In this study, copper (Cu) nanoparticles (NPs)-modified Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets (Ti 3 C 2 T x @Cu) were synthesized via chemical reduction. Subsequently, Ti 3 C 2 T x @Cu/Cu composite powder was synthesized via low-energy ball milling, followed by rapid hot pressing to fabricate Ti 3 C 2 T x @Cu/Cu composites. The influence of Ti 3 C 2 T x @Cu content on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and tribological performance of Ti 3 C 2 T x @Cu/Cu composites was systematically investigated. With increasing Ti 3 C 2 T x @Cu content (0–10 vol%), the Brinell hardness of the composites gradually increased, while the tensile strength showed an initial increase to a maximum of 311.59 MPa at 3 vol%, and then gradually decreased. The main reason for this improvement was the enhancement effect of Ti 3 C 2 T x @Cu. Moreover, Ti 3 C 2 T x @Cu effectively enhanced the tribological performance of the Cu matrix, attributed to the synergistic effect of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets and Cu NPs. These components could get adsorbed onto the surface of the friction pairs and induce tribochemical reactions, resulting in the formation of Fe 2 O 3 and CuO. Consequently, a stable protective film composed of Fe 2 O 3 /CuO/Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene was formed on the worn surface, thereby reducing friction.

Pathogenic bacteria represent a considerable threat to public health and food safety, necessitating the development of advanced detection methodologies. In this study, a novel fluorescence sensing platform based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) was established to detect Pathogenic bacteria with rapid response, exceptional sensitivity, and stable selectivity. Using carboxyl-modified Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x -COOH) as nanocarriers, double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) were assembled to functionalize the MXene for rapidly efficient quenching of fluorescence dye-labeled aptamers and specific recognition of target bacteria. Upon the incorporation of target bacteria, the aptamer preferentially bound to bacteria, dissociating from the MXene and resulting in a significant and rapid increase in fluorescence intensity. Using E. coli O157:H7 and S. aureus as exemplar biotargets, the sensor demonstrated ultra-sensitive detection of E. coli O157:H7 and S. aureus with limits of detection (LOD, S/N = 3) as low as 0.61 CFU/mL and 1.62 CFU/mL, respectively, within a rapid response time of 15 min, thereby demonstrating superior performance in comparison to the majority of existing FRET-based biosensors. Moreover, this method demonstrates excellent reproducibility and stability, having been successfully applied to spiked milk samples. The recovery rates for S. aureus ranged from 90.2 % to 114.3 %, with acceptable RSDs of 1.4 % to 7.4 %, while those for E. coli O157:H7 ranged from 91.7 % to 93.6 %, with acceptable RSDs of 5.2 % to 8.7 %, confirming its strong potential for practical sample analysis. The present study establishes a foundational framework for subsequent research into biosensors for detecting targets and provides a new pathway for the analysis of other biological factors.

Layered double hydroxides (LDH) and two-dimensional metal carbides (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) garner significant attention in recent years. LDH/Ti 3 C 2 T x nanohybrids combine the unique characteristics of individual component, making them a promising option for high-power energy storage applications. Here, we present a composite electrode constructed by synergistic coupling of Ti 3 C 2 T x and ternary hydrotalcite (NiCoMn-LDH). Strong interfacial interactions between the NiCoMn-LDH array and Ti 3 C 2 T x nanoflakes, along with effective electron coupling, contribute to enhanced structural stability, conductivity, and electrolyte accessibility, thereby significantly promoting the kinetics of redox reactions . The intriguing “lace-like” structure fully utilizes the high activity of NiCoMn-LDH and the excellent conductivity of Ti 3 C 2 T x , allowing LDH/Ti 3 C 2 T x to exhibit an impressive output capacitance of 1102.9 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 , coupled with notable rate capability (66.87 % at 20 A g −1 ). The constructed LDH/Ti 3 C 2 T x //AC hybrid supercapacitor (HSC) achieves a remarkable energy density of 47.3 Wh kg −1 at 800 W kg −1 . Following 5000 cycles, the specific capacity of HSC decreases by merely 8.3 %, while achieving a Coulombic efficiency of 99 %, showcasing remarkable durability and reversible reaction characteristics. This study provides a streamlined and effective methodology for crafting LDH/Ti 3 C 2 T x nanohybrids, showcasing robust coupled interfaces and exceptional electrochemical energy storage application.

The inferior tribological properties of titanium (Ti) and its alloys, due to their limited work hardening capability and the mechanical instability of their oxide scale, pose substantive challenges in practical applications. Surface texturing and the application of 2D material coatings are acknowledged as efficacious strategies for enhancing these properties. Nevertheless, the rapid loss of effectiveness when employing these methods in isolation highlights a significant limitation. Herein, a 50-nm-thick MXene nanocoating is deposited onto groove-textured pure Ti surface, effectuating a reduction in the coefficient of friction (COF) from ≈0.57 to 0.17, thereby substantially mitigating wear on the Ti substrate. The grooved surface architecture plays a vital role in storing MXenes and facilitating lubricant replenishment through the stirring effect of frictional stress during subsequent friction process. Further, the continuous decomposition and reorganization of MXene coating results in the formation of a robust tribofilm that resists oxidation and plastic deformation in the subsurface layer, markedly enhancing the friction and wear resistance. These findings are crucial for improving tribological performance in Ti and its alloys and provide a straightforward yet effective strategy for tailoring their tribological properties by integrating LST with 2D material nanocoating.

MXenes have shown great potential for supercapacitor electrodes due to their unique characteristics, but simultaneously achieving high capacitance, rate capability, and cyclic stability along with good mechanical flexibility is exceptionally challenging. Here, highly enhanced capacitance, rate capability, and cyclic stability, as well as good mechanical flexibility for T3C2Tx MXene-based supercapacitor electrodes are simultaneously obtained by engineering the electrode structure, modifying the surface chemistry, and optimizing the fabrication process via an optimized integration approach. This approach combines and more importantly optimizes three methods that all require a calcination process: carbonizing in situ grown polymer (“Cpolymer”) on the MXene, alkali treatment (“A”), and template sacrificing (“P”); and the optimized processes lead to more abundant active sites, faster ion accessibility, better chemical stability, and good mechanical flexibility. The obtained P-MXene/Cpolymer-A electrodes are binder-free and self-supporting and not only have good mechanical flexibility but also demonstrate much larger capacitances and better rate performance than the pristine MXene electrode. Specifically, the P-MXene/CPAQ-A electrode (PAQ: quinone-amine polymer) achieves a high capacitance of 532.9 F g–1 at 5 mV s–1, together with superior rate performance and improved cyclic stability (97.1% capacitance retention after 40 000 cycles at 20 A g–1) compared with the pristine MXene (79.6% retention) and P-MXene-A (77.3% retention) electrodes. In addition, it is discovered that carbonizing in situ grown polymers can variously remove the −F group and the removal effect can be accumulated with that by the alkali treatment.

With the development of deep space exploration technology, it is particularly important to prepare a lightweight composite material with both electromagnetic and radiation shielding properties. Fe 3 O 4 has been widely used in the field of electromagnetic shielding due to its properties, while not much research has been done on Fe 3 O 4 in the field of radiation shielding. In this study, Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles achieving a uniform distribution between multilayer MXene (i.e., Ti 3 C 2 T x ), which not only demonstrates excellent dispersion within epoxy resin but also prevents the collapse of the Ti 3 C 2 T x layers, thus inheriting excellent gamma-rays absorption properties. Simultaneously, the presence of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles has been demonstrated to increase the Fe concentration on the Ti 3 C 2 T x surface, thereby restricting the free movement of gamma-rays and optimizing its permittivity. The Fe 3 O 4 @Ti 3 C 2 T x /EP composite material has a high linear attenuation coefficient (0.71 cm −1 ) and outstanding gamma-ray shielding capability. The incorporation of Fe 3 O 4 @Ti 3 C 2 T x increases the shielding performance of the material by up to 6 times compared to epoxy resin. This work presents an avenue for the development of light-weight gamma ray shielding packaging materials.

Two-dimensional transition metal carbide/nitride MXenes have become a hot topic in the field of lithium-ion energy storage due to their unique surface chemistry and excellent electronic conductivity. However, electrodes made of multilayer MXenes suffer from low capacity, poor cycling performance, and slow lithiation kinetics. In this paper, the MoP2@Ti3C2Tx composite was prepared by adsorbing Mo cations on the surface of Ti3C2Tx followed by phosphatization. The uniformly distributed MoP2 nanostructure effectively increases the layer spacing, enlarges the specific surface area, and improves the structural stability of the material. At the same time, MoP2 and Ti3C2Tx are connected by a P−O bond, which accelerates the diffusion and migration of lithium ions and the charge transfer, and the strong covalent Ti−O−P bond can cause rapid charge transfer and stabilize the structure of the material. The electrochemical activity of MoP2 nanostructures also provides more active sites for lithium ions. The presence of the lamellar structure of Ti3C2Tx also inhibits to some extent the expansion of the transition metal phosphide volume with the cycling process, thus realizing more excellent lithium storage capacity. 1/2 MoP2@Ti3C2Tx material has a high reversible capacity of 165.7 mAh g−1 (172% improvement over the original material) at a current density of 3000 mA g−1. The assembled 1/2 MoP2@Ti3C2Tx//AC Li-ion hybrid capacitor LIC has 85.5% capacity retention after cycling at a current density of 1500 mA g−1. The ability of the assembled full battery to illuminate light-emitting diode (LED) light bulbs further confirms that the electrochemical reliability of the device meets the requirements of real-world applications. The results demonstrate that the strategy of constructing in situ-grown MoP2 nanostructures can effectively improve MXene high-energy-density applications in lithium-ion energy storage.

Flexible dielectrics with exceptional dielectric properties are highly desirable for various electronic applications. In this study, we successfully fabricated CaCu 3 Ti 4 O 12 (CCTO)/Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene/millable polyurethane (MPU) ternary composite films via a combination of mixing and hot compression techniques. The incorporation of 2D Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets at a mass fraction of 4 % significantly enhanced the dielectric properties of the composite films. Specifically, the dielectric constant at 100 Hz increased to 41.1, representing a 14.48 % improvement over the initial CCTO/MPU composite. Meanwhile, the dielectric loss remained low at 0.050, with only a marginal increase of 2.04 %. Additionally, the breakdown strength of the composite films was notably boosted to 19.15 kV/mm, demonstrating a 15.3 % enhancement. These findings highlight the substantial improvement in the dielectric performance of the CCTO/Ti 3 C 2 T x /MPU ternary composite films, showcasing their potential for high-performance electronic applications.

An appropriate electron transport layer (ETL) or cathode buffer layer (CBL) is critical for high-performance perovskite solar cells (PVSCs). In this work, tetrabutylammonium hydroxide (TBAOH)-functionalized Ti3C2Tx MXene (TBAOH-Ti3C2Tx) is developed to improve the photovoltaic performance of PVSCs. TBAOH-Ti3C2Tx is synthesized by HF etching and then TBAOH intercalation, and TBAOH can effectively attach to the Ti3C2Tx surface during the intercalation process. In hole transport material (HTM)-free carbon-based PVSCs with the structure of ITO/ETL/MAPbI3/carbon, the SnO2 doped by TBAOH-Ti3C2Tx (SnO2:TBAOH-Ti3C2Tx) as ETL shows decreased WF and increased conductivity and improves the growth of the perovskite film with a larger grain and significantly reduced defects, which synergistically facilitate charge transport and extraction and reduce charge recombination. The HTM-free carbon-based PVSC with SnO2:TBAOH-Ti3C2Tx ETL exhibits a significantly higher PCE of 14.93% with enhanced device stability compared to the control device with pristine SnO2 ETL (11.95%) and also outperforms most of the HTM-free carbon-based PVSCs with MAPbI3 perovskite reported so far. In traditional inverted PVSCs with the structure of ITO/PTAA/MAPbI3/PCBM/CBL/Ag, the TBAOH-Ti3C2Tx is utilized as a CBL to significantly enhance device performance with a high PCE of 21.16%, which is obviously superior than that (16.26%) of the control device without CBL. The impressive results indicate that tetrabutylammonium hydroxide-functionalized Ti3C2Tx MXene possesses great application potential in different functional layers for high-performance PVSCs.

Faradic capacitive deionization (CDI) has emerged as an ideal candidate for developing effective water purification from low-concentration desalinated water. However, long-term desalination-stability CDI still faces the challenge in unstable electrode microstructure after hundreds of ion intercalations. Herein, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA)-modified Ti 3 C 2 T x (denoted as EDTA-Ti 3 C 2 T x ) electrodes are proposed through intense chemical interactions without scarifying Ti 3 C 2 T x electronic conductivity, wherein the formed –COO-terminated bridge stabilizes Ti 3 C 2 T x interlayer spacing for strengthening long-term regeneration desalination. Simultaneously, abundant Na + adsorption sites with highly hydrophilic surface in the binder-free high-conductivity EDTA-Ti 3 C 2 T x accelerated ion electro-sorption with efficient ion permeations. Importantly, in 500 mg L −1 NaCl solutions, EDTA-Ti 3 C 2 T x //activated carbon (AC) assembled CDI device delivered an extremely stable adsorption/desorption with salt adsorption-capacity (SAC) retention of 83 % after 500 cycles and a high desalination capacity of 51.0 mg g −1 . In addition, the EDTA-Ti 3 C 2 T x presented without d -spacing changes after 100 cycle desalinations that was significantly different from structural collapse in Ti 3 C 2 T x . This study offers a new idea to overcome poor electrochemical desalination stability via organic molecules stabilized Ti 3 C 2 T x structure.

Carbon nanofibers can be widely used in the field of electromagnetic wave absorption due to corrosion resistance, low density and good chemical stability. Here, we report a strategy to achieve strong microwave absorption capability by adjusting the crystallinity of carbon nanofibers containing Al 2 O 3 and TiO 2 . TiO 2 with Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene as a precursor decreases the crystallization temperature of Al 2 O 3 from 1400 °C to 800 °C in the carbon nanofibers. The diameter distribution of carbon nanofibers is uniform, though the surface of carbon nanofibers is getting rough with Ti 3 C 2 T x content increasing. The minimum reflection loss of carbon nanofibers is -55.78 dB at a thickness of 4.32 mm; the effective absorption bandwidth reaches 5.41 GHz (12.59-18 GHz) at a thickness of 1.67 mm, almost covering the Ku band. The excellent microwave absorption performance can be attributed to the synergistic effect of the non-crystalline carbon matrix and crystalline Al 2 O 3 /TiO 2 , in which the former improves impedance matching with free space, while the latter enhances the attenuation capability to the electromagnetic wave.

Conventional polymer anion exchange membranes (AEMs) suffer from the permeability-selectivity trade-off in diffusion dialysis (DD), limiting their efficiency in critical resource recovery scenarios (e.g., acid recycling and Li + extraction). To overcome this, this study incorporated polyaniline-modified MXene (PANI-Ti 3 C 2 T X ) nanosheets as transformative fillers into quaternized polyphenylene oxide (QPPO). The resulting PANI-Ti 3 C 2 T X -QPPO membranes enable dual-function DD for H + /metal cations and Li + /Mg 2+ separation. First, the as-prepared membranes exhibited enhanced microphase separation, yielding expanded hydrophilic domains (13.95–14.8 nm vs. 12.5 nm in pristine QPPO). Moreover, the 1.0 %-PANI-Ti 3 C 2 T X -QPPO membrane (with 1.0 wt% filler loading) achieved a peak ion exchange capacity of 1.75 mmol g −1 . For H + /metal cations separation: in HCl/FeCl 2 mixture, the H + dialysis coefficient ( U H ) reached 1.39–1.50 × 10 −2 m h −1 (2.7–2.9 times higher than the commercial TWDDA3S, 0.52 × 10 −2 m h −1 ); in HCl/AlCl 3 mixture, U H reached 1.50–1.53 × 10 −2 m h −1 , combined with exceptional selectivity ( S H/Al = 1568.4–1805.8), outperforming both TWDDA3S ( U H = 0.94 × 10 −2 m h −1 , S H/Al = 1423.8) and pristine QPPO ( U H = 1.27 × 10 −2 m h −1 , S H/Al = 1117). Finally, for Li + /Mg 2+ separation, the membranes delivered enhanced Li + flux with competitive S Li/Mg (11.4–12.4) against TWDDA3S (11.4) and QPPO (11.8). This study demonstrates that PANI-Ti 3 C 2 T X and QPPO synergistically overcome the permeability-selectivity trade-off in polymer membranes.
