The global cold chain consumes vast amounts of energy and emits greenhouse gases, while many regions lack proper refrigeration. To address this, we developed a dual-layer electrospun membrane (PZ-PML) for energy-free fruit preservation. The top PVDF-HFP/ZIF-8 layer offers 97.64% solar reflectance and 92.5% mid-infrared emissivity, providing 70 W/m 2 radiative cooling. The bottom PAN/MIL-101/LiCl layer, with 2.18 g/g water uptake at 80% RH, delivers ∼156 W/m 2 evaporative cooling, lowering surface temperature by 6.1 °C under ∼400 W/m 2 irradiation. The membrane also shows ⩾99% antibacterial efficiency against E. coli and S. aureus . Applied to strawberries, it reduced dehydration to 20.2% after 9 days, compared to 68.2% and 74.4% in controls. Additionally, it demonstrates durability, superhydrophobicity, and UV stability. This scalable solution offers energy-free fruit cooling, reducing postharvest losses while maintaining quality and safety.

Biofuel is a promising solution for energy crisis and excessive CO 2 emission. Membrane-based pervaporation process enhances biomass fermentation by constantly separating inhibitory bio-alcohols. However, dominating pervaporation membranes often show low permeation flux and inadequate separation factor. Herein we report the engineering fabrication of flexible composite hollow fiber membranes (HFMs) with oriented metal-organic framework (MOF@ZnO) arrays for ethanol-water separation. The epitaxial MOF arrays containing one-dimensional (1D) transport channels was constructed on HFMs, followed by a superhydrophobic and defect-free surface coating. The arrayed structure induces the flow pattern enhancement near the feed-membrane interface and increases mass transfer area, resulting in self-enhancing separation performance. The synergistic effects of the arrayed surface structure and MOF transport channels on separation performance enhancement were revealed by the experimental and simulation results. Impressively, for the composite HFM, the activation energy of ethanol was found to be lower than that of water. When applied to the pervaporation of a 5 wt% ethanol-water mixture, this membrane achieved an ultrahigh flux along with a good separation factor of 10.5. The versatile strategy is suitable for both inner- and outer-selective HFM modules as well as for various membrane materials which exhibit great potential for industrial applications.

Developing highly efficient and robust membrane systems for the selective identification and screening of chiral drugs is an exceptionally challenging task. Herein, we report that functional metal–organic framework (MOF)-packed nanochannels can serve as an excellent chiral recognition platform for enantioselective detection and separation of chiral drugs. Through the precise regulation of the nanoconfinement size and the anchoring of cyclodextrin active sites, the functionalized nanochannel membrane exhibits high enrichment efficiency and enables the highly selective detection of l-penicillamine, as demonstrated by monitoring the transmembrane ionic current signature. Importantly, the engineered nanochannel membrane system can be further utilized for highly efficient racemic penicillamine separation, achieving a remarkable enantiomeric excess (ee) value of up to 89.88%. This research not only puts forward an innovative strategy to establish versatile chiral sieving devices by manipulating the well-defined functional materials but also offers valuable insights for the development of high-performance membranes to meet the demands of chiral drug separation and wide practical applications.

Membranes featuring structural stability and precise ion selectivity are indispensable for efficient lithium recovery from magnesium-rich brines. Despite the promising potential of metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes in ion separation, the flexibility of aromatic linkers in conventional MOF structures often induces pore size fluctuations, which compromises size-based discrimination efficiency. Herein, defect-free Zr-Frustrated Trigonal-symmetry Rotor (Zr-FTR) membranes were fabricated on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrates via a counter-diffusion interfacial growth method. The Zr-FTR framework is constructed with bicyclopentane linkers, whose rigid geometric configuration and substantial torsional energy barriers ensure the retention of a fixed pore aperture (∼4.3 Å). This rigid confinement effect significantly suppresses transient pore expansion, enabling effective ion size sieving while retaining exceptional structural stability. The optimized Zr-FTR-24 membrane exhibits a high Li + permeability of 0.09 mol m −2 h −1 and a Li + /Mg 2+ selectivity of 235, with sustained performance stability over a 7-day continuous operation in mixed-ion solutions. This work establishes a novel design paradigm for suppressing linker dynamics in MOF membranes through rigid linker engineering, ultimately achieving structurally stable and size-exclusive ion transport.

3D-printed polyetheretherketone (PEEK) scaffolds hold great promise for personalized bone repair owing to their excellent mechanical properties and highly tunable porous architectures. However, their intrinsic bioinertness severely limits osseointegration and long-term clinical efficacy. We have developed an innovative bioactive scaffold (SIM@MPSP) by engineering a multifunctional biointerface onto 3D-printed porous PEEK. The biointerface consists of a polydopamine-anchored bimetallic (MgCu) metal-organic framework (MOF) coating that enables efficient loading and sustained release of simvastatin (SIM), Mg 2+ , and Cu 2+ . The coordinated release of these agents creates a therapeutically conducive microenvironment that promotes osteogenesis and angiogenesis, while reprogramming macrophages from a pro-inflammatory M1 phenotype to a pro-regenerative M2 state through modulation of both canonical and non-canonical NF-κB pathways. This immune-regulatory process effectively mitigates inflammation and rescues inflammatory suppression of osteogenesis, thereby establishing a favorable osteoimmunomodulatory niche. SIM@MPSP demonstrated excellent biocompatibility, significantly attenuated foreign-body responses, and enabled robust bone regeneration in in vivo models. Mechanistically, the scaffold facilitates deep bone growth throughout its porous network and forms an interlocked interface with native bone, thereby achieving robust osseointegration. This study presents a powerful biointerface engineering strategy for converting bioinert PEEK into a bioinstructive platform capable of orchestrating coordinated osteogenic, angiogenic, and immunomodulatory responses, thus offering new opportunities for personalized treatment of complex bone defects.

MOF-derived light-responsive micromotors were constructed from ZIF-8@ZIF-67 precursors. • CdS/ZnCoO heterointerfaces improved photoresponse and interfacial charge transfer. • Active motion enhanced solid–liquid mass transfer for uranium removal. • The optimized micromotor achieved 91.22% U(VI) removal and 361.84 mg g ⁻1 uptake. • Uranium removal involved both surface adsorption and partial reduction to U(IV). Passive diffusion severely limits the mass-transfer efficiency and uranium uptake kinetics of conventional adsorbents for radioactive wastewater treatment. Here, we develop a series of light-responsive MOF-derived micro/nanomotors (MOFtors) to enhance uranium removal through active motion. The MOFtors were derived from ZIF-8@ZIF-67 core–shell precursors and further coupled with CdS to construct Zn/Co/Cd-containing heterostructures. Under UV irradiation (385 nm) and in the presence of H 2 O 2 , the MOFtors exhibited pronounced self-propulsion, which can be ascribed to the synergistic contributions of photothermal effects and photoinduced interfacial electrokinetic processes. Owing to the improved solid–liquid interfacial mass transfer, the optimized MOFtors achieved a U(VI) removal efficiency of 91.22% with an apparent uranium-removal capacity of 361.84 mg g ⁻1 . XPS analysis indicates that uranium removal involves both adsorption and partial reduction from U(VI) to U(IV). The MOFtors also showed good structural stability and retained high removal performance over five cycles. These results highlight the promise of MOF-derived light-responsive micromotors for uranium remediation and offer a feasible route toward dynamic adsorbents for radioactive wastewater treatment. Diabetic chronic wounds, as a prevalent and serious complication of diabetes, pose serious threats to patient health and survival, underscoring the urgent need for effective therapeutic strategies. Stem cell therapy has emerged as a promising approach, but its efficacy is often compromised by the hostile wound microenvironment, characterized by excessive reactive oxygen species and persistent inflammation. To address this challenge, we developed a nanozyme-based engineering strategy to enhance the therapeutic potential of periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs) based on a bimetallic CuNi-MOF nanozyme exhibiting dual superoxide dismutase- and catalase-like activities. In vitro experiments demonstrated that, the CuNi-MOF nanozyme effectively alleviated oxidative stress and reduced cellular senescence in PDLSCs. Mechanistic investigation revealed the involvement of the JNK/ERK signaling axis in this protective effect. In a diabetic wound model, nanozyme-engineered PDLSCs (E-PDLSCs), exhibited superior healing compared with untreated PDLSCs. Specifically, E-PDLSCs significantly accelerated re-epithelialization, enhanced collagen deposition, and promoted angiogenesis, while also modulating inflammatory cytokine levels and macrophage polarization. Overall, this study presents a cell engineering strategy that integrates antioxidant nanozymes with stem cells for chronic wound treatment, extending the potential applications of nanozyme in regenerative medicine.

A “top-down” strategy was employed to fabricate porous loofah sponge (LS) as a robust substrate. • Fe-doped ZIF-8 was in-situ grown on LS to fabricate a novel Fe/ZIF-8@LS composite adsorbent. • The composite exhibited excellent adsorption performance for tetracycline hydrochloride. • Adsorption was driven by hydrogen bonding, pore filling, electrostatic interaction and π-π interaction. The valorization of agricultural and forestry residues is crucial for sustainable pollution control. Herein, natural loofah, a typical lignocellulosic biomass waste, was pretreated via a “top-down” method to obtain porous loofah sponge (LS). This waste-derived porous framework was then used for the in situ growth of MOF via a bimetallic doping strategy, forming the Fe/ZIF-8@LS composite. The material was characterized by FT-IR, XRD, SEM, BET, and XPS, confirming the successful incorporation of Fe into the ZIF-8 framework and its uniform loading onto LS. The resulting composite was applied to adsorb tetracycline (TC), a recalcitrant antibiotic that tends to accumulate in water and poses serious ecological and health risks. Adsorption experiments showed that Fe/ZIF-8@LS achieved a maximum TC adsorption capacity of 169.33 mg g −1 at pH 6. The adsorption process was well described by Freundlich isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models, and thermodynamic results revealed its spontaneous and endothermic behavior. The underlying mechanisms involve hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interactions, π-π interactions, and coordination bond. Moreover, the material showed moderate reusability after five regeneration cycles. Collectively, this work not only enables the value-added utilization of agricultural and forestry waste, but also achieves the goal of “treating waste with waste” by using the resulting composite for efficient TC removal from aqueous environments. In modern society with advanced electronic communication technology, electromagnetic wave absorbers are crucial in military and daily life. As electronic devices update rapidly, there's a need for absorbers with stronger absorption, wider bandwidth, and lighter weight. Emerging two-dimensional MXenes, with excellent dielectric properties and a unique nanosheet structure, have great microwave absorption potential. However, their practical use is limited by impedance mismatch due to high conductivity, causing poor reflection loss. To solve this, we report a novel NiO/NiFe₂O₄@Ti₃C₂Tₓ composite made by simple coprecipitation and 2-hour annealing at 400°C. Core-shell NiO/NiFe₂O₄ nanocubes were evenly anchored on MXene nanosheets, introducing magnetic loss mechanisms and modulating dielectric response via defect engineering. The NiO/NiFe 2 O 4 @Ti 3 C 2 T X composite material reached a minimum reflection loss of −46.05 dB at 16.83 GHz, and the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) was 6.39 GHz at a thickness of 2.2 mm. This work offers a new strategy for designing high-performance microwave absorbers for aerospace stealth coatings.

Single crystals with excellent properties have been widely used in electronics industries due to their homogeneous and consistent structures. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), as a class of crystalline materials that can be synthetically tuned for functionality, are expected to be a favorable candidate for novel electronic devices. However, there is still a lack of methods to efficiently fabricate conductive patterns at the single-crystal scale. Here, laser instant writing of in situ continuous conductive interface on MOF single crystals is reported, enabling the patterning and continuous fabrication of conductive interface at the single-crystal scale. Carbon-wrapped Cu nanoparticles (Cu@C NPs) conductive interface is instantly written using a 1030 nm picosecond ultrafast laser on large HKUST-1 single crystals. It is found that different thermal accumulations can affect the conductivity of Cu@C and transformation of matter phase from Cu NPs to Cu 2 O on single crystals is observed as the ablation of carbonaceous materials. As a validation, single-crystal sensor with interdigitated electrodes (IDEs) constructed by laser interface technique shows a wide response range of 5%–90% RH and a fast response time of 2 s toward humidity sensing. This method sheds new light on the construction of functional interface on single MOF crystal, providing a novel strategy for MOF-based electronics.

Nanoparticles are of great significance to enhance tribological performances and can be employed as effective lubricant additives. 1T-MoS 2 has been widely applied in many fields. However, it is rarely studied in lubrication application. In this study, a novel core-shell lubricant additive was prepared by combining CuNi-MOF and 1T-MoS 2 via a facile hydrothermal method. The as-prepared CuNi-MOF@1T-MoS 2 exhibited a flower-like structure. Both experimental and theoretical calculation results showed the interlamellar interactions between the layered 1T-MoS 2 and CuNi-MOF sheets. Tribological properties of PEG200 containing CuNi-MOF@1T-MoS 2 were systematically investigated by a four-ball test machine. In comparison with PEG200, the friction coefficient and wear scar diameter were remarkably reduced by 56.8 % and 34.0 %, respectively. Therefore, the combination of 1T-MoS 2 and CuNi-MOF presents a promising candidate for enhancing the tribological properties of PEG200.

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have received widespread attention in recent years. However, the powder form of MOFs limits their large-scale applications. To facilitate the application of MOFs, mass production and shaped manufacturing of MOFs is significantly effective. Herein, a generic method based on a simple polymerization technique is proposed to prepare highly porous MOF–cellulose composite beads and the application of these composite beads in dye removal and recovery is displayed. Non-toxic solvent water and biodegradable sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) were used as raw materials in the synthesis method. In addition to maintaining the crystallinity and porosity of the MOFs embedded in the cellulose matrix, the unique three-dimensional lamellar interconnected structure provides good mechanical properties for the composite beads. To demonstrate the practicality of these composite beads, a recycling processing system was built as a proof-of-concept device. MIL-100/CMC-HD can effectively degrade more than 95% of the dye and can be recycled multiple times. The superiority of the MOF–cellulose composite beads is highlighted by their ease of recycling and storage compared to MOF powder. Graphical abstract MOF/carboxymethylcellulose porous composite beads are synthesized in a simple one-step process. The lamellar interconnected structure not only facilitates the diffusion of contaminants in water but also provides good mechanical properties.
