Cu/Fe3O4 catalyst for water gas shift reaction: Insight into the effect of Fe2+ and Fe3+ distribution in Fe3O4

Chongqi Chen,Hongju Ren,Jianke Zhou,Yu Luo,Yingying Zhan,Chaktong Au,Xingyi Lin,Lilong Jiang

Two precursors, namely, p -CFO- T (tetragonal) and p -CFO- C (cubic), were fabricated by a sol-gel method via citric acid and poly(vinyl alcohol) complexation, respectively. After H 2 -reduction, the two were converted to Cu/Fe 3 O 4 catalysts of different complexions, which are named as CFO-CA and CFO-PVA, respectively. The distribution of Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ in the Cu/Fe 3 O 4 catalysts was studied by Raman and XPS techniques. It was disclosed that the distribution of Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ in Fe 3 O 4 has an effect on Cu–Fe 3 O 4 interaction and catalyst surface basicity . Compared to CFO-PVA, CFO-CA has a larger amount of Fe 3+ , which mostly sits at the octahedral sites, leading to stronger Cu–Fe 3 O 4 interaction, and a larger amount of catalyst surface sites that are of weak basicity. As a result, the critical elementary steps of WGS reaction , viz. water dissociation, –COOH decomposition and CO 2 desorption are promoted as reflected in the lower E a and higher catalytic activity of CFO-CA.

Synthesis of a water-soluble copolyacrylamide bearing rhodamine B derivative and its selective detection of Fe3+ in aqueous solution

Xueyan Liu,Lingxiao Li,An Chen,Chengyou Kan,Jianhong Xu

A polymerizable rhodamine-based monomer 2-(3-(2-(3′,6′-bis(diethylamino)-3-oxospiro[isoindoline-1,9′-xanthen]-2-yl)ethyl)ureido)ethyl acrylate (RhBUEA) is first designed and synthesized, and then used in the preparation of a new water-soluble P(AM-co-RhBUEA) through precipitation polymerization of it with acrylamide (AM). Influence of the RhBUEA content on the polymerization process is investigated, and the chemical structure and composition of the copolymers are confirmed by FTIR and UV–vis spectral analysis. According to the off-on switch between spirolactam and ring-opened form of rhodamine derivative, P(AM- co -RhBUEA) prepared with 15 wt.% RhBUEA exhibits a highly sensitive and selective recognition towards Fe 3+ in aqueous solution with 0.073 μM of detection limit, accompanied with a remarkable spectral and color change. Furthermore, the spectral response is reversible by the alternating addition of Fe 3+ and EDTA to the copolymer, and the test strips prepared by P(AM-co-RhBUEA) can detect Fe 3+ colorimetrically and portably, which makes the water-soluble polymer a promising Fe 3+ sensor in the field of on-site detection.

Internal–External Stabilization Strategies Enable Ultrastable and Highly Luminescent CsPbBr3 Perovskite Nanocrystals for Aqueous Fe3+ Detection and Information Encryption

Jie Guan,Ying-zhuo Shen,Yun Shu,Dangqin Jin,Qin Xu,Xiao-Ya Hu

The high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs) makes them promising candidates in optoelectronics. However, the easy loss of structural integrity and fast chemical degradation upon exposure to moisture influence their reliable applications in aqueous solutions. Here, a hierarchical surface construction strategy is rationally designed to fulfill an internal–external stabilization of PNCs. Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) have been demonstrated stabilized PNCs internally by eliminating the proton transfer-induced ligand desorption. Meanwhile, CTAB acts as a cationic surfactant in consolidating the subsequent SiO 2 coating to prevent the PNCs from external environments. Based on the resulted PNCs, a sensitive and selective fluorescence film sensor for Fe 3+ detection is successfully constructed. The fluorescence of PNCs at 525 nm is quenched after the addition of Fe 3+ in the concentration range from 770 p m to 411 µ m . As Fe 3+ ions attached to the surface of the film are removed with water, the fluorescence of the film can be easily recovered. Owing to this character, the application of the PNCs toward the confidential information encryption has been proved. This work provides an effective design strategy to improve the stability of PNCs and extends their applications in sensing and encryption areas.

Novel thin-film composite membrane with polydopamine-modified polyethylene support and tannic acid-Fe3+ interlayer for forward osmosis applications

Fangkun Xiao,Haochen Ge,Yanyi Wang,Shengjun Bian,Yunbo Tong,Congjie Gao,Guiru Zhu

Polyethylene (PE) has recently gained attention as an advantageous support material in forward osmosis (FO) owing to its low structural parameters. A novel thin-film composite (TFC) membrane for FO was fabricated by introducing a tannic acid (TA)-Fe 3+ interlayer on a polydopamine (PDA)-modified PE support via interfacial polymerization. The TA-Fe 3+ interlayer influenced the diffusion of m -phenylenediamine, causing a unique worm-like morphology of the polyamide (PA) layer, distinct from the traditional “ridge and valley” morphology. Worm-like structures provided more permeation sites and improved the water flux (71.2 L⋅m −2 ⋅h −1 ). Furthermore, the TA-Fe 3+ interlayer prevented some salt molecules from passing through and resulted in a low specific salt flux (0.03 g⋅L −1 ). The TA-Fe 3+ interlayer was the key to overcoming the trade-off between permeability and selectivity. It functioned as a bridge connecting the PA layer and the PDA-modified PE support through chemical bonding, and the adhesion strength between PA layer and PDA-modified PE support was enhanced. This resulted in the excellent stability of the obtained TFC membrane. This study presents a new method for the design of a TFC membrane with excellent perm-selectivity and manipulatable morphologies of the PA layer for FO applications.

Significance of Activated Carbon Fiber as Cathode in Electro/Fe3+/Peroxydisulfate Oxidation Process for Removing Carbamazepine in Aqueous Environment

Shiqiang Han,Shabi Ul Hassan,Yunhua Zhu,Shuai Zhang,Hongguang Liu,Sen Zhang,Junfeng Li,Zhaoyang Wang,Chun Zhao

To remove carbamazepine (CBZ) from aqueous environment, the method of using activated carbon fiber as a cathode with enhanced electric/ferric iron/peroxydisulfate (ACF-E/Fe3+/PDS) process was studied. The highest CBZ removal ratio of 97.76% was achieved in 30 min, which was unchanged after 10 cycles of ACF in the ACF-E/Fe3+/PDS process. Meanwhile, the concentration of total iron ions in the effluent decreased as it was deposited on the ACF surface. The results of free radical inhibition experiments revealed that sulfate radical (SO4–•) played the leading role in the removal of CBZ. Compared with the E/Fe3+/PDS process, the electrical energy consumption was significantly reduced by 8 times in the ACF-E/Fe3+/PDS process. In addition, the toxicities of CBZ and its byproducts were reduced in the ACF-E/Fe3+/PDS process by the toxicity test. Therefore, the ACF-E/Fe3+/PDS process can be used as a sustainable, efficient, and low-toxicity method for the treatment of pollutants in water.

Green synthesis of up- and down-conversion photoluminescent carbon dots from coffee beans for Fe3+ detection and cell imaging

Wanyu Zhang,Lihua Jia,Xiangfeng Guo,Rui Yang,Yu Zhang,Zhenlong Zhao

Carbon dots (CDs) are a developing stable, conductive, and environmentally friendly fluorescent nanomaterial with potential applications in biomedicine and sensing. In this study, CDs with up- and down-conversion photoluminescence characteristics were prepared via a one-pot hydrothermal method using coffee beans as the sole raw material. Fourier transform infrared spectra and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed the presence of nitrogen and oxygen functional groups on the CDs surfaces. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the CDs were spherical with an average size of 4.6 nm. The CDs precursor and synthesis process are environmentally benign, and the resulting CDs exhibit excellent photostability, reversible fluorescence response to temperature, and good ionic-strength tolerance. Moreover, these CDs can be used as efficient fluorescence probes in selective and sensitive Fe3+ detection by a dual-readout assay. The down- and up-conversion fluorescence measurements from the CDs were in the linear range for 0–0.10 mM Fe3+ with the detection limits of 15.4 and 16.3 nM, respectively. Furthermore, the CDs were successfully applied to intracellular sensing and imaging Fe3+ ions, indicating their potential use in bioscience applications.

Characterization of phosphorus species distribution in waste activated sludge after anaerobic digestion and chemical precipitation with Fe3+ and Mg2+

Lin Li,Heliang Pang,Junguo He,Jie Zhang

Given the great concern about phosphorus (P) resource depletion, it’s promising to recover P from waste activated sludge (WAS) especially for agricultural application. To this end, it’s necessary to understand the P speciation and fractionation within the sludge before and after stabilization and precipitation. In this study, we systematically studied P species and distribution within WAS after anaerobic digestion and chemical precipitation using liquid state 31 P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, sequential extraction method as well as XRD Technology. P transformation and bioavailability were also discussed with the obtained results. Inorganic P was found to be dominant in WAS before (67.6%) and after digestion (77.2%). Vivianite seems to dominate among the P-containing minerals both in the raw and digested sludge from XRD spectra. In the NMR spectra, the orthophosphate (Ortho-P) and polyphosphate (Poly-P) were two dominant species in the raw sludge. However, the Poly-P peak vanished after anaerobic digestion, indicating Poly-P was released and degraded under anaerobic environment. Fe 3+ addition and Mg 2+ addition with pH adjustment displayed comparable P removal efficiencies. No significant differences on P distribution by sequential extraction test was observed after P precipitation. Considering that no pH adjustment was needed, it might be more cost efficient to recover P by iron addition.

Highly luminescent N-doped carbon dots from black soya beans for free radical scavenging, Fe3+ sensing and cellular imaging

Jing Jia,Bo Lin,Yifang Gao,Yuan Jiao,Lei Li,Chuan Dong,Shaomin Shuang

The novel N doped carbon dots (N-CDs) were readily fabricated through one-step pyrolysis method from black soya beans. The obtained N-CDs possessed excellent photoluminescence properties with quantum yield of 38.7 ± 0.64% and dual responsive properties towards free radical and Fe 3+ . The N-CDs exhibited favorable radical scavenging activity (RSA) against 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and superoxide anion radicals . Fe 3+ could induce photoluminescence quenching of N-CDs through static quenching characteristics. The possible quenching mechanism was presented. Combining with negligible toxicity and preferable biocompatibility, the N-CDs were extended to imaging intracellular Fe 3+ . As an attractive candidate, the N-CDs demonstrated a great potential in free radical scavenging, sensing and cellular imaging.

Intermolecular hydrogen bonding-mediated synthesis of high-quality photoluminescent carbon dots for label-free fluorometric detection of Fe3+ ions

Bisang Chen,Feiming Li,Liling Zou,Dejian Chen

Hydrogen bonding interactions guided supramolecular self-assembly has been widely studied, which played important roles in the field of nanotechnology and nanodevices. Herein, an effective intermolecular hydrogen bonding mediated heating-up synthesis of high-quality fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) is developed based on hydrogen-bonding between trimesic acid and urea. Upon optimizing the hydrogen-bonding interaction, high quality of CDs with high monodispersity and stability could be obtained. Besides, these CDs could be used for sensitive and specific detection of ferric ions. The novel strategy may pave a new way in molecular engineering for the fabrication of high quality of CDs.

A novel near-infrared “turn-on” fluorescent probe for selective detection of Fe3+ and its application in vitro imaging

Xiaofei Gu,Xiuxuan Zhang,Zhe Liu,Yu Cheng,Fulong Ma,Yanpeng Dai,Tianzi Xue,Yu Zheng,Zhengjian Qi

A novel near-infrared fluorescent probe RHCC was devised and synthesized. It exhibits high specificity to Fe 3+ compared to other metals in aqueous solutions. The detection limit of RHCC was 1.2 × 10 −7 M and the complexation stability constant was 5.807 × 10 4 M −1 . The binding ratio of RHCC and Fe 3+ was 1:1 which was measured through MS, FTIR and Job's plot. The energy gap between HOMO and LUMO of RHCC was 3.22 eV, while RHCC- Fe 3+ complex was 0.95 eV. This result means the binding of probe RHCC and Fe 3+ lowers the RHCC- Fe 3+ complex's energy gap and makes it more stable. What's more, in living cells and zebrafishes studies, probe RHCC was no significant cytotoxic effect, indicating it could monitor Fe 3+ in biological system.

A High Sensitivity Electrochemical Sensor Based on Fe3+-Ion Molecularly Imprinted Film for the Detection of T-2 Toxin

Xing Gao,Wenying Cao,Miaomiao Chen,Huayu Xiong,Xiuhua Zhang,Shengfu Wang

The excellent detection sensitivity in various matrices of T-2 toxin (T-2), which has cytotoxic and immunosuppressive effects in DNA and RNA synthesis, is a highly desirable characteristic. A sensitive molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensor was constructed for the selective detection of T-2. In this study, iron ions (Fe 3+ ) were introduced to increase the chelation of the metal ions and templates for preparing molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs). With the increased chelation of the metal ions and templates, the selectivity and sensitivity of the MIPs were effectively improved. The imprinted sensor was successfully employed to detect T-2 in cereals and human serum samples.
