The realization of high-performance EMI shielding materials with flexible, ultrathin and outstanding shielding efficiency is crucial in addressing the growing concern over electromagnetic radiation from electronic devices. In this research, flexible and ultrathin PDA modified Ti3C2Tx MXene/bacterial cellulose (PM/BC) composite films with densely stacked lamellar structures have been developed through a combination of experimental and theoretical investigations. The microstructure, interface interaction, mechanical properties and EMI shielding efficiency of the composite films have been comprehensively investigated. It is highlighted that the strong interfacial interaction between PDA and MXene nanosheets contributes to the enhanced tensile stress (178.1 ± 7.5 MPa) and fracture strain (6.9 ± 0.2%) of the flexible and ultrathin PM/BC composite film, demonstrating its excellent resistance to external forces. More interestingly, the composite film exhibits a remarkable electrical conductivity of up to 39 840 S m−1 and a superior EMI shielding performance of 53.9 dB, indicating its ability to attenuate electromagnetic waves effectively. These findings provide a feasible strategy to develop ultrathin and flexible MXene-based composite films with exceptional EMI shielding capability, which have great potential in protecting electronic devices, including wearable electronic products.

We present a straightforward emulsion-induced interfacial anisotropic assembly method for in- situ synthesis of bowl-shaped, self-encapsulated mesoporous polydopamine (BMPDA) nanocontainers (M-M@P) loaded with 2-mercaptobenzimidazole (2-MBI). Results showed that the loading capacity of the bowl-shaped mesoporous polydopamine reaches 24 wt.%. The M-M@P exhibits a cumulative MBI release of 91.61% after immersion in a 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution at pH = 2 for 24 h, accompanied by a corrosion inhibition efficiency of 95.54%. Additionally, the acid-responsive M-M@P not only enables controlled release of MBI but also synergistically promotes the formation of a protective film on the carbon steel substrate via the chelation of PDA-Fe3+, thereby enhancing the self-healing performance of waterborne epoxy coatings.

Improving the dispersion and compatibility of fillers in epoxy resin (EP) is crucial for enhancing the thermal stability, mechanical properties, and tribological performance of coatings. This study presents a novel biomimetic modification strategy. MoS2–TiN hybrid fillers are uniformly dispersed in the EP matrix and strongly bonded through comodification with polydopamine (PDA) and γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (KH550). The successful synthesis of MoS2–TiN@(PDA+KH550) fillers is confirmed by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and dispersion tests show that the aggregation of MoS2 and TiN is alleviated. Compared to pure EP, the PDA@MoS2–KH550@TiN (2:1)/EP (PMT2@EP) coating shows significant improvements in several aspects. In terms of thermal stability, the residual carbon rate at 800 °C increased from 9.38 to 11.98%. For mechanical properties, the storage modulus increased by 7.2%, the glass transition temperature (Tg) increased by 24.6%, the tensile strength increased by 42.1%, the tensile modulus increased by 60.9%, the hardness increased by 58.3%, and the flexural strength increased by 59.1%. Additionally, the coating exhibits enhanced tribological performance, with a reduction in the friction coefficient of 81.8% (from 0.555 to 0.101) and a decrease in the wear rate of 77.8% (from 11.64 × 10–5 mm3/(N m) to 2.58 × 10–5 mm3/(N m)). This biomimetic interface design provides important experimental and technical support for developing high-performance, wear-resistant, low-friction EP coatings.

Electronic capacitor films based on polymer matrices and inorganic nanofillers capable of storing more energy play a crucial role in advanced modern electrical industries and devices. Herein, a series of nanocomposite films composed of “core–shell–dot” BNNs-PDA@Ag hybrid structures with multiple breakdown strength enhancement mechanisms as fillers and methyl methacrylate-co-glycidyl methacrylate (MG) copolymers as matrices were successfully synthesized. The introduced 2D and wide-bandgap BNNs not only enhanced the breakdown strength by taking advantage of their excellent physical properties, but also further improved their energy storage properties both at ambient and elevated temperatures through the formation of deeper traps at the organic–inorganic interface. In addition, especially under a strong electric field, the Coulomb-blockade effects of Ag nanoparticles immobilized by a PDA shell layer in the heterostructure of BN nanosheets avoided the breakdown. Ultimately, the energy density of 2.0 BNNs@PDA-Ag nanocomposite films was 9.35 J cm−3 at 640 MV m−1 and room temperature with considerable efficiency (86%) under multiple breakdown strength enhancement mechanisms. Even at 90 °C and 120 °C, it still maintained energy densities of 5.46 J cm−3 and 4.32 J cm−3 with efficiencies of 84.79% and 76.81% under 460 MV m−1 and 380 MV m−1, respectively.

Ceramic membranes have been widely used in oil-water separation owing to their characteristics of high flux, excellent chemical stability, strong hydrophilicity, and good fouling resistance. To further enhance their anti-fouling performance, a co-deposition reaction was employed for the surface modification of the ceramic membranes in this study. Polyethyleneimine and dopamine were used to introduce tertiary amine groups on the surface of the ceramic membranes, and sodium 2-bromoethanesulfonate was used for the quaternization reaction with tertiary amine groups. According to the water contact angle measurements, the ceramic membrane functionalized via zwitterionic modification exhibited better hydrophilicity and thus could absorb water droplets faster than pristine ceramic membranes. Consequently, the zwitterion-functionalized ceramic membrane achieved double the permeance (40 L m −2 h −1 bar -1 ) compared to the original ceramic membrane (20 L m −2 h −1 bar -1 ) during the separation of the oil-in-water emulsion, suggesting good anti-fouling performance.

Highly integrated and power-dense electronic systems require materials that can simultaneously dissipate heat and mitigate electromagnetic interference, as both thermal hotspots and electromagnetic radiation compromise device stability and lifetime. Thermally conductive polymer composites are attractive for electronic packaging, but their performance is limited by discontinuous phonon-transport networks, filler restacking, and interfacial thermal resistance. Herein, a multiscale interfacial and architectural engineering strategy is developed to construct multifunctional polydopamine-coated exfoliated graphene/poly (vinyl alcohol) (fGNs@PDA/PVA) composite films. Commercial graphene nanosheets were first treated by CTAB-assisted exfoliation to reduce restacking and improve surface accessibility. A PDA interfacial layer was introduced as a noncovalent molecular bridge to improve graphene dispersion and interfacial coupling with PVA, while vacuum-assisted filtration and hot pressing assembled the fillers into a highly oriented layered architecture for in-plane phonon transport. The fGNs@PDA/PVA film achieved an in-plane thermal conductivity of 12.73 W m −1 K −1 at 40 wt%, corresponding to a 38.78-fold enhancement over pristine PVA and 2.8 times that of GNs/PVA. Theoretical calculations show that PDA increases the filler–matrix binding energy from 0.512 to 1.637 eV and strengthens interfacial interactions. The composite also delivered an EMI shielding effectiveness of 32 dB in the X-band and a tensile strength of 43.21 MPa, 74.1% higher than that of pure PVA. LED cooling tests further confirmed faster heat spreading and accelerated cooling of the 40 wt% fGNs@PDA/PVA film compared with pristine PVA. This work demonstrates a practical and scalable approach for designing multifunctional polymer composites capable of addressing the dual challenges of thermal management and EMI shielding in advanced electronic systems.

Epoxy resin (EP), a widely utilized thermosetting polymer, is inherently flammable and poses significant fire hazards. Drawing inspiration from the surface chemistry of mussels, this study presents the fabrication of biomimetic flame-retardant microcapsules, termed PDA@MOFs (M = Cu, Fe, Co) at room temperature and pressure for meeting the requirements of intrinsic safety. These microcapsules were synthesized through the oxidative self-polymerization of dopamine (DA) under alkaline conditions, resulting in polydopamine (PDA) on the surface of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). We incorporated these PDA@MOFs into EP matrix to evaluate their impact on the mechanical and flame-retardant properties of EP composites. Compared to unmodified EP/MOFs, EP/PDA@MOFs exhibited enhanced interfacial compatibility and improved mechanical performance. Limiting oxygen index (LOI), vertical burning (UL-94), and cone calorimetry test (CCT) confirmed that PDA@MOFs significantly enhanced the flame retardancy and smoke suppression. Among them, EP/PDA@Co-MOF demonstrated the best performance, achieving a 32.2% reduction in peak heat release rate (pHRR) and a 14.2% decrease in total heat release (THR) compared to neat EP. Furthermore, residual char analysis revealed that the flame-retardant mechanism involved physical barrier effect, catalytic char formation, and radical trapping, establishing a foundation for designing high-performance flame-retardant EP composites.

In this study, a novel organic solvent-resistant nanofiltration membrane was prepared on a polyimide ultrafiltration base membrane using a copper sulfate (CuSO 4 )/hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) oxidation triggered polydopamine (PDA)/polyethyleneimine (PEI) deposition interlayer. The PDA/PEI interlayer exhibits strong adhesion with base membrane, effectively connecting the ultrafiltration base membrane to the polyamide active layer, thus enhancing the solvent resistance of the nanofiltration membrane. The CuSO 4 /H 2 O 2 catalyst significantly reduces the deposition time of PDA/PEI on polyimide base membrane. Additionally, copper (II) ions (Cu 2+ ) can form complexes with the amino groups (NH 2 ) of the aqueous phase monomer m-phenylenediamine (MPD), thereby slowing the diffusion rate of MPD into the organic phase. The interlayer contains a significant number of hydroxyl and amino groups, which can engage in hydrogen bonding interactions with MPD, thereby further regulating the reaction rate. The resulting nanofiltration membranes exhibit excellent hydrophilicity, as demonstrated by their minimal water contact angle, and are capable of positively influencing the permeance of polar solvents. Notably, the nanofiltration membrane prepared with a deposition time of 15 min and a CuSO 4 concentration of 45 mmol/L exhibited optimal performance, achieving a methanol permeance of 16.20 L m -2 h −1 bar −1 and Rhodamine B dye rejection rate of 96.9 %. The permeance of different solvents was determined to rely on the inherent characteristics of those solvents. Furthermore, the membrane maintained good separation performance after being immersed in N, N-dimethylformamide at 80 °C for 6 days. This method offers a novel perspective for the development of nanofiltration membranes that are resistant to organic solvents.

ZIF-8 and polydopamine (PDA) double -modified melamine foam (MF), namely ZIF-8@PDA MF was fabricated using a new in-situ growth method for the co-removal of multiple organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs) from environmental water. The resulting ZIF-8@PDA MF exhibited a porous, three-dimensional (3D) cross-linked network in which ZIF-8 evenly distributed on MF via the PDA’s adhesive properties, leading to a 17-fold increase in surface area (from 1.357 to 22.964 m 2 /g) to facilitate mass transfer and target binding. Through experimental confirmation, the mechanisms of hydrogen bonding, π-π, electrostatic and hydrophobic adsorption enable the effective removal of 11 types of OPFRs including aryl-, alkyl- and Cl-OPFRs. Compared to the adsorbents reported previously, ZIF-8@PDA MF achieved higher removal efficiencies (53.8%–99.7%), particularly a 30% improvement for highly polar TEP and TCEP. The adsorption behavior of OPFRs by ZIF-8@PDA MF followed a spontaneous, endothermic process, conforming to the pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir model. The adsorption equilibrium could be reached within one hour, 2-48 times faster than most reported studies (2-48 h). In addition, ZIF-8@PDA MF was demonstrated to efficiently remove multiple OPFRs from raw environmental water and the reusability reached up to four cycles without requiring secondary separation, highlighting its practical applicability.

The performance of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) hinges on plasmonic hot spots that are both abundant and spatially uniform. Here, we propose a ligand-regulated, interface-confined growth strategy: on a bowl-like mesoporous polydopamine (PDA) scaffold, the ammoniacal silver precursor [Ag(NH 3 ) 2 ] + first forms a surface coordination layer with catechol and amine sites on PDA, lowering the activity of free Ag + and enriching Ag(I) at the interface, thereby shifting nucleation from homogeneous in the bulk to interface-confined. The ensuing constrained growth suppresses coalescence/bridging and excessive coarsening, yielding Ag nanoparticle arrays with controlled size, tunable interparticle gaps, and high spatial uniformity, and producing dense yet discrete coverage across both the inner and outer interfaces of the bowl. The concave curvature and dual-interface connectivity provide continuous coupling pathways and abundant adsorption sites, establishing a three-dimensional continuous hot-spot network. Correlative multi-technique characterization and spectroscopic analyses (SEM, EDS mapping, UV–Vis, XPS) elucidate the structure-optical-performance relationship, revealing a sparse-to-dense optimal regime and a coalescence-induced degradation regime, and identifying a precursor concentration of 50 mM as the optimal window. The resulting substrate exhibits good reproducibility for R6G (RSD ≈ 10.99 %) and affords clear molecular fingerprinting and linear quantification for pesticide analysis, with limits of detection of 55 ng mL −1 for methyl parathion and 0.209 ng mL −1 for thiram. This template-free, mild, and generalizable strategy provides a scalable route to three-dimensional plasmonic SERS substrates, leveraging PDA surface chemistry to prevent Ag aggregation at the source while constructing continuous hot spots networks.

This study designed and synthesized a Fe 3 O 4 @PDA@Ag-Au NPs nanocatalyst featuring a “core-shell-satellite” structure, aimed at efficiently reducing 4-nitrophenol through photothermal catalysis. Under 808 nm near-infrared laser irradiation, the material demonstrated exceptional photothermal performance and catalytic activity. The reduction rate of 4-nitrophenol reached 90.35 %, with a reaction rate constant of 0.1397 min −1 , significantly surpassing that of a water bath heating system at the same temperature. The high efficiency was attributed to two synergistic effects: the photothermal conversion facilitated by the polydopamine shell and the unique resonance effect exhibited by Ag-Au bimetals. This synergy elevated the system’s equilibrium temperature to 50.7 °C (12.8 °C higher than that of pure water) and generated active site pairs on the Ag-Au interface. These sites enhanced critical reaction steps, thereby reducing the activation energy to 13.8 kJ·mol −1 ,a reduction of 24.0 % compared to that observed in the water bath system (18.3 kJ·mol −1 ). This catalyst could be easily recovered using magnets and maintained over 90 % efficiency after seven cycles. By integrating photothermal catalysis, bimetallic synergy, and magnetic separation, this study presents a novel strategy for developing efficient and recyclable catalysts with significant potential for addressing nitroaromatic organic pollutants.

PDA@Fe was loaded onto BN surface, imparting abundant functional groups and enhancing carbonization performance. • High-phosphorus-content PA was grafted onto the BN/PDA@Fe surface to promote the cross-linking of the polymer into a char. • Co-Ni/B were uniformly loaded onto the BN/PDA@Fe surface to construct a hierarchical BN/PFPA@Co-Ni/B flame retardant. • The nano-reinforcing agent combines high P-N-B content with Fe, Co, Ni to achieve synergistic flame retardancy. Boron nitride (BN) is regarded as an effective nano-flame retardant due to its high thermal stability and thermal shielding effect. Here, Fe 3+ -doped polydopamine (PDA@Fe) was first immobilized on the BN surface to provide abundant functional groups and enhance its catalytic carbonization capability. Subsequently, high-phosphorus phytic acid (PA) and cobalt-nickel borate nanosheets (Co-Ni/B) were loaded onto the BN/PDA@Fe surface to prepare the BN/PFPA@Co-Ni/B composite flame-retardant material. Notably, this multi-level structured nano-reinforcer combines the synergistic flame-retardant effect of high P-N-B content with the highly efficient catalytic charring ability of multiple metal ions (Fe, Co, Ni). Notably, the BN/PFPA@Co-Ni/B/EP composite coating achieved the lowest back surface temperature (167.9 °C) and exhibited the highest expansion height (25.2 mm) and expansion ratio (19.69), demonstrating its excellent thermal insulation performance. Furthermore, the BN/PFPA@Co-Ni/B/EP composite coating exhibited the highest residual carbon content (29.9%) and the lowest smoke density (39.2%). This can be attributed to the strong catalytic pyrolysis effect of the multi-metal ions, which converts more pyrolysis intermediates into stable carbon, thereby increasing carbon residue while reducing smoke emissions. Microstructural analysis revealed a dense and intact carbon layer, providing strong support for its exceptional thermal protection performance. The successful preparation of this novel flame retardant, which combines high barrier properties, high phosphorus and nitrogen content, and multi-metal-catalyzed carbonization, offers a new approach for developing high-performance refractory coatings.
