High-activity Mo, S co-doped carbon quantum dot nanozyme-based cascade colorimetric biosensor for sensitive detection of cholesterol

Lianjing Zhao,Zepei Wu,Guannan Liu,Huiying Lu,Yuan Gao,Fangmeng Liu,Chenguang Wang,Jiuwei Cui,Geyu Lu

Nanozymes have drawn considerable attention because of their lower cost, higher stability and convenient preparation compared to protein enzymes. In the present work, Mo, S co-doped carbon quantum dots (Mo-CQDs) as a peroxidase mimic were used to fabricate a cascade colorimetric biosensor to detect cholesterol. The Mo-CQDs possess a robust peroxidase-like activity, and they can easily catalyze 3,3,5,5-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to produce an oxidized TMB in the presence of H2O2. The Mo, S doping in the carbon quantum dots (CQDs) notably boosts the yield of CQDs and may facilitate the electron transfer between TMB and H2O2, which further enhances the catalytic activity of CQDs. The colorimetric biosensor based on Mo-CQDs and cholesterol oxidase exhibited excellent selectivity and high sensitivity for cholesterol in the range of 0.01–1.0 mM along with a detection limit as low as 7 μM. The total cholesterol concentration in the serum sample was measured with satisfactory results and read out by the naked eye, indicating the potential application in clinical diagnosis and portable test kits.

Effect of Mo loading on 2-naphthaldehyde formation from vapor phase oxidation of 2-methylnaphthalene with V2O5/TiO2 catalysts

Xiaoqiang Gao,Fang Zhang,Yi Yu,Yonghui Dou,Li Xu,Guoji Liu

Mo-modified V 2 O 5 /TiO 2 catalysts were prepared by wetness impregnation method and investigated for the selective oxidation of 2-methylnaphthalene to 2-naphthaldehyde. The catalysts were characterized by XRD, BET, XPS, and Raman to investigate the promotional effect of Mo on catalyst structure, surface property, and catalytic performance. The introduction of molybdenum decreases the amount of KVO 3 phase and enhances the dispersion of the vanadium phase. XPS and Raman results indicate that Mo prevents Sn and K to interact with V species and bonds with Ti or V through bridge oxygen. V1Mo1 sample demonstrates a remarkable improvement in conversion and selectivity compared with others.

Mo, Cu Bimetallic Loaded Hierarchical Pore ZSM-5 Catalysts for the Hydrothermal Aromatization of Algal Bio-Oil Model Compounds

Xiaoxian Li,Yuanzhe Gong,Qi Lu,Min Lin,Jian Liu,Yulong Wu

In this work, the hierarchical pore HZSM-5 zeolite was synthesized by the method of alkali treatment, and the bimetallic loading of Mo and Cu was investigated for the hydrothermal aromatization of stearic acid. After alkali treatment, the pore size of HZSM-5 increased, but the acid sites decreased. The metal loading reintroduced the Lewis acid sites, greatly increasing the ratio to Brönsted acid sites. Therefore, the treated catalyst achieved higher hydrothermal stability while maintaining the high activity of hydrothermal aromatization of stearic acid. Mo0.02Cu0.01/Z-0.2M achieved excellent activity in the stearic acid hydrothermal aromatization with a high overall TEX (toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes) yield of 50.19 wt %, including 10.30 wt % toluene, 3.82 wt % ethylbenzene, and 36.07 wt % xylene. In addition, Mo0.02Cu0.01/Z-0.2M still showed excellent catalytic activity while applied in the system of the simulated microalgal bio-oil. As the reactant changed to the mixture of stearic acid and hexadecanamide, an overall TEX yield of 34.11 wt % was obtained at 450 °C. These results demonstrate the excellent hydrothermal aromatization ability of the MoCu-supported hierarchical pore ZSM-5 zeolite, which provides the potential to produce value-added chemicals from algal biomass.

Hydrothermal synthesis of Mo,N-CQDs Co-modified BiVO4 for enhanced photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue under visible light

Cong Zhang,Huidong Xiong,Zhonghao Zhao,Xiaoyu Sun,Jingliang Cheng,Chaxiu Guo,Huadong Liu

In response to the need for efficient elimination of methylene blue (MB) from dye-containing wastewater, a Mo, N-co-doped carbon quantum dot-modified BiVO 4 (5% Mo, N-CQDs/BiVO 4 ) composite photocatalyst was developed. Pristine BiVO 4 suffers from rapid charge carrier recombination and limited visible-light utilization. Introduction of Mo, N-CQDs establishes a synergistic enhancement mechanism: (1) Mo, N-CQDs act as electron mediators, improving interfacial charge separation and migration, as evidenced by reduced charge transfer resistance. Mo doping introduces impurity energy levels that trap electrons and retard recombination, while nitrogen doping enhances electron tunneling and reduces interfacial resistance. (2) UV-Vis DRS confirms bandgap narrowing and enhanced visible-light absorption. (3) Photoelectrochemical analysis reveals significantly enhanced photocurrent response and reduced charge transfer resistance, confirming improved charge separation efficiency. Under visible light, the composite achieved a degradation rate constant of 0.04089 min −1 toward MB, a 3.31-fold enhancement over pure BiVO 4 , with >95% removal within 80 min. Radical trapping identified superoxide radicals (·O 2 − ) and holes (h + ) as the predominant active species, with h + contributing ∼62% of the activity. The catalyst retained 88.65% of its initial efficiency after four cycles, demonstrating good stability. This study provides a viable charge-regulation strategy using multi-element co-doped carbon quantum dots for semiconductor modification, highlighting its potential in dye wastewater treatment.

Robust Hydrogen Production at High Current Density via In Situ Generated MoO42– on Mo-Doped Ni3S2 Seawater Electrolysis Catalysts

Liming Chen,Wanjun Ou,Huijun Zhu,Wenbiao Zhang,Yuying Meng,Qingsheng Gao

The development of electrocatalysts that combine high activity with robust resistance to chlorine-induced corrosion remains a critical challenge for seawater electrocatalysis. Herein, we report a Mo-doped Ni3S2 (Mo-Ni3S2) bifunctional electrocatalyst grown in situ on nickel foam via a one-step hydrothermal method. In simulated seawater (1.0 M NaOH + 0.5 M NaCl), the optimal Mo-Ni3S2-50 catalyst exhibits exceptional bifunctional activity, requiring overpotentials of only 290 mV for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and 175 mV for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) to reach the current density of ±100 mA cm–2. More importantly, in situ characterizations reveal a dynamic equilibrium between Mo dopant dissolution and readsorption of molybdate species (MoO42–) during operation. This self-adaptive process not only enhances the OER activity by optimizing the reaction kinetics but also forms a chloride-repelling protective layer, endowing the catalyst with remarkable corrosion resistance and long-term stability (>300 h for OER at 100 mA cm–2). When assembled in an anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer (AEMWE), the Mo-Ni3S2-50∥Mo-Ni3S2-50 couple delivers excellent overall water splitting performance, requiring 1.7 V at 100 mA cm–2 and maintaining stable operation for over 165 h. This work elucidates a self-adaptive protection mechanism induced by Mo doping, offering a promising strategy for designing efficient and durable catalysts for practical seawater electrolysis and large-scale green hydrogen production.

Polyoxometalate cluster-metal oxide hybrid subnanobelts on Hf-O-Mo interfacial electron coupling for piezocatalytic reduction of dilute CO2

Yaning Gong,Dingyu Qiu,Xingchen He,Junhui Shao,Najun Li,Dongyun Chen,Hua Li,Qingfeng Xu,Jianmei Lu

Hybrid HfO 2 -PMA subnanobelts are synthesized by cluster–nuclei co-assembly. • Subnanometer belt morphology enhances piezoelectric polarization response. • Hf-O-Mo interfacial orbital coupling enhances charge separation. • PMA redox pairs act as electron buffers for efficient CO 2 activation. • Dilute CO 2 is efficiently converted into syngas via piezocatalysis. Efficient piezocatalytic conversion of dilute CO 2 into syngas offers a sustainable route for industrial flue gas valorization, yet conventional piezoelectric materials are often constrained by lattice rigidity and rapid charge recombination under weak mechanical stress. Herein, we constructed ultrathin 1D HfO 2 -phosphomolybdic acid (PMA) hybrid subnanobelts (SNBs) via cluster-nuclei co-assembly. The subnanometer architecture and flexible morphology induce an intense polarization response by leveraging the piezoelectric size effect, enabling HfO 2 -PMA SNBs to achieve remarkable CO and H 2 production rates of 4.5 and 5.8 mmol g −1 h −1 , respectively. In-situ FTIR spectra and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the asymmetric Hf-O-Mo interfacial coordination induces spontaneous electron transfer from HfO 2 to PMA, constructing a robust built-in electric field. Concurrently, the reversible redox properties of PMA clusters further enrich interfacial electron density and facilitate CO 2 adsorption and activation through Hf-O-Mo coupling, lowering the formation energy barrier of the key *COOH intermediates. This interfacial electronic structure engineering strategy establishes a novel paradigm for mechanical-energy-driven CO 2 conversion and offers a new approach for designing emerging sub-nanometer piezocatalysts. Folding-fan-like Mn–Co3O4@Mo–Co3O4 core-shell heterostructure with high-valence dual doping for efficient seawater electrolysis

Ting Bian,Jingwen Zhang,Zheng Yang,Feitao Fan,Liuting Zhang,Shitan Yan,Petr Senin,Jie Yu

Designing affordable electrocatalysts that accelerate the oxygen evolution reaction and resist chloride corrosion is key for practical seawater electrolysis. A fan-like Mn–Co 3 O 4 @Mo–Co 3 O 4 core–shell heterostructure was synthesized, where vertically aligned Mn-doped Co 3 O 4 nanowires serve as structural ribs and conformal Mo-doped Co 3 O 4 nanosheets form the fan surface. Dual Mn/Mo doping creates oxygen vacancies and modulates the metal–oxygen electronic structure, boosting intermediate adsorption and OER kinetics, while the nanosheet–nanowire framework maximizes active sites and facilitates charge and mass transport. As a result, the catalyst delivers an overpotential of 220 mV at 50 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH, outperforming other reference samples. In alkaline seawater, it maintains overpotentials of 252 and 289 mV at 50 and 100 mA cm −2 and exhibits negligible degradation over 120 h with nearly 100% Faradaic efficiency. These results demonstrate that synergistic electronic tuning and nano-architectural design enable robust electrocatalysts for efficient seawater electrolysis.

High-valent Mo-triggered lattice oxygen activity in high-entropy LDH enabling ampere-level anion exchange membrane water electrolysis

Tang Ruixin,Li Xiaolin,Li Ying,Hao Qiuyan,Huang Wenjie,Liang Limin,Deng Yida,Zheng Xuerong,Liu Hui

The sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) hinders efficient water splitting, with conventional adsorbate evolution mechanisms (AEM) facing inherent activity limitations. While the lattice oxygen activation mechanism (LOM) offers a promising pathway for enhanced activity, its practical implementation often grapples with stability issues, especially under industrial-level conditions. Herein, we report a novel ultrathin, bilayer high-entropy MoMnFeCoNiCu LDH nanosheet with a unique graphene-like wrinkled morphology. The strategic introduction of high-valent molybdenum triggers a fundamental shift in the OER mechanism from AEM to LOM, as unequivocally confirmed by in situ Raman spectroscopy and 18 O isotope gas-phase mass spectrometry. This unique Mo-triggered lattice oxygen activity leads to excellent performance: the catalyst achieves a remarkable 235 mV overpotential at 10 mA cm −2 in alkaline media, and maintains 500 h stability at 200 mA cm −2 . Crucially, when integrated into an anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer (AEMWE), our catalyst demonstrates excellent stability by maintaining consistent performance at an unprecedented 1.0 A cm −2 for 200 h, highlighting its immense potential for industrial-scale water electrolysis.

Impact of Mo Promoter and In Situ Assembled MOF on Al2O3-Supported Catalysts for the CO2-to-Methanol Reaction

Ziyuan Li,Mingsheng Luo,Zihan Xu,Lingxin Chen,Yuanyuan Fang,Hao Sun,Minwei Yi,Yutong Liu,Yiduo Huo,Roshni Rahman

In this study, in situ assembled MOFs on Al2O3-supported catalysts were prepared to compare with the traditional Al2O3-supported catalysts promoted with Ga and Mo for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol reaction. Among supported catalysts, the 5%MoZnCu/Al2O3 catalyst exhibited the highest CO2 conversion and methanol selectivity, while the 2.5%Mo-modified catalyst demonstrated the best performance among MOF-composited catalysts. MOF compositing can enhance the surface area and pore size of the catalyst, yielding increased CO2 conversion at 230 °C and 3.0 MPa. Meanwhile, Mo modification enhanced the methanol selectivity. Characterization data from XRD, Raman spectroscopy, and BET surface area analysis revealed that the crystal structure, surface morphology, pore structure, and metal valence distribution of the active components were influenced by the metallic promoters. This study provides valuable insights into catalyst development for efficient CO2 hydrogenation to produce methanol.

Enhanced catalytic activity of NiM (M = Cr, Mo, W) nanoparticles for hydrogen evolution from ammonia borane and hydrazine borane

Kangkang Yang,Qilu Yao,Wei Huang,Xiangshu Chen,Zhang-Hui Lu

In this work, a series of Ni 1-x M x (M = Cr, Mo, W) nanoparticles (NPs) have been successfully synthesized via a simple surfactant-aided co-reduction method and employed as highly efficient and cost effective catalysts for hydrogen generation from aqueous solution of ammonia borane (NH 3 BH 3 , AB) at room temperature . It is found that the as-synthesized NiM NPs (M = Cr, Mo, W) exhibit much higher catalytic performance for the hydrolysis of AB as compared to that of pure Ni NPs. In addition, among all the Ni 1-x M x (M = Cr, Mo, W) NPs, the Ni 0.9 Cr 0.1 , Ni 0.9 Mo 0.1 , and Ni 0.8 W 0.2 NPs show the highest catalytic activities with the turnover frequency (TOF) values of 10.7, 27.3 and 25.0 mol H 2 (mol metal min) −1 , respectively. Remarkably, these optimized NiM catalysts can also perform efficiently in the hydrolysis of hydrazine borane (N 2 H 4 BH 3 , HB). The present low-cost and high-performance of the NiM catalysts system may encourage the practical application of AB and HB as the promising chemical hydrogen storage materials .

1T/2H MoS2 nanoflowers decorated amorphous Mo-CoSx skeleton: A ZIF-based composite electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction

Chencheng Gao,Hongfeng Hua,Ming Du,Jinsong Liu,Xiaoyu Wu,Yong Pu,Xing'ao Li

Electronic regulation through component precise control at the atomic level of electrocatalysts has a fundamental influence on the efficiency of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, we successfully demonstrate a ZIF-based charge transfer medium for improving the electrocatalytic activity of MoS 2 towards HER. Benefit for the enough porous structure, superior electron conductivity as well as the synergistic effect from the doped atoms, the hybrids phase (1T/2H) MoS 2 nanoflowers decorated amorphous Mo-CoS x skeleton exhibited the promotional electrocatalytic performance in efficiency and stability. Specifically, an extremely low overpotential of 73 mV at the current density of −10 mA cm −2 and an impressive Tafel slope of 39.2 mV dec −1 had been achieved from the nanocomposites in an acidic condition (0.5 M H 2 SO 4 ). The satisfactory activity improvement can be ascribed to the enhancement of electronic transmission rate as well as the synergistic effects between the doped Mo element and CoS x . This work might develop a new avenue to design highly efficient multicomponent electrocatalysts towards HER.

Mechanistic insights into evolution of Schottky junctions on metal nanoparticle-loaded Mo-doped TiO2 for enhanced photothermal ammonia catalysis

Yanxu Wang,Yinjie Zhou,Yaoqi Huang,Ge He,Lili Zhang,Mingwu Tan,Shaojun Yuan

Ammonia (NH 3 ) is a hazardous pollutant that poses significant health and environmental risks, necessitating efficient removal strategies. Schottky junction-enhanced photothermal catalytic oxidation offers a promising approach to address the limitations of conventional photocatalysis, including low solar energy utilization and suboptimal catalytic performance. Here, metal nanoparticles (Ni, Pd, Pt, Cu, Ag) were loaded onto Mo-doped TiO 2 to construct Schottky junctions, resulting in significantly improved NH 3 oxidation performance. Notably, Pt uniquely outperformed other metals due to its exceptional stability in maintaining a metallic state even after prolonged exposure. In-situ DRIFTS analysis revealed a distinct ·NH 2 pathway for NH 3 oxidation on Pt/Mo-TiO 2 , differing from mechanisms observed in other metal-loaded catalysts. Combined experimental findings and DFT analyses provided direct evidence of the relationship between chemical states of metals, Schottky junction formation, and enhanced electron-hole separation. This study offers valuable theoretical insights into Schottky junction-enhanced photothermal catalysis and highlights its potential for efficient NH₃ removal under solar irradiation.
