Effects of Heat Treatment and Yb 3+ Concentration on the Downconversion Emission of Er 3+ /Yb 3+ Co-Doped Transparent Silicate Glass-Ceramics

Dan Ho Kim,Tap Tran Duy,Nguyen-Truong Hieu,Ty Nguyen Minh,Zhou Dacheng,Qiu Jianbei

The SiO2-Al2O3-BaF2-TiO2-CaF2 transparent silicate glass-ceramics containing BaF2 nanocrystals were successfully prepared by heat treatment process through conventional melting method. Effects of heat treatment processes and Yb3+ concentration on the downconversion (DC) emission of the co-doped Er3+/Yb3+ transparent silicate glass-ceramics were investigated. With the increase of temperatures and times of heat treatment process, the DC emission intensity of the co-doped Er3+/Yb3+ glass-ceramics was significantly enhanced. At the same time, with the increase of Yb3+ concentration, the value of DC intensity of Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped bands centered at 849, 883 and 1533 nm is maximized when the concentration of Yb3+ reaches 2.5 mol.%. When the concentration exceed 2.5 mol. %, the DC emission intensity of Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped bands centered at 849, 883 and 1533 nm was decreased, owing to the self-quenching effect. It’s interesting that the DC emission intensity of Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped band centered at 978 nm didn’t quench when the Yb3+ concentration exceed 2.5 mol. %. At the same time, the DC mechanism and ET processes between Yb3+ and Er3+ ions were discussed.

A ratiometric fluorescence probe for melamine detection based on luminescence resonance energy transfer between the NaYF4:Yb, Er upconversion nanoparticles and gold nanoparticles

Huanxian Shi,Qiqi Nie,Min Yang,Cunjin Wang,Enzhou Liu,Zhen Ji,Jun Fan

In this paper, a novel ratiometric fluorescence probe for melamine detection based on luminescence resonance energy transfer (LRET) between the NaYF 4 :Yb, Er upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) was developed. The detection mechanism could be interpreted to the AuNPs quenched the fluorescence intensity (F 542 and F 654 ) of the UCNPs under 980 nm excitation. after melamine addition, the fluorescence intensity of the UCNPs was recovered due to the aggregation of Au NPs. A good linear relationship between the ratio of F 542 to F 654 nm (F 542 /F 654 ) was obtained in ranges of 20-200 μg/L of the melamine concentration and the limit of detection was 8.8 nM. Besides, The probe exhibited an excellent selectivity and good sensitivity to melamine, and achieved the melamine detection in real sample. This work paved a new avenue for the potential practice application for commercial instantaneous determination of the melamine.

Caragana sinica (Buc'hoz) Rehd. (jin ji er) polysaccharide regulates the immune function and intestinal microbiota of cyclophosphamide (CTX) induced immunosuppressed mice

Yan Zhang,Qirui Xu,Yazi Wang,Chenchen Zhang,Shan Xu,Manhong Luo,Shuhan Yang

s Ethnopharmacological relevance Caragana sinica (Buc'hoz) Rehd. is a plant widely grown in Yunnan, China, for both medicinal and edible purposes. The “National Compilation of Chinese Herbal Medicine” describes its nature as “slightly temperate and sweet”. Caragana sinica is usually medicated with whole herbs, the main function is to replenish the kidneys and stop bleeding. Caragana sinica was used in folk medicine in Chuxiong, Yunnan, to treat deficiency colds, fatigue, fever, cough, hypertension, and other diseases. Aim of the study This article investigates the structural characteristics of Caragana sinica polysaccharide (CSP) and explores its immune-regulatory activity and molecular biological mechanisms in cyclophosphamide-induced immunosuppressed mice, as well as its effects on intestinal bacteria. Methods With the water-extraction and alcohol-precipitation method, Caragana sinica polysaccharide were extracted, obtaining CSP by purification. A variety of methods and techniques have been used to analyze the chemical properties and structural characteristics of CSP. Immunosuppressive mice model was established through intraperitoneal injection of cyclophosphamide (CTX) to study the immune-regulatory effects and mechanisms of CSP. Results The data indicated that CSP is a neutral heteropolysaccharide mainly composed of arabinose and galactose. This article uses immunosuppressive mice induced by cyclophosphamide (CTX) as the model. The results showed that CSP can promote the immune function of CTX treated immunosuppressed mice and regulate the diversity and composition of intestinal microbiota. CSP can increase macrophage phagocytosis, NK cell killing activity, and lymphocyte proliferation activity. It can also repair the index and morphological damage of the thymus and spleen. And by binding to the TLR4 receptor, MyD88 was activated and interacted with TRAF6 to promote the transfer of NF-κB into the nucleus. Thereby promoting cytokine release and increasing the production of IL-1β, IL-6, IL-10, TNF-α, IgA, and IgG in the serum. CSP also effectively alleviated the liver damage caused by CTX through antioxidant activity. Furthermore, CSP can dramatically affect the intestinal microbiota and the body's immunity by boosting the relative presence of Bacteroides and Verrucamicrobiota . Conclusions Research results indicated that CSP can regulate the immune function of mice, providing a basis for developing CSP as a potential immune modulator and functional food.

Yb3+/Ln3+/Mn4+ (Ln = Er, Ho, and Tm) doped Na3ZrF7 phosphors: oil–water interface cation exchange synthesis, dual-modal luminescence and anti-counterfeiting

Daqin Chen,Yue Liu,Jiangkun Chen,Hai Huang,Jiasong Zhong,Yiwen Zhu

Efficient dual-modal luminescence is highly desired for applications in high security anti-counterfeiting. In the present work, Yb3+/Ln3+/Mn4+ (Ln = Er, Ho, and Tm) tri-doped Na3ZrF7 phosphors were fabricated via oil–water interface cation exchange using Yb3+/Ln3+:Na3ZrF7 as the exchanging hosts. The as-prepared products exhibited typical Mn4+ red down-shifting luminescence under UV light excitation and Er3+ red, Ho3+ yellow and Tm3+ near-infrared multi-color upconversion emissions under 980 nm laser excitation. The Mn4+ dopants in the Na3ZrF7 host experienced strong crystal-field strength Dq of 3.63 and showed superior thermal stability with up to 90% of the initial emission intensity retained at 448 K. Steady-state and time-resolved emission spectra verified that there was no detrimental energy transfer interaction between Mn4+ and Ln3+, enabling bright and eye-visible bi-functional emissions for the present products. As a consequence, the as-prepared phosphors were demonstrated to be applicable in anti-counterfeiting by a proof of concept experiment of fluorescent labeling for specially designed patterns.

Surfaces modification of MAPbI3 films with hydrophobic β-NaYF4:Yb,Er up-conversion ultrathin layers for improving the performance of perovskite solar cells

Lele Qiu,Yulin Yang,Guohua Dong,Debin Xia,Mengru Li,Xiao Fan,Ruiqing Fan

As for the solution-processed MAPbI 3 film, the pinholes and gaps are an inevitable and undesirable phenomenon, which can usually lead to serious interface charge recombination due to the penetration of hole transport materials in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, a hydrophobic β-NaYF 4 :Yb,Er up-conversion ultrathin layer with particle size ca. 6 nm was first applied to modify the MAPbI 3 film for optimizing the surface of perovskite film. Thereby, the corresponding PSCs yield a significantly enhanced power conversion efficiency of 15.17% compared with that (13.32%) of the pristine PSCs. Furthermore, the PSCs also have a good stability in air atmosphere (relative humidity ≤45%) because of the introduction of this hydrophobic material. After a series of detailed investigations and comparison, it can be easily concluded that the filled pinholes and gaps in perovskite films via β-NaYF 4 :Yb,Er nanoparticles is the main reason for the performance enhancement of the β-NaYF 4 :Yb,Er based PSCs, which can result in an enhanced hole extraction efficiency and reduced interface charge recombination. As a conclusion, it is a feasible and effective approach for improving the photovoltaic performance of PSCs by filling up the pinholes and gaps in perovskite films with up-conversion ultrathin layers.

β-NaGdF4:Yb,Er@CdS/MWCNTs photocatalysts with efficient interfacial energy migration for full-spectrum light-driven antibiotic degradation: Construction and DFT insight

Guangdong Wu,Juanqin Xue,Dashi Lei,Yanyan Zhou,Zhaoyuan Cao,Kang Ren,Qiang Bi,Zhihua Leng

Currently, upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) based photocatalysts have been extensively developed to improve solar energy utilization. However, the mechanisms underlying interfacial energy migration of upconversion photocatalyst remain unclear. Herein, a promising composite photocatalyst with complementary properties is designed by integrating β -NaGdF 4 :Yb 3+ /Er 3+ (NGFYE), CdS and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The morphology, structure and chemical properties of NGFYE@CdS/MWCNTs ternary photocatalyst are characterized. In addition, the existence of Förster resonance energy transfer process in NGFYE@CdS/MWCNTs photocatalysts, i.e., the migration of excitation energy from Er 3+ − 4 S 3/2 excitation level and higher excitation level (e.g., Er 3+ − 2 H 11/2 ) to CdS nanoparticles, was further confirmed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The optimized NGFYE@CdS/MWCNTs photocatalyst presents 71.65 % and 35.29 % degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) under λ ≥ 800 nm irradiation for 3 h, respectively. This work not only illustrates the interfacial energy migration mechanism between NGFYE and CdS, but also provides insights for the rapid construction of heterojunction materials with efficient energy transfer interfaces.

Pyrochlore-structured high-entropy rare-earth zirconates (La0.2Nd0.2Sm0.2Eu0.2A0.2)2Zr2O7 (A = Dy, Ho, or Er): Promising NTC thermistor ceramics for ultra-high temperature sensing

Yian Chen,Tingting Xuan,Xiaohui Li,Ting Liu,Bo Wu,Yuling Tuo,Xiaoyi Chen,Bo Gao

In this study, a series of high-entropy rare-earth zirconate (La 0.2 Nd 0.2 Sm 0.2 Eu 0.2 A 0.2 ) 2 Zr 2 O 7 (A = Dy, Ho, or Er) ceramics containing five principal elements were synthesized via the high-temperature solid-state method, and their potential as high-temperature thermosensitive ceramics was investigated. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy confirmed the single-phase pyrochlore structural characteristics of these ceramics, while scanning electron microscopy revealed a dense microstructure. Electrical measurements demonstrated that these ceramics are capable of operating at temperatures up to 1500 °C and exhibiting exceptional sensitivity within the 400–1500 °C range, both of which are attributed to their high resistivity at elevated temperatures and a large material constant B value (≥11,241 K) across the entire operating temperature span. Notably, (La 0.2 Nd 0.2 Sm 0.2 Eu 0.2 A 0.2 ) 2 Zr 2 O 7 (A = Dy, Ho, or Er) ceramics also maintained a resistivity drift rate of ≤0.53 % after 500 h of continuous exposure at 1500 °C, a result ascribed to the high-entropy effect suppressing lattice distortion, as evidenced by ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. These findings validate the high-entropy strategy as a promising approach for developing durable, high-performance NTC thermistors for extreme-temperature applications.

Qiang Zhao,Su-Juan Jin,Zhi Shen,Guo Zang,Wen-Jun Lv

In order to further enrich the research on the synthesis of complexes with polycarboxylic acid ligands and rare earth metal ion. In this study, four rare earth complexes, namely, [Gd(cpia)] n ( 1 ), [Er(cpia)] n ( 2 ), [Pr(cpna) 2 ·2H 2 O] n ( 3 ) and [Gd(Hcpna)(cpna)•3H 2 O] n ( 4 ) have been synthesized by solvothermal method based on 5-(2-carboxyphenoxy)isophthalic acid (H 3 cpia) and 5-(4-carboxyphenoxy)nicotinic acid ligand (H 2 cpna) with rare earth metal ions Pr 3+ , Gd 3+ and Er 3+ . Single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses reveal that complexes 1 , 2 and 3 are two-dimensional network structure, 4 is one-dimensional chain structures. The fluorescence test results show that the fluorescence intensity of complexes 1 and 2 were lower than that of the H 3 cpia ligand, the fluorescence intensity of complexes 3 and 4 were lower than that of the H 2 cpna ligand. Magnetic results indicate complex 1 has ferromagentic behavior and weak antiferromagentic behavior in the complexes 2, 3 and 4 .

Differential regulation of red-emission intensity and red-to-green emission ratio in multilayer Er-rich core–shell nanoparticles via Yb3+ or Tm3+ doping

Wei Gao,Jiaxi Li,Junlin Qi,Qingyan Han,Chengyun Zhang,Xuewen Yan,Jun Dong

Balancing red-emission intensity and the red-to-green (R/G) emission ratio remains an important challenge in Er 3+ -based upconversion nanoparticles. Herein, a multilayer core–shell architecture was developed to achieve differential regulation of red-emission intensity and the red-to-green (R/G) emission ratio in Er 3+ -based upconversion nanoparticles. After screening NaYbF 4 : x %Er 3+ @NaYF 4 core–shell nanoparticles, the sample containing 2% Er 3+ exhibited a favorable balance between overall emission intensity and the R/G ratio and was therefore selected as the precursor for constructing NaYbF 4 :2%Er 3+ @NaYF 4 @NaErF 4 :y%M 3+ @NaYF 4 (M = Yb or Tm) multilayer nanoparticles. In this architecture, the Yb-rich core, intermediate NaYF 4 layer, compositionally tunable Er-rich shell, and outer NaYF 4 shell were designed to provide spatially differentiated excitation harvesting, interfacial modulation, spectral regulation, and surface passivation, respectively. Under identical 980 nm excitation and collection conditions, incorporation of 15%Yb 3+ into the Er-rich shell increased the integrated red-emission intensity to 2.40 times that of the undoped multilayer counterpart, whereas incorporation of 0.5%Tm 3+ produced the highest R/G ratio of 17.1 while retaining comparatively strong emission. Power-dependent and time-resolved luminescence measurements, together with the proposed energy-transfer model, indicate that Yb 3+ incorporation is predominantly associated with enhanced local excitation sensitization and energy utilization within the Er-rich region, whereas trace Tm 3+ incorporation is more closely associated with excited-state population redistribution toward the red-emitting pathway. These results demonstrate that red-emission intensity and the R/G ratio can be differentially regulated within the same multilayer platform through Yb 3+ or Tm 3+ incorporation into the Er-rich shell. This work provides a spatially organized and compositionally tunable strategy for tailoring red upconversion emission in Er 3+ -based multilayer nanoparticles.

Dual-modal immunoassay for prostate cancer-derived exosomes enabled by a black phosphorus/silver SERS substrate and Yb/Er co-doped NaGdF4 UCL nanoprobes

Yasheng Dai,Jie Yao,Shiyuan Wang,Changgan Lai,Jie Gong,Chenjie Gu,Tao Jiang,Kerong Wu

Exosomes are regarded as cancer-associated biomarkers for early diagnosis and prognosis in clinical bioassays. Nevertheless, it remains a challenge to develop an approach that can achieve ultra-sensitive and quantitative detection of exosomes. Herein, an innovative dual-mode immunoassay dependent on surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and upconversion luminescence (UCL) was developed to detect prostate cancer-derived exosomes. A novel SERS-active immunosubstrate was constructed by combining black phosphorus (BP) with Ag nanoparticles, which exhibited an enhancement factor (EF) of about 3.69 × 10 9 , due to the synergistic electromagnetic and chemical effects. Meanwhile, an immunoprobe with stable and visually distinguishable UCL was developed based on Yb/Er co-doped NaGdF 4 nanoparticles with an intrinsic two-photon process. The specific capture of exosomes was achieved through antigen-antibody binding within the sandwich immunostructure, achieving limits of detection (LOD) as low as 93 and 172 particles/mL based on the dual-modal detection, respectively. Furthermore, the recognition of different derived exosomes was simply realized by visually observing the green fluorescence with different intensities, which paves the way for efficient preliminary identification of prostate cancer. Finally, the validation with clinical serum samples proved that the proposed approach holds significant promise for rapid cancer screening and diagnosis.

A light-triggered self-reinforced nanoagent for targeted chemo-photodynamic therapy of breast cancer bone metastases via ER stress and mitochondria mediated apoptotic pathways

Yanjuan Huang,Zhanghong Xiao,Zilin Guan,Yifeng Shen,Yali Jiang,Xiaoyu Xu,Zeqian Huang,Chunshun Zhao

Current therapeutic strategies for the treatment of bone metastases are often limited by the lack of selectivity, severe systemic toxicity and suboptimal efficacy. Nanomedicine meditated chemo-photodynamic therapy provides a promising therapeutic opportunity for enhanced cancer therapy. Herein, we constructed an alendronate (ALN)-functionalized bone-seeking nanoagent ( [email protected] ) to co-deliver the proteasome inhibitor bortezomib (BTZ) and the photosensitizer Zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc) for synergistic chemo-photodynamic therapy of bone metastases. Results showed that [email protected] possessed favorable bone affinity both in vitro and in vivo and could release drug in a pH-responsive manner. Under irradiation, [email protected] could generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) to cause mitochondrial damage, and increase the cytosolic Ca 2+ levels and the expression of GRP78 protein to induce excessive endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, thereby synergistically inhibiting cell proliferation . More importantly, [email protected] could prolong blood circulation time and preferentially navigate to the bone affected site. As a result, tumor growth was significantly inhibited by bone targeted chemo-photodynamic therapy, with tumor volume cut down by 85% compared with PBS group and bone remained undamaged. Besides, the systemic toxicity of BTZ was significantly reduced. Therefore, the versatile nanoagent is expected to be a promising nanoplatform to concern multiple intracellular stress for remarkable synergistic chemo-photodynamic therapy of bone metastases.

A novel M2Ga2GeO7:N3+ (M = Ca, Ba, Sr; N = Cr, Nd, Er) sub-micron phosphor with multiband NIR emissions: preparation, structure, properties, and LEDs

Zhihua Li,Xin Ding,Bing Yu,Yu Min,Bin He,Youqing Shen,Hailin Cong

Near-infrared (NIR) emission materials can be widely applied in various fields, such as food detection, imaging, treatment, electronic products. With the trend of miniaturization of equipment, smaller materials are needed. In this work, we successfully synthesized a series of M2Ga2GeO7:N3+ (M = Ca, Ba, Sr; N = Cr, Nd, Er) samples and then focused on the study of Nd3+ doped Sr2Ga2GeO7 (SGGO). A series of SGGO:xNd3+ sub-micron phosphors were prepared via a microwave-assisted sol–gel process combined with subsequent calcination at 750 ℃, and the structural information and luminescent properties were systematically studied. SGGO is a representative tetragonal crystal and belonging to the space group of P4¯21m (113). The Nd3+ ions occupy eight-coordinated Sr2+ sites in the crystal lattice. From SEM analysis, the average particle size distribution is 219.7 ± 41.4 nm. The sub-micron phosphors have rich excitation spectra ranging from 350 nm to 850 nm and can produce multiband NIR emissions of 1331, 1056, and 905 nm when excited by ultraviolet and NIR light. The maximum emission intensity was obtained by optimizing the doping ratio of Nd3+ ions. A commercial chip was then utilized to fabricate light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to verify its application potential in NIR-II mini-LEDs. Compared with blue light LEDs, the as-prepared LEDs had good imaging penetration depth and could be clearly observed under 10 mm of chicken breast coverage. The maximum imaging penetration depth can be 33 mm.
