A detailed understanding of the role of Y in Cu/ZnO/ZrO 2 catalysts for methanol synthesis was studied by XRD, HRTEM, TPR, TPD, N 2 O titration and XPS techniques in this work. The addition of Y enhances the interaction between Cu and ZnO. With the increase of Y content, the crystal size of Cu and ZnO decreased and Cu 0 surface area increased, CO 2 /H 2 -TPD exhibited the larger CO 2 and H 2 desorption peak at relative high temperature, XPS confirmed the reduction degree of ZnO to Zn 0 on the catalyst surface also increased, and forming more Cu-ZnO x active sites. However, excess Y content leads to a much stronger interaction between Cu and ZnO, which is not beneficial for migration and stabilization of the formed ZnO x species during the reaction atmosphere, and thus generating less Cu-ZnO x sites for methanol synthesis. This work enlightens the migratable and metastabe of the formed ZnO x species on Cu surface by regulation of promoter and offers a perspective for exploring Cu-ZnO interactions in modified Cu/ZnO/ZrO 2 catalysts.

Optimizing high solar reflectance and infrared radiation in composites faces challenges like optical imbalance and instability. This study used efficient impregnation to uniformly disperse ZrO₂ onto ordered mesoporous SBA-15. First-principles calculations revealed robust covalent bonds and charge redistribution at the ZrO₂/SBA-15 interface, yielding exceptional stability (adhesion energy: 1.91 J/m 2 ). This multi-interface structure significantly enhanced optical and thermal radiation properties. With 10 wt% Zr loading, the composite pigment achieved ultra-high solar reflectance (96.8 %, 0.3–2.5 μm) and hemispherical emissivity (0.98, 8–13 μm). The work clarifies the link between atomic-scale interface interactions and macroscopic optical/thermal properties, providing foundational insights for designing stable, high-performance composites for optical and thermal management.

The biodegradability and good mechanical property of magnesium alloys make them potential biomedical materials . However, their rapid corrosion rate in the human body’s environment impairs these advantages and limits their clinical use. In this work, a compact zirconia (ZrO 2 ) nanofilm was fabricated on the surface of a magnesium-strontium (Mg-Sr) alloy by the atomic layer deposition (ALD) method, which can regulate the thickness of the film precisely and thus also control the corrosion rate. Corrosion tests reveal that the ZrO 2 film can effectively reduce the corrosion rate of Mg-Sr alloys that is closely related to the thickness of the film. The cell culture test shows that this kind of ZrO 2 film can also enhance the activity and adhesion of osteoblasts on the surfaces of Mg-Sr alloys. Statement of Significance The significance of the current work is to develop a zirconia nanofilm on biomedical MgSr alloy with controllable thickness precisely through atomic layer deposition technique. By adjusting the thickness of nanofilm, the corrosion rate of Mg-Sr alloy can be modulated, thereafter, the degradation rate of Mg-based alloys can be controlled precisely according to actual clinical requirement. In addition, this zirconia nanofilm modified Mg-Sr alloys show excellent biocompatibility than the bare samples. Hence, this work provides a new surface strategy to control the degradation rate while improving the biocompatibility of substrates.

The application of metal oxide is limited due to low conductivity, weak combination, poor dispersion, and hard nanocrystallization in vanadium redox flow battery. Herein, metal–organic framework (MOF) was firstly employed to prepare metal oxide and porous carbon nanocomposite, which was used to ultra-uniformly decorate graphite felt by in-situ growth. Graphite felt was modified with UiO-66 (Zr-MOF) nanoparticle using hydrothermal synthesis followed by conversion into porous nanocomposite (ZrO 2 @C) via high-temperature carbonization. ZrO 2 @C owns large surface area, regular arrangement of ZrO 2 , and high conductivity, which provides large reaction place, high active site density, and rapid electron transfer for redox reaction. Therefore, ZrO 2 @C can boost the electrochemical performance of graphite felt for VO 2+ /VO 2 + and V 3+ /V 2+ reactions by promoting diffusion, charge transfer, and electron transport, systematically. The modified flow cell using ZrO 2 @C/GF has better stability and higher utilization of electrolyte than pristine cell during 500-cycle test. ZrO 2 @C/GF decreases electrochemical polarization of cell at different current densities. At 200 mA cm −2 , voltage efficiency (77.5%) and energy efficiency (75.2%) of modified cell increase by 14.6% and 13.9% respectively compared with pristine cell. The modified cell can operate at a high current density up to 300 mA cm −2 and shows a 62.4% of energy efficiency. The cell performance in this study is superior to that reported in previous metal oxide-related works. This work presents a design allowing MOF-derived catalyst with nano size, high conductivity, good adhesion, and uniform dispersion, simultaneously.

The phase relationships of the ternary system Eu 2 O 3 - La 2 O 3 - ZrO 2 and binary Eu 2 O 3 - La 2 O 3 subsystem were experimentally and thermodynamically studied. Six three-phase fields and nine two-phase ones in the Eu 2 O 3 - La 2 O 3 - ZrO 2 system were investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and electron probe microanalysis with wavelength dispersive spectrometer at 1873 K and 1673 K. Nevertheless, there only existed a two-phase region in the Eu 2 O 3 - La 2 O 3 system in the temperature range from 1873 K to 1673 K. After that, the ternary mixing parameters for the system Eu 2 O 3 - La 2 O 3 - ZrO 2 including the binary interaction parameters in the Eu 2 O 3 - La 2 O 3 subsystem are optimized with the CALPHAD (CALculation of PHAse Diagrams) method, based on obtained experimental results. The high-temperature phase relationships and the special type of continuous solid solutions (La 2-x Eu x Zr 2 O 7 ) investigated in present work will contribute to exploring new materials with specific properties such as optical transparency.

Magnesium (Mg) and its alloys face challenges in clinical applications due to their high degradation rates and low antibacterial properties. To overcome these challenges, this study employed an electrolyte containing elements such as F, Ca, P, Si, Sr, and Ag to perform soft spark micro-arc oxidation (MAO) on ZrO 2 –AZ91D Mg alloy. The research encompassed analysis of the MAO process, characterization of the composite coating's phase composition and elemental valence states, measurement of the physicochemical properties of the coating, as well as evaluation of biological properties including cell adhesion, protein adsorption, cytotoxicity, and antibacterial activity. This study investigated the mechanisms underlying osteogenesis and antibacterial effects of co-doped coatings, and examined the influence of bioactive elements on the performance of MAO coatings. The results demonstrated that the co-doped F/Ca/Sr/Ag particle-containing MAO composite coating exhibited excellent wettability and corrosion resistance. Additionally, the coating displayed remarkable protein adsorption capacity, superior adhesion to MC3T3-E1 osteoblast cells, and excellent antibacterial efficacy against Staphylococcus aureus, all while showing negligible toxicity.

High-performance aerogel materials hold significant potential for thermal management applications. However, the widespread utilization of conventional ceramic granular aerogels is constrained by their inherent brittleness and rigidity. Herein, an additive blow spinning strategy is introduced for fabricating 3D ZrO2@mullite nanofibrous aerogels with complex morphologies and lamellar structures. A spinnable solution comprising polysiloxane and polyaluminum was synthesized and blow spinning was carried out at a high flow rate, typically ranging from 10 to 30 mL h−1. By incorporating ZrO2 nanocrystals as a reinforcing phase, ZrO2@mullite nanofibers with enhanced mechanical properties are produced through pyrolysis. Utilizing a customized additive spinning strategy, 3D ZrO2@mullite fibrous aerogels with various complex morphologies (such as conical and cubic) and lamellar structures are achieved. Inter-layer spaces of fibrous aerogels can be controlled within 20–100 μm, while the fiber diameter varies in the 0.5–1.5 μm range. These 3D ZrO2@mullite fibrous aerogels showcase remarkable attributes including high compressibility over 60%, high-temperature resistance up to 1300 °C and remarkable bendability of around 360°, and their thermal conductivity remains between 0.01 and 0.026 W m−1 K−1, which paves the way for further advancements in tailored fibrous aerogels.

Structural evolution is essential for the fundamental understanding of high-temperature behavior and optimizing of ceramic micro/nanofibers. In the present work, the effects of structural evolution on the high temperature stability and flexibility of Al 2 O 3 -ZrO 2 -La 2 O 3 (AZLO) fibrous membranes were fully investigated. The evolution of precursor fiber pyrolysis, phase transformation and microstructure were characterized by TG/DSC, IR, XRD, SEM, ESB and HRTEM. From 800 to 1200°C, the dual-phasic structure of amorphous Al 2 O 3 and fine ZrO 2 and La 2 Zr 2 O 7 grain contributed to the thermal stability and flexibility of AZLO fibrous membranes. At 1300°C, solid-state metathesis reaction between amorphous Al 2 O 3 and intermediate phase La 2 Zr 2 O 7 led to the formation of fine LaAl 11 O 18 and ZrO 2 grain. The interlaced distribution of fine ZrO 2 particles and platelet-like LaAl 11 O 18 became the new fundament of thermal stability and flexibility of AZLO fibrous membranes. AZLO fibrous membranes could maintain its excellent high temperature stability and flexibility up to 1300°C and possessed a low room temperature thermal conductivity of 35.7 mW m −1 K −1 . The present work provided a novel perspective for the rational design of Al 2 O 3 -ZrO 2 fibers from the view of structural evolution.

Achieving a balance between mechanical robustness and tribological performance in epoxy resins remains a central challenge in polymer engineering. A rigid–flexible coupling design strategy is presented to construct an integrated fluorinated graphite/ZrO 2 (FGZ) heterostructure through controlled intercalation of ZrO 2 nanoparticles. This architected heterostructure simultaneously enhances thermal stability, mechanical properties, and tribological performance in epoxy composites. With only 1.2 wt% FGZ, the resulting composite exhibits a 32.4% increase in thermal decomposition temperature, along with significant improvements in flexural strength (50.1%) and flexural energy absorption (205.3%). In addition, the composite shows a low friction coefficient of 0.1673 and a 64.5% reduction in wear rate under a 15 N load compared to pure epoxy resin, indicating excellent tribological behavior. These improvements are attributed to the synergistic effect of the rigid–flexible heterostructure. In this mechanism, rigid ZrO 2 nanoparticles serve as nanoscale supports that help maintain the structural integrity of graphite layers while promoting progressive delamination. This process facilitates the continuous supply of low-shear fluorinated graphite at the sliding interface, while the released ZrO 2 nanoparticles further contribute to interfacial stabilization and transfer-film reinforcement. This work may provide a useful design concept for multifunctional fillers through cooperative rigid–flexible heterostructures.

Surface-modified zirconia (PCmZrO 2 ) nanoparticles were prepared by mixing propylene carbonate (PC) with nano-ZrO 2 in methanol at PC/ZrO 2 weight ratios ranging from 5 to 40 wt%. PMMA/ZrO 2 and PMMA/PCmZrO 2 polymer nanocomposites were then fabricated via melt blending in a Haake Rheomix Lab mixer at 210 °C for 6 min (in which ZrO 2 content was fixed at 2.5 wt% for all samples). Melt flow index measurements showed that the processability of the nanocomposites increased with increasing PC/ZrO 2 ratio (or PC content). Notably, raising the PC/ZrO 2 ratio from 0 to 40 wt% improved both the elastic modulus and elongation at break of the PMMA/ZrO 2 nanocomposite. The elongation at break increased from 5.1 to 6.6%, while the elastic modulus rose from 1587 MPa to a plateau value of around 1611 MPa. The bending strength of the nanocomposites reached a maximum of 113 MPa at a PC/ZrO 2 ratio of 20 wt%. DSC analysis indicated that the glass transition temperature (T g ) of PMMA/ZrO 2 remained nearly unchanged after PC modification of ZrO 2 . In contrast, DMTA revealed a slight increase in T g for PMMA/PCmZrO 2 nanocomposites (115 °C) compared with the PMMA/ZrO 2 sample (112 °C), suggesting restricted molecular mobility due to interfacial interactions. FESEM observations confirmed that PC modification led to a more uniform dispersion of nano-ZrO 2 in the PMMA matrix. Overall, surface modification of nano-ZrO 2 with 20 wt% of PC/ZrO 2 significantly enhanced the mechanical performance and processability of PMMA/ZrO 2 nanocomposites, while also providing a slight improvement in their thermal properties. Graphical abstract Propylene carbonate (PC) surface modification improves the dispersity of ZrO 2 nanoparticles in PMMA, enhancing processability, mechanical, thermal stability and rheological properties of PMMA/ZrO 2 nanocomposite.

In the present work, Hf 0.5 Zr 0.5 O 2 (HZO) ferroelectric thin films were deposited on Pt/Ti/SiO 2 /Si substrates by chemical solution deposition (CSD), and the effects of annealing temperature and ZrO 2 interlayer insertion on their phase structure and ferroelectric properties were systematically investigated. The results show that a higher annealing temperature promotes the formation of the ferroelectric orthorhombic (o) phase, with the film annealed at 800 °C reaching a remanent polarization (P r ) of 26.51 μC/cm 2 . Building on this, a ZrO 2 interlayer strategy was adopted to optimize the ferroelectric performance further. Rietveld refinement and HAADF-STEM analyses reveal that the multilayer architecture, formed by alternately inserted ZrO 2 interlayers, provides additional nucleation sites and introduces interfacial stress, thereby inducing the preferential crystallization of the o phase. The multilayer film reaches a remanent polarization as high as 63.05 μC/cm 2 , outperforming previously reported CSD-prepared HfO 2 -based ferroelectric films, and shows no obvious fatigue after 10 7 cycles. This work offers a low-cost and reliable route to high-performance HfO 2 -based ferroelectric films and holds promise for nonvolatile memory applications.

Developing high-performance, non-precious-metal catalysts that operate efficiently at low temperatures remains a pivotal challenge for CO2 methanation, particularly for systems with high active metal loadings where nanoparticle sintering often compromises performance. Herein, Mn-promoted Ni/ZrO2 catalysts with 40 wt % Ni were prepared via a Pechini method, demonstrating exceptional low-temperature performance. Under atmospheric pressure, the optimized 5Mn–Ni/ZrO2 catalyst achieved stable 70% CO2 conversion, near-100% CH4 selectivity, and a stable CH4 yield of 150 mmol/g/h for 117 h at 225 °C. Comprehensive characterization (XRD, TEM, XPS, H2-TPR, CO2-TPD, H2-TPD) revealed that Mn doping facilitates NiO reduction with higher Ni dispersion, increases electron density on Ni sites, and increases the population of medium-strength basic sites and oxygen vacancies on the ZrO2 support. These synergistic modifications collectively promote CO2 adsorption, H2 adsorption, and catalyst reducibility. In situ DRIFTS further identified a formate-mediated pathway, in which Mn promotes the stabilization and subsequent hydrogenation of the HCOO* intermediate. This work demonstrates that rational exploitation of promoter-support synergy can overcome the dispersion limitations inherent to high-loading Ni catalysts, providing an effective design strategy for advanced, low-temperature CO2 methanation catalysts.
