Photocatalytic CO2 reduction coupled with water oxidation provides a fascinating approach to mitigating the issues of global warming and energy shortage. Herein, a direct Z-scheme heterojunction of Co1-C3N4@α-Fe2O3 comprising a g-C3N4-supported single-atomic Co site catalyst (denoted as Co1-C3N4) and α-Fe2O3 nanorod arrays is fabricated for efficient CO2 reduction. A CO production rate of 14.9 μmol g−1 h−1 with a high CO selectivity (>99%) is achieved under visible-light irradiation without any sacrificial agents other than water. Time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) analysis reveals that both the Z-scheme mechanism and the single-atomic Co sites contribute to the prolonged lifetime of the photo-induced excitons. Moreover, the formation of the Z-scheme heterojunction would lead to an altered charge density of the single-atomic Co sites. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier-transform spectroscopy and anion adsorption measurements reveal that the key intermediate CO2− could be efficiently stabilized by the positively charged Co sites in Co1-C3N4@α-Fe2O3, thus enhancing the CO2 reduction performance. This work offers a new direction for the rational design of single-atomic site catalysts in artificial photosynthesis.

HPW/Fe 2 O 3 nanorod catalyst displays excellent NH 3 -SCR performance over a broad working window. • HPW/Fe 2 O 3 exhibits higher SO 2 and H 2 O resistance compared with bare Fe 2 O 3 nanorods. • The modification of Fe 2 O 3 with HPW enriches the surface reactive oxygen species and acid sites of catalyst. • The NH 3 -SCR reaction on HPW/Fe 2 O 3 obeys the L-H and E-R routes simultaneously. Exploiting denitration catalysts that integrate exceptional low-and-medium temperature catalytic activity with superior SO 2 and H 2 O tolerance remains a core bottleneck for practical NO x abatement in industrial flue gas treatment. Here, a novel HPW/Fe 2 O 3 nanorod catalyst with highly exposed (110) facet modified by phosphotungstic acid was successfully synthesized. Compared with pure Fe 2 O 3 nanorods, the HPW/Fe 2 O 3 catalyst with a 15% phosphotungstic acid loading exhibited the most outstanding catalytic performance, delivering nearly 100% NO x conversion and N 2 selectivity within the temperature window of 250–425 °C. The characterization results revealed that the interaction between HPW and Fe 2 O 3 generated more oxygen vacancies, which significantly enhanced the low-temperature NO x conversion of HPW/Fe 2 O 3 . Meanwhile, the abundant moderately strong acid sites inhibited the over-oxidation of NH 3 at high temperatures, thereby improving the high-temperature NO x conversion of HPW/Fe 2 O 3 . The introduction of HPW significantly suppressed SO 2 adsorption on the HPW/Fe 2 O 3 surface, endowing the catalyst with favorable tolerance toward the coexistence of H 2 O and SO 2 at 250 °C. Time-resolved in-situ transient measurements and kinetic analyses disclosed that the adsorbed NH 3 species on the HPW/Fe 2 O 3 surface were capable of reducing gaseous/adsorbed NO x simultaneously, following both the Eley-Rideal ( E -R) and Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) routes. The phosphotungstic acid-modified HPW/Fe 2 O 3 catalyst is endowed with abundant active oxygen species and moderately strong acid sites, which greatly facilitates the NH 3 -SCR reaction proceeding via both the Eley-Rideal ( E -R) and Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) pathways. The rapid expansion of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) consumption has intensified global concerns regarding resource depletion and environmental risks associated with their disposal. To promote the sustainable development of the new energy industry, this study presents a green, acid-free, and economically viable process for recovering valuable metals from spent LIBs BM through synergistic sulfation roasting coupled with water leaching. Under optimized experimental conditions (gas flow rate of 400 mL•min⁻¹, roasting atmosphere of 5 % SO 2 -20 %O 2 , temperature of 650 °C, Fe 2 O 3 -to-black-mass mass ratio of 1.6, and roasting duration of 90 min), the recycling efficiencies of Li, Co, Cu, and Ni reached 89.65 %, 89.18 %, 91.05 %, and 62.35 %, respectively. Moreover, Thermodynamic analysis and experimental observations revealed that Fe 2 O 3 functions as an effective solid-phase catalyst by maintaining porous reaction interfaces and facilitating multiple sulfation pathways, which significantly enhanced the conversion of metal oxides into water-soluble sulfates. Building on these findings, a novel recycling route was developed by integrating industrial SO₂ emissions, Fe 2 O 3 -containing metallurgical residues, and spent LIBs, achieving simultaneous pollutant mitigation and resource recovery. Finally, comprehensive techno-economic and environmental assessments verified that the proposed process is low-energy, acid-free, and environmentally benign, providing a scalable and circular pathway for LIBs recycling. This work offers a new strategy for coupling metallurgical innovation with waste-to-resource utilization in the context of green and sustainable manufacturing.

Transition-metal oxides offer a low-cost alternative to precious metals for environmental catalysis, yet CO oxidation under humid and sulfur-laden conditions remains challenging due to rapid poisoning. Herein, we report an atomic dispersion of Ti‑decorated MnO x -Fe 2 O 3 catalyst that achieves high activity and remarkable H 2 O/SO 2 resistance. Atomically dispersed Ti provides electron-accepting 3d states from O 2p orbitals, which redistributes and stabilizes selected O 2p states while modifying their hybridization with neighboring Mn/Fe 3d orbitals. The localized electronic restructuring strengthens CO adsorption and facilitates lattice oxygen activation via a Mars-van Krevelen (MvK)-like mechanism, lowering the apparent activation energy to 64.59 kJ/mol. Simultaneously, Ti-O-Fe interfaces weaken SO 2 adsorption (from −1.96 eV to −0.19 eV) and suppress H 2 O competition, retaining >55% CO conversion under 10 vol% H 2 O and 10 ppm SO 2 , far surpassing the parent oxide (<10%). The orbital tuning strategy enables scalable poison resistant catalysts for industrial emission control, reducing reliance on precious‑metal systems.

As a renewable energy source, solar energy holds significant potential for addressing future energy and environmental challenges. Concurrently, hydrogen (H2), as a clean and renewable energy carrier, has garnered substantial attention. Photoelectrocatalytic water splitting to produce H2represents an emerging green technology for converting solar energy into hydrogen energy, which has been highly valued by researchers. The key to advancing this technology lies in identifying photoelectrode materials with high catalytic activity and stability. In this study, dendritic α-Fe was synthesized via electrodeposition at the optimal potential of −1.4 V vs. Ag/AgCl for 300 s, and the photoelectrocatalytic performance of α-Fe2O3@Fe was enhanced through partial oxidation annealing at 300 °C for 6 h. This approach effectively addressed the issue of the short carrier transport distance in α-Fe2O3. The resulting partially oxidized α-Fe2O3@Fe(300 °C, 6 h) exhibited a photocurrent density of 281.1 μA/cm2at +0.55 V vs. Ag/AgCl, which was 2.23 times higher than that of the fully oxidized dendritic α-Fe2O3(500 °C, 2 h) (125.8 μA/cm2). The influence of deposition potential on photoelectrocatalytic performance was systematically explored, and the optimal deposition potential was identified. Additionally, surface modification with 0.15 wt% Pt (ultra-low loading) was employed to further improve the photocatalytic stability of α-Fe2O3(500 °C, 2 h). After continuous operation for 2 h, the photocurrent of the surface-modified sample decreased by only 6.5%, indicating a substantial enhancement in stability.

In this paper, a facile route has been developed to prepare magnetic trimetallic Au-Ag-γ-Fe2O3/rGO nanocomposites. The impact of the preparation method (the intensity of reductant) on the catalytic performance was investigated. The nanocomposites were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The prepared nanocomposites show fine catalytic activity towards the reduction reaction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP). The nanocomposites also have superparamagnetism at room temperature, which can be easily separated from the reaction systems by applying an external magnetic field.

Electrochemical water–gas shift (EWGS) reaction is an emerging technology with energy-saving and environmental-friendly advantages to produce high-purity hydrogen form the waste gas containing CO. However, it remains a significant challenge to design superior activity and highly durable EWGS electrocatalysts, particularly with low content of noble metals. Herein, a series of Pt-xCu/Fe 2 O 3 (x = 0, 2, 5) catalysts are synthesized by the complexation precipitation method to construct coupling sites between Pt and CuOx, aiming to optimize the adsorption of CO and the activation of OH – . The obtained 2.5Pt-2Cu/Fe 2 O 3 catalyst presents a unique Pt-O-Cu structure, delivering a much lowest onset potential, high specific activity, and excellent mass activity (1.5 A·mg Pt -1 ) at 0.73 V ( vs. RHE), which is over 15 and 3 times that of commercial Pt/C (20%) and unmodified Pt/Fe 2 O 3 catalyst, respectively. Meanwhile, the in-situ X-ray absorption results demonstrate that the facilitated interaction among the Pt-O-Cu structure promotes the high durability of the 2.5Pt-2Cu/Fe 2 O 3 catalyst and the operability at high potential. More importantly, the moderate binding of CO and moderate activation of OH* are suggested for boosting the reactivity in the CO electro-oxidation reaction. In particular, the fabricated Pt||2.5Pt-2Cu/Fe 2 O 3 , employed in coupling the HER and CO electro-oxide reaction, shows a remarkable hydrogen production of about 98 mmol H2 ·h −1 ·mg Pt −1 at 0.8 V ( vs. RHE). This work also definitely confirms the possibility of the catalyst being applied to produce hydrogen under practical conditions with different concentrations of CO, even being applied in the purification of trace CO in a hydrogen-rich atmosphere.

Exogenous contaminants often co-occur in waste-activated sludge (WAS), but their potential mutual interactions and joint effects on the WAS treatment are less concerning. This work revealed that surfactants induced and aggravated the toxicity of Fe2O3 nanoparticles (NPs) in volatile fatty acids (VFAs)’ biosynthesis during WAS anaerobic fermentation. The VFA production exhibited a 40.1 and 20.3% inhibition compared to the individual LAS and CTAB reactors, respectively. A mechanistic exploration implied that the WAS solubilization, hydrolysis, and acidification steps during VFA generation were restrained. Moreover, the Fe2O3 NPs’ and surfactants’ coexistence suppressed the acid-forming bacteria (i.e., Saprospiraceae_uncultured, Bacteroidetes vadinHA17_norank) and the homologous metabolic functions responsible for substrate hydrolysis (e.g., malZ and pepD), intracellular metabolism (e.g., pfkA and gdhA), VFAs’ biosynthesis (e.g., bkdA and ackA), and ATP generation (e.g., atpE and atpH), resulting ultimately in VFAs’ reduction. Furthermore, the surfactants contributed to the dispersibility of coexisting Fe2O3 NPs to maintain the high reactivity of NPs. Besides, the WAS disintegration triggered by surfactants increased the interactions between Fe2O3 NPs and microorganisms, thereby aggravating toxicity. Our study provides novel insights into environmental behaviors of co-occurring contaminants in the anaerobic environment and provides in-depth guidance for practical WAS treatment.

The development of flexible room-temperature gas sensors is important in environmental monitoring and protection. In this contribution, by using 1-octadecanethiol (ODT) as a surface ligand, Au nanodots (NDs) with ultra-small size of ∼1.7 nm were deposited on the surface of α-Fe2O3/reduced graphene oxide (rGO). The Au ND–ODT/α-Fe2O3/rGO composite was fabricated into flexible gas sensors, which could detect NO2 gas down to 200 ppb at room temperature. Compared with α-Fe2O3/rGO, Au ND–ODT/α-Fe2O3/rGO showed enhanced sensing performance because of the beneficial effects of Au NDs, including facilitating the adsorption of NO2 molecules and forming ohmic-like contact with rGO and α-Fe2O3. In addition, the sensing performance of the composite was also influenced by the surface ligands of the Au NDs. Ligands with less polar terminal groups were found to be beneficial to charge transfer in the sensing film. Moreover, Au ND–ODT/α-Fe2O3/rGO-based flexible sensors showed negligible performance deterioration under moderately bent conditions, suggesting their potential to be used in portable and wearable devices.

CuO-Fe 2 O 3 /MXene was fabricated using a rapid microwave hydrothermal method and used for the enhanced peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation and atrazine (ATZ) degradation. The ATZ degradation rate could reach up to nearly 100% within 60 min at pH = 6.4, with low dosage for CuO-Fe 2 O 3 /5% MXene (0.1 g‧L -1 ) and PMS (0.37 mM). Experimental results and DFT calculations showed that coexisting matter had little influence on ATZ degradation at low concentrations, indicating the excellent anti-interference capability of the system. Circulation and interaction of ≡Fe(III)/≡Fe(II) and ≡Cu(II)/≡Cu(I) produced SO 4 •- and •OH, O* and SO 5 •- could participate in the formation of 1 O 2 . Then, ATZ degradation pathways, including dealkylation, dichlorination-hydroxylation, alkyl hydroxylation, alkyl oxidation, olefination, and deamination-hydroxylation processes, were proposed based on DFT calculations and ESI-QTOF-MS/MS data. QSAR analysis illustrated that most intermediates were more environmentally friendly than ATZ. This study developed novel materials with superior catalytic performance for elimination of refractory organic pollutants in wastewater.

The efficiency of water electrolysis is greatly hindered by complex electron-proton transfer process of oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Exploiting cost-efficient OER electrocatalytic materials to improve the performance of overall water splitting is necessary. Partial chemical etching of iron foam (IF) with glacial acetic acid, using IF as the metal source and substrate, to form vertically aligned FeS/Fe 2 O 3 heterogeneous nanosheets on the IF (FeS/Fe 2 O 3 /IF) can obtain a hierarchical electrode to meet the above requirements. The nanosheets with heterogeneous interfaces in situ grown on IF can adjust electronic structure and expose more active sites, resulting in great improvement of catalytic activity and stability. FeS/Fe 2 O 3 /IF requires a small overpotential of 266.5 mV to attain 10 mA cm −2 and its Tafel slope is 51.17 mV dec −1 . It is worth noting that FeS/Fe 2 O 3 /IF can work continuously for 50 h at high current density, which proves the strong stability during the OER process. The FeS/Fe 2 O 3 /IF has high electrocatalytic activity and stability, and can be used as a good candidate material for electrocatalytic OER in industrial manufacture.

In this work, an atomic-layer Fe 2 O 3 -modified two-dimensional (2D) porphyrinic metal-organic framework (MOF) was prepared (2D MOF-Fe 2 O 3 ), which exhibits unique interfacial electron-withdrawing effect via charge transfer pathways from Zn 2 O 8 and C-O bonds to Fe-O bonds. Concretely, the atomic-layer Fe 2 O 3 is deposited on 2D porphyrinic MOF (ZnTCPP) by atomic layer deposition technique to enhance the photocatalytic performance and the subsequent bacteria-killing efficacy. After 20 min light irradiation, the photocatalytic antibacterial efficacy of 2D MOF-Fe 2 O 3 can reach up to 99.9%. The underlying mechanism of enhanced photocatalytic activity is that the heterointerface between 2D MOF and Fe 2 O 3 can facilitate the transfer of lots of photogenerated electrons from 2D MOF to Fe 2 O 3 , where 2D MOF and Fe 2 O 3 act as electronic donator and receptor, respectively. This work provides an insight into developing highly effective photocatalysts by using electron-withdrawing modulator to optimize charge transfer pathway.
