MOF-818(Cu)-derived bi-nanozymes of laccase and catecholase mimics and colorimetric sensing to epinephrine

Xu Liu,Peide An,Yide Han,Hao Meng,Xia Zhang

Cu-based nanozyme shows good oxidase-like activities due to the changeable states of Cu(II) and Cu(I), which are proven to be effective in the electron transfer in the redox process. Herein, the self-made MOF-818 with more Cu(II) loading was synthesized through a modified two-steps hydrothermal routes, which was then used as a sacrificial precursor to construct copper/zirconium composite oxides nanozymes (CN-MOF-818). The pyrolysis temperature was varied to obtain the best enzyme-like activities of the resulting CN-MOF-818. The laccase-like and catecholase-like activities were evaluated by using the oxidation of the mixture of 4-aminoantipyrine (4-AAP) and 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DP), and 3,5-Di- tert -butylcatechol (3,5-DTBC) respectively. The enzyme-like activities were optimized through altering the catalytic conditions, and the corresponding enzyme catalytic kinetics including K m and V max were also determined. The enzyme-like mechanism of the CN-MOF-818 were also discussed based on EPR technique and the in-situ FT-IR analyses. In comparison with the pristine MOF-818 and the other reported Cu-based mimics, the as-prepared CN-MOF-818 exhibits the higher oxidase mimetic activities. These CN-MOF-818 can also be employed to detect the epinephrine with a low detection limit of 1.63 μM.

Highly-efficient blue neutral mononuclear copper(I) halide complexes containing bi- and mono-dentate phosphine ligands

Wen-Jin Zhang,Zi-Xing Zhou,Li Liu,Xin-Xin Zhong,Abdullah M. Asiri,Khalid A. Alamry,Fa-Bao Li,Nian-Yong Zhu,Wai-Yeung Wong,Hai-Mei Qin

Highly emissive copper halide complexes with a bidentate phosphine ligand have been paid much attention. Here, a series of four-coordinate mononuclear copper(I) halide complexes containing bi- and mono-dentate phosphine ligands, [CuX (dpmb)(PPh 3 )] (dpmb = 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)–4,5-dimethylbenzene, X = I ( 1 ), Br ( 2 ) and Cl ( 3 )), were synthesized, and their molecular structures and photophysical properties were investigated. These complexes exhibit intense blue emission in the solid state at room temperature and have peak emission wavelengths at 464–479   nm with microsecond lifetimes ( τ = 3.5−4.9   μs; Φ = 0.23−0.52). The emission of the complexes 1–3 mainly originates from MLCT, XLCT and intraligand transitions. Three complexes display moderate thermal stability.

Acidic electroreduction CO2 to formic acid via interfacial modification of Bi nanoparticles at industrial-level current

Dong Tian,Li Hongdong,Wang Zhenhui,Geng Yanling,Chang Rui,Tian Xiaofeng,Lai Jianping,Feng Shouhua,Wang Lei

Electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) in acidic media is a promising approach to overcome the unavoidable formation of carbonates in alkaline or neutral electrolytes. However, the proton-rich environment near the catalyst surface favors hydrogen evolution reactions (HER), leading to lower energy efficiency of the desired products, especially in industrial-level current densities. Here, quaternary ammonium cationic surfactant (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)) was introduced into acidic electrolyte to modulate the interfacial microenvironment, which greatly enhanced CO 2 electroreduction to formic acid (HCOOH) at the Bi/C nanoparticles electrode. Using a Bi/C nanoparticles electrode with CTAB added, constant production of formic acid was enabled with a cathodic energy efficiency of > 40% and maximum FE HCOOH (FE = Faradaic efficiency) of 86.2% at −400 mA·cm −2 over 24 h. Combined with in-situ attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, the concentration of *OCHO intermediates significantly increased after CTAB modification, confirming that the hydrophobic interface microenvironment formed by dynamic adsorption of positively charged long alkyl chains on Bi/C nanoparticle electrodes inhibited HER and improved the selectivity of CO 2 RR to HCOOH.

Antibacterial and anti-inflammatory Bi-functional carbon dots hydrogel dressing for robust promotion of wound healing

Jian Yu,Xin Huang,Xinhao Chen,Pengyu Hu,Tao Liu,Tingting Zhang,Rui Cheng,Tingting Cui,Jun Li

The abuse of antibiotics leading to bacterial resistance has emerged as a significant impediment to wound healing. Consequently, this study developed antibacterial and anti-inflammatory bi-functional carbon dots (AAB-CDs) as the primary active material for the preparation of hydrogel wound dressings, aiming to promote wound healing. The synthesized AAB-CDs exhibited ultra-small size (2.3 nm), abundant surface functional groups, high Zeta potential (30.9 mV), and excellent biocompatibility. The positively charged AAB-CDs with outstanding antibacterial properties, mitigating the risk of bacterial resistance, while the abundant surface functional groups imparted stable antioxidant performance for sustained wound anti-inflammatory effects. Moreover, in vitro experiments demonstrated that the hydrogel dressings exhibited remarkable antibacterial properties against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ), and significantly promoted the proliferation of L929 fibroblasts. In vivo experiments further substantiated the feasibility of the hydrogel dressings in promoting wound healing and histological analysis revealed the biological mechanisms underlying the promotion of wound healing. In conclusion, AAB-CDs with robust antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties hold tremendous potential for promoting wound healing, providing practical insights for the biological application of CDs.

Synthesis and structural characterization of novel visible photocatalyst Bi–TiO2/SBA-15 and its photocatalytic performance

Jing Ma,Jia Chu,Liangsheng Qiang,Juanqin Xue

Bi-doped TiO2/SBA-15 (Bi–TiO2/SBA-15) was synthesized by a wet impregnation method. It was found that SBA-15 retained its ordered hexagonal mesostructure after incorporation of TiO2 and Bi. TiO2 nanoparticles and Bi species dispersed well and anchored both in the channel and the wall of SBA-15. The photocatalytic activity was evaluated on photodegradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) under visible light irradiation (λ ≥ 420 nm). Experimental results indicated that Bi–TiO2/SBA-15 exhibited higher photocatalytic activities than pure TiO2 and TiO2/SBA-15 owing to the synergetic effects of Bi species and TiO2. The degradation of RhB by these catalysts follows the pseudo-first-order kinetic model and Bi–TiO2/SBA-15 (2.0%) was found to be the best. The effect of Bi doping on the photocatalytic activity was investigated by the density functional theory (DFT) method. The calculated results indicated that Bi doping could improve the photocatalytic activity by extending the spectral response from UV to the visible region, making the Bi–TiO2/SBA-15 active under visible light irradiation.

Construction and Mechanism Study of AC–NiO/Bi (Fe) Antibacterial Material for Bacteria Removal in Water

Zhengfang Yang,Qianqian Guo,Qisheng Wang,Qing Wang,Guanbin Wen,Bin Zhang,Yanli Nie

Graphical Using macadamia nut shell from Yunnan as raw material to prepare antibacterial material can save resources. Combining NiO with AC, adding Bi and Fe to optimize antimicrobial properties and magnetic properties.A kind of antibacterial, adsorption-degradable, recyclable and reusable material was constructed. The composite materials show a good prospect in the practical application of water treatment. Although inorganic antibacterial materials that use photocatalytic technology are widely used to inhibit bacterial growth in water bodies, the external light environment limits the efficient utilization of photocatalytic antibacterial materials. The antibacterial materials are usually in powder form and are not conducive to recycling and reuse, limiting their development in practical applications. The main antibacterial ingredient (nickel oxide) was combined with Macadamia nutshell activated carbon (AC) to maintain efficient contact between bacteria and antibacterial active ingredients to apply the material for water treatment. First, different activators (H 3 PO 4 , ZnCl 2 , and KOH) were used to prepare activated carbon (AC) from Macadamia nutshells. Among the three activators, the AC prepared with H 3 PO 4 exhibited the largest specific surface area with well-dispersed pores. Then, Bi and Fe were doped to AC-NiO to improve their antibacterial and magnetic properties. After doping, the antibacterial rate increased to 95% with significantly improved magnetic properties. Moreover, AC-NiO/Bi and AC-NiO/Fe exhibited three antibacterial mechanisms: physical damage, ionic dissolution, and oxidative stress. Finally, the antibacterial test was performed on real water samples from Dianchi Lake in China. Results suggested that AC-NiO/Bi and AC-NiO/Fe could destroy microorganisms in river water samples. The material showed significant adsorption and degradation efficiency for malachite green, methylene blue, and methyl orange dyes. Since the composite material possessed excellent magnetic separation performance, it was easily recovered after use, effectively avoiding secondary pollution while reducing the material cost in practical applications.

Ultrasensitive Bi-Mode Lateral-Flow Assay via UCNPs-Based Host-Guest Assembly of Fluorescent-Colorimetric Nanoparticles

Zhujun Ai,Huan Cai,Changjin Liu,Yan Zhao,Qing Fu,Ningke Fan,Yujian Li,Siqiao Li,Song Zhou,Chunyang Li,Juan Li,Shijia Ding,Rui Chen

Fluorescent-colorimetric nanoparticles (FCNPs) attract considerable interest as an emerging dual-signal reporter for on-site qualitative/quantitative point-of-care testing. However, the suboptimal signaling components and self-assembled structure lacking physical isolation in traditional FCNPs result in low fluorescence brightness, poor stability, and strong internal filtration effect (IFE), which severely limits their wide application in lateral flow assay (LFA). Here, ordered self-assembly for hydrophobic upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) is developed using 3D porous space magnetic dendritic mesoporous silica (MS), stepwise surface silanization, and polydopamine (PDA) flexible scaffold modification to fabricate MS@UCNPs@PDA (MSUD). With rational design, MSUD improves stability and luminescence intensity (131 times higher than quantum dot-based fluorophores), and also eliminates IFE and fluorescence background interference on LFA strips. The detection limits of MSUD-labeled LFA for qualitative and quantitative detection of methamphetamine by naked eye-based colorimetric and smartphone-based fluorescence strategy are 1.047 × 10 4 pg mL −1 and 47.25 pg mL −1 , ≈10- and 2116- times lower than that of gold nanoparticles-LFA, respectively. The practicality of the MSUD-based LFA is validated in 83 urine/hair forensic samples, with the quantitative determination results in good agreement with the liquid chromatography-mass spectrometer data. This work presents an innovative strategy for constructing FCNPs, facilitating their progressive development and widespread applications.

Multilaminate metastructure for high-temperature radar-infrared bi-stealth: Topological optimization and near-room-temperature synthesis

Zhimin An,Yiping Li,Xiaoguang Luo,Yixing Huang,Rubing Zhang,Daining Fang

A multifunctional stealth technology compatible with infrared and radar is one of the most feasible ways to improve the survival of military equipment under high-temperature conditions. However, it is difficult to effectively integrate multiple functions into one material owing to the contradictory stealth mechanisms of infrared and radar. Herein, the near-room-temperature integrated preparation of a hierarchical metastructure with high-temperature resistance, broadband microwave absorption, and infrared stealth is realized by combining topological optimization of metastructure and a papermaking method. The tailored metastructure exhibits an effective bandwidth and absorption peak of 3.1 GHz and −25.9 dB at 1,000°C. The excellent thermal insulation allows the metastructure to achieve infrared stealth, which can reduce the radiation temperature of an object from 1,200°C to 340°C. The new technology paves the way for the design and preparation of a radar-infrared bi-stealth metastructure applied to high temperature.

Bi@PVP/PVA aerogels with 3D porous networks: High-performance trapping and immobilization of iodine vapor

Chunhui Wu,Qingwei Ping,Xueru Sheng,Na Li,Bing Wang,Jian Zhang

During the reprocessing of irradiated nuclear fuel, radioactive iodine vapor—a hazardous substance threatening environmental safety and human health—is released in substantial quantities, creating an urgent need for adsorbents with high-efficiency iodine trapping capabilities. This study synthesizes BiOBr aggregates via hydrothermal method and loads them onto a three-dimensional (3D) porous aerogel, which is composed of crosslinked polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) (denoted as Bi@PVP/PVA). Compared with Bi@PVP and Bi@PVA, Bi@PVP/PVA shows significantly enhanced iodine adsorption performance: Bi@PVP/PVA-3, featuring a well-developed 3D porous network with optimized pore structure, achieves an exceptional iodine trapping capacity of 2482.2 mg/g at 85 °C, outperforming the single-polymer-supported counterparts. Characterizations confirm that crosslinking between PVP and PVA constructs a macroporous framework, which not only provides abundant sites for uniform loading of BiOBr aggregates but also facilitates iodine diffusion. Kinetic model analysis reveals the dual adsorption mechanism: the PVP/PVA porous network enables rapid trapping of iodine vapor, while chemical reactions between BiOBr and iodine ensure its firm immobilization. This synergistic effect of the carrier’s porous structure and the loaded BiOBr endows Bi@PVP/PVA aerogels with superior iodine treatment efficiency, highlighting their practical value in iodine capture during nuclear fuel reprocessing.

Pt nanoparticles grown on Bi₃O₄Br nanosheets enhance the efficacy of ampicillin against infectious biofilms

Qiaolan Shi,Lu Yuan,Joop de Vries,Brandon W. Peterson,Jian Liu,Yijin Ren,Henny C. van der Mei

Due to the high resistance and complexity of biofilms, alternatives to traditional antibiotic treatments are urgently needed. Here, we investigated whether Pt nanoparticles grown on Bi 3 O 4 Br nanosheets (Pt NP /Bi 3 O 4 Br) can enhance the efficacy of the antibiotic ampicillin against biofilm-associated infections. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed abundant oxygen vacancies in the Bi 3 O 4 Br nanosheet creating an ideal surface for Pt nanoparticles growth. The obtained Pt NP /Bi 3 O 4 Br nanozyme had a uniform Pt nanoparticle distribution confirmed by X-ray powder diffraction and transmission electron microscopy with high-angle annular dark-field scanning. Compared to Bi 3 O 4 Br nanosheets alone, the nanozyme demonstrated significantly higher catalytic activity for reactive oxygen species generation facilitated by efficient electron transfer from Pt nanoparticles. When combined with ampicillin, Pt NP /Bi 3 O 4 Br nanozyme significantly enhanced bactericidal efficacy against both Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and Gram-negative Escherichia coli biofilms in vitro as shown by reduction in biofilm thickness and colony-forming units. In a murine skin infection model, the combination accelerated wound healing following S. aureus infection. Additionally, the combined treatment selectively reduced the pathogen Streptococcus mutans in human ex vivo oral biofilms while preserving the healthy human microbiome indicating potential applications in dental care. In conclusion, this work demonstrates that nanozyme-enhanced antibiotic therapy offers a promising strategy to combat biofilm-associated infections and antibiotic resistance.

Defect clusters and grain boundary induced giant dielectric response in (Nb+Bi) co-doped TiO2 ceramics

Dan Zhong,Zhiyong Liu,Qifang Ruan,Kun Guo,Bing Xie,Pu Mao,Haijun Sun

High dielectric loss and temperature-dependent dielectric constant are the main obstacles limiting the application of giant dielectric materials in microelectronic devices. Here, (Nb 0.5 Bi 0.5 ) x Ti 1- x O 2 (NBTO- x ) ceramics modified by defect cluster synergistic interfacial effects were designed to improve the dielectric properties, and the mechanism of the giant dielectric behavior was thoroughly investigated. The defect clusters formed by co-doping of Bi 3+ and Nb 5+ ions confined the free electrons to a limited range of jumps, leading to a significant increase in the dielectric constant and a decrease in the dielectric loss of the NBTO- x ceramics. Defect clusters aggregated near grain boundaries accumulated free electrons and carriers, which formed an interfacial effect with insulating grain boundaries, further reducing the dielectric loss. Thus, a high dielectric constant of 10 5 and a low loss of 0.04 at 1 kHz with a temperature stability of Δ ε′ / ε′ 25 °C ≤ ±15% (-55 °C to 105 °C) was obtained in the NBTO-0.5% ceramic. This study offers a new approach to the design of high-performing giant dielectrics with excellent potential for application in microelectronic devices.

Identifying a bi-molecular synergetic adsorption mechanism for catalytic transformation of ethanol/acetaldehyde into 1,3-butadiene

Xianquan Li,Jifeng Pang,Yujia Zhao,Lin Li,Wenguang Yu,Feifei Xu,Yang Su,Xiaofeng Yang,Wenhao Luo,Mingyuan Zheng

The catalytic synthesis of 1,3-butadiene (1,3-BD) from bio-based ethanol offers an alternative and sustainable process beyond petroleum. However, the intrinsic active sites and corresponding mechanism of 1,3-BD formation have not been fully elucidated yet. By correlating systematic characterization results with catalytic performance, the open Zr species, i.e., Zr(OH)(OSi) 3 moieties, were identified as the active site over the Zr/MFI-BM catalysts for the catalytic transformation of ethanol-acetaldehyde into 1,3-BD. In conjunction with controlled experiments and theory calculations, ethanol and acetaldehyde are proposed to synergistically co-adsorb on the Zr(OH)(OSi) 3 species in a bi-molecular mode, which assists the acetaldehyde condensation and accelerates the critical Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley-Oppenauer reduction, and accordingly promotes 1,3-BD formation. These findings will stimulate the search towards new metal-zeolite combinations for efficient production of value-added 1,3-BD via biomass-derived ethanol and beyond.
