Influence of calcination temperature on CeO2-CuO catalyst for the selective catalytic reduction of NO with NH3

Wei-guo Pan,Yue Zhou,Rui-tang Guo,Wen-long Zhen,Jie-nan Hong,Hong-jian Xu,Qiang Jin,Cheng-gang Ding,Shi-yi Guo

CeO-CuO catalysts were prepared by citric acid method at different calcination temperatures. The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of calcination temperature on the catalytic activity of CeO 2 -CuO catalyst for the selective catalytic reduction of NO with NH 3 . As can be seen from the results, Ce-Cu(450) is of the best low temperature selective catalytic reduction (SCR) activity among the three catalysts, which may be resulted from its large surface area, good redox ability, strong NH 3 adsorption capacity, and high concentration of Cu 2+ and active oxygen species on the surface. © 2013 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Environ Prog, 33: 385–389, 2014

Morphology-Modulated Mesoporous CuO Electrodes for Efficient Interfacial Contact in Nonenzymatic Glucose Sensors and High-Performance Supercapacitors

Wen Zhang,Gan Jia,Hui Li,Shuo Liu,Chunwei Yuan,Yunfei Bai,Degang Fu

Surface texture of a nanostructured electrode plays a key role in electrochemical application. Here we reported the CuO microspheres with different nanostructures covered nickel foam skeleton obtained via controllable synthesis strategy with the assistance of urea, and their performance in nonenzymatic glucose sensor and supercapacitor applications. The suitable nanostructures are conductive to pave the way to provide sufficient interfacial contact between electrode and electrolyte. The twin CuO microspheres composed of ultrathin nanoslices being ∼6 nm in thickness and presented well-defined mesoporous nanostructure. The glucose sensor based on the twin CuO nanoslice sphere/Ni foam composite electrode had two wide linear response ranges with ultrahigh sensitivity of 1.864×104 μA mM−1 cm−2 from 1 μM to 100 μM and 160.6 μA mM−1 cm−2 from 1 mM to 8 mM, and a remarkable lower detection limit less than 60 nM (S/N = 3), with a response time as fast as 3 s. Besides, we demonstrated that the electrode was capable of delivering superior areal specific capacitance of 425 mF cm−2 at current density of 0.5 mA cm−2 with excellent cycling stability. Moreover, the investigation of the effects of CuO surface morphology on the interfacial processes can be extended to a wide range of electrochemical systems.

Remediation of Anthracene-Contaminated Soil by ClO2 in the Presence of Magnetic Fe3O4-CuO@Montmorillonite as Catalyst

Ma Yulin,Gu Na,Gao Jinlong,Wang Kuitao,Wu Yunxia,Meng Xiaoyu

Fe 3 O 4 -CuO@montmorillonite was prepared using coprecipitation method, and its structure was determined by XRD, IR, and transmission electron micrograph (TEM). Montmorillonite in Fe 3 O 4 -CuO@montmorillonite nanocomposite allowed the silicate layer of montmorillonite to behave as a barrier, which prevented the agglomeration and natural crystallization of Fe 3 O 4 and CuO. Furthermore, the chlorine dioxide (ClO 2 ) oxidative degradation of anthracene-contaminated soil was studied in detail using Fe 3 O 4 -CuO@montmorillonite as a magnetic heterogeneous catalyst. The operating parameters such as ClO 2 concentration, catalyst dosage, reaction time, and pH were evaluated. Compared with the conventional ClO 2 oxidation process without the catalyst, the ClO 2 catalytic oxidation system could significantly enhance the degradation efficiency. Under the optimal condition (anthracene concentration 89.8 mg/kg, water soil mass ratio 3:1, initial pH 7, ClO 2 concentration 1 mol/kg, catalyst dosage 1 g/kg, reaction time 30 min, and reaction temperature 25 °C), anthracene degradation efficiency achieved 96.2 %. The catalyst could be easily reused by magnetic separation and used at least 8 cycles without obvious loss of activity. The kinetic studies revealed that the ClO 2 catalytic oxidation degradation of anthracene-contaminated soil with Fe 3 O 4 -CuO@montmorillonite as catalyst followed pseudo-first-order kinetics with respect to ClO 2 concentration. Thus, this study showed potential application of ClO 2 catalytic oxidation process in remediation of organic pollutant-contaminated soil.

Effect of SiO2-Li2O3-CuO additive on piezoelectric properties of PMS-PZT ceramics at low sintering temperature

Shuai He,Guicheng Jiang,Qian Wang,Lang Bian,Bin Yang

Lead zirconate titanate (PZT) based piezoelectric ceramics are applied in ultrasonic transducers and multilayer actuators fields universally. Excellent piezoelectric properties of PZT-based ceramics of low sintering temperature are crucial for the applications of high-power motors and multilayer piezo-actuators due to the reduction of cost and energy consumption. In this paper, a ternary solid-solution ceramic system 0.05Pb(Mn 1/3 Sb 2/3 )O 3 -0.47PbZrO 3 -0.48PbTiO 3 (PMS-PZT) was studied. A new complex additive composed of SiO 2 -Li 2 O 3 -CuO was doped into the PMS-PZT ceramics. The doping of CuO and Li 2 O 3 was discovered to be able to lower the sintering temperature and remain electric properties efficiently, while the doping of SiO 2 can decrease the grain size and increase the density. All ceramic samples were fabricated by solid-phase reaction method and sintered in the low temperature range from 800 °C to 1000 °C. The phase structure, morphology of natural surface and electrical properties of ceramics doped by 0.5 wt% additive were characterized. The 0.5 wt% additive doped PMS-PZT ceramics exhibit remarkable comprehensive piezoelectric properties sintered at 900 °C ( d 33 = 343 pC/N, Q m = 1016, T c = 328 °C, tan δ = 0.4 % (at 25 °C), ε r = 1344, d 33 * = 490 pm/V). The sintering temperature 900 °C is significantly below the melting point of Ag (961.9 °C) and Cu (1083.4 °C), so the more cost-effective Cu internal electrodes and Ag rich Ag/Pd electrodes can be used to substitute the expensive Pd rich Ag/Pd internal electrodes in the production of devices composed of multilayer ceramic. The research of this work provides an important candidate additive for the applications of high-performance transducers and multilayer actuators with low cost.

Enhancing photocatalytic H2 evolution from water on CuO-Co3O4/TiO2: The key roles of Co3O4 loading amounts

Haiyan Shen,Dawei Ni,Ping Niu,Yi Zhou,Tianyou Zhai,Ying Ma

Spatially controlled co-loading of both oxidation and reduction cocatalysts on semiconductor photocatalysts has been demonstrated to be favorable for photogenerated charge separation and thus enhanced photocatalytic activity. Herein, we presented a simple ball-milling method to improve photocatalytic H 2 production of TiO 2 by co-loading of oxidation cocatalyst Co 3 O 4 with reduction cocatalyst CuO , wherein the Co 3 O 4 loading amount was significant especially for TiO 2 loaded with sufficient or optimum CuO. In comparison with that on TiO 2 loaded with only CuO, the photocatalytic H 2 production from water over TiO 2 photocatalyst co-loaded with CuO and trace Co 3 O 4 was enhanced by approximately 5.5 times, even though complex spatial control was not adopted. In contrast, remarkable improvement of photocatalytic activity after Co 3 O 4 co-loading was only observed on TiO 2 photocatalysts loaded with less CuO in the presence of methanol. Better separation of photogenerated charges on the surface of dual-cocatalysts modified TiO 2 was further demonstrated by decreased luminescence as well as increased photogenerated electrons and hydroxyl radicals as compared to those loaded with only CuO.

Microwave-Assisted Synthesis of a Defect-Rich CuO Electrode for Selective Electrochemical CO2 Reduction to C2+ Products

Quhan Chen,Xiang Luo,Guohao Mu,Xinyi Mao,Hongfeng Yin,Edward Henry Lester,Tao Wu

Electrochemical reduction of CO2 to valuable C2+ chemicals using renewable energy is a crucial pathway for sustainable development, replacing traditional nonrenewable feedstocks. In this study, CuO-based materials were synthesized with and without microwave heating as electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction. The CuO synthesized under microwave irradiation (MW-CuO) showed a similar morphology to the conventionally heated samples but exhibited a higher density of defect sites with increased grain boundaries (GBs). MW-CuO electrodes with a Cu2+ and CO32– reactant ratio of 1.1 showed superior catalytic performance under identical reaction conditions. In particular, the catalytic activity of the MW-CuO electrode at −1.04 V vs RHE for the C2+ products is 49.3% higher than that of the CuO electrode. A faradaic efficiency (FE) of 71.9% is achieved for C2+ products, which is among the highest yields reported for OD-Cu catalysts. The spent MW-CuO electrode exhibited a significantly higher Cu+ to Cu0 ratio compared to the CuO electrode. The synergy of Cu(I) species and defective surface features is speculated to be responsible for the improved CO2ER selectivity toward multicarbon products. However, the activity decreased for longer reactions, which was attributed to the loss of defect sites and Cu agglomerations. This study highlights the effectiveness of a simple synthesis approach for the production of defect-rich electrocatalysts that improve the efficiency and selectivity of CO2 reduction.

Oxidative degradation of thiocyanate via activation of persulfate by CuO/α-MnO2 composite: Effect of calcination temperature

Jingmin Yan,Zhengchen Li,Licheng Ma,Peiwei Han,Wenkai Zhao,Shufeng Ye

In this study, a highly efficient CuO/α-MnO 2 bimetallic catalyst was synthesized by hydrothermal and calcination methods and employed as a peroxydisulfate (PDS) activator for the degradation of thiocyanate (SCN − ) in aqueous phase. The effect of calcination temperature on the catalytic performance of CuO/α-MnO 2 and the mechanism of the CM350/PDS system were studied. Under optimal conditions, almost 100 % of SCN − (100 mg/L) was degraded within 90 min. XRD , XPS , Raman, and H 2 -TPR analyses revealed that the catalytic performance was enhanced in the CM350 catalyst due to the formation of M-O-Cu + -like structures (M = Mn 3+ , Mn 4+ , Cu 2+ ) through the combination of α-MnO 2 with CuO . The structures exhibit excellent redox ability and facilitate electron transfer between Cu and Mn elements, thereby improving the activation effect of PDS. Besides, the Cu 1.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 generated from the high calcination temperature was not conducive to the SCN − degradation reaction. Moreover, the mechanism study indicated that SO 4 ·- , ·OH, and the electron transfer pathway mainly accounted for the SCN − degradation. This study provides some guidance for the synthesis of PDS activation materials and the treatment of industrial wastewater by an advanced oxidation process .

CuO Nanorod Arrays Shelled with Amorphous NiFe Layered Double Hydroxide Film for Enhanced Electrocatalytic Water Oxidation Activity

Qianqian Zhou,Ting-Ting Li,Jinjie Qian,Wei Xu,Yue Hu,Yue-Qing Zheng

Recently, extensive efforts have been focused on CuO materials as the non-noble metal electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, their catalytic efficiency is still far from meeting the need of practical large-scale water splitting because of poor electrical conductivity and limited exposed active sites. Herein, we report that amorphous NiFe layered double hydroxide film can be grown on CuO nanorod arrays supported on Cu foil (NiFe-LDH/CuO NRs/CF) to construct a core–shell heterostructure via a facile electrochemical deposition approach. The resulting core–shell heterostructure demonstrates excellent OER performance in 1 M KOH, only requiring a small overpotential of 290 mV to drive the current density of 50 mV cm–2 with a low Tafel slope of 60 mV dec–1, and maintaining a steady current density of 50 mA cm–2 for at least 35 h with negligible decline in catalytic activity, which is the best OER performance among reported CuO electrocatalysts to date. Remarkably, this catalytic performance is also superior to that of the state-of-the-art IrO2 catalyst. The prominent catalytic performance of NiFe-LDH/CuO NRs could be attributed to the synergistic effect between NiFe-LDH film and CuO NRs. As a result, our research indicates that the construction of amorphous heterostructures could be a promising strategy for development of efficient OER systems.

Cu/Zn-bimetallic organic framework-derived RGO/CuO–ZnO Z-scheme heterojunction for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production

Liang Chen,Jialin Zhao,Jinlong Li,Yan Zhuang,Dongxuan Guo,Shuang Meng,Dantong Zhang,Xue Yang,Guozhe Sui

Bimetallic-organic frameworks and their derivatives have attracted intensive attention in the field of photocatalytic hydrogen production due to their high porosity, distinctive three-dimensional structure, and favorable specific surface area. Despite these advantages, the efficiency of photocatalytic hydrogen production remains unsatisfactory owing to rapid complexation of electron-hole pairs and limited visible light utilization. Herein, in this work, the autogenous CuO–ZnO heterojunction nanoparticles are assembled on the surface of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) by calcining copper-zinc bimetallic-organic frameworks. The autogenous heterojunctions offer numerous active sites and enhance electron transfer at tightly bound heterogeneous interfaces. Furthermore, RGO acts as a co-catalyst or substrate, improving photocatalytic performance with its high surface area and excellent electron transport properties. Consequently, the RGO/CuO–ZnO Z-scheme heterojunction achieves an impressive hydrogen production rate of 479.73 μmol g −1  h −1 , which is 94.06 times higher than that of pristine ZnO. Overall, this work optimizes the potential of metal-organic framework-derived photocatalysts in hydrogen production and offers valuable insights into the effective construction of autogenous heterojunctions.

A CuO/MoO3-based SO2 gas sensor with moisture resistance and ultra-fast response at 90°C

Hairui Fang,Hong Chen,Rong Tan,Lei Ge,Tingting Zhao,Haochen Wang,Shenglin Yuan,Dong Wang

Sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ) is a toxic and harmful decomposition product generated during arc discharge or partial discharge in sulfur hexafluoride (SF 6 ) electrical equipment, which can corrode internal pipelines. Detecting SO 2 is crucial for assessing the insulation condition of equipment and preventing faults. To overcome the challenges faced by traditional SO 2 gas sensors, including high operating temperatures, slow response times, and poor moisture resistance, this paper proposes a novel SO 2 gas sensor based on CuO/MoO 3 . The morphology, composition, and chemical states of the materials were analyzed using different characterization techniques. At 90°C, the S2 sensor (CuO: MoO 3 =1: 1) exhibited a fast response time (10 s) to 10 ppm SO 2 and demonstrated good moisture resistance (a 1 % change in relative humidity (RH) has the same effect on the sensor as 25.9 ppb SO 2 ). The response of the S2 sensor to 100 ppm SO 2 was 26.5. Additionally, the voltage sensitivity of the S2 sensor at low (1–10 ppm) and high (10–100 ppm) concentrations are 658.74 mV/ppm and 33.43 mV/ppm, respectively. Therefore, the S2 sensor is more suitable for low concentration conditions. These good sensing characteristics of the S2 sensor are owing to the high content of oxygen vacancies (39.2 %) and the heterojunction effect in the composite material. Additionally, this sensor exhibits excellent anti-interference capabilities, including moisture resistance and high selectivity. Therefore, the CuO/MoO 3 -based SO 2 gas sensor can be effectively applied to detect the decomposition of SF 6 .

Preparation of CuO/Activated Carbon Fiber Filter for Adsorption/Catalytic Degradation of Residual Chlorine in Drinking Water

Meng Jiayi,Mo Hengliang,Li Tianyu,Liu Manman,Chen Yili,Li Suoding,Wan Pingyu,Lv Long,Yang Hengyu,Zhao Wenfang,Wang Luocong

Residual chlorine has a bactericidal effect, but it may react with natural organic matter in water to produce harmful substances. In this work, we report an efficient residual chlorine removal filter with activated carbon fiber (ACF) as adsorption carrier and CuO as residual chlorine degradation catalyst. Experimental results show that CuO has high catalytic efficiency and no attenuation of catalytic performance in 2924 h. The CuO is loaded on the surface of ACF by dipping-calcinating method. When the loading rate is 1.5%, the CuO distribution is uniform without defects and agglomeration. Continuous-flow experiment result shows that 1.5%-CuO/ACF filter can treat water amount 2.2 times as long as that for single ACF filter (residual chlorine concentration < 0.1 mg/L). Weak acidity and rising temperature can improve the reaction activity and increase the degradation amount of residual chlorine. The composite filter has excellent adsorption performance for Cu 2+ , showing the Cu 2+ concentration in the produced water is less than 0.1 mg/L after filter treatment, which is in line with the National Drinking Water Standards, and in agreement with the Standard for Safety Assessment of Water Transmission and Distribution Equipment and Protective Materials for Drinking Water (GB/T17219-1998) of Immersion Experiment, indicating that 1.5%-CuO/ACF filter has good stability and safety. Precisely regulating combustion and ectrostatic discharge safety properties of Al/CuO nanothermite by inserting g-C3N4 nanosheet

Chong Wan,Yushu Xiong,Honghong Qin,Zhao Qin,Suhang Chen,Kangzhen Xu

Nanothermites are presenting competitive advantage potential in military and civilian applications, but high electrostatic discharge (ESD) sensitivity severely hinders their preparation, storage and usage. Aiming to improve the safety and combustion properties of energetic materials (EMs), the two-dimensional semiconductor materials graphite carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 also abbreviated as CN) was inserted into the Al/CuO mixture via the one-step sol-freeze-drying method. The successful preparation of samples was confirmed by morphological and chemical bond characterization. Then DFT calculation and BET tests prove that more active sites exist in reaction interface, and the adsorption between Al atoms and CuO unit cells are easier due to polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and g-C 3 N 4 functioning, thereby improving the combustion of Al/CuO and ESD safety. The Al/CuO/CN nanocomposite with 2.5 wt% CN has an ESD ignition threshold of 3.2 mJ and realizes maximal reaction energy and constant volume heat of combustion ( Q v ) of 1400.4 J·g −1 and 5896 J·g −1 , respectively. As the CN content grows to 10.0 wt%, the ESD ignition threshold keeps decreasing to 8.45 mJ. Additionally, PVP and CN show superior advantages in regulating the combustion of Al/CuO, and the possible effect mechanism is investigated. This work will provide a fresh strategy for extending applications of nanothermites.
