Selective photoluminescence enhancement of red emitted surface modified poly(p-phenylenediamine) dots: An ultra-sensitive anion photoluminescence sensor for F− in vitro

Ye Wang,Yiwen Huang,Feiyu Wang,Jingjing Zhao,Yiming Zhang

The weak interactions between anions and common functional groups make it difficult for the development of anion photoluminescence sensors. In this work, we report an ultra-sensitive anion photoluminescence (PL) sensor for F − based on triethylene glycol monomethyl ether modified poly(p-phenylenediamine) dots (TPPDs). Due to the PET process in excited TPPDs, no obvious PL behavior can be observed in TPPDs. Due to the fast photoinduced electron transfer (PET) process in excited TPPDs, no obvious photoluminescence behavior can be observed: however, the PET process can be cut off in the presence of F − and TPPDs show bright red PL. The detection limit of this system is 2 × 10 −10 M, which is much lower than most other reported detection methods. Compared with traditional “ON-OFF” PL sensors, such an “OFF-ON” PL detection system shows higher value in practical applications. The detection system exhibits superior photostability and high selectivity for F − . We also demonstrate the successful F − detection in vitro based on TPPDs.

Construction of a novel Eu-MOF material based on different detection mechanisms and its application in sensing pollutants aniline, F- and Hg2+

Wenqing Li,Jingyue Zhang,Linhan Fan,Yun Zhao,Changyan Sun,Wenjun Li,Zhidong Chang

Aniline is an organic pollutant with carcinogenicity and teratogenicity, while F - and Hg 2+ are toxic ions that are easily soluble in water. When they are released to the environment, they will pose a threat to human health. Designing a material that can simultaneously detect three types of pollutants is of great significance. In this paper, a novel rare earth metal organic framework material (Eu-MOF) with three-dimensional structure based on 1-methylimidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid was synthesized for the first time through solvent thermal method. It has excellent luminescent performance and can be used as a multifunctional fluorescent probe to detect aniline, F - , and Hg 2+ based on photoinduced electron transfer, energy competitive absorption, and ion exchange mechanisms, with detection limits of 1.79 × 10 -8 , 8.13 × 10 -8 , and 8.83 × 10 -7 M, respectively. It is worth noting that Eu-MOF can detect F - and Hg 2+ in real water samples, such as lake water and green tea water, with favorable recovery rates.

Fabrication of molecularly imprinted polymers based on magnetic covalent organic framework for highly selective and sensitive analysis of genistein in F. Philippinensis

Yu-Zhen Zhang,Yi-Le Li,Zhi Jin,Mao-Fang He,Yi-Mei Tang,Jian Zhang,Bo Zhang

Flemingia philippinensis Merr.et Rolfe ( F. philippinensis ) is an important food ingredient as well as a traditional Chinese medicine with numerous pharmacological actions. Unfortunately, there was no defined method for monitoring the quality of F. philippinensis in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia. In this study, a magnetic covalent organic framework molecularly imprinted polymers (MCOFs-MIPs) was prepared using MCOFs as a support material, genistein (Gen), which was abundant in F. philippinensis , as a template molecule, and acrylamide as a functional monomer. The preparation process of MCOFs-MIPs was optimized and their structures and adsorption characteristics were characterized. In the selectivity test, the imprinting factor of Gen was 1.93, demonstrating that the imprinting effect of MCOFs-MIPs could selectively enrich Gen in complex samples. Following that, a new and effective quality control method (Gen-MCOFs-MIPs-HPLC) was established to determine Gen content in F. philippinensis roots. The method showed good linearity (R 2  = 0.9936) in the range of 0.12–80 µg mL −1 . The recoveries of Gen in F. philippinensis high, medium and low samples were 90.5–91.0 %, 92.1–100.1 and 92.8–100.8, respectively. Stability and reproducibility tests revealed that this method was stable (RSD of 1.20 %) and reproducible (RSD of 0.70 %). Moreover, the calculation showed that the amount of Gen in the F. philippinensis powder was 0.4489 mg g −1 . As a result, the approach was shown to be simple, repeatable, and stable, and it provided a sensitive and reliable method for the extraction and detection of Gen in natural products.

N/F/S co-doped 3D interconnected carbon nanosheets with well-developed pores and interlayer spacing for high-performance potassium ion batteries

Jun He,Haoran Qian,Guodong Peng,Hongyu Hu,Li Jiang,Xiaojun He

It is a big challenge to tune the structure and composition of carbon-based anode materials to increase the active sites by a green synthesis strategy for potassium ion batteries (PIBs). Herein, the N/F/S co-doped three-dimensional (3D) interconnected carbon nanosheets (NFS-CNSs) were synthesized from coal tar pitch (CTP) through a green and low-temperature treatment process for the first time. The as-obtained NFS-CNS 600 features 3D interconnected ultra-thin carbon nanosheets with abundant active sites, tunable N/F/S species, and enlarged carbon interlayer spacing. The density functional theory calculation results demonstrate that NFS-CNSs exhibit the highest electron density and most negative K + adsorption energy (–0.59 eV) compared to single or double-atom doping, thereby enhancing the storage performance of K + . As an anode for PIBs, the NFS-CNS 600 exhibits good cycle stability (98.2 % capacity retention after 200 cycles at 0.2 A g −1 ), high capacity (409.1 mAh g −1 at 0.05 A g −1 ) and rate performance (179.5 mAh g −1 at 5 A g −1 ). Besides, the NFS-CNS 600 anode also displays outstanding sodium storage performance. This work offers a green strategy to synthesize CTP-based anode materials from coal chemical by-products for high-performance PIBs.

A portable smartphone platform with FeNPs@g-C3N4 nano-enzyme for visual and on-site sensing of F− and Al3+ in tea

Yanyang Wang,Shanshan Gao,Gege Yang,Wenyi Zhu,Ying Lu,Mengyuan Tan,Yuancheng Peng,Hua Yang,Chunxia Song

A portable platform for the visual determination of F− and Al3+ was developed by combining FeNPs@g-C3N4 nano-enzyme and a smartphone. The FeNPs@g-C3N4 nano-enzyme with excellent peroxidase activity was synthesized through the in situ growth of Fe nanoparticles (FeNPs) on graphite-phase carbon nitride nanosheets (g-C3N4), which could catalyze H2O2 to oxidize TMB to blue oxide (oxTMB). The peroxidase activity of the FeNPs@g-C3N4 nano-enzyme could be inhibited by F−, and then restored by Al3+ because of the coordination reaction between Fe3+/Al3+ and F−. Furthermore, the solution color could be dynamically manipulated by changing the concentrations of F− and Al3+. Under optimal conditions, the developed method gave low detection limits of 2.43 nM for F− and 7.66 μM for Al3+. The cooperation of nano-enzyme and smartphone has greatly shortened the detection time and reduced the cost of detection, providing a new strategy for the on-site and convenient detection of F− and Al3+ in tea, and showed significant application potential in food safety evaluation.

Visible-light-driven F/C co-doping g-C3N4 nanosheets for efficient hydrogen evolution: Charge redistribution on C4 delocalized large π bond

Decai Yang,Qing Ye,Chao Qu,Fanwei Meng,Lanyang Wang,Yongqi Li

Developing photocatalytic hydrogen evolution technology based on graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 , CN) has emerged as a potential solution for the future energy shortage in recent years. Herein, carbon (C) and fluorine (F) co-doping graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets (CFCN) were synthesized via a one-pot co-thermal method without introducing any metal element. Exceptional hydrogen production activity (3.87 mmol/h/g) was achieved by CFCN under visible light irradiation, which was 4.2-fold increase compared to the pristine CN. It could be attributed to the large specific surface area (51.59 m 2 /g) and efficient mass transfer facilitated by the porous sheet-like morphology of CFCN. Additionally, the modification of the band structure and internal charge redistribution were investigated via density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which confirmed there was a unidirectional and fast electron transfer channel from N through the C 4 delocalized large π bond to F. This creative research uncovered the pivotal role of F/C co-doping in enhancing photocatalytic hydrogen evolution efficacy, offering cutting-edge insights into the design of sustainable and eco-friendly photocatalysts based on metal-free CN.

Sequential adsorption- dehalogenation removal of PFOA and 2,4,6-TCP with F-CTF as the adsorbent and hydrated electron as the reduction species

Fengxia An,Guangyan Wang,Shuyun Wang,Huan Chen,Jingliang Liu

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP) were typical POPs (Persistent Organic Pollutants) in water. In this study, fluorine-doped covalent triazine framework (F-CTF) was synthesized using an ionothermal method, and the adsorption behavior for PFOA and 2,4,6-TCP on F-CTF was investigated using batch experiments and adsorption kinetic tests. Characterization results showed that the large surface area and abundant pore structure of F-CTF provide a large number of adsorption sites for PFOA and 2, 4, 6-TCP. Batch adsorption tests showed that F-CTF adsorbent exhibited high adsorption affinity to PFOA and 2,4,6-TCP, and the adsorption ability could be described well by the Langmuir adsorption model. The maximum adsorption capacity ( q max ) of F-CTF for PFOA and 2,4,6-TCP reached 262.5 mg/g and 709.2 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption process obeyed the pseudo-second-order kinetics. The adsorption mechanism including electrostatic attraction, hydrophobic interaction, and ion-dipole interaction was further confirmed by pH and ionic strength experiments. Additionally, the UV/Na 2 SO 3 /KI system achieved 100 % degradation rate of PFOA and 2, 4, 6-TCP within 40 minutes and the influence factors were further studied. The e aq − was the main active species for the high reduction of PFOA and 2,4,6-TCP in the UV/Na 2 SO 3 /KI system.

Europium(II) Complex with d-f Transition: New Emitter for Blue Light-Emitting Electrochemical Cells with an External Quantum Efficiency of 19.8%

Rubing Bai,Peihao Huo,Nanlong Zheng,Yujia Li,Wenchao Yan,Peiyu Fang,Xiaoyu Zhou,Zuqiang Bian,Zhiwei Liu

Light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) have good prospects in the solid-state lighting field due to their simple single-layer structure and low manufacturing cost. However, the lack of high-efficiency blue LECs limits their development and further application. To solve this problem, many luminescent materials with various mechanisms such as fluorescence, phosphorescence, and thermally-activated delayed fluorescence are studied as emitters in LECs. Besides these materials, herein lanthanide europium(II) (Eu(II)) complex with d-f transition is demonstrated as a new type of emitter for LECs. In detail, a blue emitting Eu(II) complex bis[hydrotris(3-tert-butylpyrazolyl)borate]europium(II) is dispersed into 9-(3-(triphenylsilyl)phenyl)-9H-3,9′-bicarbazole host and tetrahexylammonium tetrafluoroborate electrolyte to make a blend film, which attains a high photoluminescence quantum yield of ≈100%. The LEC using the blend film as an active layer achieves a blue emission with Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage coordinates of (0.12, 0.18) and a record-breaking external quantum efficiency of 19.8%, corresponding to an exciton utilization efficiency of ≈100%. This work reveals that Eu(II) complex with d-f transition is a promising emitter toward high-performance blue LECs, which can inspire further research on Eu(II) complex based LECs.

Antifungal Activity and Mechanisms of 2-Ethylhexanol, a Volatile Organic Compound Produced by Stenotrophomonas sp. NAU1697, against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cucumerinum

Yu Zhang,Zeyuan Li,Shuxin Wei,Changsheng Xu,Minhua Chen,Jierong Sang,Yiru Han,Huang Yan,Zhoukun Li,Zhongli Cui,Xianfeng Ye

Researchers often consider microorganisms from Stenotrophomonas sp. to be beneficial for plants. In this study, the biocidal effects and action mechanisms of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by Stenotrophomonas sp. NAU1697 were investigated. The mycelial growth and spore germination of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cucumerinum (FOC), which is a pathogen responsible for cucumber wilt disease, were significantly inhibited by VOCs emitted from NAU1697. Among the VOCs, 33 were identified, 11 of which were investigated for their antifungal properties. Among the tested compounds, 2-ethylhexanol exhibited the highest antifungal activity toward FOC, with a minimum inhibitory volume (MIV) of 3.0 μL/plate (equal to 35.7 mg/L). Damage to the hyphal cell wall and cell membrane integrity caused a decrease in the ergosterol content and a burst of reactive oxygen species (ROS) after 2-ethylhexanol treatment. DNA damage, which is indicative of apoptosis-like cell death, was monitored in 2-ethylhexanol-treated FOC cells by using micro-FTIR analysis. Furthermore, the activities of mitochondrial dehydrogenases and mitochondrial respiratory chain complex III in 2-ethylhexanol-treated FOC cells were significantly decreased. The transcription levels of genes associated with redox reactions and the cell wall integrity (CWI) pathway were significantly upregulated, thus indicating that stress was caused by 2-ethylhexanol. The findings of this research provide a new avenue for the sustainable management of soil-borne plant fungal diseases.

Mutual influence of piceatannol and bisphenol F on their interaction with pepsin: Insights from spectroscopic, isothermal titration calorimetry and molecular modeling studies

Yabo Shi,Min Liu,Hui Yan,Chang Cai,Qingying Guo,Wenxin Pei,Ruiyan Zhang,Zhengping Wang,Jun Han

The individual and combined interactions of bisphenol F and piceatannol with pepsin were investigated using spectroscopic methods (fluorescence, UV–vis absorption, and circular dichroism spectroscopy), combined with isothermal titration calorimetry and molecular docking. Thermodynamic data showed that hydrogen bonds and van der Waals forces might play a major role for the binding process. Site marking experiments and molecular docking confirmed the binding sites of these two ligands on pepsin. The discrepancy in the binding constant between the binary and ternary systems indicated the competitive binding of piceatannol and bisphenol F to pepsin. Circular dichroism spectra studies suggested that the binding of the two ligands led to a loosening of pepsin backbone. Enzyme activity assays indicated that the inhibition of pepsin activity by piceatannol and bisphenol F was competitive. These results will be helpful to understand the mechanism of piceatannol and bisphenol F affecting the activity of digestive proteases in the sight of the food security.

F-α-DDB-derivative, a novel synthetic of bifendate, plus epirubicin improves antitumor efficacy against triple negative breast cancer without additional cardiotoxicity

Huang Hai-yi,Lin Lisa Zong Yong,Lu Xin-yi,Jiang Ying

Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) refers to a molecular subtype of breast cancers (BC) with high rate of distant metastases and poor prognosis. Epirubicin (EPI) is widely used for the therapy of TNBC but it’s limited in clinical use due to cardiotoxicity and chemotherapy resistance. We previously identified F-α-DDB-derivative, a novel synthetic of bifendate, as a potential agent to improve the therapeutic efficacy of TNBC in combination with EPI since F-α-DDB-derivative inhibited MDA-MB-468, but not as much as EPI. In this study, we investigated the antitumor activity of F-α-DDB-derivative in combination with EPI against TNBC in vitro and in vivo and whether co-treatment would induce additional cardiotoxicity. In human TNBC MDA-MB-468 cells, application of F-α-DDB-derivative (11.5, 23.0, 46.0 μg/ml) in combination with EPI (1.5, 3.0, 6.0 μg/ml) exhibited great inhibition on cell viability and cell proliferation. Additionally, F-α-DDB-derivative (5.75, 11.5, 23.0, 46.0 μg/ml) interacted with EPI (0.75, 1.5, 3.0, 6.0 μg/ml) synergistically to induce apoptosis in MDA-MB-468 cells. This suggests that F-α-DDB-derivative may be more sensitive to apoptotic pathways. Furthermore, we revealed that co-administration of EPI and F-α-DDB-derivative (ip, once every other day for 14 days) significantly increased the therapeutic efficacy of EPI (2.0 mg/kg) or F-α-DDB-derivative (20.0 mg/kg) in mice harboring MDA-MB-468 cell xenografts without additional cardiotoxicity compared to that in EPI monotherapy group. These results implicate that co-treatment of EPI and F-α-DDB-derivative may be a potential therapeutic approach for the treatment of TNBC.

Mechanisms of Current Fluctuation in High-Mobility p-Type Tellurium Field-Effect Transistors

Peng Yang,Yudong Pang,Jiajia Zha,Haoxin Huang,Zhendong Jiang,Meng Zhang,Chaoliang Tan,Wugang Liao

This article utilizes low-frequency noise (LFN) measurements to evaluate the stability of tellurium (Te) field-effect transistor (FET). Our results show that LFN for Te FET on hexagonal boron nitride/silicon dioxide (h-BN/SiO2) tracks the trends of flicker noise (1/f noise) and decreases with increasing overdrive voltages, which is ascribed to the change of dominant carriers and the fluctuation of surface trap density. Compared with Te FET on SiO2, Te FET on h-BN/SiO2 reaches a lower LFN. To further investigate the mechanism of current fluctuation, surface trap density ( ${N} _{\text {st}}$ ) is extracted. The average value of ${N} _{\text {st}}$ for Te FETs on h-BN/SiO2 is smaller than that for Te FETs on SiO2. It is concluded that the introduction of atomically flat h-BN dielectric decreases ${N} _{\text {st}}$ , suggesting that Te FET on h-BN/SiO2 presents higher immunity to LFN and provides a design thought for devices with high stability in the future.
