), Pb(II), Cr(II), and Ni(II)) were 7.15, 8.70, 7.18, and 7.36, respectively, further confirming the satisfactory selectivity of IIP@C-SMS. The adsorption isotherms of IIP@C-SMS toward Cd(II) could be described by Langmuir model; whereas the adsorption kinetics could be fitted by the pseudo-second-order model, indicating chemisorption was the rate-limiting step. The FT-IR, ITC and XPS analysis further confirmed that the Cd(II)-induced cavities during the ion-imprinting process and the coordination between Cd(II) and –SH groups were the main adsorption mechanism. Furthermore, in real samples, IIP@C-SMS-SPE adsorbed approximately 93–104% of Cd(II). This work provides new insights for the design of novel macroporous sorbents for Cd(II).

Double-edged effects of polyvinyl chloride addition on heavy metal separation and biochar production during pyrolysis of Cd/Zn hyperaccumulator

Xiaoqiang Cui,Jianwei Zhang,Minghui Pan,Qiang Lin,Muhammad Bilal Khan,Xiaoe Yang,Zhenli He,Beibei Yan,Guanyi Chen

Pyrolysis is a promising technique to achieve the sustainable utilization of heavy metal hyperaccumulator derived from phytoremediation of contaminated soils. To investigate the feasibility of synergistic treatment of hyperaccumulator and plastic waste (i.e. polyvinyl chloride , PVC), co-pyrolysis of Sedum alfredii and different mass percentages of PVC (5–25 wt%) was conducted at 300–900 °C in the present study. High pyrolysis temperature and low PVC addition amount (5 wt%) effectively promoted the volatilization of Cd and Zn from S. alfredii , while high PVC addition amount (15 wt% and 25 wt%) caused a significant suppression effect at insufficient pyrolysis temperatures. After PVC addition, the yields of biochar increased by 5.18–37.19% as compared with the theoretical values. However, the concentrations of Cd and Zn leached from biochar significantly elevated with increasing PVC addition amount, indicating that the addition of PVC improved the mobility of Cd and Zn in biochar. Moreover, S. alfredii derived biochars showed considerable sorption capacity for Cd (87.6–198.3 mg/g). These results imply that the addition of PVC has double-edged effects on heavy metal separation and biochar production during pyrolysis of Cd/Zn hyperaccumulator, and low PVC addition amount and sufficient pyrolysis temperature are beneficial for the further utilization of biochar.

Simultaneous determination of trace Pb(II), Cd(II), and Zn(II) using an integrated three-electrode modified with bismuth film

Hui Li,Jie Zhao,Shifan Zhao,Guofeng Cui

Developing a reliable, sensitive and portable electrochemical sensor for precise determination of trace heavy metal ions in water is an attractive challenge. In this work, an integrated three-electrode sensor based on screen–printed gold working electrode (SPAuE) ex-situ electroplated bismuth film was developed via a facile and simple process for the determination of trace Pb(II), Cd(II), and Zn(II) by square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV). The bismuth film was deposited on SPAuE at a potential of −0.08 V (Bi/SPAuE −0.08V ). The results exhibited the sensor with a wide linear range (from 1 to 120 μg L -1 ) for the simultaneous detection of these three heavy metal ions. Besides, the detection limits of Pb(II), Cd(II), and Zn(II) for the sensor were respectively found to be 0.04 μg L −1 , 0.02 μg L −1 , and 0.05 μg L −1 (S/N = 3). The proposed sensor revealed good anti-interference ability, satisfactory repeatability with RSDs of less than 2.5% (n = 12), excellent reproducibility with RSDs of less than 2.5% (n = 6), and considerable stability. The detection accuracy of the Bi/SPAuE −0.08V based sensor was further evaluated via atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). Due to its simplicity in process, high detection performance and excellent reliability, such sensors are expected to find utility in portable heavy metal detection applications.

Experimental and theoretical study on the adsorption mechanism of Amino trimethylphosphate (ATMP) functionalized hydroxyapatite on Pb (II) and Cd (II)

Yanru Zhang,Mingzhu Xia,Fengyun Wang,Jianzhe Ma

Amino trimethylposphonate(ATMP) functionalized HAP were synthesized with different ATMP addition (0, 5%, 10%, 15%) and the adsorption performance towards Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ were studied in an aqueous solution. Under the optimum condition, HAP with ATMP addition of 10% (10AT-HAP) displayed the most efficient adsorption performance with the adsorption capacity of 1458.79 mg/g and 321.26 mg/g towards Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ , respectively, which improved 76% and 92% than that of the artificially prepared HAP in the laboratory, respectively. For both heavy metal ions , the adsorption mechanism also included ion exchange and surface complexation, in which the surface complexation played a predominant role. In addition, XRD showed that a new crystal phase was formed after Pb 2+ adsorption, while no new phase appeared after Cd 2+ adsorption, indicating that the adsorption mechanism of Pb 2+ involved dissolution-precipitation. The fitting results of adsorption isotherm and kinetics showed that the adsorption of Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ on HAP and 10AT-HAP were well fitted by the Langmuir isotherm model and Pseudo-second model. Moreover, Multiwfn wavefunction program based on density functional theory (DFT) was applied to deeply probe and vividly visualize the interaction sites, interaction types, interaction strength and the essence of interactions between HAP and ATMP or ATMP-HAP composite and heavy metal ions.

Graphene Oxide-Supported Organo-Montmorillonite Composites for the Removal of Pb(II), Cd(II), and As(V) Contaminants from Water

Jiaxing Wei,Mohamed F. Aly Aboud,Imran Shakir,Zhangfa Tong,Yuxi Xu

The application of sorbent in solving the water pollution induced by heavy metals or metalloids is severely hindered by poor sorption performance and high cost, especially in simultaneous removal. Design and synthesis of nanocomposites as effective sorbents has been widely considered as a promising approach to address this problem. Herein, graphene oxide supported organo-montmorillonite composite (GO-OM) was prepared through a facile ultrasonic-assisted method for the first time and exhibited excellent synergetic adsorption behavior for mixed pollutants in aqueous solutions. Unlike previous studies, the simultaneous removal process can be well-described by the Freundlich and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. The sorption capacities of GO-OM are very high for both metal cations and oxyanionic groups, showing excellent potential in the removal of multiple contaminants. Our study also reveals that GO-OM has high recycling efficiency and good performance under a low level concentration. All results suggest that GO-OM can be used as effective and ecofriendly sorbents for the removal of combined pollutants in an aqueous environment. This work contributes to developing high-performance graphene materials with organic minerals and gives deep insight into simultaneous sorption of metal ions, which can be potentially extended to other multiple pollutants.
