MXene enhanced reduced graphene oxide aerogel for high-performance supercapacitors

Wang Zhenjiang,Yang Xinli,Wang Gang,Yang Xiping,Qiao Longhao,Lu Mingxia

Three-dimensional (3D) reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/Ti 2 CT x MXene hybrid aerogels were effectively prepared by a two-step method involving hydrothermal reaction and freeze-drying. The intimately coupled rGO/Ti 2 CT x hybrid aerogel combined high electrical conductivity, large interlayer spacing, and excellent mechanical stability of Ti 2 CT x , which not only effectively prevents the self-restacking of Ti 2 CT x nanosheets, exposes more active sites exposed, and improves the volume change during the charge/discharge process but also increases the accessibility of ions and promotes the rapid transfer of ions/electrons. As a result, rGO/Ti 2 CT x 17.5–2.5 as the working electrode of electric double layer capacitors delivers a large specific capacity (107.05 F g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 in a 1M Na 2 SO 4 electrolyte), a high rate capability (maintains 30% of its initial capacitance at 10 A g −1 , which is much better than rGO and Ti 2 CT x ), and excellent long-term large-current cycle stability (the initial capacitance remains above 71.1% after 10 000 cycles at 1 A g −1 ). In addition to providing a high-performance electrode for supercapacitors, this study proposes an efficient and time-saving strategy for constructing 3D structures from 2D materials.

MXene Nanosheet/Aramid Nanofiber Sandwich Films for Fire Warning Applications

Zijian Chen,Dingding Wang,Yingying An,Zhikun Jiang,Ting Li,Siqi Wang,Heng Zhang,Wei Yang,Hongdian Lu,Chunxiang Wei

Early fire alarm sensors play a critical role in preventing potential fire accidents. However, most current fire alarm materials are limited by their high activation temperature and low sensitivity. In this study, a flexible sandwich-like film (AMA) was developed using vacuum-assisted self-assembly and hot-pressing technology with aramid nanofibers (ANF) and MXene. This film exhibits ultrahigh sensitivity to both low temperatures and flames and has long-lasting fire warning capabilities with a rapid response time (400 ms) and a continuous alarm signal (∼900 s) under the attack of flame. Compared to existing technologies, the AMA film offers significantly enhanced flexibility, superior thermal stability, and broader temperature sensitivity. These advancements address the limitations of narrow temperature monitoring ranges and slow response times in traditional fire alarm materials, positioning the AMA film as a promising candidate for next-generation fire safety applications.

MXene/Cellulose Hydrogel Composites: Preparation and Adsorption Properties of Pb2+

Qiang Yang,Jia Zhang,Hairong Yin,Junkang Guo,Shenghua Lv,Yaofeng Li

In this work, acrylic cellulose hydrogel, a typical natural polymer adsorbent, was modified using MXene through in situ polymerization to create a synthetic inorganic–polymer composite known as MXene/cellulose hydrogel. FTIR, XRD, SEM, and thermogravimetric analyses were applied to characterize the chemical structure and micromorphology. The MXene/cellulose hydrogel was utilized for the removal of Pb2+from wastewater. Under optimal experimental conditions (initial Pb2+concentration of 0.04 mol/L, adsorption time of 150 min, pH = 5.5, and MXene doping content of 50% at 30 °C), a maximum adsorption capacity of 410.57 mg/g was achieved. The MXene/cellulose hydrogel corresponded with the pseudo-second-order kinetic equation model and exhibited a better fit with the Freundlich isotherm model.

MXene@Fe3O4/PDA nanosheets with photothermal-magnetically coupled antibacterial properties

Jie Jin,Shanshan Wu,Xue Fang,Haoran Li,Jing Wang,Shouhu Xuan,Weili Kong,Di Wang,Xia Chen,Ken Cham-Fai Leung,Qunling Fang,Tianzhi Luo

Pathogenic infections pose a major threat to global public health, and what's worse is that the bacteria in infected places often exist in the form of biofilms, making it impossible for antibiotics and other contact bactericidal substances to penetrate their interior. Therefore, looking for an effective method with synergistic antibacterial and biofilm removal properties is a key challenge. A kind of magnetic MXene@Fe 3 O 4 /PDA nanosheets with antibacterial properties of photothermal magnetic coupling are reported in this paper. Fe 3 O 4 was grown in situ on MXene nanosheets and then coated with a layer of polydopamine (PDA). MXene@Fe 3 O 4 /PDA nanosheet (120 μg/mL) showed an over 95% inhibition rate against E. coli and S. aureus under 808 nm laser irradiation. In addition, peroxidase-like activity can produce reactive oxygen species. The photothermal antibacterial properties were further enhanced under the action of rotating magnetic field. The antibacterial activity was increased to close to 99.99%, and the removal effect of biofilm was also very good. The photothermal and magnetic coupled antibacterial effects can reduce the amount of MXene@Fe 3 O 4 /PDA, thus it is expected to reduce the damage caused by overheating normal tissues and is safer than pure photothermal therapy.

Mxene-based mild hyperthemia microneedle patch for diabetic wound healing

Yuci Gan,Bo Liang,Yan Gong,Lizhen Wu,Peizhe Li,Chuchen Gong,Pei Wang,Ziyou Yu,Lingling Sheng,Da-Peng Yang,Xiansong Wang

The treatment of diabetic wounds remains a serious challenge due to the unfavorable diabetic microenvironment, characterized by high glucose levels, excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS), and chronic inflammation. For decades, several hypoglycemic drugs have been used clinically to decrease blood glucose levels; however, they are unable to regulate in situ hyperglycemic microenvironments. In this study, we introduced a poly (γ-glutamic acid) (γ-PGA)-based microneedle (MN) patch encapsulated with glucose oxidase (GOx)-loaded Ti 3 C 2 MXene nanosheets (MXene) termed MN-PGA-MXene-GOx. GOx, which lowers local glucose and pH by oxidizing glucose, is delivered deep into tissues via the MN patch, while MXene ensures its prolonged release. When the MN patch is exposed to external NIR light, MXene can induce mild hyperthermia, enhance the catalytic activity of GOx, and promote cell proliferation, migration, angiogenesis, and tissue remodeling. Both γ-PGA and MXene possess antioxidant properties, mitigating ROS in the diabetic environment and reducing hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) produced during glucose oxidation. In conclusion, this multifunctional microneedle patch provides a novel approach for accelerating diabetic wound healing, utilizing GOx and MXene for in-situ glucose management and mild hyperthermia.

MXene-CeO2@PDA Synergistically Enhanced Anticorrosion of Waterborne Epoxy Coating

Cansen Liu,Qingmei Chen,Canhai Cai,Jianyu Xu

Developing ecofriendly anticorrosion coating has great demand for marine protection. Incorporation of nontoxic inorganic fillers into waterborne epoxy (WEP) coating shows tremendous potential for enhancing corrosion resistance. However, the application of MXene/WEP coating is limited by the poor dispersion of MXene in WEP and insufficient corrosion resistance. Herein, a polydopamine (PDA) modified MXene-CeO 2 @PDA (MCP) filler is constructed by a combination of CeO 2 with MXene and embedded into WEP to form ecofriendly anticorrosion MCP/WEP coating. Dispersion of MXene in WEP is improved by the introduction of CeO 2 and PDA modification. Benefiting from the synergy of the physical labyrinth effect of MXene and the chemical inhibition effect of CeO 2 , MCP/WEP coating exhibits remarkable anticorrosion behavior in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution with a low corrosion rate (CR) of 4.48 × 10 −6 mpy, which is three orders of magnitude lower than that of blank WEP (4.78 × 10 −3 mpy). Moreover, MCP/WEP presents long-term and stable corrosion protection for over 30 days. The results reveal the incorporation of MCP significantly promotes the anticorrosion performance of WEP.

MXene-intercalated covalent organic framework membranes for high-flux nanofiltration

Zhuo-Hao Wu,Meidi Wang,Yu-Xin Ren,Shuang Li,Xing-Yu Liu,Yu Cao,Xue-Qian Wu,Guangtong Hai,Zhongyi Jiang,Dong-Sheng Li

Covalent organic framework (COF) membranes are envisioned as promising materials for precise molecular separations. The manipulation of interlayer spacing to offer additional mass transfer channels in COF membranes may be an effective way towards high-flux separation processes but still challenging. Herein, the COF membranes with 1D/2D mixed-dimensional channels are explored by the intercalation of MXene for high-flux dye separations. Thereinto, porous TpPa-SO 3 H nanosheets offer the 1D in-plane channels, and smaller-sized Ti 3 C 2 T x -NH 2 nanosheets serve as the intercalators to generate 2D interlayer channels. By tuning the content of Ti 3 C 2 T x -NH 2 , the interlayer spacing is enlarged from 0.32 nm to 0.46 nm, affording low diffusion energy barrier and ultrafast diffusion kinetics. Compared to the pristine TpPa-SO 3 H membrane, the COF/Mx-8 membrane exhibits an 90 % increase in water flux to 375.8 L m −2  h −1 bar −1 , while maintaining high rejections toward various dye molecules. The strategy of MXene-intercalated mixed-dimensional channels is suitable for diverse types of 2D COF membranes.

Orbit symmetry breaking in MXene implements enhanced soft bioelectronic implants

Yizhang Wu,Yuan Li,Yihan Liu,Dashuai Zhu,Sicheng Xing,Noah Lambert,Hannah Weisbecker,Siyuan Liu,Brayden Davis,Lin Zhang,Meixiang Wang,Gongkai Yuan,Chris Zhoufan You,Anran Zhang,Cate Duncan,Wanrong Xie,Yihang Wang,Yong Wang,Sreya Kanamurlapudi,Garcia-Guzman Evert,Arjun Putcha,Michael D. Dickey,Ke Huang,Wubin Bai

Bioelectronic implants featuring soft mechanics, excellent biocompatibility, and outstanding electrical performance hold promising potential to revolutionize implantable technology. These biomedical implants can record electrophysiological signals and execute direct therapeutic interventions within internal organs, offering transformative potential in the diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of various pathological conditions. However, challenges remain in improving excessive impedance at the bioelectronic-tissue interface and thus the efficacy of electrophysiological signaling and intervention. Here, we devise orbit symmetry breaking in MXene (a low-cost scalability, biocompatible, and conductive two dimensionally layered material, which we refer to as OBXene), which exhibits low bioelectronic-tissue impedance, originating from the out-of-plane charge transfer. Furthermore, the Schottky-induced piezoelectricity stemming from the asymmetric orbital configuration of OBXene facilitates interlayered charge transport in the device. We report an OBXene-based cardiac patch applied on the left ventricular epicardium of both rodent and porcine models to enable spatiotemporal epicardium mapping and pacing while coupling the wireless and battery-free operation for long-term real-time recording and closed-loop stimulation.

Polydopamine/MXene Nanosheet/Polyaniline/Polydimethylsiloxane Foams for Oil–Water Separation

Chunyu Li,Mengqing Zhou,Congling Shi,Xiaodong Qian,Lian Yin,Keqing Zhou

It remains a huge challenge to clean leaks of oil and various organic solvents quickly and efficiently, especially for special conditions such as high-viscosity oils, corrosion from acid/alkali solutions, high-temperature damage, and fire risk. The adsorbents with a three-dimensional porous structure and excellent resilience have been recognized as prospective candidates for dealing with oil–water separation problems. In this study, solar responsive and multifunctional polyurethane foams were successfully fabricated by compounding photothermal and hydrophobic components by both internal and external means. Due to the interface adhesion, polydopamine/MXene nanosheet/polyaniline/polydimethylsiloxane polyurethane (PMPP–PU) foams prepared by introducing PDA/MXene nanoparticles and phytic acid (PA)/PANI micronano coatings exhibited a high adsorption capacity up to 61.4 g/g for different kinds of low-viscosity organic solvents. Driven by 1 kW/m2 illumination intensity, the adsorption capacity of PMPP–PU for high-viscosity oil increased to 29.4 g/g, realizing a 203% rise compared to pure PU. Also, the modified foams achieved rapid extrusion and cyclic adsorption of adsorbed solvents, and PMPP–PU showed an adsorption efficiency of close to 90% after 20 cycles. Besides, the prepared adsorbent foams remained persistent and maintained stable hydrophobicity under extreme environmental conditions and were not significantly damaged even by fire attack. This work presents a competitive strategy for the separation and recovery of low-viscosity organic solvents and high-viscosity oils.

Smell cancer by machine learning-assisted peptide/MXene bioelectronic array

Jiawang Hu,Nanlin Hu,Donglei Pan,Yan Zhu,Xuan Jin,Shikai Wu,Yuan Lu

Non-invasive detection of tumors is of utmost importance to save lives. Nonetheless, identifying tumors through gas analysis is a challenging task. In this work, biosensors with remarkable gas-sensing characteristics were developed using a self-assembly method consisting of peptides and MXene . Based on these biosensors, a mimetic biosensor array (MBA) was fabricated and integrated into a real-time testing platform (RTP). In addition, machine learning (ML) algorithms were introduced to improve the RTP's detection and identification capabilities of exhaled gas signals. The synthesized biosensor, with the ability to specifically bind to targeted gas molecules, demonstrated higher performance than the pristine MXene , with a response up to 150% greater. Besides, the MBA successfully detected 15 odor molecules affiliated with five categories of alcohols, ketones , aldehydes, esters, and acids by pattern recognition algorithms. Furthermore, with the ML assistance, the RTP detected the breath odor samples from volunteers of four categories, including healthy populations, patients of lung cancer, upper digestive tract cancer, and lower digestive tract cancer , with accuracies of 100%, 94.1%, 90%, and 95.2%, respectively. In summary, we have developed a cost-effective and precise model for non-invasive tumor diagnosis. Furthermore, this prototype also offers a versatile solution for diagnosing other diseases like nephropathy, diabetes, etc.

Solvent-mediated structural regulation of MXene membranes for H2 purification

Changdie Cao,Yurun Dai,Zhihao Liu,Zong Lu,Mide Luo,Yanying Wei,Haihui Wang

Two-dimensional (2D) nanosheet membranes presented excellent gas separation performance, which has attracted increasing attention. The electrophoretic deposition (EPD) method provides a fast and scalable route for the preparation of 2D nanosheet membranes aimed at future industrial applications. However, the formation of bubbles via water electrolysis during EPD would damage the membrane structure, and the expansion of interlayer spacing would hinder its utilization. Herein, the solvent-mediated structural regulation strategy for MXene membrane preparation via EPD is proposed for H 2 purification. The effect of various organic solvents on the EPD-prepared MXene membrane structure and gas separation performance has been investigated. Notably, the MXene membranes deposited using acetone as solvent exhibit outstanding gas separation performance, boasting an H 2 /CO 2 selectivity of 374 with a H 2 permeance of 748 GPU for at least 450 h. This work offers a novel approach to fast fabricating 2D nanosheet membranes with outstanding gas separation performance

Xiangjun Liu,Jingjing Ma,Shuai Zhang,Guo-Wei Guan,Qing-Yuan Yang,Junqi Wang

Harvesting solar energy to drive highly efficient photocatalytic conversion of renewable biomass to value-added chemicals and H 2, is a green and promising strategy to acquire clean H 2 with high energy density. In this study, CdS nanoparticles/Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets (Ti 3 C 2 T x /CdS composites) photocatalysts were prepared by a hydrothermal strategy. With an optimized Ti 3 C 2 T x loading of 0.8 wt%, the Ti 3 C 2 T x /CdS composites exhibited a significant enhancement in the photocatalytic H 2 evolution reaction with long-term stability, reaching 20,427 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 , compared to the pristine CdS (1,999 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 ). The Ti 3 C 2 T x /CdS-0.8 reflects appropriate electronic band structure and excellent conductivity, resulting in efficiently generation and migration of photoinduced electrons. In addition, the apparent quantum yield of Ti 3 C 2 T x /CdS-0.8 was 9.4% at 420 nm, higher than that of pristine CdS (1.2%). Superior results (7,164 μmol·h −1 ·g −1 ) were also achieved in the conversion of raw biomass to H 2 under natural sunlight. Achieving solar-driven H 2 production from biomass represents a significant step forward in contributing to sustainable and clean energy practices.
