Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), originating from anthropogenic and natural sources, are highly concerned environmental pollutants. This study investigated the impact of two model PAHs (pyrene and phenanthrene) on bacterial community succession in the seagrass meadows sediment in a lab-scale microcosm. Halophila ovalis sediment slurry microcosms were established, one group was placed as a control, and the other two were treated with pyrene and phenanthrene. Bacterial community succession in response to respective PAHs was investigated by 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. The results demonstrated that bacterial diversity decrease in each microcosm during the incubation process; however, the composition of bacterial communities in each microcosm was significantly different. Proteobacteria (37–89%), Firmicutes (9–41%), and Bacteroides (7–21%) were the predominant group at the phylum levels. Their abundance varies during the incubation process. Several previously reported hydrocarbon-degrading genera, such as Pseudomonas , Spinghobium , Sphingobacterium , Mycobacterium , Pseudoxanthomonas , Idiomarina , Stenotrophomonas , were detected in higher abundance in pyrene- and phenanthrene-treated microcosms. However, these genera were distinctly distributed in the pyrene and phenanthrene treatments, suggesting that certain bacterial groups favorably degrade different PAHs. Statistical analyses, such as ANOSIM and PERMANOVA, also revealed that significant differences existed among the treatments' bacterial consortia ( P < 0.05). This work showed that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon significantly affects bacterial community succession, and different PAHs might influence the bacterial community succession differently.

Low-purine food is not only the focus of gout patients, but also the focus of contemporary green diet development. Fish are usually considered as high-purine foodstuff because of the high nutritional value and high purine content. Therefore, it is necessary to reduce purine content in fish to ensure that they are suitable for patients with hyperuricemia or gout. In this study, the effect of allicin on purine reduction in turbot during cooking was investigated using high-performance liquid chromatography, and the change of xanthine oxidase (XO) activity was also studied. Molecular docking analysis was further performed to elucidate the mechanism of purine reduction by allicin. The results revealed that in the step of soaking, allicin could reduce purine content in fish by slightly enhancing XO activity, promoting hypoxanthine transformation into xanthine. The removal of total purines in experimental and control group reached 70.45% and 57.20%, respectively. Moreover, allicin could change the thermal stability of xanthine by providing an acidic environment, resulting in the rapid decrease of xanthine and hypoxanthine levels by boiling. Thus, this study provides a simple method to decrease purine levels, suggesting a possibility that allicin can function as a purine remover in food.

The inhibitory activity of taxifolin on three digestive enzymes were investigated in both vitro and vivo. Taxifolin exhibited inhibitory effect on α-glucosidase, α-amylase and pancreatic lipase with IC50 values of 0.038, 0.647 and 0.993 mg/mL, respectively. Inhibitory kinetics indicated that taxifolin was more like a competitive inhibitor of α-glucosidase and α-amylase, while it was a non-competitive inhibitor of pancreatic lipase. The binding of taxifolin caused the quenching of intrinsic fluorescence intensity of enzymes, and the binding constant (lgK a ) and the number of binding site (n) were further calculated through fluorescence titration. The values of lgK a were in the range of 4.93‐6.65, and the values of n were all close to 1. Molecular docking indicated that taxifolin could interact with α-glucosidase and α-amylase through many kinds of secondary interaction, such as hydrogen bond, π-π stack, etc. In vivo study revealed that pre-administration with taxifolin can significantly improve the postprandial hyperglycemia in rat. Furthermore, its can also decrease triglyceride absorption through the inhibition of pancreatic lipase.

To monitor d-glucose (Glu) in complex aqueous media with a high specificity, a conceptually new “selective capture and controllable detection” nanoreactor was explored. We designed and synthesized poly maleic anhydride-styrene-N-isopropylacrylamide-(4-aminophenyl) boronic acid [P(MAn-St-NIPAm-PBA)] to fabricate the nanoreactor. On the surface of the self-assembled, micelle-based nanoreactor, the stereo precise placement PBA provided a recognition unit in the block copolymer structure to boost the selective capture of Glu over other saccharides. P(MAn-St-NIPAm) served as the thermal sensitive moiety of the nanoreactor, which embedded with glucose oxidase and myoglobin-based catalyst in order to realize the controllable enzymolysis of Glu through temperature alteration. Once the nanoreactor was mixed with Glu, an obvious change in the UV–visible intensity of quinine produced in the multienzymolysis was observed. Glu in the rat microdialysates of brain ischemia was successfully monitored by the nanoreactor method, demonstrating the feasibility of constructing high-specificity nanoreactors for cerebral system applications.

Cr (VI), which is a common heavy metal pollutant with strong oxidizing property, exists widely in nature. Organisms can be exposed to Cr (VI) through various means. Cr (VI) causes mitochondrial dysfunction after being absorbed by cells. Whether Cr (VI) induces the selective autophagic degradation of mitochondria, which is a biological process called mitophagy, remains unclear. Mitophagy not only recycles intracellularly damaged mitochondria to compensate for nutrient deprivation but also is involved in mitochondria quality control. Thus, this study investigated whether Cr (VI) could induce mitophagy in DF-1 cells. Carbonyl cyanide m-chlorophenylhydrazone, which is a mitochondrial-uncoupling reagent that induces mitophagy, was used. DF-1 cells were incubated with different doses of Cr (VI) for varying durations. The autophagy-related proteins LC3-II and p62 levels decreased after 6 h of Cr (VI) treatment but recovered within 24 h. The mitochondrial membrane potential, which is an indicator of mitochondrial damage, was detected by flow cytometry. We found that different durations of Cr (VI) treatment induced mitochondrial mass decrease and depolarization. Furthermore, the expression of the protein translocase of outer mitochondrial membrane 20 (TOMM20), which is a mitochondrial outer membrane protein, was decreased significantly in the presence of Cr (VI). Our findings indicate that Cr (VI) may contribute to the mitochondrial morphology and function damage and may therefore lead to the autophagic clearance of mitochondria.

Insect carboxylesterases are major enzymes involved in metabolism of xenobiotics including insecticides. Two carboxylesterase genes, CarE001A and CarE001H, were cloned from the destructive agricultural pest Helicoverpa armigera. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction showed that CarE001A and CarE001H were predominantly expressed in fat body and midgut, respectively; developmental expression analyses found that the expression levels of both CarEs were significantly higher in fifth-instar larvae than in other life stages. Recombinant CarE001A and CarE001H expressed in the Escherichia coli exhibited high enzymatic activity toward α-naphthyl acetate. Inhibition assays showed that organophosphates had strong inhibition on CarEs activity compared to pyrethroids. Metabolism assays indicated that CarE001A and CarE001H were able to metabolize β-cypermethrin and λ-cyhalothrin. Homology modeling and molecular docking analyses demonstrated that β-cypermethrin could fit nicely into the active pocket of both carboxylesterases. These results suggested that CarE001A and CarE001H could play important roles in the detoxification of pyrehtroids in H. armigera.

It is possible to improve the machinability of aluminum nitride-hexagonal boron nitride (AlN-h-BN) ceramics while maintaining high strength and high thermal conductivity. The composite ceramics with 0–30 wt% BN as secondary phase were prepared by hot pressed sintering, using yttrium oxide (Y 2 O 3 ) as sintering aid. The phase composition, density, microstructure, mechanical properties, thermal conductivity, and dielectric properties were investigated. The sintering additives were favorable to purify the grain boundaries and improve densification, reacting with oxide impurities on the surface of raw material powder particles. The optimum BN content improved the flexural strength and fracture toughness of composite ceramics with 475 MPa and 4.86 MPa·m 1/2 , respectively. With increasing the amount of BN, the thermal conductivity and hardness of composites gradually decreased, but the minimum value of thermal conductivity was still 85.6 W·m −1 ·K −1 . The relative dielectric constant and dielectric loss tangent of the samples ranged from 6.8 to 8.3 and from 2.4 × 10 −3 to 6.4 × 10 −3 , respectively, in 22–26 GHz.

Constructing stable structure and efficient ion and electron diffusion pathways are critically important for high-performance anode materials of lithium-ion batteries. Herein, a unique nanocomposite composed of FeO/Fe 2 O 3 (Fe x O y ) nanoparticles in-situ wrapped within porous carbon framework has been successfully fabricated by an extremely facile and relatively green method, namely just calcinating the commercial ferric citrate in Ar atmosphere. Therefore, our strategy for preparing composites with unique structures has advantages of relative green and extreme simple compared with the commonly hydrothermal or solvothermal and followed by carbonization ways due to no use of various solvents and reagents, and additional time-and power-consuming hydrothermal or solvothermal heating treatment. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of Fe x O y nanoparticles and uniquely porous carbon framework, the as-achieved composite possesses robust structural stability and improved electrochemical kinetics. As a result, it exhibits superior lithium storage performance, delivering capacities of 606.4 and 526.6 mAh g −1 at 200 and 1000 mA g −1 after 450 and even 1200 cycles, respectively. Moreover, the advantages of relatively green and extremely facile preparation process, and good lithium storage performance may make this composite a promising anode candidate for next generation of high-performance lithium-ion batteries.

The Co-based spinel nanocrystals were fabricated by thermal decomposition of clay cages comprised with Laponite (LP) that were assembled on ZIF-67 frameworks (LP@ZIF-67). Spinel phases included Co 3 O 4 , FeCo 2 O 4 and MgCo 2 O 4 were produced and encapsulated within the Laponite cages (LP@spinel). The prepared materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), N 2 adsorption-desorption, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and thermogravimetric analyses (TGA). It was indicated that the porous structure of Laponite and ZIF-67 was preserved after annealing at the temperature of ~400 °C. The XPS showed the binding energy of Co 2P in sample of LP@spinel shifted to lower values compared to the Co 3 O 4 which was obtained by annealing the pure phase of ZIF-67, and this demonstrates the catalytically active Co-centers were (220) facet-exposed in spinel nanocrystals. The material LP@spinel shares mesoporous structure with surface area of 135 m 2 ·g − 1 . The LP@spinel was found to exhibit brilliant performance on aerobic oxidation of cyclohexane to get cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol (KA oil). At a preset O 2 pressure of 2.0 MPa, the catalysis showed an outstanding conversion at 17.2% and the selectivity was found to reach 95.3% of KA oil for a typical reaction t = 5.0 h at T = 150 °C.

Tetracyclines (TCs) are frequently detected in agricultural soils worldwide, causing a potential threat to crops and human health. In this study, diffusive gradients in thin films technique (DGT) was used to measure the distribution and exchange rates of three TCs (tetracycline (TC), oxytetracycline (OTC) and chlortetracycline (CTC)) between the solid phase and solution in five farmland soils. The relationship between the accumulated masses with time suggested that TCs consumption in soil solution by DGT would induce the supply from the soil solid phase. The distribution coefficient for the labile antibiotics ( K dl ), response time ( T c ) and desorption/adsorption rates ( k b and k f ) between dissolved and sorbed TCs were derived from the dynamic model of DIFS (DGT induced fluxes in soils). The K dl showed similar sizes of labile solid phase pools for TC and OTC while larger pool sizes were observed for CTC in the soils. Although the concentrations of CTC were lowest in soil solution, the potential hazard caused by continuous release from soil particles could not be ignored. The long response time (>30 min in most cases) suggested that the resupply of TCs from soil solids was limited by their desorption rates (1.26-121 × 10 −6 s −1 ). The soils in finer texture, with higher clay and silt contents (<50 μm) showed a greater potential for TCs release.

Mitomycin C (MMC), naturally synthesized by Streptomyces caespitosus, is a potent antineoplastic antibiotic for the treatment of various solid tumors. However, the defects of conventional MMC injections have greatly limited its clinical application due to its toxic side effects and non-specific interactions. To solve this problem, the PEG2k-Fmoc-Ibuprofen (PEG-FIbu) micellar nanocarrier was synthesized and the MMC-loaded micelles (PEG-FIbu/MMC) were prepared by thin film hydration method and characterized. Ibuprofen was used as a hydrophobic domain of PEG-FIbu nanocarrier, and we expect it to synergize with codelivered MMC in the overall antitumor activity. The in vitro release of PEG-FIbu/MMC was examined by dialysis method using MMC injection as a control. Our data suggested that PEG-FIbu/MMC micelles presented appropriate particle size, low CMC value, good stability, high drug loading efficiency and sustained release properties. In vitro cytotoxicity studies with several tumor cell lines showed that the carrier was effective in mediating intracellular delivery of MMC to tumor cells. In vivo pharmacokinetics, tissue distribution and therapeutic study proved that PEG-FIbu/MMC micelles prolonged blood circulation, significantly improved the tumor accumulation and therapeutic efficacy, and reduced undesirable side effect on normal tissues compared to MMC injection. In general, PEG-FIbu/MMC micelles represented an effective strategy to improve the performance for the delivery of MMC and safety of medication.

In situ catalytic hydrogenolysis of lignin is an efficient method for lignin valorization. Herein, a novel in situ lignin catalytic hydrogenolysis technique in alkaline aqueous solution over a NiAl alloy catalyst under mild conditions was systematically suited. Ni served as the active phase and could be exposed by etching Al atoms with alkaline aqueous solution. Meanwhile, H2 resources could be in situ generated and easily arrived at the adjacent exposed Ni sites to be activated. The in situ lignin hydrogenolysis system exhibits attractive depolymerization results under mild conditions, with an 86.8% conversion degree and 18.9 wt % yield of aromatic monomers at 220 °C, much higher than the traditional hydrogenolysis method using a commercial Raney Ni catalyst under high pressure external H2. The mechanism studies with lignin model compounds suggest that alkaline aqueous solution could promote the cleavage of C–O–C bonds and hinder the hydrogenation of the benzene ring. In addition, a moderate amount of exposed Ni sites as well as rich active hydrogen species are determinant for efficient lignin depolymerization.
