Abstract Superhydrophobic cotton fabrics with improved ultraviolet resistance were prepared via in situ growing NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti)(Ti-MOF) nanoparticles on cotton fibers and subsequently coating with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) under room temperature. The synergetic effect of Ti-MOFs nanoparticles and PDMS was critical and essential for obtaining a superhydrophobic coating with anti-UV property. The surface microstructure, chemical composition, and superhydrophobic property of the as-prepared fabrics were characterized by K/S value, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, and water contact angle (WCA) measurements. The as-prepared cotton fabrics not merely exhibited desirable superhydrophobic property with a water contact angle (WCA) of 154.7 ± 0.7° and a sliding angle of 3.6°, but also displayed the considerable UV resistance. The oil–water separation, stability of UV protection and superhydrophobicity were also investigated. The superhydrophobicity, anti-ultraviolet property, and K/S value of as-prepared PDMS/Ti-MOFs@cotton fabrics were stable after 300 cycles of abrasion and 5 cycles of washing. The facile synthesis technique provided a simple method for scalable construction of multifunctional fabrics. Graphic abstract

Wood-based composite phase change materials (PCMs) have considerable development potential in shape-stable thermal energy storage . However, Wood-based composite PCMs possess inflammability due to wood-based supporting materials and organic PCM , which limits its practical application. In this work, a novel strategy of wood-based composite PCMs with flame retardant coating is adopted, in which the introduction of expanded graphite (EG)-based coating can not only enhance the flame retardant property, and EG can be used as photothermal material to improve the photothermal conversion efficiency. The flame-retardant wood-based composite PCMs show excellent flame retardant properties, which peak of heat release rate (pHRR) is reduced by 40.1–52.3% compared with PEG-1000@delignified wood (DW). It is worth noting that when the amount of EG is >0.5 g, the flame-retardant wood-based composite PCMs can be completely protected in the ignition combustion test, and the combustion flame is extinguished by itself. The loading mass fraction of the PEG-1000 of the flame-retardant wood-based composite PCMs is 53.1–73.4%, which shows that it has good energy storage performance. At the same time, the flame-retardant wood-based composite PCMs still have good cycle reliability after 100 heating-cooling cycles. Due to the excellent light absorption properties of EG, the flame-retardant wood-based composite PCMs exhibit excellent photothermal conversion efficiency (68.1–80.0%), which has considerable application potential in solar energy utilization systems and thermal management.

The rapid advancement in intelligent bionics has elevated electronic skin to a pivotal component in bionic robots, enabling swift responses to diverse external stimuli. Combining wearable touch sensors with IoT technology lays the groundwork for achieving the versatile functionality of electronic skin. However, most current touch sensors rely on capacitive layer deformations induced by pressure, leading to changes in capacitance values. Unfortunately, sensors of this kind often face limitations in practical applications due to their uniform sensing capabilities. This study presents a novel approach by incorporating graphitic carbon nitride (GCN) into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) at a low concentration. Surprisingly, this blend of materials with higher dielectric constants yields composite films with lower dielectric constants, contrary to expectations. Unlike traditional capacitive sensors, our non-contact touch sensors exploit electric field interference between the object and the sensor’s edge, with enhanced effects from the low dielectric constant GCN/PDMS film. Consequently, we have fabricated touch sensor grids using an array configuration of dispensing printing techniques, facilitating fast response and ultra-low-limit contact detection with finger-to-device distances ranging from 5 to 100 mm. These sensors exhibit excellent resolution in recognizing 3D object shapes and accurately detecting positional motion. Moreover, they enable real-time monitoring of array data with signal transmission over a 4G network. In summary, our proposed approach for fabricating low dielectric constant thin films, as employed in non-contact touch sensors, opens new avenues for advancing electronic skin technology.

Raman studies have consistently emphasized the precise detection of target analytes by strategically manipulating the morphology and structure of noble metal nanomaterials. In this study, the nanorods with Ag shell and Au nanobipyramid core (Au NBPs@Ag) were designed and prepared through the weting chemcial method. The length of the nanorods can be adjusted from 131 ± 8 nm to 165 ± 23 nm by controlling the amount of Ag precursor, while keeping their width constant. According to the size of Au NBPs@Ag nanorods, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) performance would change significantly, and the optimal signal response was achieved when the aspect ratio of Au NBPs@Ag nanorods was 4.43. This can be due to the synergistic effect of gold core and silver shell changed by nanorods morphology, which further affected SERS performance. Moreover, Au NBPs@Ag modified polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) flexible substrate was developed through interface self-assembly technology, allowing for sampling on irregular surfaces. The flexible SERS substrate was successfully applied to detect malachite green in contaminated river bass with wide linear range from 0.1 nM to 10 μM and detection limit of 0.1 nM. These results indicated that Au NBPs@Ag nanorods SERS substrate had great potential in the rapid trace detection of environmental detection and food safety.

A superhydrophobic PDMS/DTMS-SiO 2 @PLA membrane with a porous layered three-dimensional rough structure was obtained by a simple phase separation method for the preparation of polylactic acid (PLA) membrane with the addition of a layer of functionalized DTMS-SiO 2 nanoparticles. SEM, EDS, XPS, TGA, and FTIR were used to characterize the surface morphology and chemical composition of the PDMS/DTMS-SiO 2 @PLA membrane. The static water contact angle of the modified membrane could reach 160.7°. The high hydrophobicity remained after 50 abrasion experiments, and the WCA was still greater than 150° after 4 hours of immersion in different pH solutions. For petroleum ether, n-hexane, n-heptane, and isooctane mixtures with water, the modified membrane exhibited excellent oil-water separation capabilities in separation flux and efficiency. Meanwhile, the modified membrane also has good resistance to contamination and self-cleaning ability. Due to the advantages of simple preparation, degradable materials, mechanical stability, chemical resistance, excellent oil-water separation capability, good anti-pollution, and self-cleaning ability, superhydrophobic PDMS/DTMS-SiO 2 @PLA membrane can be applied to practical oil-water separation.

In the bottom-up vat photopolymerization process for ceramic materials, the as-built part is generated layer-by-layer from the bottom of the slurry vat. The separation process between the solidified layer and the bottom of the slurry vat introduces significant vertical separation forces due to various resistance forces. Particularly in fabricating large cross-section parts, larger separation forces are more prone to induce crack propagation or detachment of the as-built part from the substrate, resulting in printing failures. This study introduces a novel approach involving the application of a talcum powder-coated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film to address this issue, aiming to reduce the adhesion between the PDMS film and the bottom of the slurry vat. The developed system exhibits flexible separation capabilities during the build platform's lifting process. Compared to traditional unmodified PDMS film separation systems, the modified system demonstrates an average reduction of 93% in the maximum separation force. Notably, as the cross-sectional area of the printing increases, the magnitude of the increase in maximum separation force of the modified system compared to the unmodified system drops significantly. This characteristic facilitates the successful printing of larger-sized parts. The talcum powder-coated PDMS separation system proves effective in successfully printing aviation ceramic cores, triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) models, teeth model with a cross-sectional size of 85 mm × 65 mm in solid geometry and a bone model exceeding 150 mm in height.

The detection of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in peripheral blood is a novel and accurate technique for the early diagnosis of cancers. However, this method is challenging because of the need for high collection efficiency due to the ultralow content and similar size of CTCs compared with other blood cells. To address the aforementioned issue, we proposed a homoporous polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membrane and its microfilter device to perform the ultrafast isolation and identification of CTCs directly from peripheral blood without any labeling treatment. The membrane pores can be homogenously controlled at a size of 6.3 μm through the cross-linking time of PDMS during a filtration-coating strategy. Within only 10 s, the designed device achieved a retention rate greater than 70% for pancreatic cancer cells, and it exhibited excellent cell compatibility to support cell proliferation. The isolated CTCs on this membrane can be easily observed and identified using a fluorescence microscope.

Paper emerges as an ideal substrate for flexible piezoresistive pressure sensors (PRSs) due to its inherent flexibility, cost-effectiveness, renewability, and lightweight properties. However, the intrinsic hydrophilicity of original paper poses substantial challenges for practical sensor applications. Herein, we coated Ti 3 C 2 T x @ZIF-8@PDA@AgNPs (TZPA) and PDMS/CaCO 3 on the surface of paper by facile spray-coating technique to prepare paper-based superhydrophobic flexible PRSs. By employing a bioinspired micro-cracked architecture derived from crustacean sensory systems, the sensor exhibited exceptional sensing properties: three linear sensitivity regions (S 1 = 1.36 kPa −1 , 0–3 kPa; S 2 = 8.71 kPa −1 , 3–10 kPa; S 3 = 0.81 kPa −1 , 10–30 kPa), rapid response/recovery times (98.1/97.9 ms), and stable operation over 500 cycles. The superhydrophobic PDMS/CaCO 3 layer, with its micro-nano structure and low surface energy, imparted the paper-based sensor with excellent waterproofing (water contact angle ∼151.1° and water sliding angle ∼9°), self-cleaning, and synergistic antibacterial properties when combined with the TZPA layer. Finally, the fabricated paper-based PRS demonstrated real-time detection capabilities for human bodily motions (including large/small movements) even under high-moisture conditions and underwater. Presented here is an environmentally friendly and simple method for fabricating superhydrophobic paper-based PRSs which have significant potential in the fields of wearable electronics, healthcare surveillance and human–computer interaction, even in aqueous environments.

Strong winds can make a bridge's cable-stayed cables produce violent vibrations, leading to fatigue of the cable-stayed cables and damaging the cable-stayed bridge's structure. Accurately and effectively obtaining data on the wind loads applied to the cable-stayed cables is important for assessing the cable-stayed cables' health. The existing sensing elements for detection include diffusion silicon piezoresistive sensor, strain gauge, and other rigid sensors. However, most of them present such disadvantages as rigidity, difficult to fit the curved surface, high cost and low sensitivity. And it cannot be directly installed on the surface of the cable. In this paper, a conductive hydrogel flexible pressure sensor based on TA/CB@PDMS was developed, using carbon black (CB) as the main conductive medium, with good electrical conductivity, high sensitivity (0.65 kPa−1) and excellent tensile properties (210% tensile breakage). Meanwhile, a salt permeation method (Soak the sensor in LiBr solution) was used to effectively inhibit the sensor's water from being evaporated and frozen. Its substrate incorporates tannic acid to increase the sensor's adhesion so that it adheres well to the diagonal cable's surface. In this paper, the wind speed variation around the diagonal cable and the force distribution on the surface with considering the fluid-structure coupling effect are analyzed by ANSYS WORKBECH finite element simulation. Wind tunnel experiments simulate the sensor's force response when the inclined cable is subjected to different wind speeds, and the detection accuracy reaches 96.17%. The results show the sensor developed in this paper can realize accurate wind pressure detection of the inclined cable. This study provides a new method for wind pressure detection and health inspection of diagonal cables.

Three-dimensional paper-based microfluidic devices have great potential in various applications, including point-of-care diagnostics, environmental monitoring, and tissue engineering. However, their fabrication is still limited to stacking and origami methods, in which auxiliary equipment is needed to maintain the layers in tightly connected junctions. Inspired by the art of bamboo braiding in China, we developed a novel fabrication technique based on the braiding concept to create three-dimensional paper-based microfluidic devices with PDMS-impregnated paper substrates as the building units. The resulting three-dimensional paper device brings unique advantages, including compactness, facile disassembly, and real-time flow visualization. The multiplexed glucose analysis with a braided device integrated with 16-switchable valves for flow control was further fabricated to demonstrate the device's applicability. We envision braiding-based fabrication technology opening new possibilities and bringing broad applications for three-dimensional paper microfluidic devices.

A strategy for fabrication of macroporous hydrogels through 3D printing assisted by molding and multiple microfluidic bubble-templating nozzles is proposed here. This approach aims to address the challenges faced by methods for 3D printing macroporous hydrogels, such as difficulties in precisely controlling the spatial distribution of macropores, limited porosity, and low resolution of external boundaries due to the poor mechanical properties of hydrogel solutions as printing ink. In this method, fast-switching microfluidic bubble-templating nozzles of varying sizes allowed for precise control of target pore sizes over a wide range. Cavities of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) molds were used to define the overall external shape of the hydrogels and enhance the resolution of the boundaries. During the printing process, the laminar shear force generated by a coaxial microfluidic system generated microbubbles which were then injected into the PDMS mold cavities. The spatial distribution of the microbubble clusters within the cavities was controlled by a 3D motion module. Finally, macroporous hydrogels with a pore size range of 238–930 μm were fabricated while avoiding millimeter round corners on the boundaries. A control precision of pore sizes was about 60 μm. Most importantly, this strategy broke through the space occupancy limitations of pores in traditional 3D printing methods for macroporous hydrogels. The space occupancy of pores could reach a maximum of about 87% within a single layer.

Soft actuators composed of shape memory alloy (SMA) wires embedded in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix hold potential for shape-morphing structures and soft robots. However, SMA exhibits poor bonding with PDMS due to its smooth and nonpolar surfaces. Nanoparticles show promise in interfacial strengthening of polymer composites. In this work, KH590 was used to modify nano-Al 2 O 3 particles and deposited on the SMA surface, creating a three-dimensional nanostructure bridging SMA and PDMS to enhance interface strength. The synergistic effects of particle size and content of nano-Al 2 O 3 particles on the interface strength were investigated in detail. It founds that interfacial strength decreased exponentially with particle size at content of 1 wt%, while when the content exceeds 1 wt%, the interface strength firstly increases with the particle size and then decreases in a logarithmic trend. Specifically, the interface strength is enhanced by 110 % with 3 wt% 50 nm particles. The interface enhancement mechanism was also discussed. The proposed nanoparticle modification approach was to strengthen SMA/PDMS interphase by increasing and extending fracture path, consuming more fracture energy. Chemical cross-linking also contributed to interface enhancement. This work enhances understanding of interfacial bonding mechanisms and provides valuable guide for interfacial strengthening of SMA/PDMS.
