Ni/N co-doped NH2-MIL-88(Fe) derived porous carbon as an efficient electrocatalyst for methanol and water co-electrolysis

Jingchuan Guo,Yan Gao,Xuankai Cao,Linxuan Li,Xin Yu,Shidan Chi,Haoyu Liu,Guohong Tian,Xudong Zhao

The technology of using electricity generated from renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power for water electrolysis to produce hydrogen has achieved high efficiency, high purity, and environmental friendliness. However, its further development is constrained by the high overpotential of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the high cost of precious metal catalysts. The methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) as an alternative to OER can significantly reduce overall energy consumption and accelerate the hydrogen evolution reaction. This study innovatively utilizes the metal-organic framework (MOF) of NH₂-MIL-88(Fe) to introduce Ni doping, preparing a series of Fe x Ni y -MOF and their bimetallic carbon derivatives (Fe x Ni y /C) through solvothermal synthesis and high-temperature carbonization. Results show that FeNi₂/C exhibited excellent performance in OER, with a Tafel slope of 38.69 mV·dec⁻ 1 and an overpotential of 335 mV at 10 mA cm⁻ 2 , comparable to RuO₂. In MOR, the overpotential was 193 mV, reduced by approximately 140 mV compared to OER, with outstanding stability. The catalytic mechanism was analyzed using ion chromatography, revealing the key role of Ni doping in enhancing catalytic activity and stability. This study provides new strategies for improving the electrocatalytic hydrogen production efficiency of renewable energy and reducing the production cost of hydrogen energy.

MXene-supported Co3Ti and single-atom Co catalyst activated PMS for efficient removal of Pb-EDTA: The involvement of Co (Ⅳ)

Haoran Song,Longyu Chen,Yi hang Xu,Chen Li,Xuewei Hu,Yingjie Li,Shugen Liu,Jianhong Huang,Qun Zhao,Jie Li,Senlin Tian

Activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) by MXene-supported Co 3 Ti and single-atom Co catalyst (Co@MXene) achieved the efficient decomplexation of lead-ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (Pb-EDTA) and the recovery of lead (Pb) over the pH range of 3.0–9.0. The removal efficiency of Pb-EDTA reached up to 93.6 % within 30 min and total Pb was completely removed within 15 min. The coordination structure differences between Co 3 Ti and single-atom Co induced their various electron transfer pathways with PMS, in which Co 3 Ti brought key effect to the generation of Co (Ⅳ), while single-atom Co and regenerative Co (II) were responsible for the generation of HO and SO 4 − and 1 O 2 , More importantly, the oxygen transfer reaction from O-Co 3 Ti to Co 3 Ti-O and the reducibility of MXene triggered the regeneration of low-valent Co. This study proposed a novel mechanism of Co (Ⅳ) generation and low-valent Co regeneration, which improved the understanding of the electron transfer pathways of Co@MXene/PMS oxidation process.

Catalytic CO Oxidation on the Cu+-Ov-Ce3+ Interface Constructed by an Electrospinning Method for Enhanced CO Adsorption at Low Temperature

Dong Liu,Rundong Wu,Xianjie Wang,Runping Ye,Feiyang Hu,Xiaohan Chen,Tongtong Wang,Bingying Han,Zhang-Hui Lu,Gang Feng,Rongbin Zhang

It is crucial to eliminate CO emissions using non-noble catalysts. Cu-based catalysts have been widely applied in CO oxidation, but their activity and stability at low temperatures are still challenging. This study reports the preparation and application of an efficient copper-doped ceria electrospun fiber catalyst prepared by a facile electrospinning method. The obtained 10Cu–Ce fiber catalyst achieved complete CO oxidation at a temperature as low as 90 °C. However, a reference 10Cu/Ce catalyst prepared by the impregnation method needed 110 °C to achieve complete CO oxidation under identical reaction conditions. Asymmetric oxygen vacancies (ASOV) at the interface between copper and cerium were constructed, to effectively absorb gas molecules involved in the reaction, leading to the enhanced oxidation of CO. The exceptional ability of the 10Cu–Ce catalyst to adsorb CO is attributed to its unique structure and surface interaction phase Cu+-Ov-Ce3+, as demonstrated by a series of characterizations and DFT calculations. This novel approach of using electrospinning offers a promising technique for developing low-temperature and non-noble metal-based catalysts.

Electrochemical detection of carbendazim using molecularly imprinted poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) on Co,N co-doped hollow carbon nanocage@CNTs-modified electrode

Shuya Xue,Jiamin Zou,Jiapeng Li,Jingkun Xu,Hui Chen,Linyu Wang,Yansha Gao,Xuemin Duan,Limin Lu

Precisely detecting trace pesticides and their residues in food products is crucial for ensuring food safety. Herein, a high-performance electrochemical sensing platform was developed for the detection of carbendazim (CBZ) using Co,N co-doped hollow carbon nanocage@carbon nanotubes (Co,N-HC@CNTs) obtained from core–shell ZIF-8@ZIF-67 combined with a poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP). The Co,N-HC@CNTs exhibited excellent electrocatalytic performance, benefitting from the synergistic effect of CNTs that provide a large specific surface area and excellent electrical conductivity , Co,N co-doped carbon nanocages that offer high electrocatalytic activity and hollow nanocage structures that ensure rapid diffusion kinetics. The conductive PEDOT-MIP provided specific binding sites for CBZ detection and significantly amplified the detection signal. The sensor showed superior selectivity for CBZ with an extremely low detection limit of 1.67 pmol L −1 . Moreover, the method was successfully applied to detect CBZ in tomato, orange and apple samples, achieving satisfactory recovery and accuracy, thus demonstrating its practical feasibility.

Synergism of heterovalent valence state and oxygen vacancy defect engineering in Co/S co-doped TiO2 for nitrogen photoreduction to ammonia

Longyan Chen,Pengkun Zhang,Dong-Hau Kuo,Jianmei Jiang,Binghong Wu,Zhengjie Su,Osman Ahmed Zelekew,Jinguo Lin,Dongfang Lu,Xiaoyun Chen

Herein, we demonstrate a Co/S doped TiO2 bimetal sulfur oxide nanoparticle catalyst (labeled CoTiOS) with heterovalent Co states and abundant oxygen vacancy (Ov) defects for the photocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (PNRR) in an ambient environment. Co/S co-doping converted TiO2 into a catalyst for visible light photocatalytic nitrogen fixation. The incorporation of Co endows TiO2 with better electrical conductivity and electron trapping ability. The introduction of sulfur adjusts the amount of Ov and Co3+/Co2+ ratio. Ov acts as an active site for trapping H2O and activating H2O to generate a proton for the N2 reduction reaction. Active atoms Co3+ were exposed and activated for N2, and electrons hopping between Co2+ and Co3+ enhanced electron transfer. CoTiOS-3 with appropriate Co/S doping has abundant Ov, suitable heterovalent Co3+/Co2+ ratios, higher surface active sites, smaller crystal sizes, higher specific surface area (SBET), and fast transfer of electrons, and it exhibited a super PNRR activity of 491.56 μmol g−1 h−1, an apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 1.89% at 420 nm and a solar-to-ammonia (STA) conversion efficiency of 0.083% in pure water under AM1.5G light irradiation. It also exhibited excellent stability and persistence and shows potential for photocatalytic nitrogen fixation.

Engineering spin polarization of encaging Co nanoparticles in atomic CoNx sites evoke high valent Co species for boosting organic compound oxidation

Liang Zhang,Jialiang Rui,Yiqian Li,Zhizhi Yang,Shiro Kubuki,Junhu Wang,Bofan Zhang

Precise manipulation of the catalytic spin configuration and delineation of the relationship between spin related properties and oxidation pathways remain significant challenges in Fenton-like processes. Herein, encapsulated cobalt nanoparticles and cobalt-nitrogen-doped carbon moieties, endowed with confinement effects and variations in shell curvature were constructed via straightforward pyrolysis strategies, inducing alterations in magnetic anisotropy, electronic energy levels and spin polarization. The enhanced spin polarization at cobalt sites leads to a reduction in crystal field splitting energy and an increase in electronic spin density. This phenomenon facilitated electron transfer from cobalt orbitals to p z orbitals of oxygen species within peroxymonosulfate molecules, thereby promoting the formation of high-valent cobalt species. The encapsulation effectively stabilized cobalt nanoparticles, mitigating their dissolution or deactivation during reactions, which in turn enhances stability and durability in continuous flow processes. The high-valent cobalt species within the shell exhibit increased exposure and generate localized high concentrations, thereby intensifying interactions with migrating pollutants and enabling efficient and selective oxidation of emerging compounds with elevated redox potentials. This work underscores the profound impact of confined encapsulation curvature and spin polarization characteristics of metal sites on catalytic oxidation pathways and performance, opening novel avenues for spin engineering in practical environmental catalysis.

Preparation of N-doped Co/NC-CeO2-hmta by pyrolysis of Co-Ce-Salen/hmta toward hydrogenation of nitroarenes under N2H4

Muhammad Jawad Ahmad,Xue Lu,Liye Liang,Guangming Li

Since catalytic chemoselective reduction of corresponding nitroarenes is a significant route to produce functionalized anilines, developing inexpensive and highly active catalyst is imperia. Herein, the Co-Ce-H 2 salen-hmta composite was first prepared by grinded completely the mixture of Co-H 2 Salen and hexamethylenetetramine (hmta) in 1:1 mol ratio in a mortar. The 3d–4f hetero-metal Co-Ce-H 2 salen coordination polymer acted as a support precursor and hmta provided the nitrogen source. Then, a target catalyst of Co/NC-CeO 2 -hmta were afforded by pyrolysis of Co-Ce-H 2 salen-hmta composite at 800°C in the presence of argon atmosphere. When the target catalyst of Co/NC-CeO 2 -hmta and reference catalysts were applied for the hydrogenation of nitroarenes under N 2 H 4 , the target catalyst of Co/NC-CeO 2 -hmta exhibited better performance than reference catalysts in terms of conversion, yield, selectivity, and recyclability. Spectral analysis suggested that the high catalytic performance of a target catalyst of Co/NC-CeO 2 -hmta were attributed to highly dispersed metallic Co 0 , rich oxygen vacancies, and nitrogen-doped carbon matrix.

Opposite sensing response of H2 and CO on In₂O₃−Co₃O₄ nanocomposite-based gas sensors over a wide temperature range

Ziwen Yao,Jing Li,Shuai Nie,Yuan Wang,Xitao Yin,Yunxia He

Utilizing p-n composite materials for the fabrication of metal-oxide semiconductor (MOS) gas sensors represents a promising strategy to achieve exceptional selectivity in detecting reducing gases such as hydrogen (H₂) and carbon monoxide (CO). However, previous studies have typically achieved this selectivity under fixed operating temperatures and single molar ratios. This study presents the successful synthesis of n-In₂O₃/p-Co₃O₄ nanoparticles, featuring a p-n heterojunction structure, using a simple composite preparation method. The gas-sensing properties, crystal structure, morphology, and chemical states were comprehensively characterized using an electrochemical workstation, XRD, TEM, HRTEM, and XPS. Experimental results show that the gas sensor responses of the n-In₂O₃/p-xCo₃O₄ composites (with x = 10.5, 15, 18, 21), annealed at 500°C within an operational temperature range of 350°C to 400°C, exhibit distinct behaviors for CO and H₂ gases. This addresses the challenge of achieving selective detection across varying conditions. Notably, the n-In₂O₃/p-18Co₃O₄ composites display opposing response characteristics for both gases across a broad temperature range of 200°C to 400°C. At 350°C, the n-In₂O₃/p-18Co₃O₄ sensor demonstrates optimal selectivity, significantly minimizing cross-sensitivity and improving detection accuracy and reliability. The sensor also shows excellent stability, with consistent responses under repetitive exposure conditions. By improving both sensor selectivity and stability, this research advances gas detection technologies, with potential applications in sustainable energy and public health monitoring.

Degradation of methylene blue by ozone oxidation activated by N and S co-doped biochar supported Co–Al layered double hydroxides

Danli Tang,Dengjie Zhong,Yongxian Zhou,Yunlan Xu,Tanxia Xiang,Wantao Li,Yuanfang Yang,Chunmiao Fan,Jisai Chen

Dye pollution has caused great harm to the ecological environment. In this paper, N and S co-doped biochar (K-NSBC) was obtained by a calcination–alkali activation method, then Co/Al layered double hydroxide (Co/Al-LDH) was anchored on it by a co-precipitation method to activate ozone (O3) to degrade methylene blue (MB). When the O3 concentration was 3.12 mg L−1, catalyst dosage was 0.6 g L−1, the MB concentration was 25 mg L−1, and pH was 6.8, the degradation efficiency of MB reached 99.65%. The degradation efficiency still remained at 92.75% even after Co/Al-LDH@K-NSBC was recycled five times. The results of material characterization and quenching experiments show that the presence of oxygen vacancies (Ov) on the metal surface not only accelerates the exchange of oxygen and the generation of active free radicals, but also promotes the conversion of Co3+/Co2+ and the activation of O3. Pyridine N, graphite N and thiophene S provide electron-rich groups, which promote the activation of O3 to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS). Among them, 1O2 is the main ROS leading to the degradation of MB, and its intermediates ˙OH and ˙O2− also participate in the oxidation of MB. This study is expected to provide new ideas and directions for the design of highly efficient and stable ozonation activators and industrialization of non-phase catalytic ozonation degradation of dye wastewater.

A Dual-sensitive Hydrogel Based on Poly(Lactide-co-Glycolide)-Polyethylene Glycol-Poly(Lactide-co-Glycolide) Block Copolymers for 3D Printing

Yang Zhou,Yuecheng Cui,Li-Qun Wang

The thermo-sensitive hydrogel formed by triblock copolymers of polyethylene glycols and aliphatic polyesters serves as a promising candidate for bioink due to its excellent biodegradability and biocompatibility. However, the thermo-crosslinking alone cannot achieve a robust hydrogel to support the 3D printed constructs without collapse. Herein, a photo-crosslinkable group was introduced into the triblock copolymers to achieve a dual-sensitive hydrogel. A triblock copolymer poly(lactide-co-glycolide)-polyethylene glycol-poly(lactide-co-glycolide) decorated with acrylate group in the chain end was prepared. The obtained aqueous solutions of the copolymers could transform into hydrogels with excellent shear thinning properties and rapid elastic recovery properties spontaneously on the increase of temperature. The resulted thermogels also allowed for photo-crosslinking by exposure to ultraviolet radiation, with storage modulus dramatically increased to stable the printed constructs. Through a two-step crosslinking strategy, complicated tissue-like constructs with high shape fidelity can be printed using the dual-sensitive inks. Moreover, the mechanical strength, swelling ratio, and printability of the hydrogels can be tuned by varying the substitution rate of the acrylate group without compromising the inks’ extrudability. We expect that the dual-sensitive hydrogels may be used as bioinks to print large constructs for applications in tissue engineering.

Poly(lactide-co-glycolide) microspheres with good biocompatibility

Runze An,Wenmin Tang,Zhanpeng Zhao,Wentao Liu,Liang Kan

Purpose: Curcumin and icariin have multiple pharmacological effects and are widely used in various fields, but their short half-life, poor bioavailability and low water solubility greatly limit their application in clinical medicine. Poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) loaded microspheres not only solve these problems, but also have no toxicity in degradation. Methods: To verify whether PLGA drugloaded microspheres have good biocompatibility, the present experiments used the emulsification-solvent evaporation method to prepare PLGA drug-loaded microspheres and successfully performed the loading of curcumin and icariin. Results: The scanning electron microscopy showed that the particle sizes of the PLGA microspheres were 2–15 μm, icariin/PLGA microspheres were 3–22 μm and curcumin/PLGA microspheres were 5–30 μm. Moreover, the surface of the microspheres was smooth and spherical. Furthermore, the drug loading and encapsulation rate were good. In vitro experiments revealed that the prepared PLGA microspheres were safe and nontoxic, and that they could release drugs stably and slowly. Moreover, their proliferation ability was unaffected after inoculation into bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs), and Alcian blue Staining was performed at last, demonstrating their biocompatibility and important applications in tissue engineering.

Fe2O3 aided NiFe2O4 enhanced CO2 hydrogenation to CO

Jiaojiao Xie,Xinyu Zhi,Bowen Lu,Dikun Hong,Liqi Zhang

NiFe 2 O 4 has been widely applied in CO 2 hydrogenation for its excellent redox properties. However, NiFe 2 O 4 samples usually exhibited complex performance, rapid inactivation followed by slow activation, and poor hydrogenation selectivity. In this work, the complex behavior of NiFe 2 O 4 in CO 2 hydrogenation was studied, and the influence of surface oxide species(NiO and Fe 2 O 3 ) on its catalytic performance was probed on NiFe 2 O 4 -ww through magnetic water washing. NiFe 2 O 4 -ww was observed to predominantly produce CO with nearly 100% selectivity at lower temperatures and demonstrated a higher CO 2 conversion rate of 71.90% at 700 °C. However, under high-temperature reducing conditions, NiFe 2 O 4 -ww underwent rapid reduction to form Fe Ni alloy, which induced sintering and carbon deposition, thereby leading to a significant decline in catalytic activity. Surface NiO species on NiFe 2 O 4 enhanced CO 2 hydrogenation at lower temperatures but reduced the selectivity towards CO. Surface Fe 2 O 3 species enhanced the catalytic resistance to reduction, thereby improving catalyst stability by inhibiting the accumulation of carbon deposition. The effect of residual oxides on the NiFe 2 O 4 surface may give insight into understanding the deactivation behavior of Fe Ni alloy in CO 2 hydrogenation.
