Organic charge-transfer cocrystals exhibit fantastic physical properties owning to their multi-component synergistic and collective effect. In spite of the abundant material supplies, the cocrystals people prepared so far are far less than expectation. Here, we reported the preparation, structure and optical properties of a mixed stacked cocrystal of 2,2':6′,2″-terpyridine and 1,2,4,5-tetracyanobenzene. The structural and optical properties were analyzed by using single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD), FTIR, Raman, optical absorption and emission spectra experimentally and the molecular electrostatic potential (MEP), Hirshfeld surface , the reduced density gradient (RDG), frontier molecular orbitals (FMO) theory, inter-fragment charge transfer (IFCT) analysis and time dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) theoretically. The TTC sample exhibits strong up-conversion luminescence that is absent in their individual components. Theoretical analysis indicates that the NLO properties of TTC may be due to a significant increase in two-photon transition probabilities δ TPA related to intermolecular charge transfer (CT) interactions. Our results may be helpful for a better understanding of NLO mechanism in ground state CT cocrystals.

Improving the flame retardancy and anti-dripping ability of polyamide 6 (PA6) fabrics through facile textile finishing technique is of great interest. This study focused on the flame retardant (FR) modification of PA6 fabric using three sulfur/nitrogen-containing compounds with different sulfur valence through exhaustion process. We further explored and compared the thermal stability, heat release ability, FR performance and mechanism of guanidine sulfamate (GAS), thiourea (THU), ammonium sulfate (AMS) on PA6 fabric. The modified PA6 fabrics displayed self-extinguishing ability without dripping action. They also possessed the low damaged length of 8–12 cm and high LOI of about 31.0%, suggesting good flame retardancy. As a comparison, GAS and AMS with positive sulfur valence had higher FR efficiency than THU with negative sulfur valence on PA6 fabric. GAS and AMS modification also decreased the heat release of PA6 fabric by about 20.1% and 16.2%, respectively. According to the thermal stability and char residue analyses, GAS, THU and AMS mainly worked through the gas-phase FR mechanism. A condensed FR action also occurred for THU modified PA6 fabric. Besides, no obvious influence on mechanical performance of PA6 fabric was observed.

A rapid and simple method for the determination of 6 biogenic amines (BAs) in food was established on HPLC-MS /MS without derivatization. Samples were extracted with 5% perchloric acid and cleaned with n-hexane for lipid removal. The analytes were separated on Waters XBridge® HILIC (150 mm × 2.1 mm, 3.5 µm) and analyzed with multiple-reaction monitoring (MRM) mode after positive electrospray ionization on HPLC-MS/MS. Good linearity with high correlation coefficient was obtained between 10-1000 µg/L for cadaverine (CAD), putrescine (PUT), tyramine (TYR) and 2-phenylethylamine (2-PHE) and between 1-100 µg/L for histamine (HIS) and tryptamine (TRY), with the detection limits of the method ranging from 0.1 mg/kg for HIS and TRY, and 1.0 mg/kg for CAD, PUT, TYR and 2-PHE, which are under the residue limit of Chinese regulation. Spiking experiments demonstrated good recoveries between 70.2-114.6%, with relative standard deviations (RSDs) between 0.44-13.01%. This method was validated for BAs determination in liquor, fermented meat products, vegetable products, soybean products, dairy products, seafood and its derived products. These results promise high feasibility for BAs monitoring in various food with easy-to-operate and fast sample preparation process, stable analysis on HPLC-MS/MS without derivatization.

Objective Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by the loss of dopaminergic neurons in substantia nigra (SN). Our previous study demonstrated kukoamine A (KuA) to exhibit strong neuroprotective effects through antioxidative stress, and autophagy in MPTP/MPP + -induced PD models in vivo and in vitro . It is necessary to evaluate the efficacy of the anti-PD effects under various models. Methods In the present study, total chemical synthesis was used to obtain KuA, which performed low content in Lycii Cortex . Then, 6-OHDA-induced PD model of PC12 cells was used to investigate the effects of KuA on PD. Results Our results demonstrated that KuA ameliorated cell loss and mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) loss, and inhibited Bax/Bcl-2 ratio increase that were induced by 6-OHDA. Iron accumulation in SN is thought to participate in neuronal death in PD, which subsequently resulted in oxidative stress and overexpression of α-synuclein caused by iron metabolism protein disorder. In our study, KuA could chelate cellular iron content and decrease iron influx. Moreover, KuA could upregulate the expression of ferroportin1 and Hephaestin, downregulate the expression of DMT1, TfR, and Ferritin to maintain cellular iron homeostasis avoiding neuronal death from cellular iron deposition. Moreover, KuA could decrease the expression of a-synuclein in cells. All the results indicated that KuA protected against neurotoxin-induced PD due to the apoptosis inhibition and iron homeostasis maintaining. Conclusion KuA treatment might represent a neuroprotective treatment for PD.

The density and viscosity of pure liquid 2, 4-dichlorofluorobenzene and 2, 6-dichlorofluorobenzene were measured in the temperature range of (318.15–348.15) K at the local atmospheric pressure of 99.8 kPa. The saturated vapor pressures of pure 2, 4-dichlorofluorobenzene and 2, 6-dichlorofluorobenzene and the isobaric vapor-liquid equilibria (VLE) data for the 2, 4-dichlorofluorobenzene + 2, 6-dichlorofluorobenzene binary system at atmospheric pressure were determined experimentally by a modified Rose still. The density values were accurately described by DIPPR equation. The viscosity data were well correlated using the Litovitz, Ghatee and VFT, and Andrade equations, and the VFT equation shows the best accuracy. Both Antoine and Riedel equations can well describe the relationship between saturated vapor pressure and temperature, which meet the requirements of engineering design. The Riedel equation is more accurate due to the lower average relative deviation. The VLE data were successfully correlated with NRTL and Wilson activity coefficient models, and the interaction parameters were obtained. The result indicates that there is no azeotrope in the binary mixture. The above thermodynamic properties of pure component and the VLE data presented are crucial for the design and operation of distillation for the isomeric mixture separation of 2, 4-dichlorofluorobenzene + 2, 6-dichlorofluorobenzene.

The electrospun polyamide 6 (PA6) membranes are treated with different methods. The rough surfaces with different protuberances size and the fiber diameter are prepared by wet, dry heat, wet heat, and ethanol treatments under relaxation, and the formation mechanisms are analyzed. A relative stable structure of PA6 membrane is also prepared by ethanol treatment under tension, and its structure is as same as the untreated membrane. The dynamic water contact angles (WCAs) of the treated membranes are measured. The starting WCA of the membrane with wet heat treatment under relaxation is 90.95°, which is larger than those of wet, dry heat, and ethanol treatments under relaxation. The effects of surface morphologies with different treatments on wettability are analyzed. For obtaining hydrophobicity, the membrane with wet heat treatment under relaxation was coated by polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). The WCA of the membrane increases to 127.1° after coating. From another point of view, the WCA of the PVDF/treated PA6 membrane is much larger than that of the pure casting PVDF membrane, which means the rough surface of the treated PA6 membrane can improve the hydrophobicity of the PVDF membrane. Furthermore, the membrane is endowed with superhydrophobicity (WCA of 153.5°) after being coated by SiO 2 /PVDF due to the multilevel structured surface roughness. It is a relative low cost and convenient operation method to prepare the superhydrophobic material. The results provide a novel preparation method of the superhydrophobic material and a treatment method of the electrospun PA6 membrane to obtain a stable structure. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Cellulose graft copolymers are an effective way to endow new properties to cellulose substrate, as well the rigidity, regularity, and helicity of the cellulose backbone could induce the self-assembly of supramolecular structures. In this work, right-handed helical poly(phenyl isocyanide)s (PPI n ) were grafted selectively onto C-6-cellulose. Alkyne-terminated PPI n was synthesized by living polymerization of right-handed phenyl isocyanide monomer using an alkyne-terminated palladium(II) complex as an initiator/catalyst, and were grafted onto the C-6 of the cellulose backbone (Cell-6-g-PPI n ) at various chain lengths using copper-catalyzed alkyne-azide cycloaddition (CuAAC) “click” chemistry. We confirmed the successful grafting by liquid 1 H NMR and 13 C NMR, as well as solid 13 C NMR, FTIR, and GPC. After grafting onto cellulose, the right-handed chirality of PPI n was significantly increased by 111.2%. Additionally, the Cell-6-g-PPI n exhibited better chiral recognition of L-Phe-DNSP than PPI n alone. Therefore, the helical cellulose backbone has enhanced effect on preferred helix of PPI n .

In this study, a multi-scale interface (molecular scale and nanoscale) strategy is proposed to modify basalt fibers (BF) to improve the mechanical strength of BF-reinforced PA6 composites. The target sample achieved a tensile strength of 225.9 MPa, which is 50.8 % and 31.8 % higher than that of the composites corresponding to unmodified BF and molecular scale modified BF, respectively. For multi-scaled interface, the molecular scale promotes the infiltration of the fiber by the resin matrix, and the nanoscale is conducive to the formation of a mechanical interlocking structure between the PA6 matrix and the fiber. It is through the above-mentioned dual effects of multi-scale interfaces that the BF-reinforced PA6 composites exhibit attractive mechanical properties.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy is an ultrasensitive analytical technique with high specificity, making it an ideal candidate for therapeutic drug monitoring. However, SERS measurement of drugs in biological samples is inevitably affected by the proteins adsorbed nonspecifically on metal nanoparticles, so the drugs usually require separation before SERS detection. In this work, semipermeable alginate microparticles containing gold nanoparticles were fabricated via a centrifugal microfluidic chip, and served as a reliable substrate for SERS detection of 6-thioguanine in serum without protein removal. In comparison with the conventional microfluidic methods using oil for droplet generation, this oil-free method can fabricate more clean and versatile microparticles. The microparticles were characterized by size/charge selectivity and pH response, which effectively improved anti-interference ability and SERS sensitivity for 6-thioguanine detection in serum. The microparticles were further endowed with magnetic property and SERS activity simultaneously by forming Janus structures embedded with magnetic nanoparticles and gold nanoparticles separately in independent hemispheres, which was convenient for manipulation in SERS detection. More broadly, the microparticles are potentially applicable for SERS detection of other small molecules in complex real samples.

Chronic cerebral hypoperfusion (CCH) is the leading cause of chronic cerebral dysfunction syndrome with its complex pathological mechanisms involving cortical and hippocampal neuronal loss, white matter lesions, and neuroinflammation. I-C-F-6 is a septapeptide, which has anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic effects. This study aimed to evaluate the neuroprotective effect of I-C-F-6 in chronic cerebral hypoperfusion (CCH)-induced neurological injury. C57BL/6 J mice were subjected to bilateral common carotid artery stenosis (BCAS), and BV2 microglia cells were induced with oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD). In vivo, mice were divided randomly into four groups: Sham, BCAS, GBE (30 mg/kg), and I-C-F-6 (0.5 mg/kg). In vitro, microglia were divided randomly into four groups: control, OGD, I-C-F-6 (25 μg/mL), and Shikonin (800 nmol/L). Through LFB, TUNEL, and NeuN staining, we found that I-C-F-6 was able to mitigate myelin pathology and reduce the number of apoptotic neurons. Furthermore, immunofluorescence staining revealed that I-C-F-6 was able to reduce microglia clustering and downregulate NF-κB p65. We also observed a significant downregulation of M1 phenotype microglia signature genes, such as TNF-α, iNOS, and upregulation of anti-inflammatory cytokines, such as Arg-1 and IL-10, indicating that I-C-F-6 may mainly reduce polarization towards the M1 phenotype in microglia. Notably, I-C-F-6 downregulated the expression of NF-κB signaling pathway-related proteins IKK-β and NF-κB p65, as well as pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1β and iNOS. In conclusion, I-C-F-6 can improve neurological damage, alleviate neuroinflammation, and inhibit microglia polarization to the M1 phenotype via the NF-κB signaling pathway.

BACKGROUND The exploration of a robust solid acid catalyst for the efficient hydrolysis of cellulose is a research hotspot due to the need for clean production and sustainable development. KIT-6 silica offers abundant three-dimensionally interconnected mesopores, which are expected to be superior to mesoporous structures with one- or two-dimensional channels due to faster diffusion of reactants and products during reaction. The catalytic conversion of microcrystalline cellulose is examined in detail over a functionalized KIT-6 catalyst prepared by the method of Zr addition and subsequent sulfation. RESULTS In terms of cellulose conversion and product yield, the activity of the catalysts followed the order of sulfated Zr-KIT-6 > Zr-KIT-6 > SO 4 2− -KIT-6 > KIT-6. Over the sulfated Zr-KIT-6 catalyst with a Si/Zr molar ratio of 7:1, a maximum cellulose conversion of 95.0% was achieved with glucose yield of 23.4%, 5-hydroxymethylfufural yield of 4.9% and levulinic acid yield of 11.7% under the optimized reaction conditions: reaction temperature of 200 °C, reaction time of 2 h, catalyst amount of 0.3 g, cellulose-to-water mass ratio of 1:1. CONCLUSION The sulfated Zr-KIT-6 catalyst possessed the strongest and richest Brønsted acid sites, which readily provided protons for the cleavage of β -1,4 glycosidic bonds in cellulose, thus conferring superior catalytic activity in cellulose hydrolysis. A plausible pathway at the initial stage of cellulose hydrolysis over the catalyst was proposed. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).

The azobenzene coumarin derivatives 2 – 10 , in which the coumarin moiety is linked to substituted phenyl and pyridine groups via amide bonds, and a copper complex with compound 8 ( 8-CuCl 2 ) were designed and synthesized, and their anticancer activities were investigated. Compounds 2–10 and 8-CuCl 2 exhibited different degrees of anticancer activities against four cancer cell lines (HeLa, A549, MCF-7, and HepG-2). Among them, compound 6 exhibited stronger cytotoxicity (IC 50 = 0.51 ± 0.22 μM) against A549 cell lines and was less toxic to normal cells than Doxorubicin (DOX) (IC 50 = 1.18 ± 0.03 μM). Compound 8 exhibited stronger cytotoxicity against MCF-7 cell lines than DOX with an IC 50 value 48 times higher than DOX (IC 50 = 0.42 ± 0.23 μM for 8 ; IC 50 = 20.64 ± 3.67 μM for DOX). Meanwhile, compound 8 was much less toxic to normal human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) cells than DOX with a 3000 times higher selectivity index (SI) (SI > 238.10 for 8 ; SI = 0.078 for DOX). The results of cell apoptosis and cycle assays showed that compound 6 induced apoptosis in A549 cells more considerably and blocked cells in the S phase, whereas compound 8 induced late apoptosis in MCF-7 cells and blocked cells in the S phase. Ultraviolet and fluorescence spectroscopy analyses revealed that compounds 6 and 8 bound to deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) via intercalation. In summary, compound 8 was developed as a potential and effective cytotoxicity against MCF-7 cell lines worthy of further investigation.
