Unveiling the Electrochromic Switch: The π Spacer's Pivotal Role in Fluorinated D-A Copolymer for High Color Efficiency and Energy-Saving Smart Windows

Meimei Zhu,Shuhan Cao,Shunyu Wang,Xingchen Liu,Xiangwen Wu,Dongwen Zou,Hongyang Li,Yaowu He,Hong Meng

Donor-Acceptor (D-A) copolymers are critical for cost-effective and energy-efficient electrochromic devices (ECDs) and smart windows. In this study, a type of copolymers with dual-introduction of alkyl thiophene as π spacer and fluorine are designed for highly efficient ECDs, contributing to superior color efficiency (CE). Through π spacer modification, the twist angle as well as the optical bandgap of the copolymers (PDT-Th-BT) are minimized via blocking the F…O noncovalent repulsive interaction. ECDs based on PDT-Th-BT1F are achieved with high CE of 1440   cm²/C, along with electrochromic contrast up to 41.6%. This CE is the best yet among ECDs based on fluorination D-A type copolymers according to literature. Furthermore, smart window made from PDT-Th-BT1F contribute a 5 ℃ cooling down compared to the glass in the building models and an energy saving of 631,257.14 kWh in a 26,404.54 m 2 building model, greatly conducive to environmental protection. This work presents a viable strategy for the development of highly efficient ECDs and smart windows.

Fei Fan,Shiyu Han,Ying Li,Lu Qi,Jie Kang,Zhiping Chen,Chang Tian,DeChao Wang,Wenwu Zhou

The microenvironments including the surface hydroxyls , the oxygen vacancies , and the d-band center of hierarchical TS-1 zeolite pickled by hydrochloric acid were regulated by ZrO 2 , the effect of ZrO 2 on the physicochemical properties and the catalytic performances of the corresponding NiMoS supported catalysts were studied. The experimental and theoretical calculation results show that the d-band center, the surface hydroxyl groups , and the oxygen vacancies were regulated after incorporation of ZrO 2 . Resulting in the modulated acidity of the support and the metal support interaction of the catalysts, further promoting the formation of type-II NiMoS active phases. The catalytic performance evaluations show that catalyst NiMo/1-ZAT exhibits the superior HDS performance, kinetic study further demonstrated that the enhanced catalytic activity was mainly contributed by the improved direct desulfurization activity generated from the moderate support acidity, suitable MSI, highest sulfidation degrees, most type-II NiMoS active phase and highest activity of individual active sites.

Biodegradable self-assembled nanoparticles of poly (d,l-lactide-co-glycolide)/hyaluronic acid block copolymers for target delivery of docetaxel to breast cancer

Jingbin Huang,He Zhang,Yuan Yu,Yan Chen,Dong Wang,Guoqing Zhang,Guichen Zhou,Junjie Liu,Zhiguo Sun,Duxin Sun,Ying Lu,Yanqiang Zhong

To develop biodegradable docetaxel-loaded self-assembled nanoparticles of poly ( d , l -lactide-co-glycolide)/hyaluronic acid block copolymers were successfully synthesized. These copolymers could form nanoparticles with small size (<200 nm), an acceptable CMC (∼7.9 mg/L), typical core/shell structure and superior stability in one week. DTX-loaded PLGA 502H -b-HA 5.6k nanoparticles (DTX/SANPs) showed a biphasic release pattern within 120 h, and exhibited enhanced cytotoxicity toward CD44-overexpressing MDA-MB-231 cells. Cellular uptake study indicated that PLGA 502H -b-HA 5.6k nanoparticles (SANPs) were taken up in MDA-MB-231 cells by CD44-mediated endocytosis . Pharmacokinetics study revealed DTX/SANPs could prolong the circulation of DTX in the blood. In vivo studies demonstrated that SANPs exhibited enhanced tumor targeting and antitumor activity with lower systemic toxicity. In conclusion, DTX/SANPs have great potential for targeted chemotherapy for CD44-overexpressing breast cancer.

Synthesis and Evaluation of the Anticonvulsant Activities of 4-(2-(Alkylthio)benzo[d]oxazol-5-yl)-2,4-dihydro-3H-1,2,4-triazol-3-ones

Ming-Xia Song,Zhen-Yuan Wang,Shi-Hui He,Sheng-Wang Yu,Shi-Long Chen,Dong-Fu Guo,Wen-Hao Zhao,Xian-Qing Deng

In this study, a novel series of 4-(2-(alkylthio)benzo[d]oxazol-5-yl)-2,4-dihydro-3H-1,2,4-triazol-3-ones (4a–m) was designed and synthesized. The anticonvulsant activities of these compounds were evaluated by using the maximal electroshock seizure (MES) and subcutaneous pentylenetetrazole (scPTZ) seizure models in mice. The neurotoxicity of these compounds was evaluated using the rotarod neurotoxicity test. The majority of compounds showed anti-MES activities at 100 or 300 mg/kg. Compound4gwas considered to be the most promising, based on its potency against MES- and PTZ-induced seizures with ED50values of 23.7 and 18.9 mg/kg, respectively. The TD50value of4gwas 284.0 mg/kg, which resulted in a higher protective index (PI = TD50/ED50) value than that of carbamazepine and valproate. In an ELISA test, compound4gsignificantly increased the γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) content in mouse brain. In addition, pretreatment with thiosemicarbazide (an inhibitor of the GABA synthesizing enzyme) significantly decreased the activity of4gin the MES model, which suggests that the mechanism through which compound4gelicits its anticonvulsive action is at least in part through increasing the GABA level in the brain. Keywords:anticonvulsant;maximal electroshock;pentylenetetrazole;benzoxazole;triazolone

Study on the neuroprotective effect of Zhimu-Huangbo extract on mitochondrial dysfunction in HT22 cells induced by D-galactose by promoting mitochondrial autophagy

Ao Xue,Deping Zhao,Chenyu Zhao,Xue Li,Meng Yang,Hongmei Zhao,Can Zhao,Xia Lei,Jianli Wu,Ning Zhang

Ethnopharmacological relevance Zhimu-Huangbo (ZB) herb pair is a common prescription drug used by physicians of all dynasties, and has significant neuroprotective effect, such as the ZB can significantly promote neuronal cell regeneration, repair neuronal damage, and improve cognitive disorders. However, its ingredients are urgently needed to be identified and mechanisms is remained unclear. Aim of the study Using ultra performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole-time of flight-mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-TOF-MS), the study of neuroprotective mechanism of Zhimu-Huangbo extract (ZBE) is investigated, and the network pharmacology technology and experimental validation is also performed. Material and methods Firstly, UPLC-Q-TOF-MS technology was used to characterize the chemical components contained in the ZBE. After that, the TCMSP database and the Swiss Target Prediction method were used to search for potential target genes for ZBE compounds. At the same time, the OMIM and GeneCards disease databases were used to search for Alzheimer's disease (AD) targets and expanded with the GEO database. Then, GO and KEGG enrichment analysis was performed using OECloud tools. Subsequently, the potential mechanism of ZBE therapeutic AD predicted by network pharmacological analysis was experimentally studied and verified in vitro . Results In the UPLC-Q-TOF-MS analysis of the ZBE, a total of 39 compounds were characterized including Neomangiferin, Oxyberberine, Timosaponin D, Berberine, Timosaponin A-III, Anemarsaponin E, Timosaponin A-I, Smilagenin and so on. A total of 831 potential targets and 13995 AD-related target genes were screened. A further analysis revealed the number of common targets between ZBE and AD is 698. Through GO and KEGG enrichment analysis, we found that ZBE's anti-AD targets were significantly enriched in autophagy and mitochondrial autophagy related pathways. The results of cell experiments also confirmed that ZBE can promote mitochondrial autophagy induced by D-galactose (D-gal) HT22 cells through the PTEN-induced kinase 1/Parkin (PINK1/Parkin) pathway. Conclusion ZBE can promote autophagy of mitochondria and play a protective role on damaged neurons.

A graphene oxide enhanced terahertz metamaterial for ultra-sensitive detection of D-aspartic acid solution

Ji Qi,Pibin Bing,Lanju Liang,Xin Yan,Haiyun Yao,Zhenhua Li,Ziqun Wang,Zhongyang Li,Qing Liu,Guifang Wu

Trace biological solution detection is currently of great interest in the terahertz (THz) field. Graphene oxide (GO) is an amphiphilic graphene-like material with favorable biocompatibility, showing good potential applicability in THz liquid detection. In this work, a GO enhanced THz metamaterial liquid biosensor with a polyimide capillary as the microfluidic channel is proposed. The experimental results reveal that the capillary structure can avoid the large absorption of THz waves by controlling the amount of water. In the biosensor, GO is demonstrated to play an important role in enhancing the THz response, improving surface adsorption, and facilitating signal transmission. It is able to enhance the immobilization of D-Asp, which was confirmed by both Raman spectra and XRD scans, thus resulting in the structural changes of GO. The transmission amplitude variation of THz waves indicates that the electromagnetic response of GO varies with the adsorbed D-Asp concentration. The proposed biosensor achieves an ultra-low detection limit of 3 pg mL−1 and a maximum transmission change of about 12.5%. Thus, with their robust resistance to water interference and outstanding detection performance, the proposed biosensors show potential advantages for the expanded application of THz metamaterials in the ultra-sensitive detection of trace biological samples in liquid environments.

Cyclovirobuxine D suppresses cancer stemness in osteosarcoma with implication of the noncanonical NF-kappaB pathway

Jinku Guo,Yingfeng Cao,Kaipen Jin,Bing Liu,Wei Wang,Chen Chen,Jun Xie,Ankai Xu

BackgroundCyclovirobuxine D (CVB-D), an alkaloid from Buxus microphylla, exhibits anticancer effects in various tumors, but its role in osteosarcoma remains unexplored. This study investigates its efficacy and mechanism in osteosarcoma.MethodsWe screened a drug library and evaluated CVB-D’s effects on osteosarcoma cell lines using CCK-8 and colony formation assays. Saos2 and K7M2 cells were selected for further analysis. Flow cytometry assessed apoptosis and cell cycle. RNA-seq identified downstream pathways, including NF-kappaB, and stemness markers (CD24, ALDH1A1). Stemness was examined via serum-free suspension culture, and NF-kappaB pathway activator Diprovocim was used in rescue experiments. A xenograft mouse model validated the findings.ResultsCVB-D suppressed proliferation, stemness, and induced apoptosis in osteosarcoma. These effects may be partially mediated through the p-NF-kappaB2/NF-kappaB2 axis and were reversible upon NF-kappaB pathway activation.ConclusionCVB-D inhibits osteosarcoma possibly via the non-canonical NF-kappaB pathway, suggesting a potential therapeutic strategy.

L-Cycloserine, not D-Cycloserine, inhibits IscS-mediated iron–sulfur cluster biosynthesis in Escherichia coli

Lihe Zhang,Yongjuan Li,Yuhang Bao,Jie Feng,Runyu Chen,Wenjing Zhang,Yixuan Zhu,Liwen Zhang,Yin Zhang,Feng Liang,Huimin Chen,Xinhua Luo,Guoqiang Tan,Wu Wang

D-Cycloserine (DCS) is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat drug-resistant tuberculosis. It exerts its antimicrobial effects by inhibiting a variety of pyridoxal 5′-phosphate (PLP)-dependent enzymes. Recent studies indicate that cycloserine targets cysteine desulfurases, which are essential for iron–sulfur (Fe–S) cluster biogenesis. However, the mechanistic details of its effect on Fe–S cluster assembly are unclear. In this study, we demonstrate that L-Cycloserine (LCS), but not its enantiomer DCS, inhibits the cysteine desulfurase activity of Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) IscS, resulting in impaired Fe–S cluster biosynthesis. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC–MS) analysis showed that LCS converts the IscS-bound PLP cofactor into pyridoxamine 5′-phosphate (PMP). Importantly, LCS significantly inhibited the growth of the uropathogenic E. coli strain CFT073, and remained effective against experimentally-evolved DCS-resistant strains in synthetic human urine medium. Our work highlights Fe–S cluster biosynthesis as a novel antimicrobial target and proposes LCS as a promising alternative therapeutic agent to counteract DCS resistance.

DES-PMMA-assisted preparation of D-Serine chiral imprinted polymers and its molecular recognition behavior

Xianyu Guo,Wentao Tan,Ling Wang,Fengrui Yang,Yuhang Ma,Yi Shen,Caihong Luo,Qian Luo,Xiao Xie,Hui Li

Chiral separation of D- and L-Serine is of great value in the fields of biopharmaceuticals. For this purpose, a D-Serine imprinted polymer was prepared by precipitation polymerization with the aid of deep eutectic solvent (DES) and crowding agent (polymethyl methacrylate, PMMA). The preparation conditions were optimized by a L 9 (3 4 ) orthogonal design. Structure characterization was performed by the FTIR, SEM, AFM and XPS techniques and adsorption selectivity and separation efficiency for this imprinted material investigated. The results showed that under the conditions of pH 5.0 and 303 K, the polymer exhibited maximum adsorption capacity, reaching 121.4 mg g -1 , with a selectivity factor as high as 11.87. When this D-serine-imprinted material was used as a chromatographic stationary phase to separate a mixture of D- and L-serine, the resolution achieved was 1.765, demonstrating high chiral separation efficiency. The high adsorption selectivity for the novel imprinted material might result from the synergistic effect of deep eutectic solvent with macromolecular crowding reagent during the preparation of the imprinted materials. One hand, deep eutectic solvent can stabilize the zwitterionic form of D-Serine ( + H 3 N-CH(CH 2 OH)-COO - ) and hence enhance the ionic interactions between the template and functional monomers and the stability of template-functional monomer complexes; on the other hand, crowding agents significantly improved the binding efficiency between the functional monomer and the template molecules during the pre-assembly stage through the "excluded volume effect". This synergy promotes to form higher density and more precise specific recognition sites during the synthesis of the imprinted polymer and to improve the adsorption selectivity of the material obtained.

Cognitive–exercise dual-task training delays natural aging/d-galactose-induced cognitive decline in mice

Zhu Zi-Man,Dai Teng-Teng,Zhang Rong,Huang Pei-Ling,Wu Ji-Lin,Song Li,Gong Wei-Jun

Background Cognitive–exercise dual-task training has been shown to enhance cognitive function through mechanisms such as suppression of chronic inflammation, reduction of oxidative stress, and enhancement of synaptic plasticity. However, the precise mechanisms underlying the ability of dual-task training to delay aging-related cognitive decline remain incompletely understood. Methods Aged male C57BL/6J mice were subjected to a 12-week intervention program consisting of cognitive training, exercise, or cognitive–exercise dual-task training. Cognitive and physical function were assessed using a battery of behavioral tests, including the open field test, elevated plus maze test, inverted grid test, wire hanging test, rotarod test, novel object recognition test, novel object localization test, eight-arm maze test, and Morris water maze test. Hippocampal aging and associated molecular changes were assessed using multiple techniques, including terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) staining, Nissl staining, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, flow cytometry, quantitative polymerase chain reaction, Western blotting, co-immunoprecipitation, and dual-luciferase reporter assays. In addition, we established in vitro models of cellular senescence using d -galactose, RNA overexpression/silencing models utilizing siRNA, and Ephrin type-B receptor 2 (EphB2) inducer/inhibitor models to explore specific molecular mechanisms. Results Age-related upregulation in microRNA (miR)-204 and downregulation in long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) nuclear enriched abundant transcript 1 (NEAT1) were observed to disrupt Ephrin-B1 (EFNB1)/EphB2 interactions, leading to reduced cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP)/protein kinase A (PKA) and phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (Akt) signaling pathway activation. These alterations were implicated in the pathogenesis of aging-related cognitive decline. Timely interventions, especially cognitive–exercise dual-task, were found to attenuate these phenomena, thereby delaying the progression of aging-related cognitive decline. Conclusions Timely intervention during the aging process can effectively delay the progression of cognitive decline. The effects of cognitive–exercise dual-task training may surpass those of single-task interventions with either cognitive training or exercise alone. Graphical abstract

D-Camphorsulfonic Acid Modulated Self-Assembled Monolayer for Stable and Efficient Inverted Perovskite Solar Cells

Zheng Bi,Junyu Qin,Wei Su,Xueyin Li,Yao Gao,Fei Long,Disheng Yao

In recent years, self-assembled molecular (SAM) hole-transport materials have boosted the efficiency of inverted perovskite solar cells. However, they also introduce numerous interfacial and structural challenges, presenting a double-edged sword for device development. Such as poor wettability for perovskite precursors-which adversely affects perovskite film quality-as well as insufficient stability and nonuniform formation. These issues cause localized inefficient charge transport and increased interfacial recombination, ultimately impairing device performance and reproducibility. To overcome these limitations, we introduced d-camphorsulfonic acid (D-CSA) as a multifunctional interfacial modifier. The strongly acidic sulfonic acid group (–SO3H) of D-CSA plays a pivotal role: it enhances the wettability of the perovskite precursor on Me-4PACz ([4-(3,6-dimethyl-9H-carbazol-9-yl)butyl]phosphonic acid) and, acting as a proton donor, passivates the terminal carbazole group of Me-4PACz via protonation. Concurrently, the resulting sulfonate group (–SO3–) coordinates with undercoordinated Pb2+ ions from the perovskite layer. The incorporation of D-CSA also optimizes the energy level alignment between the HTL and the perovskite. The devices modified with D-CSA achieved a power conversion efficiency of 25.47% with negligible hysteresis, significantly outperforming the control devices (23.25%). Furthermore, the D-CSA-modified devices exhibited substantially enhanced moisture resistance, thermal stability, and operational stability under continuous illumination. This work provides a feasible strategy for developing highly efficient and stable inverted PSCs.

VO2 (D) submicron-spherical hierarchical structures as novel anode materials for aqueous lithium-ion batteries

Yining Ma,Dandan Zhu,Huaijuan Zhou,Yue Tang,Chenchen Hu,Xinyu Meng,Xiaodong Jin,Tongxiang Xu,Xun Cao

Vanadium dioxide (VO 2 ) material has been deemed as a potential anode candidate for aqueous lithium-ion batteries. Among its diversified polymorphs, the latest discovered VO 2 (D) receives the fewest reports on its application in energy storage. Herein, we successfully utilized a template-free solvothermal method to prepare VO 2 (D) submicron-spherical hierarchical structures, constructed with colibacillus-like nanorods . The VO 2 (D) submicron-spheres were applied as an active anode material into the aqueous lithium-ion battery, which exhibited suitable working potential. Furthermore, VO 2 (D)-based full cell with LiMn 2 O 4 as the cathode demonstrated high discharge capacity, good rate capability, and excellent cycling stability. The structural evolution, valence states of the VO 2 (D) electrode, and impedance variation of the full cell during cycling were investigated. The work reveals the potential of VO 2 (D) as a novel anode material for aqueous lithium-ion batteries.
