Structural control of PEG-intercalating Na-bentonite and its influence on the properties of castor oil-based polyurethane coating

Shiping Wang,Rui Huang,Kun Ren,Lushen Shen,Xiang Li,Ganchang Lei,Lijuan Shen,Yingying Zhan,Ying Zheng,Lilong Jiang

Although controlled-release fertilizer (CRF) is a safer and more efficient strategy to administer nutrients for plant growth, it is still a daunting task to reduce the cost and improve the degradability of the synthetic resin coatings. In this paper, an inorganic/organic composite coating for urea fertilizer was prepared from a biodegradable castor oil-based polyurethane (PU) filled with the layered Na-bentonite (Na-BT), which was ultrasonically treated by a series of green PEG surfactants . Synergistically influenced by various intercalation ability, cation-hosting ability and hydrophilicity of the PEGs, the porous structures of the modified Na-BT (MBT) fillers were simply tuned by varying the Mn molecular weights of the PEGs, resulting in the adjustable water swelling and mechanical properties of the MBT/PU composites. Moreover, it was confirmed that the water swelling property played a critical role in controlling the early stage of nutrient release, and the mechanical properties were important for the longevity of nutrient release from the CRFs. The best MBT/PU composite supported a CRF with a long-term release of 75 % in 38 days, which was much longer than the one based on pure PU (20 days).

Prenatal exposure to corn oil, CMC-Na or DMSO affects physical development and multi-organ functions in fetal mice

Kaiqi Chen,Xiaoqian Lu,Dan Xu,Yu Guo,Ying Ao,Hui Wang

Corn oil, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-Na), and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) are widely used as solvents or suspensions in animal experiments, but the effects of prenatal exposure to them on fetal development have not been reported. In this study, Kunming mice were given a conventional dose of corn oil (9.2 g/kg·d), CMC-Na (0.05 g/kg·d) or DMSO (0.088 g/kg·d) during gestation days 10–18, and the pregnancy outcome, fetal physical development, serum phenotype, and multi-organ function changes were observed. The results showed that corn oil decreased serum triglyceride level in males but increased their serum testosterone and CORT levels, and affected female placenta and female/male multi-organ functions (mainly bone, liver, kidney). CMC-Na increased female/male body lengths and tail lengths, decreased serum glucose and total cholesterol levels in males as well as increased their serum LDL-C/HDL-C ratio and testosterone level, decreased female serum bile acid level, and affected male/female placenta and multi-organ functions (mainly bone, liver, hippocampus). DMSO decreased male body weight and serum glucose level, decreased male/female serum bile acid levels, and affected male/female placenta and multi-organs functions (mainly bone, hippocampus, adrenal gland). In conclusion, prenatal exposure to a conventional dose of corn oil, CMC-Na or DMSO could affect fetal physical development and multi-organ functions, and has the characteristics of "multi-pathway, multi-organ and multi-target". This study provides the experimental basis for the rational selection of solvents or suspensions in pharmacology and toxicology studies.

Probing the Structure and Dynamics of Na+ Ionic Doped LiF Crystals in Fluoride Eutectic Salt by Solid-State NMR

Huiyan Wu,Hailong Huang,Lingzhi Cao,Yiyang Liu,Jianxing Dai,Cuilan Ren,Min Ge,Yuan Qian,Shuxian Hu,Xiaobin Fu,Hongtao Liu

In this study, it was demonstrated that Na+ ionic doped crystals could be formed during the solidification of FLiNaK melts. The ionic adulterating behavior between Li+, Na+, and K+ ions was investigated in detail by using various 1D/2D solid-state NMR methods and theoretical calculations. 2D 19F–23Na and 19F–7Li HETCOR NMR showed that the Na+ ions could be doped into LiF and KF crystals to generate new adulterating phases. Furthermore, the doped ionic Na+ ions exhibited different dynamics in LiF and KF crystals, which is correlated to the bonding length of the lattice and the Na–F coordinated interactions. This study provides more insights into the ionic doped crystal phase formation in such simple alkali metal fluorides, which may be of greater significance in the application as optical devices.

Highly Stable Sb/C Anode for K+ and Na+ Energy Storage Enabled by Pulsed Laser Ablation and Polydopamine Coating

Hui Gao,Jeongyeon Lee,Qixiao Lu,Yoonbin Kim,Kang Ho Shin,Ho Seok Park,Zhonghua Zhang,Lawrence Yoon Suk Lee

Potassium- and sodium-ion batteries (PIBs and SIBs) have great potential as the next-generation energy application owing to the natural abundance of K and Na. Antimony (Sb) is a suitable alloying-type anode for PIBs and SIBs due to its high theoretical capacity and proper operation voltage; yet, the severe volume variation remains a challenge. Herein, a preparation of N-doped carbon-wrapped Sb nanoparticles (L-Sb/NC) using pulsed laser ablation and polydopamine coating techniques, is reported. As the anode for PIB and SIB, the L-Sb/NC delivers superior rate capabilities and excellent cycle stabilities (442.2 and 390.5 mA h g −1 after 250 cycles with the capacity decay of 0.037% and 0.038% per cycle) at the current densities of 0.5 and 1.0 A g −1 , respectively. Operando X-ray diffraction reveals the facilitated and stable potassiation and sodiation mechanisms of L-Sb/NC enabled by its optimal core–shell structure. Furthermore, the SIB full cell fabricated with L-Sb/NC and Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 2 F 3 shows outstanding electrochemical performances, demonstrating its practical energy storage application.

MXene-derived TiSe2/TiO2/C heterostructured hexagonal prisms as high rate anodes for Na-ion and K-ion batteries

Fangya Qi,Lianyi Shao,Xiaoyi Lu,Guoping Liu,Xiaoyan Shi,Zhipeng Sun

Establishing heterostructure is an effective strategy to improve the cycling and rate properties of electrode due to high charge transfer kinetics. Nevertheless, it is still a great challenge to prepare a reasonable heterojunction material with appropriate electrochemical property as anode for Na/K ion batteries. In this work, a novel MXene derivative consisted of TiSe 2 /TiO 2 /C heterostructured hexagonal prism has been prepared by a simple solid phase sintering method to converting Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene to TiSe 2 /TiO 2 /C. In this composite, TiSe 2 and TiO 2 with different work functions can induce a built-in electric field in the heterojunction interface, accelerating the electrochemical courses. Serving as an anode material for Na ion batteries , TiSe 2 /TiO 2 /C can keep a discharge capacity of 280 mAh g −1 at 5 A g −1 after 1000 cycles and a superior rate capability with 212 mAh g −1 even at 10 A g −1 . Even using as anode for K ion batteries , TiSe 2 /TiO 2 /C can still retain a capacity of 121 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 after 800 cycles. This work supplies a simple approach to design metal oxide/selenide heterostructures toward Na/K ion batteries with excellent performance and promotes the application of MXene derivatives in the field of energy storage.

Efficient production of biodiesel at low temperature using highly active bifunctional Na-Fe-Ca nanocatalyst from blast furnace waste

Yi-Tong Wang,Xiao-Man Wang,Di Gao,Fu-Ping Wang,Ya-Nan Zeng,Jun-Guo Li,Li-Qun Jiang,Qing Yu,Rui Ji,Le-Le Kang,Ya-Jun Wang,Zhen Fang

In this study, nanocatalysts for biodiesel production were prepared via wet impregnation of blast furnace dust (BFD) in Na 2 CO 3 (Na-BFD) and CaCO 3 (Ca-BFD) suspension solutions and calcination at 500 and 600 °C, respectively. Biodiesel yields of 100.0 wt% (Na-BFD 500 ) and 98.3 wt% (Ca-BFD 600 ) were achieved at 65 °C. Synthesized catalysts showed outstanding activity and recyclability, due to the transition of CaCO 3 , Na 2 CO 3 and Fe 2 O 3 to nanocrystals of NaFeO 2 (29.9 nm), Ca 2 Fe 2 O 5 (10.5 nm), CaO (100.1 nm) and Ca 2 Fe 2 O 5 (50.0 nm). Na-BFD 500 achieved 95.8 wt% biodiesel yield with 16 cycles, whereas Ca-BFD 600 reached 94.1 wt% biodiesel yield with 7 cycles via magnetic separation. BFD containing convertible magnetic and active components (Fe 2 O 3 and CaCO 3 ) was an ideal raw material to synthesize catalyst for biodiesel production with high catalytic efficiency and easy separation. The study provided a practical utilization of industrial solid waste for biodiesel production.

Enhancing ketones and syngas production by CO2-assisted catalytic pyrolysis of cellulose with the Ce–Co–Na ternary catalyst

Haifeng Jiang,Haipeng Liu,Jiaxin Dong,Jiaxing Song,Sunhua Deng,Jie Chen,Yu Zhang,Wenpeng Hong

Using cellulose to produce high-quality oxygenated fuels or chemicals is becoming an important way to replace chemical synthesis technology. In this work, the Ce–Co–Na ternary composite metal catalyst is synthesized and used for catalytic cracking of cellulose to prepare the ketone-rich bio-oil production. To construct an environment-friendly process, CO 2 is used as a pyrolysis reaction atmosphere to improve the enrichment of ketones. Strong synergistic effects among metal components effectively promote the thermal-cracking of cellulose to produce primary products (anhydrosugars), and further convert to oxygenates due to the excellent oxygen transferability of the catalyst. The introduction of CO 2 enhances the selectivity of ketones in the liquid product, especially 2,3-dimethyl-2-cyclopenten-1-one. The highest content of ketones in the liquid is 22.73%, which is about four times higher than that of the blank sample. In addition, the generation of CO in the syngas is promoted. This study provides an alternative way for the pyrolysis of biomass to prepare ketone platform compounds and syngas production .

Atomic Substitution to Tune ScO6 Distortion in Ba2MSc2(BO3)4 (M = Na, K, Ba) to Acquire a Large Birefringence

Jingfang Zhou,Pifu Gong,Mingjun Xia,Aimin Ji,Lifang Zhang,Huiqiang Wu,Qian Wu

Replacing alkali metals (K, Na atoms) by an alkaline-earth metal (Ba atom), α-Ba3Sc2(BO3)4 (high-temperature phase) is successfully obtained by a molten salt method, taking Ba2K1.6Na0.4Sc2(BO3)4 as the parent template. Although both of them exhibit similar layered structures composed of ScO6 and BO3 units, α-Ba3Sc2(BO3)4 shows largely distorted ScO6 octahedra (Δd = 0.56) forced by the uniform tension of a larger space effect from BaO12 polyhedrons, rather than regular ScO6 octahedra like in Ba2K1.6Na0.4Sc2(BO3)4. Experimental measurements and calculated analyses elucidate that distorted ScO6 octahedra in α-Ba3Sc2(BO3)4, displaying a second-order Jahn–Teller (SOJT) effect, enlarge the experimental birefringence up to 0.14@550 nm, while Ba2K1.6Na0.4Sc2(BO3)4 with regular ScO6 octahedra only shows Δn = 0.11 under the same condition. In addition, other optical and thermal properties of the two title compounds were characterized. The experimental results indicate that Ba2K1.6Na0.4Sc2(BO3)4 and α-Ba3Sc2(BO3)4 are promising birefringent materials.

Investigating the role of Na-bentonite colloids in facilitating Sr transport in granite minerals through column experiments and modeling

Xiaoying Zhang,Fangfei Cai,Funing Ma,Paul Reimus,Linlin Qi,Di Lu,Mohamad Reza Soltanian,Zhenxue Dai

Colloids play a crucial role in influencing the mobility of radionuclides in high-level radioactive waste repositories. However, the co-transport behavior of radionuclides and colloids in geological media remains insufficiently understood. This study investigated the transport of Strontium (Sr) in four types of granite minerals (quartz, biotite , K-feldspar, and plagioclase) in the presence and absence of Na-bentonite colloids (Na-BC) using column experiments. Employing a stepwise modeling strategy, this study first determined the basic flow and transport parameters through breakthrough curve analysis of the conservative tracer (Br). Then, the experimental data of Sr in the colloid-free Sr transport experiments and Na-BC in the Sr-colloid co-transport experiments were quantitatively explained using a two-site sorption model and a two kinetic sites model, respectively. Finally, the co-transport behavior of Sr and Na-BC was fitted using the colloid-facilitated solute transport model. The stepwise modeling allowed quantification of the kinetics of Sr sorption onto mobile and immobile Na-BC and highlighted the role of straining in Na-BC retention. In the absence of Na-BC, Sr transport experienced the greatest retardation in biotite, followed by plagioclase, K-feldspar, and quartz, respectively, which positively correlated with the specific surface area of the minerals. Moreover, Na-BC enhanced Sr transport with the same retardation order in all tested minerals, with recovery rate increments of 68.61%, 19.21%, 6.67%, and 4.33%, respectively. The transport of Sr in K-feldspar was found to be less affected by Na-BC compared to the other tested minerals, likely due to the strong cation exchange capacity of K + among the cation components of minerals, making hydrated K + more likely to exchange with Sr 2+ on K-feldspar surfaces. These findings hold significant implications for assessing the risks associated with the transport of radionuclides in deep geological repositories.

Highly stable and encapsulation-microstructural cathode derived by self-pressurization behavior in Na-halides-based all-solid-state batteries

Lin Li,Jingming Yao,Ruonan Xu,Qiaoquan Lin,Xinlin Yan,Chuang Yu,Long Zhang

The emerging halide solid electrolytes (SEs) possess superior (electro)chemical oxidation stabilities compared to sulfide SEs , but the understanding on their good compatibility toward oxide active materials needs to be further studied. Here, we develop a type of Zr-doped Na 3 YbCl 6 chloride SEs. The optimized composition gains a high ionic conductivity and broad electrochemical oxidation window. The in situ and ex situ analyses verify that the chloride as ionic additive in the cathode is highly compatible with NaCrO 2 . Importantly, it is revealed that the volume change in the cathode can act a position effect on the microstructure evolution . It promotes to form a special core-shell-like structure with homogeneous chloride encapsulating NaCrO 2 grains. Such a soft intimate contact promotes a uniform ion transport and mitigate (electro)chemo-mechanical stresses. The prerequisites generating this specific microstructure are proposed. The main capacity loss of the assembled all-solid-state Na batteries (ASSNBs) only occurs in the initial dozens of cycles, induced by the irreversible O3→O'3 phase transition in NaCrO 2 . The chloride additives with a soft feature and high oxidation-stability allow a high-quality interface in the oxide cathode and an excellent cycling stability of the ASSNBs.

Hollow Co3O4@N-doped carbon nanocrystals anchored on carbon nanotubes for freestanding anode with superior Li/Na storage performance

Shouji Huang,Liwen Yang,Guobao Xu,Tongye Wei,Jiao Tian,Xiong Liu,Huapeng Li,Ziyuan Xiang,Juexian Cao,Xiaolin Wei

A template-free strategy is developed to construct a composite of hollow Co 3 O 4 nanocrystals with N-doped carbon and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as freestanding anodes for Li and Na ion batteries (LIBs/NIBs) via a chemical precipitation and subsequent two-step annealing. In this composite, the N-doped carbon coated hollow Co 3 O 4 nanocrystals have a average diameter of 12 nm and are anchored tightly on highly conductive CNT substrates. Such nanocomposite possesses large specific surface area to supply ample active sites, highly conductive carbon networks to enhance electric conductivity, short ion diffusion distance to improve ion transport, and large interior space to accommodate volume expansion during repeatedly electrochemical reaction. Furthermore, kinetic analysis reveal that pseudocapacitive-controlled Li/Na storages plays a vital role. The freestanding composite as a anode for the LIBs exhibits large reversible capacity (1468 mAh g −1 after 130 cycles at 0.2 A g −1 ), superior rate performance (271 mAh g −1 at 12.5 A g −1 ) and good cyclic stability (905 mAh g −1 after 350 cycles at 1.0 A g −1 ). For the NIBs, the freestanding composite delivers attractive rate performance (104 mAh g −1 at 10 A g −1 ) and long cyclic performance (189 mAh g −1 after 400 cycles at 2.0 A g −1 ). Moreover, the assembled Li/Na full cell using the freestanding composite as anodes and LiFePO 4 (for LIBs) and Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 (For NIBs) as the cathodes display superior electrochemical performances. Our results suggest the prepared freestanding composite has a highly promising application in high-performance LIBs/NIBs.

Tunable Electrocatalytic Behavior of Sodiated MoS2 Active Sites toward Efficient Sulfur Redox Reactions in Room-Temperature Na–S Batteries

Yanxia Wang,Yangyang Lai,Jun Chu,Zichao Yan,Yun-Xiao Wang,Shu-Lei Chou,Hua-Kun Liu,Shi Xue Dou,Xinping Ai,Hanxi Yang,Yuliang Cao

Room-temperature (RT) sodium–sulfur (Na–S) batteries hold great promise for large-scale energy storage due to the advantages of high energy density, low cost, and resource abundance. The research progress on RT Na–S batteries, however, has been greatly hindered by the sluggish kinetics of the sulfur redox reactions. Herein, an elaborate multifunctional architecture, consisting of N-doped carbon skeletons and tunable MoS 2 sulfiphilic sites, is fabricated via a simple one-pot reaction followed by in situ sulfurization. Beyond the physical confinement and chemical binding of polarized N-doped carbonaceous microflowers, the MoS 2 active sites play a key role in catalyzing polysulfide redox reactions, especially the conversion from long-chain Na 2 S n (4 ≤ n ≤ 8) to short-chain Na 2 S 2 and Na 2 S. Significantly, the electrocatalytic activity of MoS 2 can be tunable via adjusting the discharge depth. It is remarkable that the sodiated MoS 2 exhibits much stronger binding energy and electrocatalytic behavior compared to MoS 2 sites, effectively enhancing the formation of the final Na 2 S product. Consequently, the S cathode achieves superior electrochemical performance in RT Na–S batteries, delivering a high capacity of 774.2 mAh g −1 after 800 cycles at 0.2 A g −1 , and an ultrahigh capacity retention with a capacity decay rate of only 0.0055% per cycle over 2800 cycles.
