WO 3 -TiO 2 heterostructural nanofibers (HNFs) were prepared by a simple two-step process. The structures, chemical constitutions and morphologies of the samples were characterized by various kinds of techniques, including XRD, XPS, EDX, SEM and TEM. The results suggested that WO 3 nanocubes with a size range of 80–120 nm were decorated uniformly on the surface of TiO 2 nanofibers in the WO 3 -TiO 2 samples. XPS results confirmed the existence of W 5+ and the increased amount of both chemisorbed oxygen species and oxygen vacancies after the WO 3 nanocubes were decorated on the surface of TiO 2 nanofibers. Compared with the pure materials, the WO 3 -TiO 2 HNFs exhibited higher response, better selectivity and lower limit detection to xylene. The improvement of the performance can be attributed to the formation of heterojunction between TiO 2 and WO 3 and the conversion between W 6+ and W 5+ . The sensing mechanism of the enhanced gas sensing properties was also discussed.

The construction of surface defects on semiconductor oxide photoanodes has been identified as a promising route for attaining improved photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance. Here, Ar plasma treatment has been used to etch the surface of hydrothermally synthesized WO 3 nanoplate array films, which generated surface oxygen vacancies (O v s) with the concomitant reduction of surface W 6+ to W 5+ /W 4+ . As a result, the visible-light absorption and photogenerated charge separation of WO 3 was enhanced, as evidenced by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV/Vis diffuse-reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. A WO 3 photoanode subjected to Ar plasma treatment for 120 s exhibited a photocurrent density of 1.32 mA cm −2 and an O 2 evolution rate of 1.0 μmol cm −2 ·min −1 under simulated solar light irradiation at a bias potential of 1.23 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode, approximately 1.7- and 5-times higher, respectively, than those of a pristine sample. This improvement is mainly attributed to the facilitative effect of surface oxygen vacancy defects, which promote electron–hole generation and separation rates and decrease the interfacial charge-transfer resistance between the WO 3 photoanode and electrolyte. Our Ar plasma surface modification also has potential for developing other photoanodes for efficient PEC performance.

A highly solar active nanocomposite with sheet-like WO 3 skeleton and evenly loaded TiO 2 and carbon quantum dots (CQDs) was synthesized by facile hydrothermal-calcining process, which showed 3.1- and 46.6- times activity on antibiotic (cephalexin) degradation than TiO 2 and WO 3 , respectively. The construction of TiO 2 /WO 3 heterojunction narrowed the band gap and facilitated the electrons-holes separation. The π conjugated CQDs was found to further improve the charge separation and extend the visible light response by photosensitization. However, the promoted charge separation predominantly contributed to the improved photocatalytic activity. The contributions of detected reactive species follows the order of: O 2 – > 1 O 2 > OH> h + . The cephalexin degradation mechanism and pathway were proposed based on DFT (density functional theory) calculation and experimental analysis. The photocatalytic mineralization efficiency can reach 92.4% in 4 h, indicating the efficient reduction of ecotoxicity of cephalexin and its intermediates. This new composite proved to have great potentials for emerging contaminants degradation in water.

Practical significance in terms of the long-term effective application of photocatalytic coatings is greatly challenged by its easy pollution and poor self-cleaning performance. In this paper, a self-cleaning photocatalytic WO 3 -TiO 2 nanorod (MWT) /PDMS building coating (MWT coating) was prepared by spraying methods. The surface hierarchical structure fabricated by MWT and PDMS was a crux to construct a superhydrophobic surface, which endowed MWT coating with self-cleaning performance. Besides, the MWT coating exhibited prominent durability and antifouling property after 450 d practical application of the external wall. The excellent self-cleaning property of the coating was confirmed by the removal and resistance to the adhesion of powder particles. Meanwhile, the photocatalytic properties of MWT endowed MWT coating with the ability to degrade organic pollutants on the surface. The color difference of the coating polluted by methyl red was only 1.18 and 4.77 after 24 h UV and visible irradiation, respectively. This mutual benefit effect of self-cleaning and photocatalysis was also reflected in the degradation of NO. In the first five cycles, the degradation efficiency of NO decreased by 4.74% gradually under visible light due to the adhesion of oxidation products, and most of the MWT on the coating surface was regenerated after flushing, the PCD efficiency increased by 3.71%. Furthermore, after 30 days of outdoor weathering test, the PCD efficiency of MWT coating decreased by 11.74% and 12.05% under UV and visible light, respectively, which lays a foundation for the long-term effectiveness of the MWT coating in the process of use.

The rational fabrication of direct Z-scheme heterostructures photocatalysts is a pivotal strategy to boost the interfacial charge migration and separation. Herein, direct Z-scheme Bi2WO6/WO3composites were rationally fabricated for the degradation of bisphenol A combined with the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The tight interface contact between Bi2WO6and WO3was successfully formed by the in situ epitaxial growth of ultrathin Bi2WO6nanosheets at the surface of WO3nanorods. The Bi2WO6/WO3composite presented highly efficient catalytic performance toward degradation of BPA with PMS activation as compared to the WO3and Bi2WO6. PMS can dramatically boost the photocatalytic activity of the composites. Moreover, the results of active radical scavenging experiments revealed thath+, •O2−, and •SO4−are critical active species in the photodegradation reaction. Finally, the photocatalytic mechanism for the degradation of BPA is also discussed in detail. The great improvement of photocatalytic performance should be ascribed to the effective formation of the direct Z-scheme heterojunctions between Bi2WO6and WO3, resulting in improved light absorption, an efficient transfer and separation of photoinduced charge carriers, and a considerable amount of the electrons and holes with strong reduction and oxidation abilities. The study might provide new inspirations to design and construct heterostructured nanomaterials with outstanding photoactivity for environmental remediation. Keywords:bisphenol A;peroxymonosulfate;photocatalysis;composites;Z-scheme

In this work, Bi spheres were deposited on bulk WO 3 ·0.33H 2 O and TiO 2 (P25) nanoparticles to form Z-scheme Bi/TiO 2 /WO 3 ·0.33H 2 O heterojunction material for the first time by a simple hydrothermal method. The as-prepared materials were comprehensively characterized by XRD, XPS, SEM, TEM, UV–Vis DRS, BET surface area, EIS, and Mott-Schottky analysis. The ternary Bi/TiO 2 /WO 3 ·0.33H 2 O composites exhibited superior degradation efficiency for RhB than pure WO 3 ·0.33H 2 O, TiO 2 (P25), and their binary composites. The degradation rate reached 99.84% after 30 min under simulated sunlight. The enhancement of photocatalytic activity could be attributed to the Z-scheme heterojunction system with metal Bi as an electronic medium, which greatly enhanced the efficiency of charge separation. This report demonstrated that Z-scheme Bi/TiO 2 /WO 3 ·0.33H 2 O heterojunction photocatalytic material has potential application value in dye wastewater treatment.

Commercial V 2 O 5 -WO 3 /TiO 2 (VWTi) catalysts used in NH 3 -SCR reaction with varied Zn loading were prepared and then effect of SO 2 on Zn-poisoned VWTi catalysts was investigated. Zn could cause the deactivation of VWTi catalysts. Nevertheless, the effect of SO 2 on Zn-poisoned VWTi catalysts varied with Zn loading. For Zn-poisoned catalyst with low content of Zn (1.0 wt.%, ZnL), SO 2 would promote the activity recovery of the catalyst. However, SO 2 had no influence on the Zn-poisoned catalyst with high Zn content (4.0 wt.%, ZnH). The catalyst was characterized by N 2 adsorption-desorption, XRD, XPS, SO 2 -TPD, NH 3 -TPD, H 2 -TPR and in situ DRIFTS. Tri-coordinated sulfate species were formed on ZnL sample in the presence of SO 2 , and the sulfate species could form new Brønsted acid sites, causing the recovery of activity. But ZnSO 4 was appeared and no Brønsted acid sites formed on ZnH sample under SO 2 , thus the activity of ZnH sample changed little.

Tungsten oxide is a promising electrocatalyst for water splitting reactions, due to its flexible chemical state, strong structural malleability and good corrosion resistance. Herein, the surface engineering on WO 3 was conducted by a controllable N 2 plasma for enhancing the performance of water splitting reactions. Under the specific N 2 plasma treatment, the surface crystalline phase and the surface morphology of the tungsten oxide can be changed, as well as the creation of oxygen vacancies. These changes lead to a greatly increased electrochemical surface area, a narrowed bandgap, and a distorted crystal lattice. For oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in 1.0 M KOH, the activity of the modified tungsten oxide electrodes presents a positive correlation with the input plasma, and an optimal overpotential of 269 mV @ 10 mA cm −2 is achieved with a Tafel slope of 122 mV dec -1 . With a high N 2 plasma flux, the W-N bond can be formed on the tungsten oxide surface, which contributes to the promotion of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity, and an overpotential of 93 mV @ 10 mA cm −2 in 1.0 M KOH is exhibited, and the Tafel slope largely reduced to 76 mV dec -1 . Such a facile strategy provides an engineering route of preparing efficient electrodes for water splitting reactions.

Besides catalyzing NOx reduction, the V 2 O 5 -WO 3 /TiO 2 catalyst can effectively suppress the formation of urea (CH 4 N 2 O) decomposition by-products in selective catalytic reduction (SCR). However, current research lacks a clear understanding of the impact of urea and its by-products on the catalyst' performance. Additionally, there is no available kinetic model to describe the decomposition process of urea and its by-products on the V 2 O 5 -WO 3 /TiO 2 catalyst. In this paper, the decomposition process of urea and its by-products on the catalyst was firstly investigated via thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). It was found that increasing the catalyst dosage can accelerate urea decomposition and block the transformation pathways from urea and biuret (C 2 H 5 N 3 O 2 ) to cyanuric acid (cya, C 3 H 3 N 3 O 3 ). However, as the decomposition temperature of the by-products increased, a larger amount of catalyst was also required. Secondly, the impact of urea and its by-products on the NOx reduction performance was investigated via the SCR test bench. The results showed that, at 200 ℃, the addition of 20 % urea, biuret, or cya decreased the NOx reduction rate by 7.2 %, 9.8 %, and 11.0 % respectively. Furthermore, the catalyst's performance was significantly improved at 400 ℃ dues to the decomposition of urea and its by-products. Then, various characterization techniques were used to analyze the morphology and chemical composition of the urea decomposition products on the catalyst at different temperatures. On this basis, a simplified urea non-catalytic and catalytic coupling mechanism model was developed, which included 7 species and 16 reactions. Finally, the kinetic parameters of the proposed urea catalytic decomposition model were optimized utilizing TGA test data, density functional theory (DFT), and genetic algorithms (GA). This study can provide guidance for the elimination of SCR urea deposits in engineering applications.

Photocatalytic oxalic acid (OA) activation for pharmaceutical wastewater degradation based on Fe-based catalysts are usually limited by the cycle of Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ and low conversion efficiency of OA. Herein, an effective OA activator, FeOOH loaded FeWO 4 /WO 3 (FFW) heterojunction photocatalyst, were fabricated by electrostatic self-assembly for tetracycline (TC) degradation. Experimental results revealed that the introduction of FeOOH can greatly enhance the optical absorption and separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers of the FeWO 4 /WO 3 (FW) composite. Moreover, optimized FFW heterojunction exhibited the excellent photocatalytic OA activation activity and the highest OA conversion rate for TC degradation, which exhibited 97.3% photocatalytic performance for TC within 30 min under 420 nm light irradiation. The FFW heterojunction still revealed high photocatalytic OA activation activity for TC degradation even after six cycles. The possible degradation pathway of TC and photocatalytic OA activation mechanism of FFW heterojunction were also presented by ESR spectroscopy results, quenching tests, and LC-MS analysis. This work not only provides a fresh perspective on the surface photo-Fenton chemistry of catalytic redox processes, but also presents a valid reference for designing highly efficient photocatalytic OA-activation systems for pharmaceutical wastewater treatment .

Photocatalytic hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production from water and O2 has received considerable attention. However, most of the photocatalysts reported often require the addition of sacrificial agents to quench h+, which greatly restricts their practical application and increases the cost. In this study, we proposed a Z-scheme heterojunction WO3/covalent organic framework (Tp–TAPB) that can accelerate the separation and charge transfer at the interface and retain the strong oxidative and reductive ability of WO3 and Tp–TAPB. The photocatalytic activity for H2O2 production of WO3/Tp–TAPB reached 1488.4 μmol g−1 h−1 in a pure water system without any sacrificial agents, which is 72.3 times and 2.8 times higher than that of WO3 and Tp–TAPB, respectively. In addition, WO3/Tp–TAPB was used for photocatalytic H2O2 production in lake water and tap water, and a high photocatalytic H2O2 production rate was still maintained. The in situ photocatalytically synthesized H2O2 was used in the real coking wastewater to remove chemical oxygen demand (COD) under UV light radiation. The removal of COD was over 37% with UV/H2O2. To the best of our knowledge, there is no other study on the degradation of organic pollutants in real water by using photocatalytically synthesized H2O2in situ. This study provides a new idea and approach for photocatalytic H2O2 production without using a sacrificial agent.

Tungsten trioxide (WO 3 ) loaded on activated charcoal powder (ACP) was sprayed onto ITO conductive glass for using in dye-sensitized solar cells(DSSC). The results showed that the composite electrode of WO 3 @ACP had apparently catalytic activity as a counter electrode for the regeneration of the traditional iodide / triiodide (I - /I 3- ) redox pair. In the dye-sensitized solar cell, the power conversion efficiency on WO 3 @ACP was 5.04%, which was 3.15 times higher than 1.61% on the WO 3 . The followed were the electrical properties test of cyclic voltammetry(CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS) and Tafel polarization curve. It was further explained that the catalytic activity of WO 3 @ ACP was obviously affected by the dispersion of WO 3 particles on activated carbon powder.
