Vast volume expansion of Si-based materials severely deteriorates the electrochemical performance of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). To overcome this problem, we designed and synthesized Si@NiAl-LDH (layered double hydroxide) hybrid composites with the unique hollow core-shell structure via a re-precipitation and in situ growth process. In principle, the core of Si nanoparticles (Si NPs) can contribute to a high Li-storage capacity, the void space between the shell of LDH and the Si-core can effectively tolerate the volume expansion of Si NPs, and the shell can maintain the structural integrity and contribute to the electrochemical performance as well. As demonstrated, when used as the anode materials of LIBs, Si@NiAl-LDH exhibited much enhanced electrochemical performance as compared with the LDHs. The Si@NiAl-LDH electrode had a reversible capacity of 534 mAhg −1 after 60 cycles at 50 mAg −1 while that of NiAl-LDH was 343 mAhg −1 only. Regarding the rate performance, the Si@NiAl-LDH electrode could revert to 565 mAhg −1 after a rate test, while that of NiAl-LDH electrode was 353 mAhg −1 only. Obviously, the obtained clear structure-property relationship of the anode materials will be very conducive to the design and synthesis of the high-performance next-generation materials for energy storage and conversion.

Due to its high theoretical capacity and plentiful deposits, Si has been extensively explored as a potential anode material for lithium-ion batteries. Research on Si-based materials is currently concentrated on problems like enhancing the volume effect (by around 300%) and the electrical conductivity of Si. As a result, using the electrostatic spinning method, Si@NiO@Carbon Nanofibers (CNFs) anodes with dual modifications were created in this research. A more stable and substantial specific capacity for lithium-ion batteries is achieved due to the unique structure's amelioration of the agglomeration phenomena, volume expansion effect, and low conductivity of Si nanoparticles . At a high current density of 3 A/g, it has an excellent reversible specific capacity, and after 1000 cycles in a lithium-ion battery, it still has a specific capacity of 861.77 mAh/g. Exhibits favorable rate performance at various current densities. In addition, after 1000 cycles, the surface of the Si@NiO@CNFs electrode is smooth, the structure is undamaged, and the cross-sectional thickness expands by approximately 23.19%. As a high-performance energy storage material , Si-based anode material with twofold modification has many potential applications. By designing the structure of the Si cladding layer , this study offers a novel, efficient, and practicable solution for the rapid capacity decline of Si materials.

Silicon/carbon (Si/C) composites have emerged as promising anode materials for next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to their high power and energy density, but managing the stress resulting from the large volume change of Si during charging and discharging remains a major challenge. To address this issue, we present a novel microsized porous Si/C-based anode design (AC_Si/C) that incorporates Si@C core–shell nanoparticles and hollow carbon nanospheres as deformable cushions fabricated using a scalable microemulsion approach. Our hybrid anode material system offers high ion and electron conductivity and efficient stress mitigation via the deformable hollow carbon nanospheres, resulting in improved cycling and rate performance. Finite element simulations reveal the stress mitigation mechanisms of the hollow carbon nanospheres, and the AC_Si/C nanostructure exhibits a high reversible specific capacity (855.3 mA h g–1 at 2 A g–1 over 500 cycles) and good capacity reservation for rate performance tests under various current densities. The microemulsion-based synthesis method enables large-scale production of porous Si/C nanocomposites as high-performance commercial anode material systems, demonstrating the potential of this air cushion-inspired design for the development of next-generation high-performance LIBs.

Constructing novel heterojunctions has become an effective strategy to improve the performance of photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensors, but most of the glucose-sensing photoelectrodes involve enzyme modification and disordered or semi-closed surface topography which restricts the working environment and sensing performance. Herein, the dense and burr-like CuO nanospikes (CuONSs) are grown on all over the whole surfaces of the relatively-sparse and ordered Si nanowires (SiNWs) by a combination of magnetron sputtering and hydrothermal growth. The optimized SiNWs-CuONSs heterojunction with a core–shell structure achieves the enzyme-free PEC detection of glucose with a sensitivity of 2324.09 μA mM −1 cm −2 in the concentration range of 0–1.0 mM and a detection limit of 0.74 μM (Signal/Noise = 3). The excellent sensing performance is ascribed to that (1) the SiNWs with a large specific surface area acting as host have open-style surface topography, ensuring the analyte flowability; (2) the CuONSs with a desired glucose-catalytic activity are hierarchical, providing a great number of active sites; and (3) the SiNWs-CuONSs heterojunction has a satisfactory optical absorption and a high efficiency of the photogenerated-hole transfer. This work demonstrates that the enzyme-free and highly-sensitive glucose detection can be realized by morphology-controllable heterojunction, and provides an alternative route to noninvasive sensing.

The Si nanowires/ZnFe 2 O 4 /Ag composite photocatalyst is prepared by metal-assisted chemical etching and hydrothermal methods . Photoelectric conversion and photodegradation experiments show that the composite structure offers high photocatalytic performance under visible light. The photocurrent density of Si nanowires/ZnFe 2 O 4 /Ag is 1.76 mA/cm 2 , and the Methyl orange photodegradation rate is 19 % within 90 min. Furthermore, the photocatalytic activity of composite photocatalysts was studied under the magnetic field, which further improves the photocatalytic efficiency significantly. Energy band structure studies revealed that the interfacial contact in the Si nanowires/ZnFe 2 O 4 /Ag increases carrier transfer and charge separation, thereby improving photocatalytic performance. It can be seen from the I-V results that the Si nanowires/ZnFe 2 O 4 /Ag has a negative magnetoresistance . Therefore, in the presence of a magnetic field, photogenerated carriers can be more effectively transferred to the electrode surface to participate in the photocatalytic reaction with improved photocatalytic performance.

FeCoNiMnSi x (x = 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5) HEAs were synthesized by utilizing a novel high-energy ball-milling technique. When the Si content reached 0.3, the phase structure will transform from FCC to BCC. In terms of high-temperature oxidation resistance, Si may dramatically minimize the oxidation level of the alloys at high temperatures, hence improving the high-temperature oxidation resistance . The addition of Si to the alloys had slight influence on the corrosion resistance . Additionally, incorporating an appropriate amount of Si may also reduce magnetic loss, promote impedance matching, and improve electromagnetic-wave loss capabilities. FeCoNiMnSi 0.3 exhibits good electromagnetic-wave absorption capability with a minimum reflection loss value of − 48.6 dB at 4.24 GHz and an effective absorption width of 4.81 GHz at 2.03 mm thickness. This study is necessary for the investigation of electromagnetic-wave materials with practical applications at high temperatures.

Silicon as one of the most promising anode materials suffers from its low electronic conductivity and large volume changes during the lithiation/delithiation processes, resulting in a huge capacity fading upon cycling. Herein, we design a single-wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) coating on the silicon/carbon (Si/C) electrode to improve its cycling performance. By this simple configuration, the commercial Si/C electrode delivers a high reversible capacity of 653.8 mA h g −1 at current density of 65 mA g −1 and exhibits excellent cycling stability with capacity retention 79.8% after 150 cycles. As expected, the SWCNT layer on the surface of electrode improves the electronic conductivity of the electrode and serves as a barrier layer to prevent the electrode surface from cracking and delaminating, which gives the best reversible capacity and longer life cycle. This design can eliminate much more complicated processes for providing some potential in commercial applications.

Promoting bone regeneration while inhibiting bacterial infection is still clinical challenge in the repair of infectious bone defects. Herein, a vancomycin-loaded silica coating with controlled release of drug and Si ions was prepared on polymer matrix via layer-by-layer assembly, to construct a functional composite coating scaffold with antibacterial function and enhanced bone regeneration capacity. Different release behavior and antibacterial effect were achieved by alternating or sequential deposition on the scaffold surface. In vitro study showed that both the alternating and the sequential coatings could promote osteogenic differentiation of bone mesenchymal stem cells, and the sequential coating exhibited a higher bacteriostatic rate of 97 % against Staphylococcus aureus . In vivo study of infectious bone defect model demonstrated that the sequential coating with an outer layer of vancomycin allowed more sufficient antibacterial treatment in the early stage of infection and achieved superior bone regeneration consequently. Transcriptomic analysis indicated that the vancomycin loading in the silica coating played an antibacterial role without interfering with the bone-promoting process of silicon ions, and revealed that the mechanism of osteogenic promotion was based on the activation of osteo/angio-genic related genes expression and corresponding signaling pathways. This study demonstrates an effective strategy to design functional composite scaffolds for complex infectious bone repair.

The low yield of MXene is normally related to the delaminating step, contributing to the key technical challenges in moving toward industrial applications. Here, a shearing-force-driven strategy is proposed for re-exfoliating waste MXene residue to prepare oxidatively stable MXene composites in a low-cost manner, where the strong shear stress in the assisted solvent, such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs), chitosan (CS), and polyacrylamide (PAM) aqueous solutions, acts on the surface of MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) through coordination between hydroxyl and Ti atoms, resulting in a rapid and efficient exfoliation of waste Ti 3 C 2 T x residue under stirring. Furthermore, this formed coordinate bond helps to stabilize the low-valent Ti atoms on the surface of MXene, thereby enhancing the oxidative stability of Ti 3 C 2 T x . Besides, the CNT@MXene composite is selected to construct a free-standing membrane to encapsulate Si nanoparticles, achieving a high and reversible capacity after 50 cycles. This work supports the concept of valorizing waste and adopts a fluid shear force-assisted method to re-exfoliate waste residues, which greatly reduces the cost of processing and improves the chemical stability of MXene. More importantly, this work has uncovered a new direction for the commercialization of MXene composites and has significantly improved the real-world applications of MXene-based materials. This work investigated the feasibility and efficiency of a heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalyst, Fe/Si codoped TiO2, for the degradation of metronidazole (MNZ) under visible light irradiation. The Fe/Si codoped TiO2 was prepared via a facile and simple sol–gel solvothermal process followed by annealing at 480 °C for 4 hours. High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements revealed that the photo-Fenton process did not change the structure, textural and surface morphologies of this catalyst. Elemental mapping results indicated the good dispersion of Fe and Si ions in TiO2. Nitrogen adsorption and desorption measurements indicated that Si doping increased the surface area of the catalysts. The Fe and Si doping narrowed the band gap of TiO2. They also facilitated the transfer of photo-generated electrons from TiO2 to Fe(III). Under visible light irradiation and the optimum operating conditions, MNZ could be completely degraded in 50 min by this catalyst within a wide pH range. Hydroxyl radicals and holes were verified to be responsible for degrading MNZ. The leaching of iron ions was less than 0.047 ppm even after illuminating the catalyst for 6 hours, indicating the good stability of the Fe/Si codoped TiO2. The as-prepared catalysts with excellent catalytic activity, and remarkable reusability and stability could provide a new insight into the preparation of photocatalysts and have wide applications for antibiotics removal.

Bone grafting materials for repair of alveolar bone deficits have improved markedly in recent years, increasing the applicability and success of oral implantology. The long-term success rate of dental implant surgery is strongly dependent on the quality and stability of residual bone tissue. Therefore, reconstruction of resorbed alveolar bone is a challenge for clinicians. In the present study, we have developed bioactive bone regeneration particles (BRPs) using amorphous calcium phosphate and 58S bioglass as raw materials. The structural characteristics, biocompatibility, and osteoinductivity of these BRPs were compared to commercially available bovine spongy bone (BSB) without organic components. X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that BRPs were composed of β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) and calcium silicate in the form of hexagonal crystals, while BSB was mainly hydroxyapatite (HA) arranged in orderly nano-sized crystals. The viability of human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (hBMSCs) cultured in BRP-containing medium was roughly equal to that of hBMSCs in control medium. Moreover, hBMSCs in BRP medium exhibited greater proliferation rates, substrate attachment, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, alizarin red staining intensity, and expression levels of osteogenic-related genes (COL-I, OCN, Runx-2, ALP, BSP) than hBMSCs in BSB medium, indicating the superior osteoinductivity of BRPs. Silicon ions released from BRPs during cell culture were crucial for these enhanced biological properties. BRPs also demonstrated superior osteoconduction and osteoinduction properties for bone defect repair, suggesting promise for alveolar bone repair surgery.

Various graphene-based Si nanocomposites have been reported to improve the performance of active materials in Li-ion batteries. However, these candidates still yield severe capacity fading due to the electrical disconnection and fractures caused by the huge volume changes over extended cycles. Therefore, we have designed a novel three-dimensional cross-linked graphene and single-wall carbon nanotube structure to encapsulate the Si nanoparticles. The synthesized three-dimensional structure is attributed to the excellent self-assembly of carbon nanotubes with graphene oxide as well as a thermal treatment process at 900 °C. This special structure provides sufficient void spaces for the volume expansion of Si nanoparticles and channels for the diffusion of ions and electrons. In addition, the cross-linking of the graphene and single-wall carbon nanotubes also strengthens the stability of the structure. As a result, the volume expansion of the Si nanoparticles is restrained. The specific capacity remains at 1450 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles at 200 mA g−1. This well-defined three-dimensional structure facilitates superior capacity and cycling stability in comparison with bare Si and a mechanically mixed composite electrode of graphene, single-wall carbon nanotubes and silicon nanoparticles.
