Hydrogels have a wide range of applications in the fields of biomedicine, flexible electronics, and bionics. In this study, injectable and self-healable hydrogels were first prepared based on a dynamic covalent C═C bond formed via the Knoevenagel condensation reaction between poly(ethylene glycol) dicyanoacetate and water-soluble poly(vanillin acrylate). Three kinds of catalysts (phosphate buffer, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8, and tertiary amine) were used in Knoevenagel condensation for preparing hydrogels. All hydrogels in this study could be formed in situ, and their gelation time ranged from seconds to minutes. The properties and application of hydrogels could be customized according to the type of catalyst employed. 3-[4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) results indicated that all the components and hydrogels exhibited low toxicity, and the hydrogels could be used as 3D cell culture scaffolds. Because of the dynamic covalent C═C bond formed by Knoevenagel condensation, the resultant hydrogels were found to be dynamic and showed good self-healing properties. This work presents a new dynamic covalent chemistry for the preparation of self-healable materials.

Direct conversion of biomass to functional materials is an ideal solution to relieve challenges in environmental and energy sustainability. We herein demonstrate a molten salt thermoelectrolysis of rice husks (RHs) mainly consisting of organic mass and biosilica to achieve high-efficiency and upgraded utilization of both Si and C in RHs. By coupling pyrolysis of organic mass with electrochemical reduction of silica in molten salts, the thermoelectrolysis of RHs in molten CaCl 2 –NaCl at 800 °C refines the RHs and acid-leached RHs to SiC nanowire/C (SiC-NW/C) and Si nanoparticle/C (Si-NP/C), respectively. The present study highlights the molten salt thermoelectrolysis for reclamation of biomass wastes in an affordable and controllable manner.

The Fe2O3@C@MnO2@C (FCMC) nanocomposites containing spindle-like Fe2O3 as a core and MnO2 nanoflakes as a sandwiched shell and double carbon layers have been successfully prepared by a facile method. As anode materials of lithium ion batteries (LIBs), the cycling stability, rate performance, and conductivity of the prepared FCMC nanocomposites are far beyond those of the carbon-free Fe2O3@MnO2 (FM) nanocomposites. The hierarchical structure with double layers of carbon effectively enhances the ion conductivity and electrochemical performance of transitional metal oxides, indicating that carbon in FCMC played an important role during lithium ion storage. The initial discharge/charge capacity of the FCMC electrode reaches as high as 1240.2/1215.9 mAh g–1, and the discharge capacity is over 1000 mAh g–1 at 500 mA g–1 after 50 cycles. Additionally, the unique hierarchical structural characteristic with double layers of green carbon with a high degree of graphitization makes FCMC an excellent catalyst in removing methylene blue (MB) dye from solution with H2O2 under a slight heating with the degradation time as short as 10 min. Our work presents a new perspective on carbon modified multilayer core–shell oxide structure, which can be applied to many fields such as energy storage and catalyst.

The use of high-entropy oxides (HEOs) in heterogeneous catalysis is a fascinating research direction in the chemical field. In this work, a highly selective aerobic oxidative C–C bond cleavage using a 1,2-diol and lignin model is achieved with the HEOs-derived multimetallic catalyst. In the transformation of 1-phenyl-1,2-ethanediol, a 96.1% conversion with 96.2% selectivity of benzaldehyde was obtained using MgCuMnFeCo–R as the catalyst. Therein, the partial reduction of Fe2+ and Co2+ leading to the formation of numerous oxygen vacancies, plays a crucial role in the excellent catalytic activity. Moreover, this HEO-derived catalyst could maintain high activity even after being reused more than 10 times.

High production capacity of C 2 products from CO 2 photoreduction remains a significant challenge owing to the difficulty of C-C coupling and weak hydrogenation. Herein, a novel stepwise C-C coupling and hydrogenation mechanism is developed on multisite catalyst to enhance the performance of photocatalytic CO 2 reduction to C 2 products. The active Co cluster, carbon dots (CDs) and Cs 3 Bi 2 Br 9 quantum dots (QDs) are reinforced with robust carbon matrix, which allows to accelerate mass/electron transport and improve stability of catalytic sites, enabling a competitive C 2 H 4 evolution rate of 57.60 μmol g cat −1 h −1 with 67.70 % C 2 H 4 selectivity. In situ experiments coupled with theoretical calculations verify that Co and CDs capture photogenerated electrons from Cs 3 Bi 2 Br 9 to form key intermediate Co-*CO-*CO-CDs. After *CO-*CO coupling on Co site, the proximal CDs provide plenty of protons to conduct continuous hydrogenation toward coupling site until C 2 H 4 is formed. This study paves a novel pathway to regulate C-C coupling and hydrogenation for CO 2 conversion to C 2 hydrocarbons.

Hierarchical Y/SBA-15 meso-microporous composites (YS- x ) and corresponding highly dispersed catalysts (Ni/YS- x ) were prepared and applied to the production of jet fuel range hydrocarbons by the selective hydrogenation of oleic acid. Small particle size and electron-deficient Ni δ+ are detrimental to the C C bond activation of the η 1 (C)-acyl conformation and inhibit the decarbonylation/decarboxylation pathway. Besides, the activation ability of the C C bond is regulated to avoid excessive cleavage by the acidity and diffusion properties of the hierarchical Ni/YS- x catalysts, thus affecting their hydroisomerization and hydrocracking properties. The abundant acid sites are beneficial to the selective activation of the C O bond of the η 2 (C, O)-aldehyde conformation and the promotion of the reductive deoxygenation pathway. The optimal Ni/YS-1 shows the highest iso / n -alkane ratio ( i / n = 6.26) and superior jet fuel range hydrocarbons yield (48.8%, 340°C), which is a benefit from its outstanding acid–metal balance and worthy diffusion property.

The slow kinetics and poor structural stability prevent transition metal selenides from being widely used in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) and potassium-ion batteries (PIBs). Herein, the “flower-like” porous carbon anchored by Zn-Mn binary selenides (ZMS@FC) composites are fabricated by selenizing the modified hierarchically metal-organic frameworks. The 2D conductive hierarchically flakes’ abundant pore structure and multiple active sites shorten the ion diffusion length and promote conductivity, while the synergistic effect of the binary metals and intrinsic large pseudocapacitive contribution effectively improve capacity and rate performance. ZMS@FC composites exhibit impressive rate capability of 294.4 mA h g –1 at 10 A g –1 and excellent cyclic stability with 369.6 mA h g –1 specific capacity retention at 2 A g –1 after 1000 cycling in SIBs. It is noted that 156.9 mA h g –1 can be retained at 5 A g –1 and 227.0 mA h g –1 is remained after 500 cycles at 2 A g –1 in PIBs. The ex situ X-ray diffraction patterns and transmission electron microscopy pictures are used to confirm the conversion reaction processes of the Zn-Mn-Se. Designing high-performance energy storage materials may benefit greatly from the universal synthesis technology of bimetallic sulfide anodes for enhanced SIBs and PIBs.

Photocatalytic cleavage of lignin C–C bonds using graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) offers a sustainable route to aromatic monomers; however, its practical efficiency is critically constrained by the generation yield of superoxide radicals. Herein, we address this constraint through a simple yet effective design: replacing the edge amino groups of g-C 3 N 4 with benzene rings to construct a benzene–g-C 3 N 4 copolymer. DFT calculations suggest that the introduced benzene ring contributes an empty low-lying orbital that may serve as a temporary electron trap. This effect, together with in-situ XPS evidence for photo-induced charge redistribution, is consistent with the formation of an S-scheme charge transfer pathway and the observed suppression of picosecond-scale electron–hole recombination. The benzene ring is proposed to function as a π–π adsorption anchor, selectively binding the lignin C β carbocation in close proximity to the C–N = C sites where superoxide radicals are generated. This directed adsorption overcomes the mass-transfer limitation of superoxide radical typically encountered under chemisorption conditions, thereby enabling spontaneous and diffusion-free oxidation of the C β site. This benzene–g-C 3 N 4 copolymer exhibits a 134% higher reaction efficiency than g-C 3 N 4 in C–C bond photocleavage, while also demonstrating excellent cleavage performance on industrial lignin. Collectively, this work offers an effective approach to overcoming kinetic limitations in photocatalysis.

Lignin represents the most abundant source of aromatic compounds in nature, and its depolymerization holds great promise for yielding valuable aromatic products. Herein, we demonstrate the photocatalytic oxidative cleavage of β–1 bonds via the the Mars–van Krevelen (MvK) mechanism, and catalytic activity is achieved over lattice oxygen (OL)-rich WO3. A conversion of 99% is reached after reaction for 2 h under visible light, with the selectivity to benzaldehyde and benzoic acid reached 94%, surpassing the most reported catalytic systems. This photocatalytic performance stems from precise modulation of OL and oxygen vacancies (OV) sites in WO3, applicable to diverse β–1 model compounds and industrial lignin. In this MvK mechanism, the substrate adsorbs onto the OL sites, followed by activating the Cβ−H and inserting the lattice oxygen into the C–H bond to form a benzoin intermediate. Then, the desorbed benzoin undergoes a a Norrish Type I-like reaction, breaking the C–C bonds to form benzaldehyde. Concurrently, the adsorbed O2 at OV sites is reduced by photogenerated electrons, replenishing the depleted lattice oxygen and therefore manifesting stability (10 cycles). This in situ removal–regeneration strategy provides an approach for efficient lignin C−C bond cleavage and establishes the rational design principles for interfacial photocatalysts toward lignin valorization.

The precise control of product selectivity in the electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction (ECR) toward specific multi-carbon (C 2+ ) compounds remains a significant challenge. This work demonstrates that incorporating germanium (Ge) into copper (Cu) nanoparticles to form a solid solution effectively tunes the surface electronic states of Cu, thereby steering the C 2+ product distribution from ethylene toward ethanol. First-principles calculations predict that an optimal Ge content (Cu 94 Ge 6 ) optimizes the Cu 3d orbital hybridization and shifts the d-band center, strengthening the adsorption of the critical * CH 2 CHO intermediate and favoring its hydrogenation pathway. Experimentally, the Cu 94 Ge 6 catalyst exhibits an ethanol-to-ethylene ratio of ∼1.8, significantly higher than that of pure Cu (∼0.6). Comprehensive characterization, including in situ ATR-FTIR and quasi in situ XPS, reveals that the Ge-induced electronic modulation enhances the adsorption of COCHO/CH 2 CHO intermediates and promotes the presence of isolated interfacial water, which collectively facilitates ethanol formation. This study presents a viable strategy for regulating C 2+ product selectivity through solid-solution electronic engineering in Cu-based electrocatalysts.

Tumor-resident microbiota are identified as a critical modulator in the carcinogenesis and progression of cervical malignancies. However, the mechanisms linking these microbiota to cervical cancer remain poorly understood. In this study, we find that patients with cervical cancer exhibit increased microbiota diversity, characterized by eight distinct bacterial species that distinguish them from control subjects. Intratumoral or intravenous administration of an isolated strain, Gordonia polyisoprenivorans GP-2, derived from tumor-resident microbiota, significantly promotes the growth and metastasis of cervical cancer in mice. Further investigation reveals that GP-2 metabolizes host-derived choline to produce the bacterial metabolite lysophosphatidylcholine (lysoPC). We propose and validate the biosynthetic pathway for lysoPC in strain GP-2 and demonstrate that lysoPC activates the classical tumorigenic genes c-Jun / c-Fos using cervical tumor organoids derived from patients. These findings elucidate the mechanisms underlying microbiota-host crosstalk in cervical cancer and highlight a potential therapeutic target for intervening in tumor-resident bacteria.

Ultra-high-temperature ceramic-modified C/C composites are vital for hypersonic vehicles, but their repeated service capability is hindered by oxide-scale degradation during cyclic ablation. This study evaluates the reusability of C/C-ZrC-SiC composites via cyclic oxy-acetylene ablation tests. Three Y-modification configurations were investigated: coating-only, matrix-only, and dual-integration. Results indicate that the dual-modified composite exhibited optimal resistance after three 60 s ablation cycles at ∼2600°C, achieving a linear ablation rate of −0.015 μm/s and a mass ablation rate of −0.016 mg/s (a 108% improvement over the reference). Mechanistically, the YSi 2 -modified coating rapidly formed a viscous Y 2 Si 2 O 7 -containing oxide layer during the initial stage to seal surface defects. In subsequent cycles, YF 3 in the matrix continuously replenishes the damaged scale with Y-containing species, promoting the formation of stable Zr 0 . 82 Y 0 . 18 O 1 . 91 and suppressing the martensitic transformation of ZrO 2 . This internal-external synergistic self-healing mechanism substantially enhances the reusability and long-term reliability of aerospace thermal structural components.
