CO2 capture through the hydrophilic functionalized CNTs in boosting the separation efficiency from flue gas based on the hydrate method

Fang Wang,Jinchi Mu,Zhonghai Zhang,Jixin Dong,Jinyao Han,Ruiyang Zhang,Ying Zhou

CO 2 capture is one of the most straightforward ways for solving the greenhouse gas effects. Hydrate-based CO 2 capture from flue gas has been considered as an emerging green technology owing to its low energy consumption, cost-effectiveness, and environmental benefits. In this study, the hydrophilic functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (FMWCNTs) were modified and applied for CO 2 capture from flue gas by combining the dynamic experiments towards CO 2 hydrate formation and theoretical simulations. Firstly, the selective adsorption towards CO 2 in the simulated flue gas was greatly improved by regulating the hydrophilic functional groups, especially for COOH groups on the surface. Particularly, FMWCNTs induced a rapid accumulation of CO 2 , which largely shortened the hydrate nucleation time to 13 min, reducing by 59.4 % compared to the pristine THF system. This further promoted the formation of CO 2 hydrate crystals and enhanced the hydration rate and gas consumption. As a result, the CO 2 storage capacity achieved 6.48 mmol/(mol·H 2 O), with the highest separation efficiency of 76.3 %, which increased by 23.6 % and 22.7 % than that of SDS-based traditional accelerators. Particularly, the low concentration of 0.01 wt% FMWCNTs still achieved a high separation efficiency of 73.4 %, showing a great potential as kinetic accelerators with low dosage. The present study could provide novel insights into the development of modified carbon nanotubes as the kinetic accelerators for CO 2 capture.

Multifunctional composite phase change materials with CNTs/SiC-modified epoxy coating for synergistically enhanced solar energy storage and photothermal conversion

Meng Fu,Youchong Hu,Shuai Luo,Yuanyuan Li,Yaoqi Huang,Xiaomin Cheng

Developing multifunctional composite phase change materials (PCMs) featuring enhanced photothermal energy conversion and storage performance is of vital importance, yet traditional organic PCMs suffer from inherent drawbacks, including leakage and poor thermal conductivity throughout the phase change process. To solve this problem, a new PCM design is provided, where stearic acid (SA) was employed as a latent heat storage unit, and carbon foam (CF) was served as a supporting framework. In this design, CNTs/SiC composite nanoparticles were uniformly dispersed into epoxy resin (ER) to fabricate a photothermal conversion coating. The modified epoxy resin (MER) coating acted as a protective effect for the internal PCMs, effectively mitigating leakage during phase transitions. With the incorporation of 9 wt% CNTs/SiC, the prepared composite PCMs retained the high latent heat (143.5J⋅g −1 ) and excellent photothermal conversion efficiency (96.76 %). Furthermore, the latent heat of the material showed a minimal reduction of only 0.4 % following 200 thermal cycles. These results demonstrate the potential of composite PCMs for efficient solar energy harvesting and storage in thermal regulation systems.

SSM-FEP/CNTs Composite membranes with CNT-bridged network for durable oil-water separation in high-temperature and corrosive environments

Hui Zhu,Kaikai Chen,Hailiang Liu,Jian Zhao,Qinglin Huang,Changfa Xiao

The improper disposal of waste oil and industrial oil-water emulsions presents critical ecological and energy challenges, driving the development of robust separation technologies. This study introduces a stainless steel mesh-supported polyperfluorinated ethylene-propylene/carbon nanotube (SSM-FEP/CNTs) composite membrane fabricated via a one-step thermoplastic sintering method. The innovative design leverages CNTs to create a three-dimensional bridging network within the FEP matrix, enhancing mechanical stability, optimizing pore architecture (average pore size: 0.15–0.30 μm), and establishing tubular nanostructured channels for efficient oil transport. The membrane exhibits exceptional stability in harsh environments, with < 5 % performance degradation in pH 2–14, and high temperatures (up to 100°C) during the continuous filtration tests, validated by SEM, FTIR, and TGA analyses. The one-step sintering process ensures scalability and cost-effectiveness, with a maximum flux of 52 L·m⁻²·h⁻¹ for kerosene, surpassing conventional polymer membranes. By integrating mechanical robustness, chemical inertness, and structural and transport properties, this composite membrane addresses limitations of low flux, poor durability, and complex fabrication in traditional systems, offering a sustainable solution for industrial wastewater treatment, waste oil recovery (e.g., refineries, marine applications), and closed-loop resource management. Its ability to maintain ultrahigh efficiency and durability under challenging conditions positions it as a transformative technology for environmental remediation and sustainable manufacturing.

Nacre-mimetic PVA/MXene/CNTs films via covalent crosslinking: Synergistic mechanics, photothermal conversion, and radiative cooling for sustainable energy applications

Jinping Guo,Guangyu Zhu,Xi Lu,Yanxia Cao,Yanyu Yang,Jianfeng Wang,Wanjie Wang

Efficient utilization of clean solar thermal energy remains for addressing the global energy challenges. Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene exhibits exceptional thermal conductivity and mechanical strength, however, its incorporation into polymer composites is hindered by weak interfacial interactions and poor dispersion. This study presents a covalent engineering strategy to construct MXene/carbon nanotube (CNT) hybrid fillers through esterification crosslinking, where polyacrylic acid (PAA) bridges hydroxyl-rich polydopamine-coated CNTs and MXene nanosheets. The resulting polyvinyl alcohol/MXene/CNTs (PMC) composite films fabricated through solution casting exhibit a unique gradient deposition architecture. The optimized PMC-10 film has excellent mechanical properties with a tensile strength of 216 MPa and a Young's modulus of 3.07 GPa, which are 2.8 and 5.1 times higher than those of the original PVA, respectively. Meanwhile, the composite simultaneously exhibits dual-mode thermal regulation capabilities: daytime photothermal heating enhancement of 45.43 °C and nighttime radiative cooling reduction of 7.47 °C. This diurnal thermal gradient enables continuous 24-h thermoelectric generation. Furthermore, the PMC films display rapid ice-melting capabilities, efficient heat dissipation, and improved flame retardancy. This work establishes a paradigm for designing 1D/2D covalent hybrid fillers in polymer composites that simultaneously enhance mechanical properties and multifunctional performance, significantly expanding their potential for sustainable energy applications.

Synergistic Enhancement of PLA Nanocomposites via Functionalized CNTs and MOFs: Multifunctional Improvements in Mechanical Strength, Thermal Stability, and Biomedical Compatibility

Lei Huang,Xin Ling,Linhui Huang,Feng Wei,Santosh K Tiwari,Xinyu Chen,Fei Ma,Fangdi Huang,Nannan Wang,Yanqiu Zhu,Dahai Yu

In pursuit of a sustainable alternative to conventional petroleum-derived polymers, this study aims to enhance the comprehensive performance of polylactic acid (PLA). Despite its inherent biocompatibility and biodegradability, the intrinsic brittleness of PLA significantly restricts its broader applicability, particularly in the medical domain. To overcome this limitation, we utilized the Hummers method to functionalize the surface of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with carboxylic acid groups, followed by a green and highly efficient solution-mixing approach to immobilize the modified CNTs onto the surface of HKUST-1, a metal-organic framework (MOF). The resulting inorganic-organic nanocomposite, denoted as CNTₘ/HKUST-1, was uniformly integrated into a PLA matrix via a mechanical hot-pressing technique, yielding the CNTₘ/MOF-PLA composite. This composite exhibited remarkable enhancements in mechanical properties, including tensile strength, modulus, and fracture toughness, alongside improved thermal stability. Furthermore, it demonstrated exceptional antibacterial efficacy against *Staphylococcus aureus* and Escherichia coli, coupled with outstanding biocompatibility and minimal cytotoxicity. The green synthesis strategy employed herein positions the CNTₘ/MOF-PLA composite as a highly promising material for applications in tissue engineering and advanced biomedical devices.

N-doped FeCoNi/MoS2@cnts/cnfs aerogels with magnetic-dielectric synergy for heat insulation, infrared stealth, and electromagnetic wave absorption

Haotian Jiang,Yanxiang Wang,Chengjuan Wang,Yingfan Li,Shichao Dai,Bohan Ding,Jinghe Guo,Yanru Yuan,Dongming Liu,Hui Li

To develop multi-functional microwave-absorbing materials, the FeCoNi/MoS 2 @carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/carbon nanofibers (CNFs) aerogels were synthesized by anchoring FeCoNi and MoS 2 onto an aerogel skeleton via directional freeze-drying and catalytic chemical vapor deposition (CCVD). Through CCVD, a diverse array of heterointerfaces was successfully constructed and defect-containing CNTs were introduced, thereby improving the impedance mismatch of carbon-based aerogels while achieving outstanding microwave absorption performance. The composite aerogel results in a minimum reflection loss of −84.18 dB at the thickness of 1.85 mm and an effective absorption bandwidth of 5.40 GHz at the thickness of 1.75 mm with a 13 % filler ratio. The excellent electromagnetic wave absorbing ability is mainly ascribed to the formation of three-dimensional conduction network, abundant heterogeneous interfaces, and the introduction of magnetic loss. Density functional theory calculations further elucidate that the enhanced dielectric properties arise from asymmetric charge distribution at heterogeneous interfaces (FeCoNi–C and MoS 2 –C), which amplifies interfacial polarization, while the increased density of states optimizes conduction loss. Additionally, the composite aerogels exhibit exceptional thermal insulation and infrared stealth performance. This work pioneers a novel pathway method for multifunctional aerogels using CCVD.

Interfacial Engineering on Cathode and Anode with Iminated Polyaniline@rGO-CNTs for Robust and High-Rate Full Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Meng Li,Hao Chen,Can Guo,Shangshu Qian,Hongpeng Li,Zhenzhen Wu,Chao Xing,Pan Xue,Shanqing Zhang

Lithium–sulfur batteries (LSBs) currently suffer from severe polysulfide shuttling, slow redox kinetics at the sulfur cathode, and irreversible dendrite growth at the lithium anode. To address these issues, a dual interfacial engineering strategy on both the cathode and anode is proposed. For the cathode, iminated polyaniline (iPANI) is used to achieve energetic engineering to induce mid-energy level to the adsorption of polysulfides, and catalyze the redox conversion of sulfur species, and realize morphological engineering via self-assembly of iPANI onto a scaffold integrated by reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs), namely iPANI@rGO-CNTs. For the anode, the highly conductive and lithiophilic nature and porous nanostructure of the iPANI@rGO-CNTs composite facilitates the uniform deposition of lithium-ions, significantly preventing the growth of lithium dendrites. Density functional theory calculations suggest that the iminated functional group at the excited state in iPANI can significantly suppress the shuttling effect, catalyze the conversion of sulfur species, and enhance the conversion of the sulfur species on the sulfur cathode. With the synergic effects of the iPANI@rGO-CNTs nanoreactors, the as-prepared LSBs deliver an excellent rate capability and outstanding cycling life. This large-scale production and application of the iPANI@rGO-CNTs nanocomposite may lead to the eventual commercialization of LSBs.

Jiahui Zhu,Lei Cheng,Siyuan Zhang,Di Lan,Guangrong Wu,Zhenguo Gao,Zirui Jia

The electromagnetic wave absorber can absorb and lose electromagnetic waves (EMW) to the greatest extent, through the coordination between the composite components and the rational design of the structure. In this study, a series of multi-component porous composites were prepared by one-pot hydrothermal synthesis and high-temperature calcination catalysis. Under the condition that dicyandiamide provides a carbon source and a nitrogen source, magnetic nanoparticles catalyze the growth of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Benefiting from the synergistic effect of dielectric loss and magnetic loss, this composite material demonstrated excellent electromagnetic wave absorption performance. Notably, Ni/CrN/VN/CNTs achieve a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −52.53 dB at a thickness of 2.4 mm and a maximum effective absorption bandwidth (EAB max ) of 7.3 GHz at a thickness of 2.0 mm. Additionally, electrochemical analysis tests have confirmed its excellent corrosion resistance, further enhanced its overall appeal and expanded its potential applications across various fields.

cStudy on NH3-SCR performance of CoMnFeAl-LDO derived from layered double hydroxides supported on CNTs/TiO2NWs and its mechanism

Zhenzhen Guan,Yuanbin Xia,Dongchen Hang,Gan Chen,Mengyan Zhang,Zhihai Cheng,Xinxia Ma,Jiang Wu

In this study, a series of CoMnFeAl-layered double oxide (LDO) catalysts supported on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)/titanium dioxide nanowires (TiO 2 NWs) were synthesized via the hydrothermal method. The catalytic performance of the synthesized catalysts was evaluated by the activity tests, and the characterizations and morphologies were measured by using X‐ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia (NH 3 -TPD), temperature-programmed desorption of sulfur dioxide (SO 2 -TPD), temperature-programmed reduction of hydrogen (H 2 -TPR), and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (in situ DRIFTS). The results demonstrated that both CoMnFeAl-LDO/CNT and CoMnFeAl-LDO/TiO 2 NW catalysts achieved 100 % NO x conversion within their optimal temperature ranges and exhibited excellent sulfur resistance. Morphological studies revealed that the introduction of CNTs or TiO 2 NWs effectively mitigated the aggregation and stacking of LDHs during calcination, resulting in enhanced dispersion of active components. Moreover, these modifications increased surface acidity, redox capability, and SO 2 tolerance of the CoMnFeAl-LDO catalyst. The in situ DRIFTS results indicated that the SCR reactions over CoMnFeAl-LDO/CNT and CoMnFeAl-LDO/TiO 2 NW followed both the Eley-Rideal (E-R) and Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) mechanisms. This study highlighted the potential of CNTs/TiO 2 NWs to modify CoMnFeAl-LDO catalysts, offering insights for the design of efficient and sulfur-resistant catalysts to address stringent environmental regulations.

A robust underwater superoleophobic aminated polyacrylonitrile membrane embedded with CNTs-COOH for durable oil/water and dyes/oil emulsions separation

Liyun Zhang,Yi He,Pingya Luo,Lan Ma,Shuangshuang Li,Yiling Nie,Jing Yu,Xiao Guo

Considering the emulsified oil and water-soluble dyes in wastewater, the exploitation of easy-manufacturing, energy-saving and high-efficiency separation materials is urgently required. In this work, integrating the positively charged polyethyleneimine (PEI) with negatively charged CNTs-COOH constructed the superhydrophilic Cassie–Baxter structure onto the electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN) membrane surface by ultrasonic, electrostatic interaction and thermal treatment. Based on it, the PEN@CNTs membrane achieved efficient separation for surfactant-free, tween 80-stabilized, SDS-stabilized, and CTAB-stabilized emulsions (the fluxes reached 508–3158 L m −2 h −1 , the separation efficiency reached 99.42%) by the splendid water-penetration and oil-repellency, electrostatic interaction, and “aperture sieve”. Moreover, because of the porosity and strong charged surface of PEN@CNTs membrane, the anionic dyes can be quickly removed by one-step filtrate method (∼403 L m −2 h −1 ). Meanwhile, the PEN@CNTs membrane also achieved synchronous and efficient remediation for oil/dye mixture emulsions after many cycles. More importantly, facing the complex physical and chemical environments, the combination of the stabilized PEN membrane, inactive CNTs-COOH layer, and the bond of embedding method between CNTs-COOH and PEN nanofibers made the PEN@CNTs membrane demonstrated robust stability and durable separation capability.

Hierarchical structure of 1D spiky-like CoN-CNTs@PANI nanotubes supported on 2D Ti3C2Tx nanosheets for high-performance zinc-ion capacitors

Wenling Wu,Haiqiang Wang,Puze Wang,Yang Cheng,Yuan Fang,Jiang Guo,Ting Zhao,Jianfeng Zhu

Two-dimensional (2D) layered MXene (e.g., Ti 3 C 2 T x ) is a research focus for zinc-ion capacitors (ZICs) electrodes due to its large specific surface area and high conductivity. However, its practical use is constrained by two critical bottlenecks: low theoretical capacitance and severe interlayer stacking, which directly reduce Zn 2+ transport efficiency and electroactive site accessibility. Constructing hierarchical structures addresses this by providing efficient Zn 2+ diffusion pathways, abundant electroactive sites, and excellent structural stability. This work prepared a 1D/2D hierarchical CoN-CNTs@PANI/Ti 3 C 2 T x composite via in-situ polymerization and electrostatic self-assembly. First, 1D CoN-CNTs provide polyaniline (PANI) polymerization sites to suppress its volume expansion and to form conductive channels, while spiky PANI shells offer extra faradaic sites. Second, 1D CoN- CNTs@PANI nanotubes prevent the restacking of 2D Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets, and the conductive framework of 2D Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets further suppresses PANI volume change to enhance rate capability and cycling lifespan. Third, the 1D/2D structure leverages synergies to accelerate interfacial charge/ion transport and reaction kinetics, critical for high-power ZICs. As a result, the three-electrode tests showed the electrode delivered 861.7 F g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 and retained 91 % capacitance after 5000 cycles at 10 A g −1 . The assembled CoN-CNTs@PANI/Ti 3 C 2 T x //Zn ZIC achieved 91.2 Wh kg −1 at 1600 W kg −1 , with 86 % capacity retention after 5000 cycles at 2 A g −1 . This work establishes an advanced MXene-based hierarchical design strategy for high-performance ZIC electrodes.

Robust stability of CH4 cracking to CNTs and H2 over hydrotalcite-derived NiCuCrAl catalyst dependent on element induced Ni metal size

Mengjie Cao,Shuangde Li,Shikun Wang,Xin Zhou,Guangxin Ma,Yunfa Chen

Catalytic decomposition of CH 4 is expected to yield pure hydrogen and carbon, which is important for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Nickel-based catalyst are currently the most common catalyst for methane cracking but sintering and carbon accumulation can cause catalyst deactivation. Therefore, stabilizing the particle size of nickel-based catalysts by enhancing the metal-support interaction is crucial for designing methane cracking catalysts. In this study, the effect of added Cr and Cu on the performance of NiAl catalyst was studied. The results indicated that the co-doping of Cu and Cr improved the metal-support interaction and promoted the formation of oxygen vacancies. Cu doped NiAl catalyst increased the Ni–Ni bond length and decreased the coordination of Ni–Ni by alloying with Ni. This effectively stabilized the catalyst size during the CH 4 cracking reaction. It was showed that the smaller the variation in particle size of the catalyst during the reaction, the higher the stability of methane decomposition. The Ni 2.4 Cu 0.3 Cr 0.3 Al catalysts retained 60 % hydrogen yield for up to 630 min at 600 °C. By coupling “hydrogen preparation” and “carbon production”, this paper is expected to open up a new path for the integration of clean energy production and advanced carbon materials manufacturing in a resource-efficient and environmentally friendly way.
