The physical stability, interfacial composition and protein-lipid co-oxidation of O/W emulsions stabilised by whey protein isolate under different pH conditions (3.0, 5.0, 7.0 and 9.0) with fixed storage times were assessed in the present study. The results revealed that different pH conditions had distinct effects on the physical stability of the emulsions, as verified by the droplet size, ζ-potential and interfacial composition. Acidic conditions had an unnoticeable impact on protein-lipid co-oxidation. Remarkable physical barrier-like protection of the lipid core provided by adsorbed proteins (AP) was observed in the O/W emulsions under neutral conditions. However, alkaline conditions (pH 9.0) could induce the most severe protein-lipid co-oxidation when the storage time was extended, as indicated by the highest levels of protein and lipid oxidation products (carbonyl, N′-formyl- l -kynurenine, lipid hydroperoxides, thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances and volatile lipid oxidation products), in addition to the obvious molecular changes in unadsorbed proteins (UAP) or AP. Free radicals and metal ions could more easily react with highly unfolded and negatively charged AP under strong alkaline conditions. Our findings clearly revealed that the co-oxidation phenomenon of O/W emulsion systems were closely related to the synergistic effects between the transformation of interfacial composition and aggregation of oil droplets that occurred under different pH conditions.

Although numerous propolis flavonoids (EEP) formulations have been developed as dietary supplements for assisting blood glucose regulation, their bioavailability and bioactivity are limited due to the lower solubilities in aqueous media. To address this challenge, a novel O/W submicron emulsion was constructed to efficiently deliver propolis flavonoids and improve the absorption efficiency. Results showed that this delivery vehicle exerted inspiring features of nano-scaled droplet size , narrow particle distribution and higher cargo loading efficiency. Compared to conventional preparations, EEP submicron emulsion exhibited excellent stability against dilution with different pH buffers and maintained physicochemical characteristics within six months. Most importantly, EEP submicron emulsion could be efficiently absorbed through gastrointestinal (GI) tract via multiple-uptake routes and dramatically enhanced the bioavailability of propolis flavonoids. In conclusion, O/W submicron emulsion is a promising carrier for improving the in vivo utilization efficiency of water-insoluble flavonoids in functional foods.

Photocatalytic nitrate (NO 3 - ) reduction is considered a promising green and non-polluting technology to solve the nitrate pollution of groundwater and surface water. Herein, a novel Br-substituted Bi 2 WO 6−x ultrathin nanosheets were prepared by a simple hydrothermal method in a strong acid environment containing sixteen alkyl three methyl bromide (CTAB). The catalytic system solves the problems of low carrier separation efficiency, poor performance under alkaline conditions, and a hard-to-activate N = O bond, achieving efficient NO 3 - removal under alkaline conditions along with high N 2 selectivity . It was confirmed that Br-substituted Bi 2 WO 6−x produced the [W (VI) O 6−x ] units with a strong electron-withdrawing property by changing the polarity of the O-W-O bond. As a result, the effective space charge separation caused by the change of the W valence state and the spontaneous fracture behavior of the N = O bond improved the carriers utilization efficiency and distinctly reduced the reaction energy consumption, synergistically achieving excellent performance.

Despite the potential benefits of using cellulose ethers and their combination with other polysaccharides and proteins in the creation of reduced-fat water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions, research in this specific area is currently limited. Further studies are needed to explore the optimal combinations and concentrations of these materials to achieve emulsions with desired texture and higher rheological properties. To address this research gap, seven W/O emulsions with a 40 wt% water phase at pH 3.5 are prepared. The water phase consisted of 2 wt% methylcellulose (MC) or hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) combined with 10 wt% whey protein isolate (WPI) and/or kappa-carrageenan (kC). The oil phase, comprising 60 wt%, contained 8 wt% polyglycerol polyricinoleate (PGPR) in soybean oil . The emulsions were initially prepared at room temperature and subsequently subjected to a heating process at an elevated temperature of 90 °C for a duration of 30 min. Following this heating step, the emulsions were then cooled back to room temperature. This sequential temperature treatment was employed with the intention of inducing aggregation and gelation within the emulsions. The temperature oscillation measurements (G* versus temperature) provide further evidence for the role of covalent and noncovalent bonding in the rheology and gelation of WPI-based emulsions. The viscosity and moduli of unheated and heated emulsions containing combinations of HPMC were found to be higher compared to those containing MC combinations. This behavior can be attributed to the stronger intermolecular interaction between HPMC, WPI, and/or kC, as well as their attachment with PGPR. These interactions lead to the formation of a more viscous and firmer W–O interface in emulsions.

Heteroatom co-doping has been considered as an effective strategy to simultaneously overcome intrinsic shortcomings of g-C 3 N 4 to achieve enhanced photocatalytic properties, in which the involved dopants could play its role in altering electronic structure, optical absorption and charge separation of the catalyst. Herein, W/O co-doped hollow g-C 3 N 4 tubular structures are successfully obtained for the first time via a one-step thermal decomposition. By W/O co-doping, architecture of g-C 3 N 4 is able to be modulated with enhanced optical absorption towards visible region. In addition, narrowed band gap and restrained charge recombination are conducive for the excitation of electron-hole pairs and transportation. Photocatalytic water splitting tests indicate that the co-doped hollow tubular g-C 3 N 4 structures enable superior activity for generating hydrogen up to 403.57 μmol g −1 h −1 driven by visible light, nearly 2.5 times as high as that of pristine g-C 3 N 4 . This work presents a rational strategy to design co-doped g-C 3 N 4 as an efficient visible-light-driven photocatalyst .

Currently, Mn 4+ -activated red-emitting materials are the research hotspot due to their promising application in phosphor-converted white light-emitting diodes (w-LEDs). Here, a typical cation substitution strategy is reported to optimize Mn 4+ -doped germinate phosphor for improving luminescence performances. The effect of cation substitution for Ge 4+ ions by Ti 4+ , Sn 4+ , and Si 4+ ions on lattice structure, photoluminescence properties, and thermal stability of the as-prepared Mn 4+ -doped germinates is systematically investigated. A significant improvement of emission intensity with Ti 4+ doping should benefit from the resonance emission enhancement effect. Some lattice distortion defects contribute to the thermal stability enhancement, which plays a role in driving the excited phonon traps to compensate the energy loss of nonradiative transition. Surprisingly, abnormal variation in intensity of anti-Stokes and Stokes emission peaks with changing temperature is first observed, revealing a potential application in thermometry. The electroluminescence performances of as-fabricated w-LED devices using Mg 14 Ge 5 Ti 0.5 O 24 :Mn 4+ red phosphor are evaluated, which possess higher color rendering index ( R a = 87.3) and luminous efficiency (109.42 lm W −1 ) as well as lower color correlated temperature (3566 K) than those using Cs 2 GeF 6 :Mn 4+ and CaAlSiN 3 :Eu 2+ red phosphors. The results reflect the superiority of the studied phosphor in w-LEDs and optical thermometry areas.

Developing a novel non-rare-earth activated oxide red phosphor with admirable luminescent performance and low cost is still of great interest in the field of energy-saving warm white light-emitting diodes (w-LEDs) illumination. Here, Li 3 Mg 2 SbO 6 :Mn 4+ (LMSO:Mn 4+ ) red-emitting phosphor has been successfully prepared with cheap raw materials via a traditional solid-state method. Crystal structure, morphology, composition as well as optical properties are studied in detail. The prepared LMSO:Mn 4+ phosphor exhibits a broad and deep red emission band in the range of 600–750 nm with the maximum centered at 666 nm, which is ascribed to the Mn 4+ : 2 E g → 4 A 2g transition in [SbO 6 ] octahedral environment. Moreover, the nephelauxetic effect of Mn 4+ in the LMSO matrix is evaluated by investigating the crystal field strength (Dq) and Racah parameters (B and C). Importantly, LMSO:0.01Mn 4+ phosphor demonstrates good thermal stability and high quantum efficiency. By embedding LMSO:Mn 4+ and Y 3 Al 5 O 12 :Ce 3+ phosphors with various ratios in the TeO 2 -based glass host, a series of phosphors-in-glass(PiG) composites are achieved and demonstrate to remain the original optical properties of phosphors. Remarkably, by coupling PiG color converters with a blue LED chip, high-power w-LEDs devices with tunable optoelectronic parameters are constructed, with the correlated color temperature evolving from cool white (6783 K) to warm one (4014 K) and the color rendering index increasing from 72.2 to 88.7.

In this paper, BiOBr@H 3 PW 12 O 40 @BiOI heterostructure with honeycomb-like morphology is successfully constructed for the first time by a simple one-step solvothermal strategy. The introduction of H 3 PW 12 O 40 effectively improves the specific surface area and photon trapping ability of BiOBr@BiOI heterostructure. More importantly, the W 5d electron orbital of H 3 PW 12 O 40 , as an electron bridge, effectively improves the transmission efficiency of photogenerated electrons in the BiOBr@BiOI heterostructure, thus making the BiOBr@H 3 PW 12 O 40 @BiOI heterostructure show excellent performance in the photocatalytic oxidation or reduction reaction. Based on the macro-thermodynamic model proposed in our previous work and the active species capture experiments, the photocatalytic oxidation or reduction mechanism by using as-prepared BiOBr@H 3 PW 12 O 40 @BiOI heterostructure is discussed in detail.

Cleavage of C-C bonds is crucial for hydrogen production via aqueous phase reforming of biomass-derived oxygenates. In this study, the hydrogen production performance and C-C bond cleavage capacity of Ni-W/AC catalysts with varying W/Ni ratios are evaluated using ethylene glycol as a model compound. A series of APR experiments conducted suggests that Ni-0.2W/AC catalyst exhibits the highest C1/C2+ratio of 15.87 and achieves a hydrogen yield of 47.76%. The enhanced Ni-W bimetallic interactions, which significantly improve the efficiency of C-C bond cleavage and increase catalyst activity by promoting active site dispersion, are confirmed by detailed characterization techniques. Further analysis of product distribution provides insights into the reaction pathways of ethylene glycol and the reaction mechanism for ethanol during aqueous phase reforming. All the results indicate that this catalytic reforming method effectively facilitates C-C bond cleavage and hydrogen production, contributing to a better understanding of APR mechanisms for biomass-derived oxygenates.

Nitrogen fixation reaction via photocatalysis offers a green and promising strategy for renewable NH3 synthesis, and catalysts with high-efficiency photocatalytic properties are essential to the process. Herein, we demonstrate a W-doped Sb2OS2 bimetal oxysulfide catalyst (labeled as SbWOS) with abundant oxygen vacancies, heterovalent metal states, and hydrophilic surfaces for nitrogen photoreduction to ammonia. The SbWOS-3 with suitable W-doping exhibited excellent nitrogen fixation activity of 408.08 μmol·g–1·h–1 and an apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 1.88% at 420 nm and a solar-to-ammonia (STA) conversion efficiency of 0.082% in pure water under AM1.5G light irradiation. The W-doping not only transforms hydrophobic Sb2OS2 into a hydrophilic catalyst, making it easier for H2O molecules adsorbed on the SbWOS surface and catalyzed into protons, but also endows the SbWOS catalyst with rich oxygen vacancies, acting as the active sites for trapping and activating the N2 molecule, and for trapping and activating H2O to produce the protons for the N2 photocatalytic reduction reaction. The hydrazine drives the SbWOS catalyst with the heterovalent metal states, which acts as the photogenerate electrons quickly hopping between W5+ and W6+ to transfer for the N2 reduction reaction. This study provides a feasible scheme for applying oxygen vacancy defects, heterovalent metal states, and surface hydrophobic-to-hydrophilic wetting engineering in bimetal oxysulfide for N2 photoreduction to ammonia.

To reveal the role of bi-vacancy defects and heterovalent states in oxysulfide catalysts for enhancing the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (PHER), we demonstrate a Br/W co-doped Zn(O,S) catalyst (labeled as Br/W-ZnOS) featuring abundant anionic oxygen vacancies (V O )/cationic zinc vacancies (V Zn ) bi-defects and heterovalent W 5+ /W 6+ states via a facile hydrolysis method. The co-doping of Br and W induces lattice distortions that enable neighboring atoms to leave the lattice, creating surfaces enriched with anionic V O and cationic V Zn defects. The synergistic effect between dual defects forms an efficient electron-hole separation system, enhancing the efficiency of electron-hole pair separation. Density functional theory calculation (DFT) demonstrates that the combination of Br/W co-doping and vacancies significantly reduces the water dissociation barrier and optimizes the surface ∗H generation rate of the photocatalyst. Thus, Br/W-ZnOS exhibits a PHER rate of 3415.7 μmol h −1 , which is 12.5 times higher than the undoped Zn(O,S) catalyst, and achieves an apparent quantum yield (AQY) of 15.41 % at 365 nm, while maintaining good stability with a PHER activity of 3288.1 μmol h −1 after five repeated cycles. This research provides a promising strategy for designing oxysulfide catalysts with synergistically engineered defects for efficient PHER.

This study examined the catalytic pyrolysis of melon seed shell (MSS) using vanadium tungsten modified ZSM-5 (V/W-ZSM-5) through combined experimental and theoretical methods. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) with model-free kinetics revealed that the catalyst lowered the activation energy by about 10 % (184–194 kJ mol⁻¹) compared with non-catalytic pyrolysis. Thermodynamic assessment showed reduced entropy (ΔS) values for conversion fractions below 0.7, indicating a more ordered and energy-efficient pathway. Product distribution from Py-GC/MS confirmed enhanced selectivity, with levoglucosan and furfural yields increasing nearly 5-folds and 3-folds, respectively. Density functional theory (DFT) clarified the mechanistic pathways: levoglucosan formed primarily via glucose dehydration, while furfural production followed xylose ring-opening and nucleophilic conversion. Collectively, these findings demonstrate that V/W-ZSM-5 not only improves selectivity toward high-value products but also reduces both kinetic and thermodynamic barriers, highlighting its potential for sustainable biomass valorization.
