Mixed ion–electron conductive (MIEC) bioelectronics has emerged as a state-of-the-art type of bioelectronics for bioelectrical signal monitoring. However, existing MIEC bioelectronics is limited by delamination and transmission defects in bioelectrical signals. Herein, a topological MXene network enhanced MIEC hydrogel bioelectronics that simultaneously exhibits both electrical and mechanical property enhancement while maintaining adhesion and biocompatibility, providing an ideal MIEC bioelectronics for electrophysiological signal monitoring, is introduced. Compared with nontopology hydrogel bioelectronics, the MXene topology increases the dynamic stability of bioelectronics by a factor of 8.4 and the electrical signal by a factor of 10.1 and reduces the energy dissipation by a factor of 20.2. Besides, the topology-enhanced hydrogel bioelectronics exhibits low impedance (<25 Ω) at physiologically relevant frequencies and negligible impedance fluctuation after 5000 stretch cycles. The creation of multichannel bioelectronics with high-fidelity muscle action mapping and gait recognition was made possible by achieving such performance.

Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets are employed to graft ionic liquids via Michael addition or Schiff base reactions, with polydopamine acting as a bridging agent. This process creates a robust and synergistic tribological interface when the hybrids are used as lubricating additives in oil. The structural hybridization harnesses the high surface area and weak interlayer forces of MXenes, along with the thermal stability and film-forming capabilities of ionic liquids. The study reveals that lubricants fortified with these functionalized nanosheets exhibit a notable reduction in the average coefficient of friction from 0.188 to 0.112 and an 81.7% decrease in wear volume. These results highlight the untapped potential of structurally optimized, ionic liquid-functionalized MXenes as a transformative advancement in the field of tribology.

MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) is an important category of two-dimensional (2D) materials due to its distinctive metallic conductivity and adjustable surface chemistry. The exceptional benefits of heterointerface and defects or viods, combined with the distinct electromagnetic (EM) properties, inject boundless potential into the advancement of MXene-based absorbers for EM absorbing materials. However, conventional synthetic methods depend on chemical etching of MAX powders (Ti 3 AlC 2 ) using hazardous HF or similar substances, resulting in MXene sheets with fluorine termination and limited stability in colloidal dispersions under ambient conditions. Herein, varied synthetic routes were proposed to prepare MXenes with different terminal groups by the fluoride-based salts, fluoride-free molten salts , and alkali etching. 2D MXene nanosheets with abundant surface groups are excellent EM absorbing materials, and the MXene etched by the Lewis acid CuCl 2 delivered remarkable reflection loss ( RL ) value of −47.56 dB at 2.5 mm and broad bandwidth of 4.8 GHz due to promoted interfacial polarization. By conducting a thorough examination of the structural changes in MXenes, this study aims to propose a viable method for delaminating single-layer MXene and elucidate the EM absorption mechanisms.

Hydrogen energy, as an efficient and clean energy carrier, shows great potential in fuel cells and energy storage systems. However, the flammable and explosive nature of hydrogen poses a serious challenge to its safe use, and the development of highly sensitive and fast-response hydrogen sensors is crucial. In this work, a novel ZnO/MXene based gas sensor was developed for applied in hydrogen detection by using electrostatic self-assembly technology. The effect of the MXene ratio on enhancing the hydrogen-sensing properties of ZnO and the heterostructure synergistic sensing mechanism of the ZnO/MXene composite were elucidated. Results showed that the composite material exhibits optimal performance when the mass ratio of ZnO to MXene is 10:1. The ZnO/MXene composites exhibited a sensitivity of 702 at 100 ppm hydrogen, representing a 26 % improvement over pure ZnO, and achieved notable response at an ultralow concentration of 50 ppb (247). Meanwhile, the response/recovery times of composites were shortened to 5.4 s and 120.6 s, with a 74 % improvement in response time compared with pure ZnO. In gas selectivity tests, composites indicate pronounced affinity for hydrogen. Furthermore, in the detection of mixed gases created by simulated lithium battery thermal runaway, performing an average response time reduced by 71.2 % compared to pure ZnO, an average recovery time reduced by 12.6 %, and an average response value enhanced by 41.8 %, which demonstrated the potential of ZnO/MXene sensors in identifying risks within Li-ion battery systems. This work will provide a theoretical basis for the design and application of high-performance hydrogen sensors.

Ga-based liquid metal (LM) suffers from severe corrosiveness toward chips and heatsink metals, posing a major obstacle to its practical use. Herein, we propose MXene films as barrier layers to mitigate Ga-induced corrosion. Combining first-principles density functional theory and experimental analyses, anti-corrosion performance and reliability were systematically evaluated. MXene nanosheets were found to self-assemble on Cu surfaces via van der Waals interactions, providing an interfacial adhesion force of 17.23 mN. The coatings effectively inhibit Ga corrosion while maintaining high thermal conductivity and long-term stability. This strategy offers a simple and efficient solution to corrosion issues in Ga-based TIM applications.

MXene's configuration, whether it is aggregated or dispersed in a monolayer, determines the specific application areas and even greatly influences the intrinsic properties of MXene. However, how to desirably control MXene's configuration is challenging. Here, a simple, additive-free, chemical reaction-free, and scalable strategy to optionally and reversibly regulate MXene's ordered stacking and delamination of MXene aggregates (AM) is reported. Just by controlled freezing of MXene aqueous dispersions, the aggregation percentage, delamination percentage, and interlayer spacing of AM can be finely tuned. Experimental results reveal that the freezing-induced aggregation and delamination effects can be explained by the squeezing action of growing ice grains on the MXene excluded/concentrated between ice grains and the expanding action caused by the ice formation between AM lamellae, respectively. The dominance between them depends on the freezing parameter-influenced ice nucleation sites, numbers, and ice grain sizes. This work not only contributes to the preparation, storage, and practical applications of MXene, but also opens a new and green avenue for controlling materials’ assembly structures.

MXenes are two-dimensional materials with high electrical conductivity, adjustable composition, and tunable surface terminations, holding promise for supercapacitors (SCs). However, the susceptibility to interlayer restacking and the attachment of inactive -F terminations reduce their capacitances and rate performance. To resolve these issues, electrochemistry-driven cation intercalation (ECI) followed by calcination is proposed to unclog the interlayers and modify surface chemistry simultaneously. It is found that Mn-modified Ti 3 C 2 T z MXene exhibits exceptional volumetric capacitance (1655.5 F cm −3 at 1 mV s −1 , 1.5 times higher than that of pristine Ti 3 C 2 T z ) and excellent rate performance (72.3 % retention from 1 A g −1 to 50 A g −1 ) due to the unblocked interlayers and the increased -O terminations. Density Functional Theory (DFT) results reveal that the intercalated Mn 2+ displayed the largest formation energy difference, manifesting a great driving force to form active -O terminations, which is crucial for improving electrochemical performance. Kinetic analysis reveals that the intercalated Mn 2+ increases the termination-related capacitances (pseudocapacitance and diffusion-controlled capacitance) significantly. Symmetric and asymmetric SCs demonstrate high energy densities at high powers, showing the advance of the Mn-intercalated Ti 3 C 2 T z . The findings clarify how metal cation intercalation affects MXene performance, providing insights for designing MXene-based electrodes in energy storage applications.

MXenes have immense potential in electrochemical energy storage owing to their outstanding physicochemical properties such as their oxygen-containing groups that impart additional pseudocapacitance to acidic electrolytes. However, during electrode assembly, MXene nanosheets undergo restacking because of hydrogen bonding and van der Waals forces, which causes electrolyte ions to traverse long diffusion pathways between the long and narrow nanosheets. Exploiting the oxidative properties of Ti 3 C 2 T x , a hierarchical porous MXene film with micro-, meso - and macroporous structures was successfully prepared using a simple hydrothermal oxidation and etching process to create micro- and mesoporous structures, followed by ice templating to prepare three-dimensional (3D) linked macroporous structures. Because these hierarchical pores have synergistic effects on electrochemical activity and electrolyte ion diffusion, the film attained a specific capacitance of 539F/g at a current density of 2 A/g when it was used as a supercapacitor electrode, which corresponds to one of the highest values reported for MXene-based electrodes. The film retained 83% of its specific capacitance when the current density was increased to 40 A/g, and exhibited excellent cycling stability. By using this multi-porous MXene design, synergistic improvement in ion diffusion was successfully realized and thus a new strategy to prepare high-performance supercapacitor electrode materials was developed.

This work focuses on the hydrothermal aging of two-dimensional layered Ti3C2Tx(MXene)/epoxy (EP) nanocomposites. MXene/EP composites were successfully prepared by homogeneously dispersing multilayer MXene (m-MXene) and few-layer MXene (f-MXene) into the curing agent, methyl nadic anhydride (MNA). Considering the application, the MXene loading was designed to be 0.1 wt.%. Characterization included the characteristics of MXene, the water absorption behavior of the resin and composite samples, the glass transition temperatures (Tg) in various states, and the tensile strength evolution during aging. The curing behavior of the MXene composites was also discussed to facilitate an understanding of the processability. The results showed that MNA can chemically bond with MXene to obtain a stable suspension. The addition of MXene increased the curing characteristic temperature of the system, but the change in the activation energy of the curing reaction was minimal. The addition of MXene decreased the crosslink density of the epoxy resin, leading to a decrease in theTgvalue of the initial samples. After hydrothermal aging, theTgof pure EP decreased by 46.9 °C, and re-drying the samples did not fully restore theTg. However, theTgof the MXene/EP system decreased by only 8.9 °C (m-MXene) and 9.5 °C (f-MXene), respectively, and theTgvalues of the samples were fully restored to their pre-aging levels via re-drying. Experiments with immersion at 25 °C and 100 °C showed that the difference in water absorption behavior between the MXene/EP and pure EP systems was minimal. Tensile tests showed that the addition of MXene increased the initial strength of the resin system by 14.7% (m-MXene) and 20.9% (f-MXene). After 400 h of hydrothermal aging, the tensile strength retention of the pure EP samples was 69.1%, while the strength retention of the MXene/EP samples was 85.3% (m-MXene) and 83.0% (f-MXene). The combined results demonstrate that the addition of MXene with a low loading of only 0.1% can effectively improve the hydrothermal resistance of epoxy resins.

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) have become highly promising candidates for large-scale energy storage applications due to their inherent safety, cost-effectiveness, and environmentally friendly properties. Nevertheless, issues like the growth of zinc dendrites, undesirable side reactions at interfaces, and uneven ion distribution pose significant barriers to their widespread commercial adoption. Hydrogel electrolytes, with their cross-linked 3D networks, offer a solution by suppressing dendrite growth and preventing short circuits. Traditional fabrication approaches based on hydrogel synthesis and subsequent electrolyte immersion often yield inhomogeneous salt distribution profiles, consequently introducing substantial variations in electrochemical properties across different production batches. To address this, we developed an in situ synthesis strategy for MXene-reinforced polyacrylamide–poly(vinyl alcohol) (PAM–PVA) interpenetrating network (IPN) hydrogel electrolytes, which effectively regulates microstructure to inhibit dendrite formation. The composite hydrogel electrolytes exhibit exceptional mechanical properties (∼300% tensile strain), enabling robust resistance to dendrite penetration. Moreover, the synergistic interaction between MXene’s 2D lamellar structure and zinc trifluoromethanesulfonate (Zn(OTf)2) enhances ion transport uniformity and optimizes interfacial reactions. Electrochemical evaluations reveal exceptional durability: Zn//Zn symmetric cells maintain stable operation for more than 1900 h at 1 mA cm–2 without dendritic formation, whereas Zn//MnO2 full cells retain 70.4% of their capacity after 1500 cycles at a current density of 2 A g–1. This work provides insights into the structure–activity relationship of MXene-reinforced hydrogels. It elucidates the mechanistic role of MXene-based composite hydrogels in suppressing zinc dendrite formation, thereby establishing both a theoretical framework and a practical methodology for designing high-performance electrolytes for AZIBs. These findings provide critical advances toward developing reliable and scalable aqueous zinc-ion battery systems suitable for practical grid-scale energy storage implementations.

As a new two-dimensional material, MXene has caused extensive research in field of supercapacitor, electromagnetic shielding, strain sensing field due to its excellent mechanical properties and electrical conductivity. MXene with good water dispersibility can be used as an ideal nano-material to enhance the conductivity of hydrogels. However, MXene is easy to accumulate in the hydrogel system, and there are rare articles on MXene hydrogels. In this paper, we combine cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and MXene to prepare CNC/MXene nanosheets and take advantage of CNC’s excellent dispersibility in water and the electrostatic repulsion between CNCs to avoid the accumulating of MXene and enhance the mechanical properties of the hydrogel. Based on it, we prepared a physical–chemical double crosslinking and double-network CNC/MXene hydrogel by in situ polymerization and cycle freeze-thaw method. The CNC/MXene hydrogel we prepared exhibited excellent mechanical properties; it could be stretched to 7 times its original length and could reach 1.025 MPa tensile stress. When the compression strain was 80%, the compression stress could reach 1.1 MPa. After unloading the compression pressure, it could rapidly return to its original length within 0.17 s, which would impact greatly on the practical application of CNC/MXene hydrogel. What's more, the conductivity of it was up to 0.4 S/m and the thermal conductivity was 0.38 W/mK. So, the hydrogel prepared by us has a wide range of application prospects in the fields of human motion monitoring, electronic skin, man–machine interface, etc.
