Infected diabetic wounds have become a major global health threat due to their complex conditions, making them difficult to heal. Herein, a coaxial fibrous dressing capable of sequential release of nitric oxide (NO) and molecular hydrogen (H2) was designed for the treatment of infected diabetic wounds. The outer layer of the coaxial fibers was physically loaded with the NO donor, enabling the first stage of rapid and high-level NO release (over 170 μM). The released NO contributed to the antibacterial function of the dressing (in vitro antibacterial assays demonstrated eradication rates of 99.99% and 99.04% against S. aureus and E. coli, respectively), thus facilitating accelerated transition of the wound through the inflammatory phase. The inner layer of coaxial fibers becomes progressively exposed following structural disintegration, enabling the hydrolysis of encapsulated H2 donor to achieve on-demand release of H2 under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation. The released H2 could promote wound healing through reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging and macrophage M2 polarization, as validated by in vitro cell assessments. In vivo infected full-thickness skin defect model in diabetic mice demonstrated that the NO/H2 sequential release coaxial fibrous dressing significantly accelerated healing of infected wounds through rapid bactericidal action via substantial NO release, followed by further sequential H2 release promoting repairing and regeneration. This temporally sequential delivery of antibacterial and healing-promoting functions significantly accelerated the healing of infected diabetic wounds.

Oroxylin A, a flavonoid, is naturally produced in many medicinal plants. Our previous study identified it as a phytoestrogen. Based on this, the present study investigated its vasoconstriction reducing effects and whether the action was mediated by the estrogen receptor (ER) signal pathway. Long-term in vitro treatment with oroxylin A reduced Ach-induced vasorelaxation and NE-mediated or KCl-mediated contractile responses in rat aortic rings. These effects were interfered by an ER inhibitor ICI 182,780. Rat cardiac microvascular endothelial cells (CMECs) and aortic vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) were used to study the possible underlying mechanisms. Oroxylin A activated the ER signal pathway. In CMECs, it increased NO production and eNOS protein expression. In VSMCs, it promoted NO production and iNOS protein expression. These effects were also inhibited by ICI 182,780. Besides, oroxylin A stimulated ERα and ERβ protein expression in CMECs and VSMCs. All these findings suggest that the ER signal pathway takes part in the vasoconstriction reducing effects of oroxylin A.

The chemical absorption-bioelectrochemical reduction (CABER) integrated system provides an alternative of good potential for NO removal. The efficient utilization of cathode electrons directly determines the system performance and operating cost. Herein, we synthesize a polypyrrole/carbon nanotubes (PPy/CNTs) composite to engineer a micro-and nanoscale interface with low resistance and high biocompatibility between the cathode and biofilms in the CABER system. The resulting PPy/CNTs biocathodes exhibit 36.4% increase in biomass density, 40.7%–302.6% increase in Faraday efficiency along Fe(III)EDTA reduction, and 204% increase in Fe(II)EDTA-NO reduction rate. The enrichment of functional microorganisms is validated to be a key strengthening factor, as the proportion of which increased from 57.9% to 84.6%. Moreover, for efficient electron transfer and utilization, a low-resistance electron transfer route, “electrode substrate → PPy (→ CNTs) → microbial cells → Fe(III)EDTA or Fe(II)EDTA-NO”, is realized in the multiscale conductive networks constructed of PPy/CNTs composite and microbial nanowires .

Limited light absorption and severe charge recombination have been widely acknowledged as the two main obstacles restricting the application of P25 in NO photocatalytic conversion. In this work, an advanced heterojunction photocatalyst of Bi/BiOI/black TiO 2 was synthesized via an in-situ solid-state chemical reduction method. The black TiO 2 extended the light absorption to the full spectral region. It constructed a direct Z-scheme heterojunction with BiOI nanosheets, not only promoting the charge separation, but also preserving the strong oxidation ability of photogenerated holes in black TiO 2 and strong reducing ability of photogenerated electrons in BiOI. Thus, more •O 2 − and •OH radical could form when Bi/BiOI/black TiO 2 was subjected to visible light irradiation. Besides, the introduced Bi metal nanoparticles could also enhance the light utilization and served as a cocatalyst to accept the electrons. Therefore, enhanced NO photocatalytic oxidation activity was obtained, with the optimal sample Bi/BiOI/black TiO 2 exhibiting a high NO conversion efficiency of ~70% and NO x removal of ~45%. This work may provide a refreshing perspective for the design of heterojunction photocatalysts for efficient NO photocatalytic purification and other photocatalytic applications.

FeII(EDTA) solution has been considered an efficient option in wet flue gas denitrification, whereas the generated FeII(EDTA)–NO restricts its wide application, suggesting that FeII(EDTA)–NO reduction is the key to this process. This work investigated the performance, kinetics, and mechanism of FeII(EDTA)–NO reduction by Mn powder coupled with manganese ion (Mn2+) recovery. We initially studied the performance of FeII(EDTA)–NO reduction with respect to the major influencing factors (i.e., the particle size of Mn powder, initial FeII(EDTA)–NO concentration, Mn powder concentration, stirring speed, and temperature). Shrinking core model and Arrhenius law were applied to illustrate the kinetics and mechanism between FeII(EDTA)–NO solution and Mn powder, suggesting that the solid–liquid reaction was fitted on chemical reaction control, and the activation energy was calculated as 43.0 kJ mol–1. The effects of main operating parameters, such as precipitant concentration, pH value, and temperature, were studied on Mn2+ recovery. Results indicated that the pseudo-second-order model could precisely describe the kinetics of Mn2+ recovery. Finally, according to Arrhenius and Eyring–Polanyi equations, the reaction activation energy, enthalpy of activation, and entropy of activation for Mn2+ recovery were calculated as 17.25 kJ mol–1, 14.55 kJ mol–1, and 252.07 J (k mol)−1, respectively.

The controlled introduction of oxygen vacancies (OVs) in photocatalysts has been demonstrated to be an efficient approach for improving the separation of photogenerated charge carriers, and thus, for enhancing the photocatalytic performance of photocatalysts. In this study, a two-step calcination method where ZIF-8 was used as the precursor was explored for the synthesis of ZIF-8-derived ZnO nanoparticles with gradient distribution of OVs. Electron paramagnetic resonance measurements indicated that the concentration of OVs in the samples depended on the temperature treatment process. Ultraviolet–visible spectra supported that the two-step calcined samples presented excellent light-harvesting ability in the ultraviolet-to-visible light range. Moreover, it was determined that the two-step calcined samples presented superior photocatalytic performance for the removal of NO , and inhibited the generation of NO 2 . These properties could be attributed to the contribution of the OVs present in the two-step calcined samples to their photocatalytic performance. The electrons confined by the OVs could be transferred to O 2 to generate superoxide radicals, which could oxidize NO to the final product, nitrate. In particular, the NO removal efficiency of Z 350-400 (which was a sample first calcined at 350 °C for 2 h, then at 400 °C for 1 h) was 1.5 and 4.6 times higher than that of Z 400 (which was one-step directly calcined at 400 °C) and commercial ZnO, respectively. These findings suggested that OV-containing metal oxides that derived from metal-organic framework materials hold great promise as highly efficient photocatalysts for the removal of NO.

In this paper, a series of Fe-based catalysts with Zeolite Socony Mobil-5 (ZSM-5) as supports were synthesized using the sol–gel method to obtain the Fe/ZSM-5, Mn-Fe/ZSM-5, Cu-Fe/ZSM-5 and Cu-Mn-Fe/ZSM-5 catalysts. The synthesized catalysts were examined and characterized via catalytic activity testing, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), N 2 adsorption/desorption, scanning electron microscope (SEM), temperature-programmed desorption of NH 3 (NH 3 -TPD), temperature-programmed reduction with H 2 (H 2 -TPR) and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). The results showed that the Cu-Mn-Fe/ZSM-5 catalyst had the best catalytic performance compared with the other catalysts. In addition, Fe/ZSM-5 and Cu-Mn-Fe/ZSM-5 all exhibited excellent stability as well as good tolerance to SO 2 & H 2 O under the experimental conditions. Further characterization results showed that with co-doping of Cu and Mn, the amount of Mn 4+ , Cu + , Fe 3+ and surface chemisorbed oxygen (O β ) on the surface of Fe/ZSM-5 increased, promoting the catalytic performance. The DRIFT studies revealed that the NH 3 -SCR reaction followed both the E-R and L-H mechanism on the surface of the Fe-based ZSM-5 catalyst. The Fe-based ZSM-5 catalyst is a good candidate for NH 3 -SCR both in high reactivity and outstanding stability.

As an important surface modifier, conventional silane coupling agents generally emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) like methanol or ethanol during the modification of glass fiber. To avoid VOCs emission, a phenol/amine co-deposition of tannic acid (TA) with polyethyleneimine (PEI) was used to modify glass fiber (TP-GF) based on mussel-inspired surface chemistry. The reinforcement effect of TP-GF on polyamide 6 (PA6) matrix was investigated, and the corresponding results were compared with those of γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (KH550) modified glass fiber (KH550-GF)/PA6 composites. The results showed that the interfacial adhesion between TP-GF and PA6 matrix was superior to that between KH550-GF and PA6 matrix, and thus TP-GF/PA6 composites manifested more excellent mechanical properties than KH550-GF/PA6 composites. Among these composites, TP-GF (1.05 wt% of coating amount)/PA6 composites exhibited the optimal mechanical properties (tensile strength: 151.3 MPa, notched impact strength: 13.8 kJ m −2 ) compared with KH550-GF (1.33 wt% of coating amount)/PA6 composites (tensile strength: 144.8 MPa, notched impact strength: 9.5 kJ m −2 ). In particular, the notched impact strength was significantly increased by 45%. Notably, there was no VOCs generation during the preparation of TP-GF, indicating that TP-GF could be used as an environmentally friendly glass fiber for the fabrication of high-performance PA6 composites.

Selective adsorption using porous materials is a promising approach to removing ambient nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ). However, the highly reactive nature of NO 2 and the often-associated release of nitric oxide (NO) render a formidable challenge in developing effective and stable adsorbents. Here, we designed multivariate porphyrin-based metal–organic frameworks (MTV-PMOFs Al-PMOF(Ni x Co y )) featuring atomically dispersed Ni/Co dual-metal centers in the porphyrin ring as active adsorption sites, as robust adsorbents capable of synergistically boosting NO 2 adsorption capability and retaining the evolved NO. The introduction of the Ni/Co dual-metal sites in MTV-PMOFs greatly enhanced the NO x adsorption performance. Under dry conditions, Al-PMOF(Ni 1 Co 1 ) exhibited a NO 2 adsorption capacity of 3.66 mmol/g (100 ppm NO 2 in feed), among the highest under similar conditions, a high NO retention ability, and good regenrability (85%). Under wet conditions, its NO 2 removal capacity was further elevated by more than 50% (5.65 mmol/g). Moreover, the Ni/Co ratio in MTV-PMOFs dictates a structure–property relationship between the released amount of NO and adsorbed capacity of NO 2 . Such a corporative NO 2 and NO adsorption was for the first time established in MOFs. The material stability and potential economic value were also investigated to demonstrate the applicability of MTV-PMOFs as NO 2 adsorbents. This work provides new perspectives for the development of adsorption-based technology for mitigating ambient NO 2 pollution and managing other corrosive and toxic gases.

The construction of CN/UiO-67 (CNU) S-scheme heterojunction composites through in situ formation of UiO-67 on carbon nitride (C 3 N 4 ) helps to address the limitations of carbon nitride (CN) in photocatalytic NO elimination. The optimized CNU 3 demonstrates superior photocatalytic efficiency, which is attributed to electronic channels constructed by Zr-N bonds and S-scheme electron transport mechanism, effectively promoting the efficient separation of photogenerated charge carriers with high redox potentials. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations reveal redistributed electronic orbitals in CNU 3 , with progressive and continuous energy levels near the Fermi level, which bolsters electronic conduction. Comprehensive quenching experiments, Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR), and in situ Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform Spectroscopy (DRIFTS) analyses highlight a synergistic interplay of electrons, holes, and superoxide radicals in CNU 3 , inhibiting the generation of toxic nitrogen oxide intermediates and culminating in highly efficient photocatalytic NO oxidation. This study not only elucidates the mechanisms underpinning the enhanced performance of CNU 3 heterojunctions but also offers new perspectives on the preparation and interfacial charge separation of heterojunction photocatalysts.

This paper reported the feasibility of a supercritical water synthesis route (referred as CHFS) in the application of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with NH 3 . A series of well-reported Ce x TiO 2 SCR catalysts were synthesized and then subjected to a range of characterizations (e.g. XRD, XPS, H 2 -TPR, HADDF, etc.). Experimental results revealed that the unusual and rapid crystallizing environment of the CHFS route had resulted in a highly dispersed CeO 2 and a strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) for Ce x TiO 2 catalysts, which promoted the enriched surface oxygen vacancies and facilitated the formation of NO 2 and nitrite species over the catalyst surface, effectively enhancing their SCR performances. Amongst the developed Ce x TiO 2 catalysts, Ce 0.25 TiO 2 revealed the highest SCR activity with more than 90% NO conversion being achieved in a broad temperature range of 240–440 °C. Such broad temperature window was proven due to the SMSI, which lowered the NH 3 oxidation ability of CeO 2 , retaining the effective utilization of NH 3 throughout the SCR process. The work conducted herein demonstrates the feasibility of the CHFS route in the syntheses of SMSI catalysts for SCR application and also explores the SCR reaction mechanism over the well-reported Ce x TiO 2 catalysts. We expected that this work could shed some lights on the development of feasible preparative routes for the syntheses of advanced SMSI catalysts for SCR application.

Under mild continuous-flow gas-solid conditions, the direct conversion of gaseous nitric oxide (NO) in flue gas to pure ammonia (NH 3 ) is hindered by the challenges of sustaining continuous proton-electron coupling and transfer. Here, we develop a PtO x -TiO 2 photocatalyst featuring ultrafine PtO x clusters that sustain continuous electron transfer via dynamic PtO x /PtO ( x−δ ) redox cycling. Upon illumination, PtO x continuously captures photogenerated electrons to form PtO ( x−δ ) and injects them into NO antibonding orbitals, while the PtO x -TiO 2 interface simultaneously drives H 2 O dissociation to provide a steady proton flux. This persistent electron-proton coupling orchestrated by PtO x /PtO ( x−δ ) cluster interface promotes exciton dissociation, interfacial charge separation, and stepwise hydrogenation of NO to NH 3 . Under continuous-flow conditions with 200 ppm NO, PtO x -TiO 2 achieves 76.0% NO conversion, 808.25 mmol m −2 h −1 NH 3 yield, and 98.1% selectivity, representing a 9.1-fold enhancement over pristine TiO 2 and representing the current best performance in the gas-solid phase NO reduction for NH 3 synthesis. In situ spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the exceptional activity mainly stems from the facilitated electron-proton coupled transfer via the unique role of PtO x /PtO ( x−δ ) cluster. This work establishes a practical strategy for sustainable NO abatement with green NH 3 production without separation in gas-solid systems.
