Differences in the catalytic properties of Fe isotopes

Songtao Xiao,Yubing Xue,Jing Zhao,Xiechun Liu,Haifeng Cong,Tian Lan,Xiaojuan Liu,Dashu Pan,Lingyu Wang,Guoan Ye,Yinggen Ouyang

The significant differences in the catalytic properties caused by different ‘isotopic catalysts’ were discovered for the first time. The commonly purchased Fe2O3 is a ‘mixture’ of different Fe isotopic oxides which means the catalytic effect of Fe2O3 is theoretically a synthetical result of all isotopic compounds. In this work, the differences in catalytic properties of α-Fe2O3 with natural abundance ratio and separated isotopic α-Fe2O3 (α-54Fe2O3, α-56Fe2O3, and α-58Fe2O3) catalyzing thermal decomposition of ammonium perchlorate (AP) were investigated, and are mainly attributed to the difference in the charge distribution of the nuclei of different iron isotopes. The result suggests that isotope effects in different isotopes when utilized as catalysts are caused by nuclear morphology and the nuclear charge distribution. This study will serve as a base as well as an initiation for future studies of the isotopic catalyst.

Oxygen-Vacancy-Rich Fe@Fe3O4 Boosting Fenton Chemistry

Rongwei Zheng,Ruifan Tan,Yali Lv,Xiaoling Mou,Junqiao Qian,Ronghe Lin,Ping Fang,Weidong Kan

Iron-based materials are widely applied in Fenton chemistry, and they have promising prospects in the processing of wastewater. The composition complexity and rich chemistry of iron and/or oxides, however, hamper the precise understanding of the active sites and the working mechanism, which still remain highly controversial. Herein, iron oxides of four different model systems are designed through a conventional precipitation method plus H2reduction treatment. These systems feature Fe@Fe3O4with abundant oxygen vacancy, Fe0and Fe3O4particles with interface structures, and Fe3O4-dominated nanoparticles of different sizes. These materials are applied in the decomposition of methyl orange as a model reaction to assess the Fenton chemistry. The Fe@Fe3O4with core–shell structures exhibits significantly higher decomposition activity than the other Fe3O4-rich nanoparticles. A thin Fe3O4layer formed by auto-oxidation of iron particles when exposed to air can boost the activity as compared with the Fe0and Fe3O4particles with interface structures but poor oxygen vacancy. The unique hetero-structure with the co-existence of both metallic iron and oxygen vacancy displays excellent redox propensity, which might account for the superior Fenton activity. This finding provides a new perspective to understand and design highly efficient iron-based Fenton catalysts.

Transformation of iodide by Fe(II) activated peroxydisulfate

Zijun Dong,Chengchun Jiang,Jingxin Yang,Xi Zhang,Weili Dai,Pengwei Cai

This work investigates the transformation of iodide (I − ) by Fe(II)-activated peroxydisulfate (PDS). The transformation of I − into iodate (IO 3 − ) is a two-step process, involving reactive iodine species, such as hypoiodous acid (HOI), as a key intermediate, and IO 3 − as the final product. In the first step, SO 4 •- produced by Fe(II)-activated PDS is mainly responsible for the transformation of I − into HOI. In the second step, Fe(IV) formed by the reaction of Fe(III) with PDS is required, to facilitate the further oxidation of HOI to IO 3 − . The disproportionation of HOI and the oxidation by PDS alone contribute negligibly to IO 3 − formation. The IO 3 − yield increases to a maximum, before decreasing gradually, with increased PDS and Fe(II) dosages. The transformation of I − into IO 3 − is favored by lower pH and higher temperature, due to the greater SO 4 •- production by the reaction of Fe(II) with PDS under these conditions. Humic acid , as a representative natural organic matter, scavenges the formed HOI to form iodinated disinfection byproducts , which largely inhibit the transformation of I − into IO 3 − . In addition, the transformation of I − into IO 3 − and iodinated disinfection byproducts by Fe(II) activated PDS was confirmed in the natural waters.

Intercalation-Dependent Magnetism in Fe-Intercalated Tantalum Disulfide

Ning Li,Minzhi Dai,Zijing Zhao,Xuan Zhou,Qingduo Wang,Ruihuan Duan,Shuhua Ma,Changjian Li,Yanglong Hou,Xin Luo,Zheng liu,Xiaoxu Zhao

Filling the van der Waals gap by self- or foreign atoms in 2D materials has been proven of great interest because a spectrum of quantum mechanical properties can be tuned. Particularly, Fe-intercalated FexTaS2 crystals show relatively high Curie temperature (TC), air-stable, and giant magnetoresistance. However, the underlying Fe-intercalant concentration- and arrangement-dependent magnetic properties remain elusive, largely impeding the precise design of multifunctional FexTaS2 crystals with desired functionalities. Here, we employ aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and density functional theory (DFT) to systematically explore the Fe-intercalation arrangement and relative magnetic properties in a series of Fe-intercalated FexTaS2 crystals. We found that the Fe intercalations evolve from 2a × 2a to disorder and then to √3a × √3a arrangements with increasing intercalation concentration, displaying consistent occupancy of the octahedral vacancies. The TC and coercivity (Hc) strongly depend on the Fe-intercalation arrangements and are weakly coupled with the Fe concentrations. DFT calculations suggest that these phenomena originate from the modified spin-polarized states and magnetic anisotropy, being strongly dependent on the Fe-intercalation arrangements. This work sheds light on the origin of arrangement- and concentration-dependent magnetism in foreign-intercalated 2D magnetic systems, paving the way for precise tuning of magnetic orders by controlled foreign intercalation.

Indirect Electrochemical Reduction of Indigo on Carbon Felt: Process Optimization and Reaction Mechanism

Ying’hua Xu,Hai’feng Li,Cheng’pu Chu,Ping Huang,Chun’an Ma

A carbon felt was used as the cathode material for the indirect electrochemical reduction of indigo in alkaline aqueous solution employing iron-triethanolamine (Fe-TEA) complex as a redox mediator. Surface structure and specific surface area of the carbon felt electrode and its electrochemical performance toward the reduction of indigo were investigated by SEM, BET, and cyclic voltammetry, respectively. Moreover, an optimization of different operating conditions for the reduction of indigo was performed with an H-cell. In particular, the dependence of current efficiency (CE) on electrolysis time was chosen to analyze the indirect electrochemical reduction mechanism of indigo. The results showed that the carbon felt, having a high specific surface area of approximately 7289 cm2·g–1, is an excellent electrode material for the indirect electrochemical reduction of indigo and that a moderate current density, temperature, and concentration of indigo has the most beneficial effects on the reduction process.

Mesoporous carbon promoting the efficiency and stability of single atomic electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction

Xilong Wang,Hongwei Zhu,Chen Yang,Jiajia Lu,Lirong Zheng,Han-Pu Liang

Single-atom Fe–N–C electrocatalysts are attracting more attentions as one most promising transition metal based single-atom catalyst towards the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, the inaccessibility of internal Fe-N x active sites and insufficient stability hinder their large-scale application. Herein, a facile benzoate-assisted self-template strategy which could dramatically enhance the oxygen reduction reaction catalytic performance and stability of ZIF-8 derived atomically dispersed Fe–N–C catalysts (Fe-SA/Meso-C) is developed. The sodium benzoate used in the present work is effective for promoting the formation of Fe–N–C catalysts with denser accessible active sites as well as mesopores with diameters ranging from 2.5 to 5 nm. These structural advantages make the synthesized Fe-SA/Meso-C catalysts afford excellent electrocatalytic performance for the ORR in 0.1 M KOH with a positive half-wave potential (E 1/2 ) of 0.926 V vs. RHE and exceptionally high kinetic current density (J k ) of 92.5 mA cm −2 at 0.85 V. Beyond that, Fe-SA/Meso-C shows outstanding long-term stability with over 90% activity retain after 90 h chronoamperometry i-t test as well as superior tolerance to methanol crossover . More importantly, the assembled zinc-air battery with Fe-SA/Meso-C as the cathode material achieves a high peak power density of 166.2 mW cm −2 and a high specific capacity of 776.1 mA h g −1 . Our results reveal that small mesopores in atomically dispersed Fe–N–C electrocatalysts could facilitate mass transport, increase the accessibility of active sites and optimize the interface between electrolyte and carbon matrix, thus optimizing their electrocatalytic performance for the ORR. This work paves a way to the design and synthesis of stable single-atom electrocatalysts with optimized structure, electrochemical performance and promising applications.

Enhancement of the heterogeneous photo-Fenton performance of GO/MIL-100(Fe)@Fe3O4 heterostructures for erythromycin degradation through accelerating Fe(II) generation

Lian Yu,Baozi Lu,Zhen Liang,Dabin Wang,Jiarui Lu,Fengyi Wei,Cunzhen Liang

The slow rate of the Fe3+/Fe2+ cycle has decreased the efficiency of photo-Fenton technology for wastewater treatment. Here, a novel GO/MIL-100(Fe)@Fe3O4 heterostructure was constructed by growing Fe3O4 nanoparticles and MIL-100(Fe) onto GO, thus accelerating the Fe3+/Fe2+ cycle and improving catalytic activity, and it was used as a heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalyst for ERY degradation. The catalyst was fully characterized by TEM, XRD, Raman spectroscopy, XPS, N2 adsorption–desorption and UV-vis DRS. The influences of initial solution pH, H2O2 concentration and catalyst dosage on ERY degradation were investigated. Under optimal conditions (initial pH of 4.03, 10.0 mM H2O2, 0.1 g L−1 catalyst), the GO/MIL-100(Fe)@Fe3O4 + H2O2 + vis system removed 97.3% of ERY (0.1 mmol L−1) within 60 min, and the pseudo-first-order rate constant was 0.0575 min−1. Furthermore, the catalyst showed favorable stability, maintaining excellent catalytic activity even after 4 cycles. A possible degradation mechanism of ERY was proposed based on the results of characterization, ERY degradation, and reactive species analysis. Fe3O4, MIL-100(Fe) and GO in the catalyst showed synergistic effects; the photo-induced electrons from MIL-100(Fe) could be immediately transferred to Fe3O4, promoting Fe3+ reduction to Fe2+ in the photo-Fenton reaction. GO in the catalyst could promote electron transfer from MIL-100(Fe) and organics to Fe3O4, significantly promoting the Fe3+/Fe2+ cycle.

Poly lactic acid production using the ring opening polymerization (ROP) method using Lewis acid surfactant combined iron (Fe) catalyst (Fe(DS)3)

T. Widjaja,N. Hendrianie,S. Nurkhamidah,A. Altway,Bayu Yusuf,Fakhrizal F,Aisyah Alifatul Zahidah Rohma,Atha Pahlevi

LASC catalyst synthesis process was carried out using iron metal (Fe) and its characterization properties were tested. There are five stages carried out, namely, the manufacture of the LASC Fe(DS)3 catalyst, lactic acid dehydration, polycondensation of lactic acid into l -lactic acid oligomers (OLLA), depolymerization of oligomers into l -lactide, and the ROP process to convert l -lactide into Polymers. l -lactic acid (PLLA). The analysis used is as follows, Karl-Fisher; Spectroscopy Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR); and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (HNMR); Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC); Thermogravimetry Gravity Analysis (TGA) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). Based on the experimental results, the catalyst Fe(DS) 3 has a crystallinity value of 24% which indicates an amorphous nature and is easy to react. The value of the thermal stability of the catalyst is at 180 °C where the catalyst is able to process up to a temperature of 180  ° C. Each step of the ROP is validated by FTIR analysis which shows that the components of the group are in accordance with the expected product. The comparison of the crystallinity values of PLA produced with FeCl 3 and Fe(DS) 3 were 37.5 and 49%, respectively. Melting temperature (Tm) values are 111 and 107  ° C, respectively, Td values are 327 and 352 °C, and the resulting molecular weights are 23,720 and 20,232 g/mol. Based on the results obtained, it can be seen that the use of a LASC catalyst in the form of Fe(DS) 3 is more effective than without using a LASC catalyst.

Effects of Environmental Fe Concentrations on Formation and Evolution of Allophane in Al-Si-Fe Systems: Implications for Both Earth and Mars

Peixin Du,Peng Yuan,Jiacheng Liu,Yixuan Yang,Hongling Bu,Shun Wang,Junming Zhou,Hongzhe Song,Dong Liu,Joseph R. Michalski,Chengshuai Liu

Allophane, a common component on Earth and a probable constituent of the amorphous component on Mars, is closely associated with Fe in the form of structural Fe and/or iron (oxyhydr)oxide coatings. However, until now, the formation and evolution of allophane as products of environmental Fe concentrations have rarely been studied. We investigated allophane precipitation from gels with different Fe/(Fe + Al) molar ratios ( n , 0 ≤ n ≤ 1.0). X-ray diffraction patterns and Fourier transform infrared spectra of the products showed that allophane was nearly the only product at n ≤ 0.2 and that the crystallinity of Fe-rich allophane decreased with increasing n . Combined with the results of transmission electron microscopy and Mössbauer spectroscopy, Fe was found to be mainly incorporated into the gibbsite-like sheet of allophane, forming clusters; the highest Fe-for-Al substitution content was roughly estimated to be 20 mol.%. As n increased further, the formation of allophane was increasingly suppressed, and the Fe phases began to separate from the Al-Si phases, resulting in mixtures of incipient allophane and incipient akaganeite and finally akaganeite. The near-infrared spectroscopic data (1.2–2.6 μ m) of the products showed incapability in identifying poorly ordered minerals in Al-Si-Fe systems, while the features in the range of 0.4–1.2 μ m were powerful for studying iron occurrence in the products. These findings not only offer insights into the formation, evolution and geological role of allophane in Al-Si-Fe systems on Earth but also help constrain the paleoenvironment of locations where allophane and akaganeite co-occur on Mars. Key Points Environmental Fe concentrations control the formation and evolution of allophane in Al-Si-Fe systems Near-infrared spectra (1.2–2.6 μ m) show incapability in identifying short-range ordered minerals in Al-Si-Fe systems Co-occurrence of allophane and akaganeite would constrain the local palaeoenvironment on Mars

Mechanisms of Ligand Structures of Fe-Salicylic Acid and Fe-Gallic Acid Colloidal Complexes Regulating the Flotation Behavior of Scheelite with Calcite

Zheyu Huang,Jingzhong Kuang,Tingsheng Qiu,Mingming Yu

The similarity in surface properties between scheelite and calcite makes their flotation separation particularly challenging, thereby severely limiting the efficient utilization of tungsten resources. In this paper, Fe-SYA and Fe-GA colloidal complexes were synthesized via a metal-organic coordination strategy using Fe³⁺ with salicylic acid (SYA) and gallic acid (GA), respectively, and their structure-dependent flotation regulation mechanisms were systematically investigated. The structural stability, interfacial adsorption behavior, and their relationship with flotation selectivity were elucidated through contact angle measurements, zeta potential analysis, XPS, TEM and DFT calculations. The results showed that Fe-SYA and Fe-GA preferentially adsorbed on the calcite surface at pH=4 and a ratio of 1:1/2, significantly reducing calcite hydrophobicity and collector adsorption, while exerting only a minor effect on scheelite, thereby enabling selective separation. Owing to its abundant phenolic hydroxyl groups, Fe-GA formed a stable reticulated polydentate coordination structure with enhanced electronegativity and spatial stability, facilitating the formation of a dense inhibition film on calcite and yielding superior flotation performance, with a WO₃ concentrate grade of 71.03% and a recovery of 86.54%. In contrast, Fe-SYA exhibited lower structural stability and was prone to hydrolysis into Fe(OH)₃ colloids under alkaline conditions, resulting in non-selective inhibition. This work elucidates the structure–selectivity relationship of metal-organic colloidal complexes and provides a green and efficient strategy for the flotation separation of calcium-bearing minerals.

Role of Fe(IV) and Fe(V) in micropollutant abatement by visible-light-activated ferrate(VI) via ligand-to-metal charge transfer

Peijie Li,Jinchuan Lian,Xiaoxiang Cheng,Xinsheng Luo,Kunyu Chen,Congwei Luo,Ruimin Mu,Daoji Wu,Tao Yang

Although light-assisted ferrate (Fe(VI)) activation offers an activator-free strategy for micropollutant abatement, how visible light generates Fe(V)/Fe(IV) remains unclear at the molecular level. Here, five narrow-band LEDs (440–525 nm) were used to link Fe(VI) photochemistry with pollutant oxidation kinetics and iron-species contributions. At 440 nm, Vis-LED/Fe(VI) degraded 79.6–99.3% of six electron-rich micropollutants within 3 min, increasing rate constants by up to 4.3-fold relative to Fe(VI). Scavenging experiments and kinetic modeling identified Fe(V) and Fe(IV) as the dominant reactive species, together accounting for over 96% of diclofenac sodium (DCF) degradation. Time-dependent density functional theory calculations showed that visible excitation induced ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT), which elongated a Fe-O bond from 1.654 to 2.025 Å and generated an Fe(V)-oxyl excited state that abstracted a hydrogen atom from water to give Fe(V). The apparent quantum yield of Fe(VI) decomposition decreased from 0.140 to 0.104 mol einstein −1 as wavelength increased from 440 to 525 nm, consistent with the charge-transfer component being photochemically productive. The system performance improved with light intensities and Fe(VI) concentrations, but declined under alkaline conditions and in humic-acid-rich water. These results establish visible-light activation of Fe(VI) via LMCT and identify Fe(V)/Fe(IV) as the oxidants responsible for micropollutant abatement.

Ni–Fe bimetallic carbon nanotube catalysts derived from a two-dimensional metalloporphyrin Fe-MOF precursor for oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reactions

Yunyang Wu

Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are critical half-reactions in energy conversion devices such as metal–air batteries and reversible fuel cells, and their sluggish kinetics severely limit the overall device performance. Therefore, the development of efficient, stable, and low-cost non-precious metal bifunctional electrocatalysts is of great significance. In this study, a MOF-derived bifunctional electrocatalytic material (NiFe@CNT), featuring NiFe bimetallic alloys uniformly anchored within a carbon nanotube network, was successfully fabricated using a two-dimensional metalloporphyrin-based Fe-MOF precursor via metal site modulation by introducing Ni, combined with a high-temperature pyrolysis strategy. Structural characterization results indicate that NiFe@CNT possesses an intact three-dimensional CNT conductive network, a high degree of graphitization (ID/IG = 0.39), and uniformly dispersed NiFe alloy active phases. Electrochemical evaluations reveal that NiFe@CNT functions as a highly active bifunctional catalyst for both ORR and OER in alkaline environments. Regarding its ORR activity, the material exhibits a half-wave potential comparable to that of benchmark Pt/C, with reaction kinetics proceeding through an approximately four-electron transfer mechanism. In terms of OER performance, a current density of 10 mA cm−2 is attained at a modest overpotential of merely 1.514 V. In alkaline electrolyte, the ORR proceeds predominantly through a four-electron pathway converting O2 to H2O (O2 + 4H+ + 4e− → 2H2O), while the OER involves the reverse four-electron oxidation of hydroxide to produce molecular oxygen (2H2O → O2 + 4H+ + 4e−). Furthermore, durability assessments confirm that NiFe@CNT surpasses commercial noble metal benchmarks in long-term operational stability. This work presents a viable approach for fabricating advanced noble-metal-free oxygen electrocatalysts through two-dimensional MOF-derived engineering.
