This study designed a composite material with internal synergistic effects among multiple components to achieve highly selective adsorption of Cu (II). Through controlled synthesis, the Fe 3 O 4 /MnO 2 (3 1 0)/ZIF-67 composite was successfully fabricated, leading to significant improvement in adsorption selectivity , capacity, and adsorption rate. The experimental results showed that the composite is of outstanding selectivity in the adsorption of Cu (II), with a partition coefficient K of Cu (II) that was 2.2–5.3 times higher than that of other coexisting ions. Moreover, the composite exhibited a remarkable adsorption capacity of 1261.0 mg g −1 and a fast adsorption rate of 840.7 mg g −1 h −1 at 298 K. Additionally, its magnetic property facilitated easy separation from wastewater, thereby enhancing its potential for commercial applications. The synergetic effect mechanism was analyzed through characterizations and DFT calculations. Furthermore, the recyclability of the composite was investigated, which showed that after seven cycles, the adsorption efficiency remained at 85% of its initial efficiency. It can be concluded that Fe 3 O 4 /MnO 2 (3 1 0)/ZIF-67 has potential to address challenges posed by heavy metal pollution in copperplating effluents.

Achieving the integration of detection and removal for Cu(II) and Cr(VI). • Cr(VI) is captured by amino groups of MDS and partially reduced to Cr(III). • Pyridine and amino of aerogel provided coordination sites to capture Cu(II). • Biocompatible aerogel has low cytotoxicity for L929 cells. • Detection and removal have no obvious effect on the quality of apple juice. Heavy metal pollution in food, particularly Cu(II) and Cr(VI), poses a significant threat to human health. A bifunctional composite aerogel (MDS) is successfully synthesized, immobilizing a 5,5′-diamino-2,2′-bipyridine (dabpy) post-modified MOF-808 within a sodium alginate (SA) aerogel for sensitive detection and efficient removal of heavy metal ions in apple juice. Mechanism studies reveal that pyridinic N and NH 2 in MDS display a high affinity for Cu(II), while Cr(VI) exhibits an electrostatic attraction to the protonated NH 2 . The interaction process triggers electron transfer, which leads to fluorescence quenching. MDS aerogel shows detection of Cu(II) and Cr(VI) with low limits of detection, and adsorption capacities of 354.91 mg/g for Cu(II) and 258.62 mg/g for Cr(VI). The MDS aerogel removal efficiency exceeded 94% in apple juice. In vitro cytotoxicity assays indicate low cytotoxicity of MDS. This work offers a potential bifunctional platform for heavy-metal sensing and removal in food matrices. Download: Download high-res image (135KB) Download: Download full-size image

The extensive use of copper leads to the generation of a large amount of copper-containing wastewater, which poses a serious threat to both biological health and the environment. Therefore, recovery and reutilization of Cu from wastewater is of great practical significance for humans. In this study, the novel hierarchically ion-imprinted microsphere (H-Cu-IIP) and surface ion-imprinted microsphere (Cu-IIP) were successfully prepared from alginate/silica composite materials for the selective recovery of Cu(II). Both synthesized materials were characterized using various techniques including FT-IR, SEM, BET, TGA, and XPS, and their adsorption properties for Cu(II) were evaluated in terms of pH, adsorption kinetics, adsorption isotherm, selective adsorption, and stability. The results showed that H-Cu-IIP and Cu-IIP achieved excellent equilibrium adsorption capacities of 390.6 mg/g and 358.4 mg/g, respectively, with high selectivity and good stability, and could effectively remove Cu(II) even in actual water environments. The Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order equation can well describe adsorption isotherms and kinetics, respectively. In addition, the catalysts derived from the Cu(II)-loaded adsorbents through simple calcination exhibits excellent catalytic efficiency for photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 . These findings suggest that the proposed method is a promising approach for the selective recovery and reuse of Cu(II) from wastewater, aligning with the principles of green and sustainable practices.

Although Cu(II) can trigger peroxymonosulfate (PMS) oxidation of pollutants, it is only effective under alkaline environments and is susceptible to interference by aqueous matrix components. In this study, cysteine, a natural thiol and amino acid, was found to greatly improve the performance of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) elimination in the Cu(II)/PMS system across a broad pH range of 4.0–12.0. The cysteine/Cu(II)/PMS system achieved a 94.34 % elimination of TBBPA within 10 min at pH 7.0, which had a 7.55-fold increase in efficiency relative to the Cu(II)/PMS system, and superior to the previously-reported hydroxylamine and gallic acid-enhanced Cu(II)/PMS systems. Cu(III)-(cysteine) 2 , as opposed to radicals, was the main reactive species leading to the removal of TBBPA, contributing at least 91.53 %. Cysteine first coordinated with Cu(II) through sulfhydryl groups (−SH) and rapidly converted Cu(II)-(cysteine) 2 to Cu(I)-(cysteine) 2 , then Cu(III)-(cysteine) 2 was formed finally by the further oxidation of PMS on Cu(I)-(cysteine) 2 . This enhancement was further extended to other thiols including cysteamine, β-mercaptoethanol and mercaptosuccinic acid. Four potential degradation pathways of TBBPA were inferred from the determined nine degradation intermediates. A marked decline in the toxicity of the reaction solutions was observed after the elimination of TBBPA. Furthermore, the cysteine/Cu(II)/PMS system shown high anti-interference performance with common cations and anions (Ca(II), Mg(II), NO 3 – , SO 4 2– , HCO 3 – and Cl – ), humic acid and actual water samples. Overall, this study provided a promising approach to extend the working pH range of Cu(II)/PMS system and its anti-interference capability with actual water matrix, which was favorable for its potential utilization in water treatment.

The reduced graphene oxide (RGO) and Chitosan (CS) hybrid matrix RGO-CS were coated onto the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) surface, then, poly- l -lysine films (PLL) were prepared by electropolymerization with cyclic voltammetry (CV) method to prepare RGO-CS/PLL modified glassy carbon electrode (RGO-CS/PLL/GCE) for the simultaneous electrochemical determination of heavy metal ions Cd(II), Pb(II) and Cu(II). Combining the advantageous features of RGO and CS, RGO and CS are used together because the positively charged CS can interact with the negatively changed RGO to prevent their aggregation. Furthermore, CS has many amino groups along its macromolecular chains and possessed strongly reactive with metal ions. Moreover, PLL modified electrodes have good stability, excellent permselectivity, more active sites and strong adherence to electrode surface, which enhanced electrocatalytic activity . The RGO-CS/PLL/GCE was characterized voltammetrically using redox couples (Fe(CN) 6 3−/4− ), complemented with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV) has been used for the detection of Cd(II), Pb(II) and Cu(II). The detection limit of RGO-CS/PLL/GCE toward Cd(II), Pb(II) and Cu(II) is 0.01 μg L −1 , 0.02 μg L −1 and 0.02 μg L −1 , respectively. The electrochemical parameters that exert influence on deposition and stripping of metal ions, such as supporting electrolytes , pH value, deposition potential, and deposition time, were carefully studied.

A novel polyethylenimine/polyacrylonitrile blend membrane (PEI/PAN) was synthesized via crosslinking technology for removing multiple kinds of heavy metals and endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) from aqueous solution including Cu(II), Cr(VI), bisphenol S (BPS), and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) in batch mode. Several characterization techniques were applied to identify the morphological and physicochemical characteristics of the synthesized PEI/PAN. The results show that the maximum adsorption capacities of Cu(II), Cr(VI), BPS, and 2,4-D reach up to 97.6, 136, 318, and 1303 mg/g at pH of 2.50, 4.89, 4.95 and 2.84, respectively, whereas the presence of salinity in the solution has affected the adsorption process. Moreover, the uptake of Cu(II) is more in line with Elovich kinetic model, and the kinetic processes for Cr(VI), BPS and 2,4-D can be described by the pseudo-first-order model. Freundlich model is more suitable for describing the adsorption isotherm behavior of PEI/PAN toward Cu(II) and Cr(VI), and Koble-Corrigan model can describe the adsorptive equilibrium processes for BPS and 2,4-D. Thermodynamic parameters are speculated that these adsorption processes are spontaneous and entropy-increasing, with endothermic processes for elimination of Cu(II), Cr(VI), and 2,4-D, while that of BPS is exothermic. PEI/PAN has possessed good reusability after five reuse cycles and has antibacterial property against gram-positive S. aureus . These adsorption processes may mainly occur due to the complexation for Cu(II), electrostatic force for Cr(VI), hydrogen bonding for BPS, as well as electrostatic attraction and hydrogen bonding for 2,4-D. Therefore, PEI/PAN membrane exhibits great potential to purify the wastewater polluted with heavy metals and EDCs.
