Magnesium alloys are promising for biodegradable medical devices due to their low density, high specific strength, and excellent biocompatibility. However, their rapid corrosion, protein fouling, and bacterial adhesion severely limit clinical applications. Here, a stratified-rock-inspired micro/nano-structured ZnS/Zn-MOFs coating was fabricated on AZ31B via a one-step hydrothermal route and post-functionalized with stearic acid (SA) and chloramphenicol (CAP) to afford a superhydrophobic ZnS/Zn-MOFs@SC surface (water contact angle ≈ 164°). The coating retained its superhydrophobicity after ultrasonication, adhesive-tape peeling, and sandpaper abrasion. Electrochemical measurements revealed that the corrosion current density (I corr ) decreased from ∼10 -3 A cm −2 (bare alloy) to 7.66 × 10 -7 A cm −2 , corresponding to a four-order-of-magnitude improvement, while the diameter of the capacitive loop in the Nyquist plot increased by five orders of magnitude. In vitro bacterial tests show the coating fully prevents bacterial adhesion. The inhibition zones for E. coli and S. epidermidis reach 3.1 cm and 4.4 cm. And it has been established that bacterial growth levels below the detection limit (10 5 CFU cm −2 ) cannot effectively evaluate its antimicrobial efficacy. These results demonstrate that the ZnS/Zn-MOFs@SC coating simultaneously provides robust corrosion protection, anti-fouling, and antibacterial activities, offering great potential for next-generation biodegradable implants.

It is promising to develop next-generation indoor and outdoor flexible electroluminescent light sources, as thin as wallpaper, by converting electric energy into light directly based on semiconductor quantum dots (QDs). This work reports a sunlike full-spectrum electroluminescent white light-emitting diode (WLED) fabricated by spin-coating the mixture of yellow-green, red, and blue QDs at once, adopting the device structure of ITO/PEDOT:PSS/PVK(PTAA)/Mixed QDs/ZnO:Mg (AP-ZnO)/Al(Ag). The yellow-green and red QDs are prepared by coating three-layer ZnS shells on the CuInS2 cores, which are synthesized using sulfur powder and dodecanethiol (DDT) as sulfur source, respectively. The blue QDs are prepared by coating three-layer ZnS shells on ZnCuGaS2 cores. The photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of the yellow-green, red, and blue QDs is 82%, 89%, and 83%, respectively. The WLED emits warm white light with a color temperature of 3000 K, chromaticity CIE (0.4228, 0.4287), and color rendering index (CRI) Ra 92.4. The electroluminescence spectrum of the device, whose similarity to the solar spectrum reaches 91.7% in the wavelength region of 450–700 nm, is rich in the red component and poor in the blue component, showing great potential for future healthy lighting applications.

Despite their eco-friendly profile, the luminescence efficiency of I–III–VI group quantum dots (QDs) for near-infrared (NIR) applications is fundamentally limited by defects and strong electron-phonon coupling (EPC). Here, we report a solvent engineering strategy that simultaneously regulates the composition and defect states in CuInSSe QDs by tuning the DDT/ODE ratio. This approach effectively mitigates EPC, reducing the Huang–Rhys factor from 6.2 to 1.2 and boosting the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) to 56.4%. Subsequent ZnS shell coating further elevates the PLQY to 93.9%. Temperature-dependent spectroscopy and theoretical calculations suggest that defect suppression plays a significant role in weakening EPC. Based on these QDs, we fabricated near-infrared quantum dot light-emitting diodes (NIR-QLEDs) exhibiting an average external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 15.8±1.3% (20 devices) and a maximum EQE of 18.5% at 910 nm, which is one of the highest values reported for CuInSSe-based NIR-QLEDs to date, along with a peak radiance of 7.8 W sr −1 m −2 . We further demonstrate their potential in non-invasive bio-imaging. This work provides a viable path to high-performance eco-friendly optoelectronics by manipulating fundamental electron-phonon interactions.

Bandgap-tunable alloyed CdS0.12Se0.88 quantum dot (QD) sensitizers on a TiO2 photoanode with a ZnSe/ZnS passivation layer (denoted as CSS(ZSS)) were successfully synthesized for the first time by a facile one-pot successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) process from a cationic solution containing Zn2+ and Cd2+, and an anionic solution containing Se2− and S2−. A high power conversion efficiency (PCE) up to 6.14% (Jsc = 20.4 mA cm−2, Voc = 578 mV, FF = 0.52) was achieved, which is almost double the efficiency of 3.40% for the quantum dot sensitized solar cells (QDSCs) without Zn2+ feeding in the cationic solution. The results indicated that the light absorbance enhancement as well as the optical bandgap variation (from 2.13 eV to 1.89 eV) effectively promoted the light harvesting, leading to an increased photocurrent density. A careful control of the molar ratio of Zn/Cd by the SILAR cycles played a vital role in determining Jsc and Voc, and the possible explanation and mechanisms are discussed. The charge recombination at the interface between the QDs and electrolyte was also elaborated.

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is a toxic metabolite produced by fungi with substantial environmental and health concerns. Thus, the detection of AFB1 has attracted increasing attention. In this study, a fluorometric sandwich biosensor was developed for the detection of AFB1, which was prepared by combining molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) with an aptamer. Porous carbon (PC) generated by the carbonization of ZIF-8 provided abundant sites for the MIP layer to achieve high-performance recognition of AFB1. The aptamer-modified CdTe/ZnS achieved efficient sandwich analysis of AFB1 as a signal probe. The sandwich biosensor exhibited excellent selectivity and high sensitivity with a dynamic linear range of 0.01–20 ng/mL and good reliability in spiked edible oil samples as low as 4.0 pg/mL. In sum, the developed sandwich biosensor is promising for the detection of AFB1 in food and the environment, with great potential in the control of other challenging food hazards .

Environmentally friendly zinc selenide (ZnSe) based core/shell quantum dots (QDs) are promising emitting materials for special light sources and displays. However, ZnSe-based core/shell QDs with violet-blue emission that simultaneously possess thick shells and narrow emission linewidths are still challenging thus far. We herein use a gradient ZnSe x S 1-x /ZnS shell strategy to target this goal. The ZnSe x S 1-x mid shell helps the lattice strain relaxation during the growth, whereas the wide bandgap ZnS outer shell benefits the optical properties by passivating the emitting cores and improving the quantum confinement effect. These ZnSe core QDs show a unity zinc blende structure and high crystallinity . The optimized ZnSe/ZnSe x S 1-x /ZnS QDs exhibit tunable emission wavelengths (415–445 nm), narrow photoluminescence linewidths (10.2–14.2 nm), thick shells (>3.9 nm), and high photoluminescence quantum yields (>50%). We postulate that these excellent features are due to the use of alloyed ZnSe x S 1-x layer at the core/shell interfaces. This study provides a feasible idea for the development of blue ZnSe-based QDs with perfect emitting properties.

Ag 2 S-ZnS (AZ) heterostructures with tunable aspect ratio (AR) and band structure were successfully synthesized by site-selective doping of metal ions. TEM and XPS results showed that by doping Cu, Mn and Cd ions in AZ heterostructures (Cu: AZ, Mn: AZ and Cd: AZ), respectively, the morphology of AZ heterostructures changed from tadpole-shape (Cu: AZ with AR of 1.2) to matchstick-shape (Cd: AZ with AR of 3.9) due to the selective doping of Cu ions in Ag 2 S head and Cd ions in ZnS tail as well as the doping of Mn ions both in Ag 2 S head and ZnS tail (Mn: AZ with AR of 2.7). All the UV-Vis spectra of doped AZ showed Urbach tail absorption, suggesting the existence of midgap-states created by metal ion dopants , which was confirmed by PL results. Cd: AZ with the largest AR values and Cd-doping induced midgap states showed the highest photocatalytic H 2 -production rate of 1443.55 μmol h −1 g −1 . The catalytic activity of the Cd: AZ can be ascribed to the synergistic effect of midgap states and aspect ratio-dependent charge transfer, which all originate from the site-selective doping of metal ions. This investigation demonstrates a facile way to manipulate the charge carrier dynamics of semiconductor heterostructures by synergistic effects through simultaneously tuning and optimizing the electronic and morphological structures.

Removal of aluminum ion from rare earth ions solution by selective adsorption was one of the promising methods for green enrichment of the acidic rare earth solution containing aluminum ions. Herein, a series of ZnS polymorphs/halloysite composites and Wurtzite/Halloysite (WZ@Hal) with different wurtzite content were prepared by facile one-step hydrothermal method using halloysite as the substance. The phase composition, microstructure and specific surface area of the WZ@Hal composite were characterized and the selective adsorption behavior of the WZ@Hal composite for aluminum and rare earth ions under different conditions was studied. The results showed that WZ@Hal composite loaded with hexagonal wurtzite showed good adsorption selectivity for Al(III) with a spontaneous exothermic process, while SP@Hal composite loaded with cubic sphalerite displayed no obvious adsorption capacity for both Al(III) and Er(III) with an endothermic process. The WZ@Hal composite was synthesized through strong electron interaction between sulfur atoms of wurtzite with oxygen atoms on the surface of halloysite. The WZ@Hal exhibited a fast adsorption rate a fast adsorption rate (k 2 was 0.0713 g⋅mg −1 ⋅min −1 ) and an excellent selectivity coefficient (K s was 237). The adsorption process of WZ@Hal for Al(III) in mixed solution was described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and controlled by the chemisorption. WZ@Hal showed excellent regeneration and maintained high selective adsorption performance in adsorption–desorption process. The adsorption mechanism was that aluminum ions were adsorbed by electron interaction with sulfur atoms of wurtzite and oxygen atoms of halloysite at the interface of the wurtzite and halloysite. WZ@Hal composite showed excellent selective adsorption performance in the adsorption and separation process of acidic mixed solution of aluminum ion and rare earth ions.

Uranium is one of the most hazardous elements due to its long half-life and chemical toxicity to living organisms that occurs in surface, subsurface water, and radioactive wastewater normally in the soluble UO 2 2+ form. However, it is a challenge to rapidly and highly selectively separate UO 2 2+ from complex aqueous environments. Here, we innovatively propose a secure, environmental, and sustainable approach to proficiently capture UO 2 2+ . A nano-ZnS/alkali-activated collagen fiber composite ( ZnS-AACF ) was successfully fabricated via the facile in-situ growth method, in which collagen fibers derived from leather waste act as the substrate. Notably, the composite ZnS-AACF presents good radiation resistance and wide pH durability (pH = 2–11). Moreover, ZnS-AACF has the high maximum adsorption capacity ( q m U = 359.72 mg/g), fast kinetics, and excellent selectivity for UO 2 2+ . ZnS-AACF can selectively capture UO 2 2+ in the presence of a variety of excess competitive ions such as Fe 3+ , Ni 2+ , Cu 2+ , VO 3 - , and UO 2 2+ . Even in highly saline environments with ultra-high concentrations of K + , Ca 2+ , Na + , Mg 2+ , Cl - , HCO 3 – , SO 4 2- , and Br - ions, ZnS-AACF can still achieve the selective removal for UO 2 2+ . Furthermore, ZnS-AACF can serve as a stationary phase in columns facilitating the dynamic and efficient separation of UO 2 2+ with q m U up to 243.69 mg/g. The adsorption mechanism of ZnS-AACF for UO 2 2+ is revealed to be the synergistic action between functional groups on the collagen fibers and nano-ZnS.

Photocatalytic hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) production and its application in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are regarded as low-cost and environmentally friendly wastewater treatment processes. Herein, by modifying a small amount of sulphide on the zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), a ZnS@ZIF-8 composite and used for photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production to degrade chlorinated organic pollutants under simulated sunlight (SSL). ZnS@ZIF-8 composite could enhance the separation of photo-induced charge carriers, promote electron transfer from zinc sulphide (ZnS) to ZIF-8, which exhibited good selectivity for the two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e - -ORR) and two-electron water oxidation (2e - -WOR) pathways. Based on oxygen (O 2 ) activation, the developed ZnS@ZIF-8/O 2 /SSL system could achieve 6.43 mmol/L H 2 O 2 production within 150 min, which was approximately 8.66 and 10.36 times higher than that of the ZnS/O 2 /SSL and ZIF-8/O 2 /SSL systems, respectively. In the ZnS@ZIF-8/O 2 /SSL system, the ORR, WOR and H 2 O 2 photolysis led to the generation of hydroxyl radical (•OH), while the photochemical behavior of ZnS in ZnS@ZIF-8 composite resulted in the generation of active hydrogen (*H). Benefitting from the high concentration of H 2 O 2 and the coexistence of redox species in the ZnS@ZIF-8/O 2 /SSL system, various chlorinated organic pollutants could be dechlorinated and mineralized. In addition, a possible mechanism for photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production was also proposed. Importantly, the proposed process did not involve an additional sacrificial agent or Fenton-like catalysts. This work provides insights into the potential application of ZnS@ZIF-8 composite for H 2 O 2 production and wastewater treatment.

InP quantum dots (QDs) are considered as the most promising alternative to Cd-based QDs with lower toxicity, and emission spectrum tunability ranging from the visible to near-infrared region. Although high-quality fluorescent InP QDs have been successfully synthesized by several groups, the rigorous synthesis conditions hinder its practical use in display devices. In this work, for the first time, we introduce Zn2+ into the growth stage of the InP QDs to prepare an InP–In(Zn)P core, and then the as-grown InP–In(Zn)P cores were consecutively coated with typical double shells of inner ZnSe and outer ZnS. The final InP–In(Zn)P/ZnSe/ZnS core/shell/shell QDs exhibited a maximum photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield (QY) of 94.3% and have tunable emissions from yellow (569 nm) to red (630 nm), showing a potential application in display devices. Above all, compared with other related studies, the excellent PL properties were obtained in relatively milder conditions (ultimate vacuum level of 400 mTorr). The results of this study provide guidance for the commercial application of InP QDs as a viable alternative to Cd-based QDs.

When internally polarized by mechanical energy, piezoelectric materials can establish polarization electric field and provide driving force for separating photogenerated carriers. Herein, S vacancies are introduced as an intermediate to make metal ions form coordination bond with F - on PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) surface, and the built-in electric field is intimately related to polarized electric field. We successfully synthesized ZnS/Bi 2 S 3 -PVDF film photocatalyst containing S vacancies (ZnS-V S /Bi 2 S 3 -PVDF). Polarized electric field on PVDF caused by ultrasonic cavitation and built-in electric field formed between ZnS-V S /Bi 2 S 3 heterojunction structure are beneficial to interfacial charge transferring. Theoretical calculation simulation demonstrate that the synergistic effect of the double electric fields is propitious to inhibit the recombination of carriers. The hydrogen evolution rate of ZnS-V S /Bi 2 S 3 -PVDF reaches 10.07 mmol h −1 g −1 . Moreover, it has excellent reversibility and facile recovery capacity. This work provides new platform for photocatalytic reduction of hydrogen evolution and is expected to contribute to clean energy production.
