The solubility of 2-methylnaphthalene in different organic solvents was experimentally studied by the equilibrium method at temperatures from (278.15 to 303.15) K under atmospheric pressure. The solubility of 2-methylnaphthalene in all solvents increased with the increasing temperature. The solubility data were correlated with four thermodynamic models including the van’t Hoff equation, modified Apelblat equation, λh equation, and Wilson model. It was found that the calculated solubility with modified Apelblat equation provided a good agreement with the experimental values for the solubility behavior of 2-methylnaphthalene. The thermodynamic properties of the standard dissolution enthalpy, standard entropy, and the standard mole Gibbs free energy were evaluated based on the van’t Hoff analysis. The values of enthalpy of dissolution are positive, which indicate that the dissolution process of 2-methylnaphthalene in different organic solvents is endothermic.

Densities and viscosities of glycine, l-alanine, l-valine, l-threonine, and l-arginine in aqueous solutions of (0.0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, and 1.0) mol·kg–1 mannitol have been measured in the temperature range of (293.15 to 323.15) K under atmospheric pressure; then the measured densities and viscosities of experimental systems were correlated. These data were further used to calculate the apparent molar volumes (Vφ), the limiting partial molar volumes (Vφ0), the limiting partial molar volumes of transfer (ΔtrVφ0), the viscosity B-coefficients, and the free energies of activation per mole of solvent (Δμ10≠) and solute (Δμ20≠). The results were interpreted through solute–solute interaction and solute–solvent interaction on the basis of the cosphere overlap model and transition state theory.

Synthesis of 5-ethoxymethylfurfural (EMF) from the etherification of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) and the dehydrative etherification of fructose over K-10 clay supported dodecatungstophosphoric acid (abbreviated as K-10 clay-HPW). 30% wt.% K-10 clay-HPW was found to be the efficient and robust catalyst for the synthesis of EMF. The highest EMF yield of 91.5% was obtained from HMF after 10 h at 100 °C. Further more, the catalyst also showed high catalytic activity for the dehydrative etherification of fructose with EMF yield of 61.5%. The reaction work-up is very simple and the catalyst could be reused several times without the significant loss of its catalytic activity.

High-dielectric-constant (high-k) polymers are highly desirable for energy storage and dielectric applications in power systems and microelectronic devices because of their easy processing and flexibility. However, the enhancement of k is usually at the cost of other undesirable properties such as increase of dielectric loss and leakage currents and decrease of breakdown strength. Herein, using reversible-addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization, we report a series of novel low-temperature crosslinkable high-k copolymers, poly(2-(methylsulfonyl)ethyl methacrylate-co-glycidyl methacrylate) (poly(MSEMA-co-GMA)), which exhibit k values about 9–12. The crosslinking significantly enhances the breakdown strength (Eb ≈ 500 MV m−1), suppresses the leakage currents and improves the solvent resistance. The excellent dielectric performance makes the copolymers have both high energy storage capability and high energy efficiency. The discharged energy density reached 12.5 J cm−3 at 500 MV m−1. Noticeably, an efficiency higher than 85% was maintained even at a high field of 400 MV m−1, which is much higher than those of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) based ferroelectric polymers with comparable k. Furthermore, the poly(MSEMA-co-GMA) copolymers were successfully applied as dielectric layers for organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) to realize low-voltage operation.

The solubility data, composition of the solid solutions, and refractive indices of the LiCl–LiBr–H2O and CaCl2–CaBr2–H2O systems at 288.15 K were studied with the isothermal equilibrium dissolution method. The solubility diagrams and refractive index diagrams of the two systems were plotted at 288.15 K. There is no invariant point, one univariant solubility curve saturated with solid solution, and one crystallization field of the solid solution in the phase diagrams. The two systems belong to the solid solution type, and no double salts formed in the systems. The refractive indices calculated with an empirical equation agree well with the experimental data. By combining the composition equations and solubility equilibrium constant equations of the solid solutions, the solubilities of the two systems at 288.15 K were calculated on the basis of the Pitzer and Harvie–Weare models. The calculated solubilities agree well with the experimental results.

Owing to the adverse influences of irreversible oxidation, the development of MXene-based materials, especially those with satisfactory performance and longevity for aqueous energy storage, continues to suffer severe challenges. Herein, the strategy of targeted passivation-supported defect-lock-oxygen is conceived, whereby engineered the V 2 CT x material for controllable partial oxidation with enhanced regioselectivity. When the material works, inside the intrinsic defects, the outward diffusion of oxidation is confined by the Lewis bases around the defects, which allows for the controllable progress of oxidation. The defect-locked oxygen oxidizes the exposed carbon, thus forming sufficient amorphous carbons for enhancing the capacitive-type adsorption of K-ions. Then the oxidized defects enabled the fast kinetics via the cross-layer transport of K-ions. Benefiting from the strategy, the electrode assembly V 2 CT x -RTIL (V 2 CT x equipped with room temperature ionic liquid) exhibits high capacity, good rate capability, and ultra-longevity compared with those of the MXene materials so far reported. This work presents the first strategy of targeted passivation-supported defect-lock-oxygen for high-rate capability and super long-cycling aqueous K + storage and hopefully would provide the inspiration for the future design of novel electrodes.

The deterioration of climate exacerbates the freshwater crisis. Solar-thermal interfacial evaporation, using sunlight as a driving energy source, is a promising approach to provide an effective solution to freshwater shortages. However, the low energy conversion efficiency and expensive evaporator manufacturing are still to be resolved. Herein, a strategy of clean water harvesting by solar-absorbing germanium@k-carrageenan (Ge@CA) evaporator demonstrating superior energy conversion is proposed. The Ge nanoparticles exhibit a significant solar absorption of 92.33% to achieve efficient solar-thermal conversion. The CA hydrogel provides three-dimensional water transmission channels to the evaporating surface. Meanwhile, the Ge nanoparticles can be fabricated by a facile ball-milling method. The CA as a cheap biomass can be easily interacted with KCl to obtain the porous hydrogel. Taking the advantages of Ge nanoparticles and CA hydrogel, the Janus-type Ge@CA hydrogel evaporator can achieve an evaporation rate of 2.88 kg m −2 ·h −1 and a solar-vapor conversion efficiency of 82.65% under 1 sun irradiation. Furthermore, the evaporator can produce thermoelectricity with the output voltage of 140.95 mV and the short-circuit current of 13.32 mA, yielding a power of 1.17 W m −2 . This reported solar device has huge potential for cutting-edge solar harvesting and usage.

With the increasing demand for high-performance energy storage devices, potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) have attracted significant interest due to their large storage capacity, affordability, and high energy density. However, the large radius of potassium ions necessitates strong structural stability in the anode material to sustain long-term cycling. In this work, a self-templated nitrogen/sulfur co-doping carbon anode material was designed and synthesized using thiourea as both the doping source and template. This approach facilitated the incorporation of nitrogen and sulfur heteroatoms while creating a highly ordered structure during the carbonization process. The experimental results demonstrated that the additional S doping not only elevated the N doping level to provide more K-storage sites, which improved the specific capacity, but also increased the carbon stacking order to improve the stability of the PIBs. The N/S co-doping also encouraged the formation of a high-ionic conductivity SEI film for fast interfacial kinetics. The prepared anode demonstrated its great potential as an anode material for PIBs by delivering high capacities of 327 mAh g–1 at 50 mA g–1 and maintaining excellent cycling stability, which achieved 179 mAh g–1 after the long 2000 cycles at a high current density of 1000 mA g–1. This study provided some good ideas and methods for the development of high-performance anode materials for PIBs.

Sluggish kinetics and severe structural instability of manganese-based cathode materials for rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) lead to low-rate capacity and poor cyclability, which hinder their practical applications. Pillaring manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ) by pre-intercalation is an effective strategy to solve the above problems. However, increasing the pre-intercalation content to realize stable cycling of high capacity at large current densities is still challenging. Here, high-rate aqueous Zn 2+ storage is realized by a high-capacity K + -pillared multi-nanochannel MnO 2 cathode with 1 K per 4 Mn (δ-K 0.25 MnO 2 ). The high content of the K + pillar, in conjunction with the three-dimensional confinement effect and size effect , promotes the stability and electron transport of multi-nanochannel layered MnO 2 in the ion insertion/removal process during cycling, accelerating and accommodating more Zn 2+ diffusion. Multi-perspective in/ex-situ characterizations conclude that the energy storage mechanism is the Zn 2+ /H + ions co-intercalating and phase transformation process. More specifically, the δ-K 0.25 MnO 2 nanospheres cathode delivers an ultrahigh reversible capacity of 297 mAh g −1 at 1 A g −1 for 500 cycles, showing over 96 % utilization of the theoretical capacity of δ-MnO 2 . Even at 3 A g −1 , it also delivered a 63 % utilization and 64 % capacity retention after 1000 cycles. This study introduces a highly efficient cathode material based on manganese oxide and a comprehensive analysis of its structural dynamics. These findings have the potential to improve energy storage capabilities in ZIBs significantly.

Aging allows the occurrence and progression of cerebrovascular diseases, highlighting the importance of detecting senescent cells and tissues in the nervous system. Detecting senescent cells/tissues using nanoparticles as probes in the nervous system is desired with high sensitivity, high accuracy, and penetration of the blood-brain barrier. In response, we designed crown ether-based graphene quantum dots with fast proton transport channels to sense potassium ions, a significant differential indicator between healthy and senescent cells. Using the probe, we have achieved MRI-fluorescence dual-functional monitoring of potassium ion concentration in cells via fluorescent intensity and magnetic relaxation time. Importantly, we have further demonstrated the advantages of the crown ether-based graphene quantum dots in penetrating the blood-brain barrier, revealing their potential for diagnosing aging in the nervous system.

Synthesis of catalysts with high catalytic degradation activity for formaldehyde (HCHO) at room temperature is highly desirable for indoor air quality control. Herein, a novel K-Mn 3 O 4 @CeO 2 catalyst with excellent catalytic oxidation activity toward HCHO at near room temperature was reported. In particular, the K addition in K-Mn 3 O 4 @CeO 2 considerably enhanced the oxidation activity, and importantly, 99.3 % conversion of 10 mL of a 40 mg/L HCHO solution at 30 °C for 14 h was achieved, with simultaneous strong cycling stability. Moreover, the addition of K species considerably influenced the chemical valence state of Mn from +4 ( ε -MnO 2 ) to +8/3 (Mn 3 O 4 ) on the surface of CeO 2 , which obviously changed the tunnel structure and the number of oxygen vacancies. One part of K species is uniformly dispersed on K-Mn 3 O 4 @CeO 2 , and the other part exists in the tunnel structure of Mn 3 O 4 @CeO 2 , which is mainly used to balance the negative charge of the tunnel and prevent collapse of the structure, providing enough active sites for the catalytic oxidation of HCHO. We observed a phase transition from tunneled KMnO 2 to Mn 3 O 4 to tunneled MnO 2 with the decreasing K + content, in which K-Mn 3 O 4 @CeO 2 exhibited higher HCHO oxidation activity. In addition, K-Mn 3 O 4 @CeO 2 exhibited lower oxygen vacancy formation and HCHO adsorption energies in aqueous solution based on density functional theory calculations. This is because the K species provide more active oxygen species and richer oxygen vacancies on the surface of K-Mn 3 O 4 @CeO 2 , promote the mobility of lattice oxygen and the room-temperature reduction properties of oxygen species, and enhance the ability of the catalyst to replenish the consumed oxygen species. Finally, a possible HCHO catalytic oxidation pathway on the surface of K-Mn 3 O 4 @CeO 2 catalyst is proposed.

The densities and viscosities of aqueous solutions of sodium glycinate , sodium l -alaninate, sodium l -valinate, sodium l -threoninate and sodium l -argininate were measured at T = (293.15 to 333.15) K under the atmospheric pressure. The effects of temperature and concentration on the densities and viscosities of binary solutions were investigated. The volumetric and viscometric properties such as the apparent molar volume ( V φ ), the limiting partial molar volume ( V φ 0 ), the viscosity B -coefficient ( B ) and the activation energy for viscous flow ( Ea ) were calculated by the experimental density and viscosity data and analyzed based on the molecular structure and intermolecular interaction . Moreover, the group contribution method was utilized to study the limiting partial molar volume ( V φ 0 ), and the contributions of the end group (-NH 2 ,-COONa), CH- group, CH 2 - group, CH 3 - group, OH- group and CNHNHNH 2 - group to the limiting partial molar volume ( V φ 0 ) were obtained. The results show that all these groups have positive contributions to the limiting partial molar volume ( V φ 0 ).
