SnO 2 nanosheet-structured films were prepared on a fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrate using ZnO nanosheet as template. The as-prepared SnO 2 nanosheets contained plenty of nano-voids and were generally vertical to the substrate. TiO 2 nanoparticles were homogeneously deposited into the intervals between the SnO 2 nanosheets to prepare a hierarchically structured SnO 2 /TiO 2 hybrid film. The hybrid films were co-sensitized with CdS and CdSe quantum dots. The sensitized solar cells assembled with the SnO 2 /TiO 2 hybrid film showed much higher photoelectricity conversion efficiency than the cells assembled with pure TiO 2 films. The lifetime of photoinduced electron was also investigated through electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, which showed that the SnO 2 /TiO 2 hybrid film electrode is as long as the TiO 2 film electrode.

Ligand-induced chirality in asymmetric CdSe/CdS core–shell nanocrystals (NCs) has been extensively applied in chiral biosensors, regioselective syntheses and assemblies, circularly polarized luminescence (CPL), and chiroptic-based devices due to their excellent physiochemical properties, such as the tunable quantum confinement effects, surface functionality, and chemical stability. Herein, we present CdSe/CdS NCs with various morphologies such as nanoflowers, tadpoles, and dot/rods (DRs) with chirality induced by surface chiral ligands. The observed circular dichroism (CD) and CPL activities are closely associated with the geometrical characteristics of the nanostructures, such as the shell thickness and the aspect ratio of the CdSe/CdS NCs. Furthermore, in situ observations of the growth of tadpoles with a single tail indicate that the CD response is mainly attributed to the CdS shell, which has a maximum tail length of ∼45 nm (approximately λ/10 of the incident light wavelength). On the other hand, the CPL activity is only related to the CdSe core, and the activity benefits from a thin CdS shell with a relatively high photoluminescence quantum yield (QY). Further theoretical models demonstrated the aspect-ratio-dependent g-factor and QY variations in these asymmetric nanostructures. These findings provide insights into not only the asymmetric synthesis of CdSe/CdS NCs, but also the rational design of CdSe/CdS nanostructures with tunable CD and CPL activities.

Ligand-induced chirality in semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) has attracted attention because of the tunable optical properties of the NCs. Induced circular dichroism (CD) has been observed in CdX (X = S, Se, Te) NCs and their hybrids, but circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) in these fluorescent nanomaterials has been seldom reported. Herein, we describe the successful preparation of l- and d-cysteine-capped CdSe-dot/CdS-rods (DRs) with tunable CD and CPL behaviors and a maximum anisotropic factor (glum) of 4.66 × 10–4. The observed CD and CPL activities are sensitive to the relative absorption ratio of the CdS shell to the CdSe core, suggesting that the anisotropic g-factors in both CD and CPL increase to some extent for a smaller shell-to-core absorption ratio. In addition, the molar ratio of chiral cysteine to the DRs is investigated. Instead of enhancing the chiral interactions between the chiral molecules and DRs, an excess of cysteine molecules in aqueous solution inhibits both the CD and CPL activities. Such chiral and emissive NCs provide an ideal platform for the rational design of semiconductor nanomaterials with chiroptical properties.

The utilization of solar energy and fast-growing heterotrophic microbes for biofuel production has been recognized as a promising approach to achieve carbon neutrality and address energy crisis. In this work, we synthesized different kinds of photocatalysts based on graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ). We found that carbon dots modified-graphitic carbon nitride (CDs-g-C 3 N 4 ) showed the highest photocatalytic activity. Subsequently, we developed a photocatalyst-microbe hybrid (PMH) system by combining CDs-g-C 3 N 4 with an oleaginous yeast strain, Cutaneotrichosporon dermatis ZZ-46. Under visible light irradiation, the lipid yield of this PMH system reached 1.70 g/L at 120 h, representing a 36 % increase compared to the control. The photocatalytic reaction-induced ROS and the reductive photogenerated electrons facilitated ZZ-46 cells to synthesize more lipids. Furthermore, the fermentation residual of this PMH system was reutilized to prepare biochar via pyrolysis. The biochar generated at 550 °C (BC-550) demonstrated exceptional adsorption capabilities, particularly with a 57 % adsorption rate for methylene blue (MB), and maintained its perfect adsorption efficacy even after five regeneration cycles. These results offer promising avenues for addressing energy shortages and environmental contamination.

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive and often fatal disease, especially since the brain metastasis of TNBC has been a particularly severe manifestation. However, brain metastasis in TNBC at early stages often lacks noticeable symptoms, making it challenging to detect. Near-infrared II (NIR-II) fluorescence microscopic imaging obtains long wavelength, which enables reduced scattering, high spatial resolution and minimal autofluorescence, it is also a favorable imaging method for tumor diagnosis. PbS@CdS quantum dots (QDs) are one of the popular NIR-II fluorescence nanoprobes for well brightness. In this study, NIR-II emissive PbS@CdS QDs were utilized and further encapsulated with thiol-terminated poly(ethylene oxide) (SH-PEG, MW = 5000) to form PbS@CdS@PEG QDs nanoparticles (NPs). The obtained PbS@CdS@PEG QDs NPs were then characterized and further studied in detail. The PbS@CdS@PEG QDs NPs had large absorption spectra, exhibited strong NIR-II fluorescence emission at approximately 1300 nm, and possessed good NIR-II fluorescence properties. Then, the mice model of early-stage brain metastases of TNBC was established, and the PbS@CdS@PEG QDs NPs were injected into the tumor-bearing mice for NIR-II fluorescence microscopic bioimaging. The brain vessels and tumors of the living mice were detected with high spatial resolution under the NIR-II fluorescence microscopic imaging system with irradiation of 808 nm laser. The tumor tissues were further restricted and prepared as thin slices. The NIR-II fluorescence signals were collected from the tumor slices with high spatial resolution and signal-to-background ratio (SBR). Thus, the PbS@CdS@PEG QDs NPs-assisted NIR-II fluorescence microscopic system can effectively achieve targeting brain metastases of TNBC imaging, offering a novel and promising approach for TNBC-specific diagnosis.

MoS 2 thin film is deposited on ITO/CdS substrate by in-situ hydrothermal method, which is expected to be a potential absorber material for planar heterojunction solar cell due to its high absorber coefficient and carrier mobility. The CdS buffer layer provides a robust template for the quasi-epitaxial growth of MoS 2 with (0 0 2) preferred orientation by enjoying the analogical hexagonal structures and the shared sulfur atoms, resulting in a benign interface of CdS/MoS 2 . Then a device with ITO/TiO 2 /CdS/MoS 2 /Carbon-Ag structure is assembled after coating carbon-Ag electrode. The effects of the growth characteristics, morphology changes and optical properties of MoS 2 on the device performance are studied systematically. Finally, a primary efficiency of 0.12% is achieved using a P-type MoS 2 absorber with a thickness of 305 nm, exhibiting an outstanding stability. The one-dimensional solar cell capacitance simulator (SCAPS) is further used to reveal the bottleneck of device performance. After optimizing the doping density (1 × 10 15 cm −3 ) and defect density (<5 × 10 15 cm −3 ) of MoS 2 film as well as inserting a hole transport layer, the efficiency of MoS 2 planar device can be enhanced to 10.77%. This work provides an in-situ growth route for constructing a CdS/MoS 2 planar heterojunction as a potential candidate for the low-cost solar cells.

Antimony sulfide-selenide Sb 2 (S,Se) 3 as a promising absorber material has drawn extensive attention owing to its rewarding photoelectric properties, low toxicity, and earth abundant components. Here, an available and highly effective method, in situ hydrothermal growth accompanied with postselenization, is successfully applied to fabricate Sb 2 (S,Se) 3 solar cells. The rationale for the preparation of Sb 2 S 3 precursors by the hydrothermal method is discussed, and detailed characterization of Sb 2 (S,Se) 3 films selenized with different temperatures is also carried out. Finally, a solar cell with structure of FTO/CdS/Sb 2 (S,Se) 3 /Spiro-OMeTAD/Au is fabricated, which delivers an encouraging 6.14% efficiency with V oc of 732 mV, J sc of 14.6 mA cm −2 , and fill factor of 60.8%. This work provides valuable references for further development and improvement of Sb 2 (S,Se) 3 solar cells.

Copper, an essential element to play significant roles in human health, can bind β -amyloid peptide (A β ) to form Cu 2+ -A β complexes and spontaneously generate harmful reduced oxygen species leading to oxidative stress in the brain. Herein, we present a simple, novel off–on photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor for dual detection of Cu 2+ and A β based on V 2 O 5 nanofibers (NFs)/CdS nanoparticles (NPs) as the photoactive material. Specially, V 2 O 5 NFs were prepared by the recrystallization method and then modified onto indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode. CdS NPs were subsequently deposited onto the surface of V 2 O 5 NFs by electrochemical deposition method. The well-matched energy level between V 2 O 5 NFs and CdS NPs effectively suppresses the recombination of photogenerated electron and hole (e - /h + ) pairs, leading to the admirable photocurrent response. Cu 2+ specifically coordinated with CdS to produce a CuxS adduct, which quenched the PEC intensity due to the recombination of excited electrons and holes. Interestingly, the constructed PEC sensing platform also exhibited a sensitive response to A β based on the high affinity of Cu 2+ for A β . In the presence of A β , its recognition with Cu 2+ led to the generation of Cu 2+ -A β complexes onto the V 2 O 5 /CdS surface, resulting in the recovery of PEC response. Under optimal conditions, the proposed PEC sensor possessed the detection limits toward Cu 2+ and A β as low as 0.15 nM and 8.0 fM, respectively. The “off–on” PEC probe was successfully applied to the detection of Cu 2+ and A β in the practical samples. The simple and sensitive PEC probe of V 2 O 5 NFs/CdS NPs shows great potential applications in biological analysis and early disease diagnosis.

A simple microwave-assisted solvothermal method was used to prepare fluorescent nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) with high fluorescence quantum yield (79.63%) using citric acid and N -(2-hydroxyethyl)ethylenediamine as starting materials. The PVAm-g-N-CDs grafted products were synthesized by amide bond formation between the carboxylic groups of N-CDs and amine groups of polyvinylamine (PVAm). Fluorescent hydrogel films (PVAm-g-N-CDs/PAM) were synthesized by interpenetration polymer network polymerization of PVAm-g-N-CDs and acrylamide (AM). When used for ion detection, we found that the fluorescence of the hydrogel films was clearly quenched by addition of Hg 2+ . Repeatability tests on using the hydrogel films for Hg 2+ detection showed that they could be applied at least three times. The PVAm-g-N-CDs/PAM could serve as an effective fluorescent sensing platform for sensitive detection of Hg 2+ ions with a detection limit of 0.089 μmol/L. This work may offer a new approach for developing recoverable and sensitive N-CDs-based sensors for biological and environmental applications.

Phase and band gap engineering of (CdS)x(CuInS2)1−xnanomaterials is critical for their potential applications in photovoltaics and photocatalysis, yet it remains a challenge. Here, we report a precursor-mediated colloidal method for phase-control synthesis of alloyed (CdS)x(CuInS2)1−xnanocrystals with tunable band gap. When CuCl, InCl3, and Cd(AC)2·2H2O are used as the respective cation sources, wurtzite-structured alloyed (CdS)x(CuInS2)1−xnanocrystals can be synthesized with a tunable optical band gap ranging from 1.56 to 2.45 eV by directly controlling the molar ratio of the Cd precursor. Moreover, using Cu(S2CNEt2)2, In(S2CNEt2)3, and Cd(S2CNEt2)2as cation sources results in alloyed (CdS)x(CuInS2)1−xnanocrystals with a zinc-blende structure, demonstrating that the optical band gap of these nanocrystals can be compositionally tuned from 1.50 to 1.84 eV through precisely adjusting the molar ratio of Cd precursor. The results were validated through a comprehensive characterization approach employing XRD, TEM, HRTEM, STEM-EDS, XPS, UV-vis-NIR absorption spectroscopy, and Mott–Schottky analysis.

We report here a facile synthesis of ZnS/CdS heterojunction nanoparticles on an indium–tin oxide (ITO) electrode and their application in the ultrasensitive photoelectrochemical detection of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). The ZnS/CdS/ITO electrode was prepared using one-pot electrodeposition in an acidic solution containing ZnCl2, CdCl2 and Na2S2O3. The optimal ZnS/CdS heterojunction nanoparticles with a Zn/Cd atomic ratio of 1 : 1 showed a high photoelectrochemical response to L-cysteine. L-Cysteine-encapsulated liposome (cysteine@liposome) immunonanocapsules were prepared and used as the labels for photoelectrochemical detection of S. aureus. By coupling cysteine@liposome immunonanocapsule labeling with immunomagnetic separation/enrichment and photoelectrochemical analysis using the ZnS/CdS/ITO electrode, sensitive photoelectrochemical detection of S. aureus was achieved. Under optimal conditions, the linear range for photoelectrochemical detection of S. aureus was from 1 to 4000 CFU mL−1. The proposed method was successfully used for photoelectrochemical detection of S. aureus in milk and juice samples.

Traditional methods for treating Cr(VI)-containing wastewater often encounter issues such as high energy consumption, susceptibility to secondary pollution and limited treatment efficiency. In contrast, photocatalytic technology harnesses solar energy to efficiently reduce Cr(VI) to less toxic Cr(III) under mild conditions, offering advantages including operational simplicity and environmental friendliness, thereby providing a superior alternative. This study proposes a dual MOF precursor strategy to synthesise Cd-ZIF@NH 2 -MIL-68 composite materials, which undergo further sulphurisation to successfully construct a CdS/In 2 S 3 type-II heterojunction photocatalyst with a hollow structure. This material exhibits a larger specific surface area, increased exposure of active sites and abundant heterojunction interfaces. This heterojunction achieves an ultrafast, 99.26% removal of Cr(VI) within only 18 minutes under LED illumination, exhibiting outstanding stability with 88.10% activity retention after five cycles. Systematic characterization, photoelectrochemical tests and density functional theory (DFT) calculations collectively confirm that the successful band engineering in CdS/In 2 S 3 induces the formation of a type-II heterojunction, thereby significantly facilitating the efficient separation and migration of photogenerated charges. The combination of radical trapping experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy identifies photogenerated electrons (e - ) and superoxide radicals (·O 2 - ) as the predominant reactive species. This work provides new insights for designing highly efficient MOFs-derived heterojunction photocatalysts for the rapid remediation of Cr(VI) pollution.
