Modulating the release of Cu(I) ions from copper-based antifoulants is of notable engineering and scientific importance. However, this approach remains challenging because of a lack of valence-stabilizing protection strategies for Cu(I) sites and the poorly characterized releasing behavior of Cu(I) ions. To address these issues, a novel multivalent antifoulant Cu(I, II)-metal–organic framework (Cu(I, II)-BTC; BTC: 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate) was synthesized via an in situ reduction of Cu(II)-BTC under mild conditions. The framework structure of Cu(I, II)-BTC was examined in detail using X-ray diffraction, N 2 sorption analysis, and transmission electron microscopy–selected-area electron diffraction. For the first time, the release behavior of Cu(I) from Cu(I, II)-BTC submerged in seawater was characterized by ultraviolet–visible spectrophotometry. The chemical state of the copper sites in the Cu(I, II)-BTC complex was determined before and after submersion in fresh seawater to investigate whether the framework structure facilitated the retention of Cu(I) ions. Further, the bactericidal activity of Cu(I, II)-BTC was evaluated by measuring the intracellular reactive oxygen species levels to reveal the biocidal effect of the released Cu(I) ions. Finally, the antifouling performance of the resulting Cu(I, II)-BTC-based antifouling coating was comprehensively evaluated via laboratory bioassays (using fouling bacteria and barnacle larvae as test organisms) and long-term marine field trials. This study offers viable avenues for designing novel antifoulants and developing an in-depth understanding of the copper-mediated antifouling process.

Thallium (Tl) and its compounds pose significant environmental risks due to their high toxicity and bioaccumulative potential, with industrial discharge standards mandating Tl concentrations below 5 μg/L. This study addresses the underexplored challenge of removing trace Tl(I) (≤1 mg/L) by investigating the efficacy of zinc sulfide (ZnS) as an adsorbent. Batch experiments, complemented by kinetic analyses (pseudo-second-order model), isotherm studies (Langmuir model, Qmax = 34.7 mg/g), and multi-technique characterization, were conducted to evaluate adsorption performance. Results show that ZnS achieves >99.9 % removal of trace Tl(I) at pH 10, reducing effluent concentrations to <0.4 μg/L—well below regulatory limits. Mechanistic investigations reveal a synergistic pathway: electrostatic attraction to negatively charged hydroxylated ZnS surfaces (zeta potential = −15.4 mV at pH 10), surface complexation via ≡ Zn-O-Tl bonds, and gradual formation of crystalline Tl₂S precipitates over prolonged contact. A two-stage treatment strategy, integrating sodium sulfide precipitation with ZnS adsorption, effectively purifies real-world matrices, including Tl-contaminated rainwater (Tl(I) from 352 μg/L to 0.440 μg/L) and high-salt industrial effluent (Tl(I) from 55.0 mg/L to 0.330 μg/L). This work provides experimental evidence for ZnS as a viable adsorbent for trace Tl(I) remediation, supporting the development of cost-effective heavy metal removal technologies.

Perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) employing CsPbX 3 nanocrystals (NCs) face persistent challenges in balancing emission efficiency and spectral stability due to surface halide vacancies, which trigger nonradiative recombination, halide phase segregation, and self-doping effects. In this work, we address these limitations by introducing 3,5-dicarboxyphenylboronic acid (3,5-DA) as a multifunctional bidentate ligand additive. The unique coordination architecture of 3,5-DA, featuring multiple chelating groups, enables strong binding affinity to perovskite NC surfaces. This interaction effectively passivates halide vacancies while suppressing ion migration and defect formation. The optimized CsPb(Br/I) 3 NCs exhibit enhanced stability and suppressed nonradiative losses, enabling high-performance white LEDs (WLEDs). At a driving current of 10 mA, the fabricated WLEDs demonstrate a luminous efficiency of 10.32 lm·W −1 , a CIE coordinate of (0.3379, 0.3391), a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 5260 K, and an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 6.48 %. This work provides a ligand engineering strategy to concurrently resolve efficiency-stability trade-offs in PeLEDs.

PbTe-based thermoelectric materials are promising for mid-temperature waste heat recovery, yet n-type PbTe underperforms its p-type counterpart. Herein, high-performance n-type PbTe is achieved through I/Ge co-doping and in-situ composite engineering with Sb 2 Te 3 prepared by melting combined spark plasma sintering. Sb 2 Te 3 alloying introduce in-situ formed Sb/Sb 2 Te 3 precipitates. Furthermore, iodine doping optimizes the carrier concentration to ∼3.4 × 10 19 cm –3 , boosting the room-temperature electrical conductivity to ∼1404 S cm −1 and yielding a high power factor of ∼17.4 μW cm −1 K −2 for the PbTe-Sb 2 Te 3 sample. Meanwhile, lattice thermal conductivity is synergistically suppressed to ∼0.37 W m –1 K –1 at 673 K through Ge-induced point defects/off-center anharmonicity and Sb/Sb 2 Te 3 precipitates. This synergistic strategy results in a peak ZT of ∼1.30 at 823 K and a high average ZT of ∼0.91 at 323–823 K. This work demonstrates that synergistic I/Ge co-doping and composite precipitation effectively enhance thermoelectric performance in n-type PbTe.

Age-related memory decline is a hallmark of brain aging and a primary risk factor for neurodegenerative disorders. Microglia play a crucial role in preserving memory function by maintaining brain homeostasis through phagocytosis, yet the specific mechanisms governing this protective function remain elusive. In the present study, we identified a population of Secreted Phosphoprotein 1 (Spp1)-positive microglia in both aged mouse and human brains. To investigate the role of microglial Spp1 in aging, we generated microglia-specific Spp1 knockout (Spp1-cKO) mice. We demonstrate that Spp1 deficiency selectively precipitates memory deficits in aged mice, without affecting memory function in young mice, indicating an age-dependent reliance on Spp1 signaling. Microglial phagocytic capacity positively correlates with Spp1 levels and is diminished by Spp1 deficiency. Mechanistically, Spp1 deficiency leads to the downregulation of the AKT/mitochondrial complex I pathway, thereby compromising microglial oxidative phosphorylation and function. Notably, microglia-specific overexpression of Spp1 partially ameliorates the age-related phenotypes induced by Spp1 deficiency. In conclusion, this study is the first to reveal the crucial role of microglial Spp1 in brain aging and to uncover its underlying mechanism, providing novel insights into age-related memory decline.

The relationship between pectin side chains and fermentability is crucial for understanding precision nutrition. In this study, α-L-arabinofuranosidase and β-galactosidase were used to remove arabinose and galactose side chains of citrus pectin. Effects of RG-I side chains on structural characteristics and in vitro fermentation property of pectin were investigated. The removal of arabinose and galactose side chains led to a decrease in molecular weight and branching degree of pectin, which in turn resulted in a loose spatial conformation. Based on correlation analysis and carbohydrate-active enzymes annotation, we concluded that the presence of arabinose in citrus pectin promoted the production of propionate and had no promoting effect on the proliferation of pathogenic bacteria of Escherichia and Klebsiella . The removal of the galactose side chain promoted proliferation of potentially beneficial bacteria ( Bifidobacterium , Faecalibacterium , Veillonella , and Parabacteroides ). We further found that arabinose produced propionate mainly via the succinate pathway and acrylate pathway, while galactose generated butyrate by activating phosphate butyryltransferase and butyrate kinase. Our results provide new insights into structure-function relationship between arabinose and galactose side chains and fermentability of pectin, while also offering a scientific reference for targeted design of pectin prebiotics with precise functionalities.

In recent years, the study of Cu (Ӏ) precursors in high-performance CdTe thin-film solar cell devices has received increasing attention. However, few studies have been reported on nanoscale Cu (I) precursors in large-area CdTe devices (≥1 cm 2 ). Here, three different Cu (Ӏ) nano precursors have been rapidly prepared by solution method (CuCl ethanol solution, CuI acetonitrile solution, and CuSCN aqueous ammonia solution) and their effects on the performance of commercial large-area CdTe thin-film solar cells have been investigated. The results show that the distribution amount and uniformity of the nano precursor particles on the CdTe back surface have a large impact on the device performance. The CuCl nanoparticles are more uniformly distributed and the device performance is more excellent. CuI nanoparticles easily formed clusters at grain boundaries. Denser distribution of CuSCN nanoparticles . The thermal diffusion conditions (temperature, time and precursor concentration) have a significant effect on the device performance, but the most reasonable thermal diffusion conditions tend to be the same for all devices. This suggests that the thermal diffusion conditions are determined by the nature of the CdTe absorber layer itself and are not interfered by different nano precursors.

Birefringent crystals are the key components of functional optics, contributing significantly to scientific and technological advancements. To enhance birefringence, the presence of stereochemically active lone pairs offers a unique opportunity. In fact, strengthening the stereochemical activity and aligning uniformly lone pairs face tough challenges. Herein, an anisotropic layered crystal, Sb4O5I2, is discovered to exhibit enhanced birefringence. The influence of crystal symmetry on the birefringence of Sb4O5X2 (X = Cl, Br, or I) is found to be minor. Instead, the asymmetric nature of ABUCBs (i.e., cis-X3[SbO3]6– and cis-X3[SbO4]8–) plays a crucial role in enhancing the optical anisotropy. And the orientation of these ABUCBs is equally important. We demonstrate that by adjusting the Sb/I ratio from 5:1 to 2:1, all of the intralayer Sb atoms in Sb5O7I-P63 are forced onto the surface position. This structural adjustment leads to strengthened ionic bonding interactions, enhanced activity of the lone pairs, and uniform alignments of the ABUCBs in Sb4O5I2. Consequently, this results in a 6-fold increase in birefringence.

Highly emissive three-coordinate copper halide complexes with a bidentate phosphine ligand have attracted attention. Here, a series of three-coordinate mono- and dinuclear copper halide complexes, [CuI(dpbp)2] (1) and [CuX(dpbp)]2 (dpbp = 2-(diphenylphosphino)biphenyl, X = Br (2), Cl (3)), were synthesized, and their molecular structures and photophysical properties were investigated. In the solid state, these complexes exhibit green photoluminescence with microsecond lifetimes (λmax = 515–538 nm; τ = 11.8–19.1 μs) at 298 K. The emission of the complexes originates from the (σ + X) → π* transition. All three complexes displayed good thermal stability.

In this study, double S-scheme heterojunctions were constructed by a simple hydrothermal and calcination method, accompanied by the special layered structure of BiOIO3 employed for its I- modification. This resulted in the formation of CeO2/[Bi6O6(OH)3](NO3)3·1.5H2O (BHN)/I--BiOIO3, which possesses double S-scheme heterojunctions. The improvement of photocatalytic degradation efficiency is derived from the result of the synergistic effect of double S-scheme heterojunctions and I- modification. In photocatalytic degradation experiment with norfloxacin as the target pollutant, the degradation efficiency of typical sample (CeO2/BHN/I--BiOIO3-2) reaches 97.50%, which is 9 times and 1.6 times than that of pure CeO2 and BHN/BiOIO3, respectively. Obviously, the CeO2/BHN/I--BiOIO3 double S-scheme heterojunctions significantly enhances its photocatalytic degradation ability of antibiotics in comparison to single-substance photocatalysts and simple two-phase composite. It is noteworthy that the CeO2/BHN/I--BiOIO3 double S-scheme heterojunctions are also capable of achieving a degradation rate of up to 70% for norfloxacin in river water. Furthermore, this double S-scheme heterojunctions demonstrate the degradation efficiencies of approximately 90% for quinolone antibiotics, including ofloxacin, enrofloxacin, ciprofloxacin, and norfloxacin. This research offers a novel approach to enhance the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants through double S-scheme heterojunctions and elemental modification.

As a key biomarker in clinical diagnostics, cardiac troponin I facilitates the early diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction. This study developed a rapid quantitative method for detecting cardiac troponin I in blood, aiming to establish its quantitative correlation with myocardial infarction area by accurately quantifying the serum cTnI concentration in patients suffering from acute myocardial infarction. We utilized a cTnI-specific aptamer as the recognition element. Gold nanoparticles exhibit salt-induced aggregation with visible color change. The aptamer protects gold nanoparticles from high-salt aggregation. Through systematic optimization, we established a gold nanoparticle-based colorimetric assay leveraging this anti-aggregation mechanism. Results demonstrated that under optimal conditions—200 mM NaCl and 800 nM aptamer concentration—the developed assay exhibited a promising linear response (R 2 = 0.942) across a cardiac troponin I concentration spanning from 0.1 to 0.8 μg/mL. According to the standard calibration method, the detection limit was estimated as 0.1 μg/mL. We observed recovery rates ranging from 105.6 % to 118.5 %. This research presents a highly sensitive, specific, and rapid point-of-care detection methodology for cardiac troponin I, offering enhanced field-testing efficiency and providing a low-cost alternative for serum cardiac troponin I detection. Moreover, it lays the groundwork for the development of a novel methodology enabling dynamic and quantitative assessment of infarct size in patients suffering from myocardial infarction.

Methimazole (MMI), which is primarily known as an antithyroid drug, has received considerable attention for its potent antioxidant properties in a copper(I)-mediated Fenton reaction. However, the antioxidant mechanistic details of MMI, particularly its structural analogy to the natural antioxidant ergothioneine (both of which feature an imidazole-2-thione moiety), remain largely unexplored due to the difficulty of in situ characterizing unstable reaction intermediates. In this study, we combined an in situ reactor-integrated paper-in-tip spray ionization source with mass spectrometry (PTSI-MS) to probe the protection mechanisms of MMI against the CuI-catalyzed Fenton reaction online. We present direct MS evidence of the antioxidant mechanisms of MMI (M) in its reduced form (MSH) and oxidized disulfide form (MSSM). The former can directly sequester H2O2 (i.e., a H2O2 scavenging mechanism). The latter tightly coordinates with CuI to form a CuI-MSSM complex that stabilizes CuI and prevents its oxidation by H2O2 and thus the formation of •OH (i.e., a metal ion coordination mechanism). The proposed reaction pathway of the CuI complexes from MMI disulfide (CuI-MSSM, m/z = 289 and 291) to MMI thiosulfonate (CuI-MSO2SM, m/z = 321 and 323) to MMI monosulfide (CuI-MSM, m/z 257 and 259) was verified by S–S oxidation, SO2–S bond cleavage, and extruded sulfur elimination, which confirmed the stable N,N′-bidentate binding of CuI to these intermediates, even when attacked by H2O2. These findings challenge the traditional radical scavenging mechanism and contribute to our understanding of the relationship between the structure and antioxidant activity of imidazole-2-thiones. Furthermore, the established in situ reactor-integrated PTSI-MS approach provides unique insights into reaction dynamics, offering the advantages of simplicity, speed, and low reaction volume (down to 20 μL).
