Phospholipid/protein co-mediated assembly of Cu2O nanoparticles for specific inhibition of growth and biofilm formation of pathogenic fungi

Peng Liping,Wei Henan,Tian Lei,Xu Jiachun,Li Mingchun,Yu Qilin

As the increasing number of the individuals suffering from AIDs, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, pathogenic fungi, which may rapidly grow and invade the host tissues in these immune-compromised patients, is becoming great threat to human health. In this study, we constructed a novel fungal pathogen-responsive assembly of cuprous oxide (Cu 2 O) nanoparticles (NPs) for specific targeting and inhibiting growth and biofilm formation of the representative fungal pathogen, Candida albicans ( C. albicans ). This assembly was formed by coating the initial Cu 2 O NPs with both phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) and bovine serum albumin (BSA), followed by hydrophobic/electrostatic interaction-driven formation of the Cu 2 O-PE-BSA microaggregates. The formed microaggregates could be induced for disassembly by the fungal pathogen C. albicans , leading to close binding of the NPs to the cell wall of the pathogen. Both confocal microscopy and viability assays showed that the assembly strongly inhibited growth and biofilm formation of the pathogen, but had extreme low toxicity to mammalian cells. In vivo mouse wound model further revealed that the assembly had high capacity of healing the fungus-infected wounds and reduced the fungal burden of the wound tissues. This study sheds a novel light on facile development of pathogen-responsive nano-assemblies for efficient and safe antifungal therapy.

Coordination modulation of iodide at the CuI-Cu2O interface to stabilize Cu+ and promote carbon dioxide-to-ethylene conversion

Haoran You,Mingkun Wu,Bihui An,Chenhao Zhang,Mengkui Tian

Electrochemical conversion of CO 2 to value-added chemicals is a promising carbon recycling strategy for mitigating CO 2 emissions from fossil fuels and addressing associated environmental challenges. In copper-based catalysts, Cu + species promote the reduction of CO 2 to multi‑carbon products, such as ethylene (C 2 H 4 ). However, under typical electroreduction, Cu + is prone to reduction to Cu 0 , leading to degradation of catalytic performance and poor stability. Herein, we present an interfacial engineering strategy to design a CuI-Cu 2 O composite catalyst with densely packed Cu 2 O nanoparticles on tetrahedral CuI substrates and self-stabilizing Cu + ability for selective CO 2 electroreduction to C 2 H 4 . Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and spectroscopic characterizations demonstrated that the CuI-Cu 2 O catalyst combined the efficient generation of *CO intermediates by Cu 2 O with the efficient C C coupling functionality of CuI, and the iodide ions within the catalyst autonomously modulated the copper oxidation state to stabilize Cu + , collectively enhancing CO 2 -to-C 2 H 4 selectivity. Consequently, the CuI-Cu 2 O catalyst achieved a C 2 H 4 Faradaic efficiency of 62.98 ± 1.05% along with a high current density of 275.16 mA·cm −2 at −0.97 V vs. the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). In the stability test, the CuI-Cu 2 O catalyst operated stably for over 16 h at a current density of approximately 279.95 mA·cm −2 . This study provides a catalyst design strategy that simultaneously enhances *CO supply and C C coupling while autonomously modulating the active Cu + state, offering an effective approach for achieving stable and highly selective CO 2 -to-C 2 H 4 conversion.

An ultra-sensitive flexible room-temperature H2S sensor enabled by PANI/MXene/Cu2O ternary nanocomposites for meat spoilage monitoring

Xingyu Chen,Lulu Xu,Shuai Liu,Yijun Liu,Yuehui Hou,Linxiang Liu,Ling Wang,Junfeng Wu,Hao Zhang

Flexible PANI/Ti 3 C 2 T x /Cu 2 O H 2 S sensor achieves 0.456 ppb LOD, 24.72% ppm −1 sensitivity, and 55/35 s response-recovery at RT. • Enhanced sensing arises from synergistic charge transport, heterojunction amplification, and reduction of PANI. • A portable wireless system enables real-time H 2 S monitoring during shrimp spoilage for food safety warning. Hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S), a highly toxic gas released during meat spoilage, necessitates room-temperature real-time detection for accurate freshness assessment and potential health hazards mitigation. In this work, an ultra-sensitive flexible H 2 S sensor was developed by depositing a polyaniline/MXene/cuprous oxide (PANI/MXene/Cu 2 O) ternary nanocomposite onto a flexible substrate, and it operates reliably at room temperature. The sensing material was synthesized via in-situ polymerization of PANI on titanium carbide (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) MXene, followed by the strategic integration of Cu 2 O microparticles to construct a hierarchical heterostructure. The sensor exhibits a high response sensitivity of 24.72% ppm −1 , a low theoretical detection limit of 0.456 ppb, and fast response/recovery times of 55 s and 35 s. It also delivers good selectivity, repeatability, long-term stability, and mechanical flexibility. A signal acquisition circuit integrating an OPA333 precision amplifier and a microcontroller was assembled for real-time quantitative detection of H 2 S release during shrimp spoilage, enabling effective tracking of H 2 S accumulation and discrimination of freshness stages. The enhanced gas-sensing performance stems from the synergistic combination of the highly conductive Ti 3 C 2 T x network, the p-p heterojunction between PANI and Cu 2 O, and the reduction reaction of PANI with H 2 S, which facilitates rapid charge transport and effectively modulates the interfacial energy band alignment upon H 2 S exposure. This study provides an effective strategy for designing high-performance room-temperature flexible gas sensors for real-time meat freshness assessment. Synthesis of TiO2/Cu2O heterojunction material based on SiO2 nanospheres and its application in anti-oxidation and antibacterial coatings

Xiaojiao Yu,Yi Wang,Long Li,Jin Wang,Dun Zhang

To enhance the bactericidal efficacy of TiO 2 /Cu 2 O composite coatings and mitigate the issue of ongoing oxidation, we introduced different sizes of spherical silica as supporting materials, combined with TiO 2 /Cu 2 O, to develop a novel antibacterial, antioxidant photocatalytic system. The synthesized ST and STC samples underwent comprehensive characterization using transmission electron microscopy. Subsequent analyses employing X-ray diffraction and UV–Vis diffuse reflectance systematically validated the preserved structural integrity and enhanced photochemical stability of the developed materials. The introduction of silica spheres not only significantly increased the specific surface areas of TiO 2 and Cu 2 O, thereby enhancing their interfacial contact, but also promoted efficient charge separation of photogenerated electrons and holes. Furthermore, this approach reduced the required amount of TiO 2 and Cu 2 O, leading to cost savings. These advantages make the developed coating highly suitable for industrial-scale sterilization applications.

Facile synthesis of nanocellulose-based Cu2O/Ag heterostructure as a surface-enhanced Raman scattering substrate for trace dye detection

Yinglin Luo,Lida Xing,Chuanshuang Hu,Weiwei Zhang,Xiuyi Lin,Jin Gu

Semiconductor metal-oxide/metal heterostructures with synergetic properties have potential applications in photocatalysis and optical sensors. Here, Cu 2 O sub-micro cubes were synthesized under environmentally benign conditions using 2, 2, 6, 6-tetramethylpyperdine-1-oxyl (TEMPO)-oxidized cellulose nanofibrils as a reducing and stabilizing agent. Then the surface of the Cu 2 O cubes was decorated with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) by a substitution reaction. The Cu 2 O/Ag heterostructures within the cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) network were employed as a promising surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) assay for efficient sensing of methylene blue (MB), reaching a maximum enhancement factor (EF) of 4.0 × 10 4 . Their SERS intensities depended on the coverage density of AgNPs and the wavelength of the excitation laser. The excellent SERS performance may result from the charge transfer between Ag and Cu 2 O molecules and the strong electromagnetic field at the interface. The CNF-Cu 2 O/Ag substrates were capable of detecting MB dye down to 10 −8  M level with a relative standard deviation of 10–15%, demonstrating great sensitivity and reproducibility.

Lattice oxygen-stabilized Au/Cu2O heterostructures for recyclable SERS detection and simultaneous monitoring of multiple pollutants in Lake water

Bence Gao,Dongxu Zhang,Wenjun Jiang,Anxin Jiao,Teng Li,Xiaoning Wang,Chuanzhao Li,Yong Liu,Ming Chen,Xiaoguang Ma

A recyclable Au/Cu 2 O SERS platform with lattice oxygen stabilization was prepared. • Au/Cu 2 O achieves ultra-low LODs (10 −12 –10 −13  M) for CV, MB and R6G in lake water. • The heterostructures enable the simultaneous detection of mixed organic pollutants in lake water. • Cyclic reuse enabled by photocatalytic degradation, retaining ∼89% SERS activity over four cycles. The increasing presence of organic pollutants in aquatic environments poses significant risks, and their detection and removal at trace levels in complex water systems remain challenging due to matrix interference. Herein, Au nanoparticle-decorated octahedral Cu 2 O heterostructures were fabricated via an in-situ reduction strategy as a recyclable SERS platform. The heterostructures enable ultrasensitive detection of crystal violet (CV), methylene blue (MB), and rhodamine 6G (R6G) in lake water, with detection limits of 10 −12 –10 −13  M and a maximum enhancement factor of 3.82 × 10 11 . The SERS platform exhibits good reproducibility, stability, and anti-interference capability, and allows simultaneous detection of mixed pollutants. In addition, the Cu 2 O component provides photocatalytic activity for pollutant degradation, enabling partial recovery of SERS performance over multiple cycles, with ∼89% activity retained after four cycles. Therefore, it is believed that the developed recyclable Au/Cu 2 O SERS platform holds great potential for ultrasensitive and reusable monitoring of organic pollutants in complex aqueous environments. Synergistic catalysis at Cu0–Cu+ interfaces in a MOF-derived Cu@Cu2O/NC heterostructure for enhanced 4-nitrophenol conversion

Yanping Dong,Xiqiang Tian,Jinhui An,Pengyu Xu,Xinrui Wei,Muhammad Zahid

Achieving high activity, superior selectivity, and durable performance remains challenging for pristine MOFs in heterogeneous hydrogenation catalysis. Herein, nitrogen-doped carbon-wrapped Cu@Cu 2 O/NC heterogeneous catalysts enriched with Cu 0 –Cu + interfacial sites were readily derived by calcining Cu-MOF under an air atmosphere. Comprehensive characterization was conducted to examine synthesis-induced variations in bulk crystallinity, surface chemistry, and catalytic activity for Cu-MOF-250, Cu-MOF-350, and Cu-MOF-450. Compared to its counterparts, the Cu-MOF-350 catalyst exhibited optimal performance in the preferential hydrogenation of noxious 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) to valued 4-aminophenol (4-AP), maintaining high activity for up to ten consecutive rounds. The enhanced catalytic hydrogenation efficiency of the Cu-MOF-350 catalyst is ascribed to its distinctive nanostructural features, which originate from the synergistic interplay between Cu and Cu 2 O species. In addition, the improved uniform distribution of Cu@Cu 2 O nanoparticles generates higher concentration of interfacial exposed reactive Cu 0 /Cu + sites on the Cu-MOF-350 surface, which are considered crucial for the promoted hydrogenation of 4-NP.

A Novel Sensor Based on Cu2O/Mo2C@C Derived from MOF Composites for Simultaneous Detection of Catechol and Hydroquinone

Qi Wang,Jinjin Zhang,Wenjing Liu,Jianying Qu

Herein, the copper-based metal organic framework (CuBDC) modified with MoO3 nanorods uniformly distributed on its surface (MoO3@CuBDC) was synthesized by a one-step solvothermal method, and then was treated with high temperature calcination. A series of characterizations demonstrate that MoO3@CuBDC was transformed into a ternary composite of Cu2O nanospheres, Mo2C, and carbon material (Cu2O/Mo2C@C) after the treatment. Moreover, a novel electrochemical sensor based on Cu2O/Mo2C@C modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was constructed for simultaneous sensitive detection of catechol (CC) and hydroquinone (HQ). Due to the excellent electrocatalytic ability of Cu2O/Mo2C@C, the prepared sensor exhibits good electroanalytical performance, which shows good linearity in the concentration ranges of 0.50–200.00 μM for CC and HQ with the limits of detection of 0.38 μM and 0.13 μM. In addition, this sensor can be used to detect CC and HQ simultaneously in real samples with satisfactory results.

Efficient Iodine Removal by Porous Biochar-Confined Nano-Cu2O/Cu0: Rapid and Selective Adsorption of Iodide and Iodate Ions

Jiaqi Li,Mengzhou Wang,Xu Zhao,Zitong Li,Yihui Niu,Sufeng Wang,Qina Sun

Iodine is a nuclide of crucial concern in radioactive waste management. Nanomaterials selectively adsorb iodine from water; however, the efficient application of nanomaterials in engineering still needs to be developed for radioactive wastewater deiodination.Artemiaegg shells possess large surface groups and connecting pores, providing a new biomaterial to remove contaminants. Based on theArtemiaegg shell-derived biochar (AES biochar) and in situ precipitation and reduction of cuprous, we synthesized a novel nanocomposite, namely porous biochar-confined nano-Cu2O/Cu0(C-Cu). The characterization of C-Cu confirmed that the nano-Cu2O/Cu0was dispersed in the pores of AES biochar, serving in the efficient and selective adsorption of iodide and iodate ions from water. The iodide ion removal by C-Cu when equilibrated for 40 min exhibited high removal efficiency over the wide pH range of 4 to 10. Remarkable selectivity towards both iodide and iodate ions of C-Cu was permitted against competing anions (Cl−/NO3−/SO42−) at high concentrations. The applicability of C-Cu was demonstrated by a packed column test with treated effluents of 1279 BV. The rapid and selective removal of iodide and iodate ions from water is attributed to nanoparticles confined on the AES biochar and pore-facilitated mass transfer. Combining the advantages of the porous biochar and nano-Cu2O/Cu0, the use of C-Cu offers a promising method of iodine removal from water in engineering applications. Keywords:nanoparticles;cuprous;biochar;Artemia;iodide ion;iodate ion

Facile Method to Fabricate Cactus-like Ag NPs/CuO/Cu2O Nanocomposites for Recyclable SERS Detection of Trace Carbendazim Residues

Ya Lu,Zhuanfang Bi,Guangyi Shang

Detection of trace carbendazim in agricultural products or environment is challenging but important for human health and environmental protection. Developing a sensitive and recyclable surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate is one of the effective methods to detect such pesticide residues. In this work, we developed a facile method to fabricate a three-dimensional cactus-like Ag nanoparticles/CuO/Cu2O nanocomposite (CACN) based on a galvanic replacement reaction between Tollens’ reagent and Cu foam. This design combined the Raman enhancement effect and photocatalytic activity, providing a multifunctional and reusable substrate for highly sensitive SERS detection. It was found that the enhancement and photocatalysis of the CACN substrate were closely related to the concentration of Tollens’ reagent, and the 10-CACN substrate (prepared at 10 mM) demonstrated excellent sensitivity, reproducibility, and recyclability. The substrate was successfully applied for the detection of carbendazim solution with a detection limit of 1.5 × 10–10 M and could be reused up to 7 times. More importantly, the substrate can be employed for the detection of trace carbendazim in real apple peels with a detection limit of ∼8.5 × 10–4 ppm, which is far below that of 2.0 × 10–1 ppm suggested by China, United Kingdom, and European Union. These results suggest that the facile fabrication method and the excellent substrate would facilitate the SERS technology closer to practical application in the detection of pesticide residues.

A facile synthesis of PEGylated Cu2O@SiO2/MnO2 nanocomposite as efficient photo−Fenton−like catalysts for methylene blue treatment

Wu Mingzhou,He Shuqing,Ha Enna,Hu Junqing,Ruan Shuangchen

The removal of toxic organic dyes from wastewater has received much attention from the perspective of environmental protection. Metal oxides see wide use in pollutant degradation due to their chemical stability, low cost, and broader light absorption spectrum. In this work, a Cu2O−centered nanocomposite Cu2O@SiO2/MnO2−PEG with an average diameter of 52 nm was prepared for the first time via a wet chemical route. In addition, highly dispersed MnO2 particles and PEG modification were realized simultaneously in one step, meanwhile, Cu2O was successfully protected under a dense SiO2 shell against oxidation. The obtained Cu2O@SiO2/MnO2−PEG showed excellent and stable photo−Fenton−like catalytic activity, attributed to integration of visible light−responsive Cu2O and H2O2−responsive MnO2. A degradation rate of 92.5% and a rate constant of 0.086 min−1 were obtained for methylene blue (MB) degradation in the presence of H2O2 under visible light for 30 min. Additionally, large amounts of •OH and 1O2 species played active roles in MB degradation. Considering the enhanced degradation of MB, this stable composite provides an efficient catalytic system for the selective removal of organic contaminants in wastewater.

Metal–organic framework derived carbon-encapsulated hollow CuO/Cu2O heterostructure heterohedron as an efficient electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction

Lixin Zhang,Congli Wang,Hongfang Jiu,Qianwen Xu,Xin Li,Wei Song,Shiyu Luo,Jiahui Zhao

It is of pivotal significance to probe highly efficient, cost-effective and low-cost catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction. Herein, a closely packed carbon-encapsulated CuO/Cu2O heterohedron with a heterojunction structure is reported that combines chemical etching and thermal oxidation processes. CuO/Cu2O@C-10 has remarkable catalytic activity for HER with an overpotential of 121 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 and a Tafel slope of 81.58 mV dec−1, along with excellent stability in alkaline media under optimal conditions. Benefiting from CuO/Cu2O nanoparticles embedded in a carbon matrix, it forms a porous heterohedron structure by a close packing mode, owing to the unique CuO/Cu2O heterostructure with an ultrathin coated carbon layer and an interconnected conductive carbon network structure. These characteristics make a great contribution to the massive number of active interfacial sites, alleviating the aggregation of active substances, enhancing ion diffusion and the conductivity of the materials. This facile strategy sheds new light on a rational synthesis for a highly efficient hydrogen evolution catalyst with a heterostructure.
