In order to investigate the role of the lignin in the co-pyrolysis process of the sludge and the cellulose, the co-pyrolysis process was carried out in a thermogravimetry analyzer. The result shows that when the proportion of the sludge:cellulose:lignin was 1:1:0.4, the main co-pyrolysis temperature range was narrower, the ultimate pyrolysis weight loss was more, and the synergistic effect had a longer duration time. When the pyrolysis temperature was below 400°C, the addition of the lignin could promote the co-pyrolysis process of the cellulose and the sludge, such as the decrease of the activation energy E.

Cellulose nanofibrils (CNF), as a kind of renewable, sustainable and biodegradable natural-based nanomaterial, have shown great potential application in numerous fields due to their fascinating properties. Some properties of CNF-based materials are closely related to their cellulose polymorph and crystallinity index. In this work, we present a facile method for the generation of CNF with tunable polymorphs and crystallinity via the alkali treatment of jute fibers under various conditions followed by (TEMPO)-mediated oxidation and mechanical disintegration. The changes of the cellulose polymorphs and crystallinity induced by alkali treatment on the jute fibers and consequently obtained CNF were well investigated by synchrotron radiation wide-angle X-ray scattering (SR-WAXS), Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), respectively. Moreover, the morphology of the as-prepared CNF was also examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It has been found that the CNF showed an identical cellulose polymorph to their source material, but a much higher crystallinity index, which revealed the feasibility of CNF generated from jute fibers with tunable polymorphs and crystallinity indexes.

Hemicellulose-based composites have become promising candidates for eco-friendly packaging applications because of their biodegradability and cost-effectiveness. However, the inherently poor mechanical properties of hemicellulose-based composites largely hinder their potential for targeted application. Fortunately, nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC), an eye-catching nanomaterial, may offer opportunities for addressing the above issue due to its outstanding mechanical properties and environmental friendliness. Herein, a comparative study was conducted on the effect of unmodified and cationically modified nanocrystalline cellulose (CNCC) on the overall properties of the as-prepared hemicelluloses (HC)/sorbitol (SB) films. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) image shows that the addition of CNCC imparted a relatively smooth surface to the obtained HC/SB films in comparison to NCC. Furthermore, CNCC reinforced HC/SB films exhibited improved thermal stability as compared to that with NCC. From rheological behavior evaluation, the presence of NCC, particularly CNCC, had an important effect on thickening HC/SB suspensions. The tensile stress of the composite films with 9% NCC and 9% CNCC was 9.18 and 10.44 MPa, respectively, which was increased by 14 and 30% in comparison to that of pure HC/SB film (8.05 MPa). The marked increase in elastic modulus as a function of the added NCC or CNCC was also identified. This result strongly supports the conclusion that the addition of NCC or CNCC was effective in improving the mechanical properties of HC/SB films.

It is still a challenging global task for oil/water separation. Here we fabricate superhydrophobic magnetic cellulose sponge (SMCE) that can be used to separate free oil/water mixtures and surfactant-stabilized W/O emulsions. The simple modification includes only two steps: a thin layer of ferroferric oxide (Fe3O4) was coated on cellulose sponge surface via codeposition method, and subsequently magnetic cellulose sponge was modified with hexadecyltrimethoxysilane, which could react with Fe3O4 or hydroxyl groups of cellulose. The purpose of coating Fe3O4 is to increase the roughness of the surface and recycle the sample by magnetic force. SMCE could separate oil–water mixtures with a high separation efficiency and good reusability. The sample is green, low cost, and environmental friendly, which makes it a promising candidate to be used in oil–water separation.

Aqueous batteries offer inherent safety and low cost, but the inherently fixed physicochemical functionality and poor interfacial compatibility of existing binders limit their ability to boost positive electrode performance. Here we present a hydroxyl-chemistry regulation strategy that transforms cellulose, an abundant biopolymer on Earth, into a high-affinity, interfacially compatible binder that stabilizes high-capacity, shuttling-prone positive electrodes. By selectively opening the rigid cellulose ring structure within its molecular chains, we enhance dipole polarity, chain flexibility, and intermolecular hydrogen-bond density, thereby increasing functional-group accessibility and interfacial adhesion. These molecular-level modifications drive the formation of a dense nanofibrous network that conformally encapsulates active particles and anchors polyiodides, accelerating redox kinetics and reinforcing electrode stability. Iodine positive electrode incorporating the engineered binder deliver a reversible capacity of 150.9 mAh g −1 at 20 A g −1 , with pouch cells retaining 98.07% capacity after 3000 h at 0.2 A g −1 . The binder also enables layer-by-layer fabrication of high mass loading electrodes, and benefits other dissolution-prone positive electrodes such as V 2 O 5 . Overall, this work establishes a general and sustainable route for the molecular engineering of biopolymer binders, expanding their role in the design of advanced aqueous batteries.

The rise of additive manufacturing technology has enabled the personalization of cushioning materials. This study developed a cellulose-based hydrogel that can be 3D printed, featuring a crosslinked interpenetrating network (IPN) of hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC)/methacrylic anhydride-modified polyvinyl alcohol (PVA-MA) reinforced with carboxylated cellulose nanofibers (CNF) and quaternized chitosan (HACC). Multiple characterization techniques confirmed the successful construction of the crosslinked interpenetrating network structure, and the relationship between the hydrogel's crosslinked network structure and its cushioning performance was investigated. We rigorously confirmed that sodium citrate solution post-treatment induces ionic crosslinking significantly boosts the cushioning performance of the hydrogels, via comparative analysis of PMHI and PMHI-Na samples. Specifically, at 50% compressive strain, it demonstrated an energy loss coefficient of 61.4%, a Young's modulus of 448.22 kPa, and a static minimum cushioning coefficient below 0.5. Its performance surpassed that of traditional commercial cushioning materials like expanded polyethylene (EPE) and expanded polystyrene (EPS). To address customized demands for cushioning packaging, the printability of hydrogels for additive manufacturing (3D printing) was systematically investigated. Hydrogels containing ethyl (2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl) phenylphosphinate (TPO-L), a high-efficiency UV photoinitiator, demonstrated rapid curing rates while exhibiting compressive strengths up to 547.40 kPa and elongation at break up to 229.40%, enabling high-quality 3D printing. This work provides a promising approach to biomass-based cushioning materials with improved mechanical properties and 3D printability, advancing the large-scale application of biomass cushioning materials. Nature has engineered hierarchical and heterogeneous lignocellulose structure, among which lignin significantly contributes to mechanical behavior due to its unique molecular structure and micro-distribution pattern. Inspired by this fact, we unveil the potential of intrinsic lignin to toughen and hydro-stabilize cellulose nanopaper (CNP)—a crucial advancement for its deployment in demanding structural applications. By examining CNPs assembled from nanofibrils with controlled variations in size distribution and lignin content, we show that an optimal level of intrinsic lignin simultaneously enhances both the elastic stiffness and inelastic deformability of CNP. This strengthening and toughening effect is attributed primarily to the significant influence of lignin on the topological structure and interfacial behavior of the constituent nanofibrils. In particular, we clarify the lignin-mediated toughening mechanism in CNP through a combined experimental-simulation approach: amorphous lignin undergoes conformational evolution during interfibrillar sliding, which effectively absorbs and dissipates energy, thereby significantly enhancing the toughness of the hierarchical cellulose matrix. Additionally, the hydro-stability of CNP is enhanced by lignin with intrinsic amphiphilicity, which plays a critical role in moderating interfacial wettability and thereby delaying the hygroscopic kinetics of cellulose assemblies. Therefore, this work presents a dual-purpose strategy that harnesses the inherent functionality of lignocellulosic components to simultaneously toughen and hydro-stabilize the resulting nanomaterials. Biomass-based conductive aerogels with excellent biocompatibility, high porosity, and facile functionalization are the key materials for new-generation sustainable high-performance piezoresistive sensors. However, the single lamellar structure of conventional aerogels and the inherent agglomeration tendency of conductive nanomaterials severely hamper the mechanical and strain sensing properties of biomass-based aerogels. Herein, inspired by the natural bamboo-node structure, a novel gelation-confinement strategy was developed to construct a unique bamboo-node-reinforced structure by incorporating metallogels (MOGs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into cellulose nanofibers (CNFs). The resulting CNF-based aerogel exhibits excellent mechanical stability and can withstand over 5000 compression cycles at 50% strain. Meanwhile, integration of the aerogel into a flexible piezoresistive sensor endows the device with comprehensive strain sensing properties, including high linear sensitivity (S = 4.14 kPa −1 in the 0–2 kPa range; S = 1.88 kPa −1 in the 2–92 kPa range) and a low-pressure detection limit of 2.21 Pa. These multifunctional features endow the composite aerogel with great application potential in motion monitoring.

A booming demand for wearable electronic devices urges the development of multifunctional smart fabrics. However, it is still facing a challenge to fabricate multifunctional smart fabrics with satisfactory mechanical property, excellent Joule heating performance, highly efficient photothermal conversion, outstanding electromagnetic shielding effectiveness, and superior anti-bacterial capability. Here, a MoSe 2 @MXene heterostructure-based multifunctional cellulose fabric is fabricated by depositing MXene nanosheets onto cellulose fabric followed by a facile hydrothermal method to grow MoSe 2 nanoflakes on MXene layers. A low-voltage Joule heating therapy platform with rapid Joule heating response (up to 230 °C in 25 s at a supplied voltage of 4 V) and stable performance under repeated bending cycles (up to 1000 cycles) is realized. Besides, the multifunctional fabric also exhibits excellent photothermal performance (up to 130 °C upon irradiation for 25 s with a light intensity of 400 mW cm −2 ), outstanding electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (37 dB), and excellent antibacterial performances (>90% anti-bacterial rate toward Escherichia coli , Bacillus subtilis , and Staphylococcus aureus ). This work offers an efficient avenue to fabricate multifunctional wearable thermal therapy devices for mobile healthcare and personal thermal management.

Needleless electrospinning has been a simple preparation technique for nanofiber output upscaling. However, cellulose acetate (CA) has never been tried before for its high volatility in solvent acetone. By comparing the different solvent system of acetone/dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), acetone/dimethylacetamide (DMAc) and acetic acid/water, the electrospun CA nanofiber was successfully prepared via metal plate needleless spinneret. The results showed that electrospun CA nanofiber could be steadily and continuously obtained in acetone/DMSO = 2/1 v/v solvent system with output around 10–20 ml h−1. The solution viscosity, conductivity and surface tension were measured with different amount of amphiphilic surfactant added. With higher amount of surfactant, the solution viscosity slightly decreased, and the conductivity increased steadily. The surface tension decreased to a stable constant with increasing surfactant amount. The correlation between the three independent variables and the average diameter and their CV value of electrospun CA nanofibers was investigated by SPSS Pearson partial correlation analysis. Solution viscosity was highly correlated with mean diameter. The linear regression analysis of the solution viscosity and the mean diameter of CA nanofibers was conducted. The predicted value of mean diameter of nanofibers had a high fitting goodness with the real value. Finally, the differences between electrospun CA nanofiber via single needle and needleless metal plate spinneret were also compared.

A new way of controllable releasing menthol with amorphous silica is reported for the first time. Porous silica adsorbed menthol in 373-413 K and then was covered with cellulose acetate film to form a carrier-embedded menthol. The sealed menthol would be released at elevated temperatures once the cover fractured. Here, the influence of temperature and nature of sorbent on the adsorption of menthol along with the covering manner were investigated carefully, and the thermal release of menthol was studied with headspace gas chromatography (HS-GC) method. Silica adsorbed about 400 mg g −1 of menthol at the optimal adsorption conditions and released most of them at about 473 K. Preliminary application in non-combustible cigarette proven the feasibility of thermal release of menthol with the covered silica carrier.

Exploring a method to fabricate robust and stable 3D conductive networks in polymers matrix is still the challenge in the research and development of electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials. Here, a feasible approach is provided to produce high-performance, silicone-doped MXene EMI shielding composites. The trace amount of hydroxyethyl cellulose is deliberately applied as gels to construct the MXene aerogels with a stable and highly conductive network by the freeze-drying method. For more desirable mechanical and waterproof properties, the silicone resin is introduced into the MXene aerogels on purpose. The best silicone-doped MXene EMI shielding composites display a superior electrical conductivity of 3166.4 S m −1 , and EMI shield effectiveness of 74.5 dB at the X-band (8.2–12.4 GHz). It is worth noting that the introduction of silicone resins sharply improves the hydrophobicity of EMI shielding materials to a range of water contact angle of about 151.5°–155.0°. This is a promising method to make MXene-based EMI shielding composites with self-cleaning function.
