Due to native deficiency of the interfacial mismatch between Al 2 O 3 and Al-melt, as well as micron-Al 2 O 3 segregation at matrix grain boundaries (GBs), achieving both high strength and fracture toughness has been the long-lasting challenge for Al-CuO composite fabricated by conventional casting. Herein, we report a novel manufacturing of Al-CuO composite via shift-speed ball-milling (SSBM) of Al-5 wt.% CuO powders and afterwards subjected to hot-pressing (HP) as well as heat treatment. Comprehensive characterization shows that in-situ generation of the two types of Al 2 O 3 with intragranular distribution, including δ*-Al 2 O 3 particles (~200 nm) and γ-Al 2 O 3 whiskers (length of ~150 nm, thickness of ~20 nm), was governed by a diffusion-assisted nucleation-regime ascribing to the intense thermal effect of Al-CuO reaction. The size and spatial distribution of Al 2 O 3 were emphasized to address their contribution to the high mechanical performance of the composite, which exhibits a tensile strength of ~481 MPa and fracture elongation of ~16.8 %. Meanwhile, the toughening mechanism of present Al-CuO composite was rationalized on basis of the "dislocation punched zone" and "plastic zone" affected by Al 2 O 3 . Both the theoretical analysis and fracture morphology support a reinforcements-matrix interface failure mechanism and the non-uniform distribution of Al 2 O 3 consisting alternant "rich/poor zones" can markedly contribute to the high toughness. The present findings may provide a promising strategy to achieve an intragranular distribution of nano-sized reinforcements in Al-metal oxides composites, which enables increasing strength and ductility of the metal matrix.

The exploration of advanced water treatment technologies e.g. heterogeneous photocatalysis is the most promising way to address organic pollution issues. Semiconductors based bimetallic photocatalysis with wide bandgap, have displayed splendid degradation performance in the UV light region, but their extension to the visible light/near infra-red region is still a matter of great concern. CuO, Co(OH) 2 , CoO and Co(OH) 2 /CuO nanocomposites were synthesized via simple co-precipitation method and further practiced for Rhodamine B (RhB) decomposition by introducing per-sulfate (PS) as a sacrificial agent. Results revealed that Co(OH) 2 /CuO catalyst had shown robust catalytic activity for RhB photodegradation (degradation time 8 min, k = 0.864 min −1 ) under light illumination, significantly less (12–60 times) than the other reported bimetallic catalysts. Catalyst also have verified excellent performance for a broader pH range (5–9) with excellent stability. Main reactive species responsible for the photocatalytic reaction were sulfate (SO 4 •− ) and superoxide (O 2 • ) radicals, duly verified by ESR and by using radical scavengers. With outstanding recycling abilities, this is probably the fewer successful attempt for RhB decolorization and can be highly favorable for effluent treatment by using the synergic effect of absorption and photodegradation.

Microfiltration exhibits advantage in wastewater treatment because of its higher permeability than ultrafiltration , nanofiltration and reverse osmosis . However, pollutants smaller than the membrane pores are difficult to be separated, resulting in a low removal efficiency. In this work, we fabricate a CuO/carbon membrane for small-sized organic pollutants removal by introducing electrocatalytic oxidation to microfiltration. In order to improve the electrocatalytic performance of membrane, a facile dynamic electrodeposition method is developed, by which CuO electrocatalysts are uniformly deposited on both the surface and pore walls of a coal-based carbon membrane. The prepared dynamic electrodeposited CuO/carbon membrane (DECuO/CM) has superior removal ability over the original carbon membrane (CM) and the conventional electrodeposited CuO/carbon membrane (CECuO/CM). The Rhodamine B (RhB), COD and TOC removal efficiencies of the DECuO/CM reach 99.96%, 71.82% and 64.29%, respectively, which are about 18.7-20.1 and 1.5-1.8 times higher than that of the CM and the CECuO/CM. Meanwhile, DECuO/CM shows higher permeability (823.03 L/(m 2 h bar)) over CM (637.99 L/(m 2 h bar)) and CECuO/CM (706.27 L/(m 2 h bar)). Moreover, DECuO/CM has good sustainability because the RhB removal efficiency maintains above 93% after 5 repeated tests. The extensive applicability of the DECuO/CM is also proved with high removal efficiencies (all above 96%) when treating other three typical small-sized organic pollutants (phenol, bisphenol A and amoxicillin), respectively. Thus, the prepared DECuO/CM shows great potential for small-sized organic pollutants removal with both high permeability and removal efficiency. The dynamic electrodeposition is a promising approach to prepare high-performance electrocatalytic membranes for wastewater treatment.

Multiple heterojunction made of CuO nanocrystals building on ZnO scaffold buffered by an In 2 O 3 interlayer is fabricated through simple wet chemistry. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy reveal this CuO/In 2 O 3 /ZnO heterojunction forming multi-core-shell nanostructure. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is performed to analyze the chemical compositions. Such system is further employed in sunlight-driven photoelectrochemical water splitting, wherein Mott-Schottky analysis demonstrates its flat-band potential negatively shifted. This originates from the lower electron affinity of CuO compared to that of ZnO, favoring photocurrent generation at early onset potential. More importantly, the entire gamut of visible-light is harnessed by CuO, as manifested in the photocurrent action spectrum. Last but not least, the charge-separation is promoted at the In 2 O 3 interface, as reflected in the impedance measurement. The synergistic effect endows the CuO/In 2 O 3 /ZnO photoelectrode with the highest photocurrent of 1.22 mA⋅cm −2 (at ∼1.6 V vs. RHE) that outperforms those of the CuO/ZnO and ZnO photoanodes, respectively.

Herein, hollow porous CuO–CuCo2O4 dodecahedrons are synthesized by using a simple self-sacrificial metal–organic framework (MOF) template, which resulted in dodecahedron morphology with hierarchically porous architecture. When evaluated as a cathodic electrocatalyst in lithium–oxygen batteries, the CuO–CuCo2O4 composite exhibits a significantly enhanced electrochemical performance, delivering an initial capacity of 6844 mA h g−1 with a remarkably decreased discharge/charge overpotential to 1.15 V (vs. Li/Li+) at a current density of 100 mA g−1 and showing excellent cyclic stability up to 111 charge/discharge cycles under a cut-off capacity of 1000 mA h g−1 at 400 mA g−1. The outstanding electrochemical performance of CuO–CuCo2O4 composite can be owing to the intrinsic catalytic activity, unique porous structure and the presence of substantial electrocatalytic sites. The ex situ XRD and SEM are also carried out to reveal the charge/discharge behavior and demonstrate the excellent reversibility of the CuO–CuCo2O4 based electrode.

In the present work, we synthesized CuO-ZnO (CZ) nanocomposites using a bio-templated method from biowaste-eggshell membranes (ESM). Results showed that CZ-ESM nanocomposites of morphology and structure preserved the original structural characteristics of ESM with interlaced network coated by small inorganic nanoparticles. In addition, the samples exhibit excellent adsorption, catalysis and antibacterial activities. Experimental results showed the adsorption kinetics and isotherm were well described by pseudo-second order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm model for Congo red dye, the maximum adsorption capacity was determined to be 775 mg•g −1 . The catalysis reduction efficiency of CZ-ESM nanocomposites for 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) reached 98% after 12 min at room temperature. CZ-ESM could be recycled several times without any significant activity loss. Furthermore, the results of antibacterial experiments indicated that CZ-ESM nanocomposites exhibited a strong inhibition activity against E. coli and S. aureus . The maximum diameter of the inhibition zone was 27.5 mm for S. aureus and 20.3 mm for E. coli .

A photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor was constructed for the detection of non-electroactive malathion. It is based on the use of a hierarchical CuO material derived from a Cu-BTC metal-organic framework (where BTC stands for benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid). The modified CuO was obtained by calcination of Cu-BTC at a high temperature (300 °C) and possesses a high photocurrent conversion efficiency. Under irradiation with visible light and in the presence of malathion, the formation of the CuO-malathion complex on the CuO gave rise to an increase in steric hindrance. This results in a decrease in photocurrent. This novel PEC detection method has a lower detection limit of 8.6 × 10 −11 mol L −1 and a wide linear range (1.0 × 10 −10 ~ 1.0 × 10 −5 mol L −1 ).

A general method for the preparation of Pt doped CuO/Pt nanoflowers (CuO/Pt NFs) for peroxidase mimicking has been demonstrated via hydrothermal method . Pt ions could be reduced to Pt nanoparticles by using the ascorbic acid (AA) as reducing agent and Pt ions were uniformly doped in the CuO nanoflowers by using the bovine serum albumin (BSA) as the stabilizer . The obtained CuO/Pt NFs exhibited a higher peroxidase-like catalytic activity than individual CuO and Pt nanoparticles alone, which could be ascribed to their synergistic effect. In the presence of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), the CuO/Pt NFs could catalyze the oxidation of chromogen 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to a blue color product. The peroxidase activity of CuO/Pt NFs was selectively inhibited by Hg 2+ due to form the CuO/Pt-Hg trimetallic amalgam . However, the inhibition was not affected by other metal ions . Therefore, a novel colorimetric biosensor was developed for sensitive detection of mercuric ions by using CuO/Pt NFs. This method exhibited a wide response linear range, low limit of quantification values, excellent sensitivity and selectivity for detection of Hg 2+ in various ground water samples, which was verified with CVAAS. With the advantages of rapid response, simple operation, naked-eye observation and low cost, the colorimetric CuO/Pt NFs sensor showed bright prospects for detection of Hg 2+ in various water samples and public drinking water distribution systems .

Herein, CuO/Bi2MoO6 hybrid nanosheets were prepared as a surface multifunctional photocatalyst for gas-phase toluene oxidation with high conversion (>99%). Aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy suggested that CuO species were highly dispersed on the nanosheets. X-ray absorption fine structure spectra indicated that the distorted and stretched Cu–O coordination structures in CuO/Bi2MoO6 nanosheets would provide open active sites. In situ Fourier transform infrared and density functional theory results showed that toluene molecules could be chemisorbed and activated on the active sites of CuO/Bi2MoO6 nanosheets by the C–H group forming CuO/Bi2MoO6···Ph-CH3 surface complex compounds. These would induce electron–hole transfer and initiate photocatalytic reactions under visible light irradiation. The corresponding intermediates of benzaldehyde and benzoic acid would be detected by in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy. Furthermore, the synergistic effect of CuO and Bi2MoO6 nanosheets could monitor charge dynamics to facilitate their respective transmission from photoexcitation sites to active centers. This work provides new insights into the essence of visible-light-driven surface photocatalysis and is expected to promote the design of novel and more effective photocatalysts at the molecular level.

Graphical Stuck in the middle : A series of copper-modified ceria catalysts has been synthesized in a facile way. (CuO) x /Ce 0.9 Cu 0.1 O 2 showed excellent catalytic activity in CO low-temperature oxidation. The combined contribution of the synergistic effect and surface defects facilitates the CO oxidation at the interface between ceria and copper species (see scheme). Copper-modified ceria catalysts, (CuO) x /Ce 0.9 Cu 0.1 O 2 nanospheres, for low-temperature CO oxidation were fabricated simply by using the hydrothermal synthesis of Cu-doped CeO 2 (Ce 0.9 Cu 0.1 O 2 ) nanospheres followed by deposition of CuO over Ce 0.9 Cu 0.1 O 2 . The X-ray diffraction and electron spectroscopy characterizations demonstrated that the as-prepared nanospheres were composed of cubic CeO 2 and monoclinic CuO with a typical diameter of around 70 nm. Moreover, the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis illustrated the coexistence of Ce 4+ /Ce 3+ and Cu 2+ /Cu + redox couples in (CuO) x /Ce 0.9 Cu 0.1 O 2 and H 2 temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) measurements indicated the excellent reduction behavior of the catalyst. The Raman spectra illustrated the oxygen vacancy in (CuO) 0.3 /Ce 0.9 Cu 0.1 O 2 , and diffuse-reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) demonstrated the stable existence of Cu + species during CO oxidation. The (CuO) x /Ce 0.9 Cu 0.1 O 2 nanospheres showed excellent catalytic activity toward CO oxidation in normal feed gas (volume ratio of CO/O 2 /N 2 =1:10:89) at ambient temperature. Catalytic tests revealed that the proportion of CuO in the final product has a strong influence on the resultant catalytic activities. The (CuO) x /Ce 0.9 Cu 0.1 O 2 nanospheres hold great application potential as new catalysts for CO oxidation.

The porous copper oxide (CuO)/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composite was synthesized by a facile hydrothermal procedure using urea as a foaming agent. The CuO nanorods possessed vermicular pore channel with diameter of 4 nm and aspect ratio of 5:1, and were homogeneously grown on the surface of rGO sheets. The vermicular pore channel offered more sites for the storage and insertion of Li ions , as well as accelerated electrolyte diffusion and Li-ion transport. The electrochemical properties of the CuO/rGO nanocomposite as the anode material for lithium-ion battery were studied. It is found that the as-synthesized CuO/rGO nanocomposite showed an initial reversible capacity of 819 mA h/g and the specific capacity of 480 mA h/g after 50 cycles at a current density of 70 mA/g, which is due to the unique porous structure of CuO with high surface area and the presence of rGO that could improve lithium-ion mobility, shorten the distance for Li + diffusion, facilitate the transport of electrons and accommodate the large volume changes. With these outstanding performance, the CuO/rGO nanocomposite hold great promise as an advanced anode material for lithium-ion batteries.
