Developing an efficient electrocatalyst that enables the efficient electrochemical conversion from CO 2 to CH 4 across a wide potential range remains a formidable challenge. Herein, we introduce a precatalyst strategy that realizes the in situ electrochemical reconstruction of ultrafine Cu 2 O nanodomains, intricately coupled on the CeO 2 surface (Cu 2 O/CeO 2 ), originating from the heterointerface comprised of ultrafine CuO nanodomains on the CeO 2 surface (CuO/CeO 2 ). When served as the electrocatalyst for the electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction, Cu 2 O/CeO 2 delivers a selectivity higher than 49 % towards CH 4 over a broad potential range from −1.2 V to −1.7 V vs . RHE, maintaining negligible activity decay for 20 h. Notably, the highest selectivity for CH 4 reaches an impressive 70 % at −1.5 V vs . RHE. Through the combination of comprehensive analysis including synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy, spherical aberration-corrected high-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscope as well as the density functional theoretical calculation, the efficient production of CH 4 is attributed to the coherent interface between Cu 2 O and CeO 2 , which could converted from the original CuO and CeO 2 interface, ensuring abundant active sites and enhanced intrinsic activity and selectivity towards CH 4 .

In this work, we proposed a straightforward self-assembly and in-situ deposition protocol to construct Cu 2 O/g-C 3 N 4 /Ag composites, which demonstrated peroxidase-like attribute and exceptional SERS activity. These composites proved to be an effective SERS analysis tool for detecting organic fungicides like malachite green (MG) and crystal violet (CV). Remarkably, they achieved detection limits as low as 10 −9 M in DI water as well as fish pond water, and exhibited a strong linear correlation between logarithmic concentrations and SERS intensities (R 2 ≥ 0.97). Beyond that, with the aid of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), the peroxidase-like Cu 2 O/g-C 3 N 4 /Ag composites rapidly degraded MG and CV molecules within just 5 min. Furthermore, their practical reusability based on the peroxidase-like reaction was proved by high SERS performance across 5 detection cycles. These results emphasize the immense potential of Cu 2 O/g-C 3 N 4 /Ag in SERS-based trace fungicide detection and suggest future applications in ecological restoration through peroxidase-like reactions.

Cuproptosis offers a promising and selective therapeutic strategy for cancer therapy. To fully realize its potential, the development of novel cuproptosis therapeutic agents and the achievement of efficient copper release are critical steps forward. Herein, closely-contacted Cu 2 O-CoWO 4 nanosheet heterojunctions (CCW-NH) are successfully synthesized using an in-situ process for cuproptosis therapy. The efficient release of copper ions from CCW-NH can be triggered by ultrasound irradiation, primarily due to the generation of superoxide radicals as the sonodynamic agents via the Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism. When subjected to the combined effects of ultrasound and laser irradiation, the effective release of copper ions is increased by 1.7 times compared to the untreated group, significantly enhancing the efficiency of cuproptosis. And the incorporation of CCW-NH and L-arginine into the temperature-sensitive injectable hydrogel (HP-CCW@LA) ultimately achieved a tumor inhibition rate of up to 95.1%. L-arginine, serving as a reducing agent, enabled the sustained release of highly active Cu + during treatment. Notably, after treating tumors with HP-CCW@LA, the tumor microenvironment is leveraged to promote copper ion conversion, which offers the potential for monitoring tumor therapy efficacy through magnetic resonance imaging. This work offers a novel integrated strategy for the development of new cuproptosis agents and therapeutic evaluation.

Rapid charge recombination, limited light response, and slow surface reactions were observed in the photocatalysts, thereby limiting their future-oriented applications in photocatalytic hydrogen production through water splitting. Constructing a multi-channel charge separation photocatalysis system could solve those questions. In this study, Pd-TiO 2 -Cu 2 O composites were successfully accomplished via a facile chemical reduction method. The Pd-TiO 2 -Cu 2 O composite exhibited improved photocatalytic hydrogen production (13069.7 μmol g −1 h −1 ), which was over 6 times as much as that of pure TiO 2 . Based on the photo/electrochemical measurements, it was proposed that a Type II heterojunction was formed at the TiO 2 -Cu 2 O interface under light irradiation, and concurrently, a Schottky barrier was established between Pd and TiO 2 . Accordingly, the Type II heterojunction-created built-in electric field would facilitate the separation of photogenerated charges. Simultaneously, the introduction of Pd accelerates the accumulation of electrons and further enhances the charge transfer rate. The combination of such a Type II heterojunction and Schottky junction synergistically created a multi-channel charge separation system, optimizing surface reactions and thus improving photocatalytic efficiency. This work provided a rational approach for building efficient multi-component photocatalysis systems featuring Type II heterojunction/Schottky junction for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

A molecularly imprinted sensor is smartly designed by using Cu 2 O as the core and SiO 2 as the imprinting layer, which can be used for the detection of doxycycline (Dox). As a peroxidase mimic, Cu 2 O can catalyze colorless o -phenylenediamine (oPD) to yellow 2,3-diaminophenazine (DAP), however, the peroxidase-like activity of the Cu 2 O core is shielded after Dox is rebound to the molecularly imprinted SiO 2 (MI-SiO 2 ). As the absorbance of DAP at 416 nm ( A 416 ) is linearly related to the concentration of Dox, spectroscopic detection of Dox can be achieved. The linear range is 0.1–10 μM, and the limit of detection (LOD) is 0.046 μM. In addition, a multicolor sensing strategy is also proposed by using the smartphone-based color recognition software. The ratio of green (G) value to blue (B) value is linearly related to the concentration of Dox, and thus colorimetric detection of Dox is achieved by the RGB color analysis. The linear range is 0.1–10 μM, and the LOD is 0.074 μM. Finally, dual-mode detection of Dox in lake water and honey is achieved with the developed molecularly imprinted sensor.

Dark-field microscopy (DFM) as a single particle analysis (SPA) technique has been developed rapidly in recent years because of its high signal-to-noise ratio, enhanced sensitivity, and sufficient spatial and temporal resolution. Here, an in situ single Au@Cu2O core–shell nanoparticle (Au@Cu2O NP) light scattering imaging analysis was reported to realize the ultrasensitive detection of biothiols–cysteine (Cys) and glutathione (GSH). Based on the specific binding of Cu(I) with –SH to the formation of the Cu–S bond, it triggered the decomposition of the Cu2O shell and exposure of the Au nanorods (Au NRs) in the presence of biothiols. Moreover, the process of Cu2O shell dissolution has been observed in real time under DFM, which indicated that the scattering color changed from bright green to dark red and the scattering intensity decreased, correspondingly. Compared with ex situ SPA, in situ SPA exhibited significantly high sensitivity due to the effect of concentration polarization, which exhibited linear correlations over broad concentration ranges (Cys: 0.05–3 nM, GSH: 0.1–10 nM), with low detection limits of 15.52 pM (Cys) and 75.07 pM (GSH). Therefore, this work provides a smart strategy to find promising applications for the ultrasensitive detection of biomolecules through SPA.

Kanamycin (KAN) is an aminoglycoside antibiotic employed for the treatment of bacterial infections in livestock and poultry and is widely used as a veterinary drug in animal husbandry. Its overuse poses serious threats to public health and ecosystems; while traditional detection methods cannot meet the requirements of widespread application and rapid detection, developing rapid and reliable technology for KAN detection is essential. In this study, a colorimetric aptasensor was developed to rapidly detect KAN residues, leveraging the enhanced catalytic effect of aptamers on the peroxidase-like activity of the Cu2O/hemin-graphene oxide (Cu2O/hemin-GO) nanozyme. In the presence of hydrogen peroxide, the Cu2O/hemin-GO nanozyme demonstrated excellent peroxidase-like catalytic activity, oxidizing 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB). The adsorption of aptamers on the nanozyme surface increased the negative charge density and significantly enhanced the affinity of the nanozyme for the positively charged chromogenic substrate TMB, boosting the catalytic activity nearly threefold. Upon exposure to KAN, the specific binding of aptamers to KAN reduced their adsorption on the Cu2O/hemin-GO nanozyme, leading to a decrease in the peroxidase-like activity of the Cu2O/hemin-GO nanozyme and a corresponding reduction in color change. The aptasensor exhibited excellent sensitivity with a linear detection range from 0.1 pM to 1 μM and a detection limit of 16 fM. The recovery rates for KAN in milk samples ranged from 92.05% to 110.71%. Furthermore, the colorimetric aptasensor demonstrated high selectivity and reproducibility. Overall, the colorimetric approach achieved the economical, simple and sensitive detection of KAN residues, indicating its promising potential in real-world applications. In addition, this sensing method could be applied to other targets by replacing the aptamer, providing a strategy for developing sensors facilitating rapid detection.

The development of high-efficiency photocatalysts for water splitting to hydrogen (H 2 ) is crucial for alleviating energy crisis and environmental problems. In this study, a novel type-II ternary heterojunction photocatalyst, CDs/NH 2 -MIL-125 (Ti)/Cu 2 O, was fabricated through the integration of NH 2 -MIL-125 (Ti) with Cu 2 O and carbon dots (CDs), exhibited excellent photocatalytic H 2 production rate of 12817.1 μmol/g/h with apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 17.13 % under visible light irradiation. Characterization revealed a uniform and dense structural integration with a high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of 275.9 m 2 g −1 and a suitable energy band gap of 2.18 eV. Furthermore, the heterostructures promoted efficient photo-generated carrier separation and enhanced reduction capabilities . Notably, CDs, serving as cocatalysts or electron acceptors, improved visible light utilization and electron migration, significantly boosting H 2 production. Insights from electron spin resonance (ESR) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations supported the migration mechanisms of electrons. This work presents a significant advance in photocatalytic technology for sustainable energy by designing high-performance CDs-modified heterojunction photocatalysts.

To overcome the easy detachment issue faced by surface-loaded photocatalytic nanoparticles or structures on textiles for personal protective equipment (PPE) applications, a Cu 2 O@polyacrylonitrile (PAN) composite photocatalytic nanofiber film was created by a simple and robust electrospinning process. The photocatalytic PAN shell encapsulated photocatalytic Cu 2 O nanoparticles, which solved the detachment issue and ensured its long-time stability and durability because Cu 2 O nanoparticles were well protected by PAN to prevent their loss and the potential leakage of copper ions from their direct contact with the environment. The Cu 2 O/PAN heterojunction facilitated the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs in both of them due to their matched electronic band structures, which induced a higher light response behavior, reduced the interface resistance, improved the charge transport efficiency, and subsequently enhanced its photocatalytic performance. Thus, it demonstrated a largely enhanced photocatalytic organic degradation on phenol and bacteria disinfection performance on Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) than the pure PAN photocatalytic nanofiber film. The Cu 2 O@PAN composite photocatalytic nanofiber film could be utilized as the core material of PPE for the prevention of respiratory infectious disease transmission and infection, which could effectively operate under visible light illumination and have good durability/reusability even after washing repeatedly.

Semiconductor metal-oxide/metal heterostructures with synergetic properties have potential applications in photocatalysis and optical sensors. Here, Cu 2 O sub-micro cubes were synthesized under environmentally benign conditions using 2, 2, 6, 6-tetramethylpyperdine-1-oxyl (TEMPO)-oxidized cellulose nanofibrils as a reducing and stabilizing agent. Then the surface of the Cu 2 O cubes was decorated with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) by a substitution reaction. The Cu 2 O/Ag heterostructures within the cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) network were employed as a promising surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) assay for efficient sensing of methylene blue (MB), reaching a maximum enhancement factor (EF) of 4.0 × 10 4 . Their SERS intensities depended on the coverage density of AgNPs and the wavelength of the excitation laser. The excellent SERS performance may result from the charge transfer between Ag and Cu 2 O molecules and the strong electromagnetic field at the interface. The CNF-Cu 2 O/Ag substrates were capable of detecting MB dye down to 10 −8 M level with a relative standard deviation of 10–15%, demonstrating great sensitivity and reproducibility.

To enhance the bactericidal efficacy of TiO 2 /Cu 2 O composite coatings and mitigate the issue of ongoing oxidation, we introduced different sizes of spherical silica as supporting materials, combined with TiO 2 /Cu 2 O, to develop a novel antibacterial, antioxidant photocatalytic system. The synthesized ST and STC samples underwent comprehensive characterization using transmission electron microscopy. Subsequent analyses employing X-ray diffraction and UV–Vis diffuse reflectance systematically validated the preserved structural integrity and enhanced photochemical stability of the developed materials. The introduction of silica spheres not only significantly increased the specific surface areas of TiO 2 and Cu 2 O, thereby enhancing their interfacial contact, but also promoted efficient charge separation of photogenerated electrons and holes. Furthermore, this approach reduced the required amount of TiO 2 and Cu 2 O, leading to cost savings. These advantages make the developed coating highly suitable for industrial-scale sterilization applications.
