β-Cyclodextrin/tea saponin (CT) complexes were prepared. • CT-stabilized eugenol emulsion shows superior storage and environmental stability. • CT complex retards the release rate of eugenol in the composite film. • Cationic guar gum maintained emulsion structural integrity during film formation. • The film integrates antibacterial, UV-shielding, and sustained-release properties. Addressing the severe postharvest losses of perishable fruits and environmental concerns caused by plastic packaging, this study developed a multifunctional composite film. Specifically, a composite of β-cyclodextrin and tea saponin—a byproduct of camellia oil processing—was synthesized and served as a stabilizer for the eugenol emulsion. This composite exhibited favorable surface activity, endowing the emulsion with excellent storage stability. Further, incorporating the emulsion into a κ-carrageenan/cationic guar gum film-forming matrix, the obtained film exhibited favorable mechanical properties (tensile strength: 22.62 MPa, elongation at break: 33.16%), outstanding antioxidant activity (scavenging rates of 60.77% for DPPH and 94.03% for ABTS radicals), and excellent sustained-release effect. Strawberry preservation experiment further confirmed that the composite film can inhibit microbial growth and reduce water loss, thereby extending the shelf life of fruits. This study provides valuable insights for advancing green packaging technologies and promoting the sustainable utilization of food processing byproducts. Gardeniafruit, a medicinal and edible resource rich in bioactive compounds, faces several limitations, including low extraction efficiency, poor stability, and intense bitterness. In this study, gardeniafruit powder at varying concentrations (2.5%, 5.0%, 7.5%, 10.0%, and 12.5%) was mixed with a kombucha inoculum and fermented for 8 days to develop functional beverages. The results demonstrated that fermentation withgardeniafruit powder effectively supported SCOBY growth. The 5.0% addition ofgardeniafruit (G5Fer) produced thicker bacterial cellulose, higher total titratable acidity (10.43 g/L), and increased total polyphenols (37.12 mg GAE/100 mL) after 8 days of fermentation. G5Fer also achieved the highest sensory scores, especially in aroma, flavor, and overall acceptance. Higher doses ofgardeniafruit (≥7.5%) caused turbidity, dark color, and strong sourness, leading to lower sensory scores. Non-targeted metabolomics revealed that kombucha fermentation reshaped the metabolic profile, enriching phenolic acids (e.g., gallic acid and caffeic acid) and flavonol glycosides (e.g., kaempferol-3-O-rutinoside) via the biosynthesis of phenylpropanoid pathways while antioxidant activity (DPPH and ABTS+scavenging rate) was well maintained. Overall, G5Fer achieved the best balance among acidity, bioactive compounds, and consumer preference. In conclusion, gardeniafruit represents a promising substrate for developing a functional, palatable kombucha-like beverage, aligning with the growing demand for value-added fermented products.

To elucidate the effects of different selenium (Se) spray frequencies on the comprehensive quality of apple fruits, this study was conducted using “Luli” apples to investigate the influences of various Se application times on basic quality attributes, sugar-acid composition, aroma profiles, and phenolic compounds. The results indicated that with an increase in the number of Se sprays (100 mg/L), fruit firmness, soluble solid content, vitamin C content, and peel color parameters exhibited a non-linear response, with their values peaking under the T2 treatment regime (two applications on June 1 and June 21). The total sugar, sorbitol, and fructose contents in fruits from treatments T1 (one application on June 1) and T2 were significantly higher than those from T3 (three applications on June 1, June 21, and July 11) and T4 (four applications on June 1, June 21, July 11, and July 31). In contrast, the levels of total organic acids and malic acid gradually decreased with increasing Se application frequency. Se treatment significantly enhanced the total content of aromatic substances, particularly esters and ketones. Furthermore, the phenolic content exhibited an initial increase followed by a decrease in response to increasing spray frequency. A comprehensive evaluation using the membership function method ranked the overall fruit quality under different treatments in the order: T2 > T3 > T1 > T4 > CK (water only). In summary, applying Se twice during the apple growing season yielded the best integrated fruit quality, while excessive spray frequencies adversely affected fruit quality development.

A flexible filter paper-based FP/AgNWs@ZIF-8 SERS platform enables rapid on-site detection of ferbam residues. • The optimized substrate shows high sensitivity, uniformity, and batch-to-batch reproducibility. • Synergistic electromagnetic and chemical enhancement enables trace ferbam detection in apple samples. The extensive use of the fungicide ferbam in food matrices necessitates effective monitoring due to its toxicity; however, constructing flexible on-site sensing platforms for the sensitive and rapid trace-level analysis of ferbam remains highly challenging. Herein, we report a flexible filter paper-supported silver nanowire@zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (FP/AgNWs@ZIF-8) sensing platform for the surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) detection of trace ferbam pesticide residues on fruit surfaces. The effect of ZIF-8 growth time on the Raman signal of the sensing platform was investigated, and 40 min was identified as the optimal growth time for enhancing the Raman response toward aromatic molecules, such as methylene blue (MB), 4-mercaptobenzoic acid(4-MBA), and malachite green (MG). Under this condition, the FP/AgNWs@ZIF-8 sensing platform showed strong linearity for MB concentrations ranging from 10 −6 M to 10 −10 M, with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 1.17 × 10 −11 M, good uniformity, and strong batch-to-batch stability. When applied to ferbam detection, the sensor shows good linearity over a concentration range from 10 −3 to 10 −7 M, with an LOD as low as 10 −7 M, good reproducibility, and strong batch-to-batch stability. In addition, the sensor is capable of determining trace ferbam residues on apple surfaces, as demonstrated by wiping-sampling experiments, showing reliable linear detection of ferbam over a wide concentration range. Overall, the proposed synergistic interplay between the electromagnetic and chemical mechanisms intrinsic to the metal-organic framework-based SERS platform provides a viable strategy for trace pesticide analysis in fruits and vegetables. The polysaccharide was extracted by ultrasonic-assisted method with deep eutectic solvent from Rosa roxburghii Tratt. (RRT). The single-factor experiment was carried out first, and then the response surface experiment was designed to obtain the optimal process conditions. The optimal extraction conditions were the molar ratio of choline chloride to oxalate of 1:1, the water content of deep eutectic solvent (DES) of 27%, the solid-liquid ratio of 1:52 g/mL, time of 99 min, and the power of 240 W, with the extraction yield of 3.397%. The yield of RRT polysaccharide (RRTP) was 2.693% and 2.521% by water immersion and ultrasonic water extraction, respectively, indicating that the DES extraction method (3.397%) is superior to these two methods, and the optimization effect is good. After purification by the DEAE-SephaRosa (DEAE) column and Sephadex G-75 column, the biological activities of the extracted polysaccharides were tested. At a concentration of 6.4 mg/mL, RRTPs-1 inhibited α-glucosidase by 26%. The IC 50 value of RRTPs-1 against α-amylase was 2.94 mg/mL. At 3.2 mg/mL, RRTPs-1 inhibited DPPH· by 22.36%. The IC 50 value of RRTPs-1 on ABTS· + scavenging was 0.055 mg/mL. The analysis of monosaccharide composition shows that it contains glucose, rhamnose, xylose, arabinose, mannose, galactose, galacturonic acid, and glucuronic acid, with the molar ratio of 1.00: 14.14: 4.28: 5.63: 15.47: 64.50: 5.03: 41.43. In this paper, the process of extracting RRTP with deep eutectic solvent was studied and optimized. The activity study showed that RRTP has certain hypoglycemic and antioxidant activities. Therefore, this study can provide an experimental basis for the establishment of an industrialized production process of polysaccharides and the study of their biological activities.

This study investigated the extraction, structural characterization, and antioxidant activity of polysaccharides derived from Akebia Fruit. The ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE) process of polysaccharides was optimized through the application of the Box-Behnken Design (BBD) in conjunction with the genetic algorithm-back propagation (GA-BP) artificial neural network model. The experimental data showed that the GA-BP model performed better than the BBD model, and more polysaccharide components could be extracted under the process parameters predicted by this model. The GA-BP model predicted the optimal extraction parameters as follows: the extraction temperature was 65 ℃, the solid-liquid ratio was 1:50 g/mL, the extraction power was 400 W. Experimental results showed that combining UAE with GA-BP artificial neural network not only enabled efficient extraction of polysaccharides but also optimized the extraction process. After purification, AFP-1 was obtained and its characterization was conducted. Structural analysis results indicated that compound AFP-1 was a homogeneous polysaccharide with a lamellar structure and a molecular weight of 13,775 Da. The polysaccharide contained a network of pyranose rings, which were interconnected to form a complex framework. The polysaccharide was composed of a mixture of monosaccharide units, specifically arranged in a specific configuration that included mannose, ribose, glucose, galactose, and fucose. Finally, the antioxidant activity of AFP-1 was preliminarily verified through in vitro experiments. Subsequent research could systematically explore the biological activities of AFP-1, by employing both in vitro and in vivo models.

Developing sustainable packaging materials with enhanced mechanical strength and moisture resistance remains a pressing challenge. In this study, a self-reinforcing and recyclable film composed of poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) was fabricated through dynamic covalent crosslinking. The strategy involved the formation of amide bonds (-CONH-) between the -COOH groups of CMC and the -NH 2 groups of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPA), thereby reinforcing intermolecular entanglements and enhancing structural integrity. Comprehensive characterization using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed the construction of a robust double-crosslinked network. This architecture substantially reduced water absorption and improved film durability. The optimized PVA-10 % N-CMC film exhibited enhanced hydrophobicity, as evidenced by a water contact angle of 97.36°, low water solubility (14.67 %), and minimal water vapor permeability (0.88 g × mm/m 2 × h × kPa). Moreover, its outstanding mechanical performance and recyclability under varying humidity conditions underscore its potential as an eco-friendly packaging material. Notably, the film effectively prolonged the freshness of strawberries, maintaining fruit quality for up to 9 days during storage. Collectively, these findings offer a scalable approach for engineering high-performance biodegradable films, paving the way for advanced smart food packaging technologies.

A simple and highly sensitive surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) method has been developed for the detection of thiram residues in fruit juices. Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) @ gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) hydrogel beads as SERS substrates were prepared through ionic crosslinking. The obtained porous CMC @ Au NPs hydrogel bead substrates showed excellent sensitivity for the detection of thiram in apple, grape, and orange juices, with detection limits of 0.001, 0.002, and 0.002 mg/L, respectively. The impact of primary non-target components in juices on SERS detection of thiram was investigated, revealing that the presence of sugars and acids caused varying degrees of interference in SERS measurements. This innovative, practical, and affordable CMC @ Au NPs porous hydrogel bead for thiram detection might be readily expanded to analyze a broad spectrum of other compounds found in food goods at trace amounts.

Litchi ( Litchi chinensis Sonn.) is sensitive to water loss in early detached stage, which triggers oxidative stress and cellular damage inducing pericarp browning. This study analyzed surface wax metabolism in litchi fruit via lipid profiling, gene expression analysis, and overexpression in tomato lines to investigate its response to water loss. The rapid water loss of litchi fruit was largely from pericarp accompanied with the development of gold-brown appearance under unpacked conditions. To response the water loss and browning process, genes involved in biosynthesis of cuticular waxes were upregulated following the increased accumulation of very-long-chain aliphatic compounds on exocarp surface. The candidate genes LcLACS4 and LcWAX2 localized to the endoplasmic reticulum, where is the main position for wax biosynthesis. Heterologous expression of LcLACS4 and LcWAX2 both enhanced drought tolerance for tomato plant, increased the accumulation of cuticular waxes, particularly very-long-chain aldehydes and n -alkanes, as well as decreased water loss of tomato fruit. These findings demonstrate that the alteration of very-long-chain cuticular wax may play important role in response to the water loss of fruit, thereby influencing the browning of litchi. It also provides insights to link between cuticular wax metabolism and the regulation changes in senescence of harvest litchi fruit.

Total antioxidant capacity represents a critical parameter for assessing food quality and freshness, while conventional detection methodologies are often constrained by operational intricacy or insufficient efficiency. Herein, we developed a rapid and user-friendly colorimetric sensing platform based on manganese oxide (MnOx) nanozymes for the quantification of antioxidants in fruit juice samples. MnOx nanozymes can efficiently catalyze the oxidation of the colorless substrate 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine, yielding a blue reaction product; however, the presence of antioxidants significantly suppresses this catalytic activity, inducing concentration-dependent color shifts in the reaction system. After systematic optimization of key reaction parameters (e.g., nanozyme concentration, TMB dosage, reaction temperature, and incubation time), the proposed platform achieved a detection limit of 1.79 μM, with a naked - eye visual detection limit of 5 μM and a total detection time of <10 min. Practical validation in real fruit juice samples verified the accuracy of the developed method for antioxidant quantification, as evidenced by recovery rates of 88.76%–109.10% and RSDs of all below 3.44%.This work introduces a novel, efficient, and stable approach for the rapid monitoring of TAC in food products, exhibiting considerable potential for food quality control and safety assessment.

Aril breakdown results in the loss of nutrition and commodity value, thereby limits the postharvest storage of longan fruit. Histone deacetylases (HDACs) are important epigenetic regulators in many biological processes. Results in the current study showed that application of valeric acid (VA), which belongs to HDAC inhibitors, suppressed longan aril breakdown during postharvest storage. Meanwhile, lower contents of malondialdehyde, H 2 O 2 , and O 2 −. , but higher activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) were observed in VA-treated fruit. Western blotting (WB) assay confirmed enhancement of histone H3 and H4 acetylation in VA-treated fruit, suggesting the possible inhibition of HDAC activity by VA. Furthermore, VA regulated DlHDACs expressions , with DlHDA5 and DlHDA8 expressions apposite of WB results. These results revealed that VA inhibited longan aril breakdown through enhancing the reactive oxygen species scavenging ability in relation to HDAC inhibitor activity. Our findings suggested that VA treatment delayed aril breakdown of longan fruit in relation to histone deacetylase-mediated epigenetic regulation and highlighted DlHDA5 and DlHDA8 potentially be important candidates for further research.

In this work, defect-engineered graphene nanoribbon (DGNR) was prepared and used for the first time as a novel electrode material for the sensitive detection of parathion methyl (MP). The morphology, structure and component of DGNR were investigated via scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and Raman spectra; and the detection conditions for MP were optimized. Owing to the large surface area, superior conductivity, rich edge defects and active sites, DGNR modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) shows excellent sensing performances for MP. Under optimized conditions, a considerable low detection limit of 4.3 nM and wide linearity from 0.01 to 25.0 μM were obtained. In addition, the applications of the proposed DGNR/GCE in water and fruit samples possess satisfactory recoveries from 95.7 to 106.4%. This study offers a promising application for DGNR-based materials in developing simple, low cost and highly sensitive sensing protocol for MP and other pesticides. Graphical abstract
