Surface hybridization of π-conjugate structure cyclized polyacrylonitrile and radial microsphere shaped TiO2 for reducing U(VI) to U(IV)

Yachao Xu,Hongsen Zhang,Qi Liu,Jingyuan Liu,Rongrong Chen,Jing Yu,Jiahui Zhu,Rumin Li,Jun Wang

It is still a challenge to obtain uranium (U) adsorbents with high selectivity , excellent cycle stability and excellent performance through design and synthesis. In this paper, the TiO 2 /CPAN-AO catalyst was prepared by the hydrothermal method combined with high temperature cyclization dehydrogenation . TiO 2 /CPAN-AO has excellent photocatalytic properties, which can reduce U(VI) to U(IV) quickly and selectively. The generated Z-type heterojunction promotes the reduction ability of photogenerated electrons, and obtains great selectivity to UO 2 2+ (Uranyl ions) through the AO group. TiO 2 /CPAN-AO with π-electron conjugated structure broadens the spectral range through surface hybridization and prolongs the lifetime of photo-generated charges. Under the induction of light, the uranium extraction capacity of TiO 2 /CPAN-AO after 5 h of irradiation is about 2.38 g/g. TiO 2 /CPAN-AO is a catalyst with enhanced adsorption capacity, making it possible to extract uranium from large-scale natural seawater in the future.

Liangmei Rao,Peicong Zhou,Peng Liu,Xinyu Lu,Xuemin Duan,Yangping Wen,Yifu Zhu,Jingkun Xu

Green and sustainable development provides a new idea for solving environmental pollution issues of rural biomass wastes. Amorphous molybdenum sulfide (a-MoS x ) nanocomposite based on biochar microsphere (BM) as voltametric sensing platform for smart analysis of baicalin in real sample was facilely prepared. Pomelo peel was employed as the carbon source for improving electronic conductivity and environmental stability and electrocatalytic capacity of a-MoS x . A mixture consisted of the precursor of both a-MoS x and BM were treated by a co-hydrothermal method. The a-MoS x nanocomposite with porous BM was formed by centrifuging, washing, drying, pulverizing, and calcining. The structure and properties of the as-obtained nanocomposite were characterized, and the electrochemical behaviors of baicalin, parametric conditions and performance of the as-prepared sensor were investigated. Peak currents recorded by differential pulse voltammetry is proportional to baicalin concentrations in wide linear ranges from 10 nM to 5 μM with a low limit of detection of 2 nM. Machine learning algorithms like least squares support vector machine and artificial neural network was built to realize smart analysis and digital output for baicalin. Good cyclic stability, excellent voltammetric response, and satisfactory practicability will provide a promising electrochemical sensing platform for facile preparation of two-dimension nanomaterials functionalized with biochar derived from agroforestry biomass.

A stable nanosilver decorated phosphorene nanozyme with phosphorus-doped porous carbon microsphere for intelligent sensing of 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine

Yingying Sheng,Yifu Zhu,María Luisa Cerón,Yufu Yi,Peng Liu,Peng Wang,Ting Xue,María Belén Camarada,Yangping Wen

Nanozyme based on the silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) decorated highly water-oxygen stable phosphorene (BP) nanohybrid with phosphorus-doped porous carbon microspheres (P-PCMs) is applied as an intelligent sensing platform for the electrochemical detection of 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) as a biomarker of oxidative DNA damage in human urine sample. The density functional theory (DFT) is use for investigating the effect of silver on the conductivity level of BP and discussing a possible mechanism for the electrocatalytic oxidation of 8-OHdG. The Ag + is in-situ reduced as AgNPs that grows onto the BP surface for the controllable preparation of BP-AgNPs with effective surface passivation among different metal ions decorated BP. P-PCMs with 4.9-fold enhancement in specific surface area (1636.73 m 2 g −1 ) are prepared by hydrothermal carbonization of α-cyclodextrin as carbon sources, then calcinate in the presence of phosphoric acid as an activator and dopant. P-PCMs-BP-AgNPs are prepared by the ultrasound-assisted liquid-phase exfoliation with the addition of Ag + , and both P-PCMs and black phosphorus crystals are sufficiently grinded. The P-PCMs-BP-AgNPs nanohybrid displays good long-term water-oxygen stability, extraordinary specific surface area, superior electrocatalytic capacity with 303-fold enhancement, enzyme-like characteristics with I max of 100 μA and K m of 29 μM. The machine learning (ML) model with artificial neural network (ANN) algorithm is employed for the intelligent output of 8-OHdG in real sample with acceptable recovery in work range from 0.2 to 125 μM.

Insight into β-cyclodextrin polymer microsphere as a potential filtration reducer in water-based drilling fluids for high temperature application

Hanyi Zhong,Xin Gao,Zhengsong Qiu,Baojiang Sun,Weian Huang,Jia Li

Controlling the filtration of water-based drilling fluid effectively in high temperature environment is a great challenge in drilling engineering. In this study, β-cyclodextrin polymer microspheres (β-CDPMs) were synthesized by crosslinking between β-cyclodextrin and epichlorohydrin via inverse emulsion polymerization and employed as filtration reducers. The standard American Petroleum Institute filtration test showed that the β-CDPMs can only perform the enhanced filtration control ability at temperatures above 160 °C, and can tolerate the temperature resistance up to 240 °C without significant influence of rheology. As the thermal aging temperature is above 160 °C, numerous nano carbon spheres and nanostructured composites generated due to the occurrence of hydrothermal reaction. These high temperature stable nanoparticles bridged across the nano sized gaps and participated into forming dense filter cake, contributing to excellent filtration control. The filtration control mechanism proposed in this study opened a novel avenue for high temperature filtration control in water-based drilling fluids.

PLGA microsphere-based composite hydrogel for dual delivery of ciprofloxacin and ginsenoside Rh2 to treat Staphylococcus aureus-induced skin infections

Minghao Sun,Chune Zhu,Jieyu Long,Chao Lu,Xin Pan,Chuanbin Wu

When antibiotic-resistant pathogenic bacteria pose a high threat to human health, bacterial multidrug efflux pumps become major contributors to the high-level antibiotic resistance in most microorganisms. Since traditional antibiotics are still indispensable currently, we report a dual drug delivery system to maximize the antibacterial efficacy of antibiotics by inhibiting efflux pumps in bacteria before their exposure to antibiotics. In this research, a microsphere/hydrogel composite was constructed from ciprofloxacin (Cip)-loaded poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) microspheres and ginsenoside Rh2 (G-Rh2) dispersed thermo-sensitive hydrogel to treat skin infections. In vitro drug release studies indicated that while G-Rh2 in hydrogel presented a faster and short-term release manner to rapidly inhibit the NorA efflux pumps, Cip showed a sustained and long-term release behavior to provide a local high concentration gradient for facilitating drug percutaneous penetration. The combination of Cip and G-Rh2 demonstrated a high degree of synergism against both methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), hence significantly improving their in vitro antibacterial activity and efficiency. Moreover, the antibacterial performance of the microsphere/hydrogel composite with a sequential release profile is superior to that of other formulations in mouse model of MRSA skin infections, indicating its great potential to treat antibiotic-resistant skin infections.

A Novel Multiplex Mycotoxin Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy Immunoassay Using Functional Gold Nanotags on a Silica Photonic Crystal Microsphere Biochip

Jialong Sun,Wei Li,Xuerui Zhu,Saisai Jiao,Yunwei Chang,Siwei Wang,Shijie Dai,Ruimin Xu,Menghua Dou,Qianjin Li,Jianlin Li

A novel multiplex mycotoxin surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) immunoassay was established for the first time on different artificial antigen-modified silica photonic crystal microspheres (SPCMs), which can be integrated into a biochip array to achieve multiplex detection using corresponding antibody-functionalized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) as the SERS nanotag. The unique optical structure of SPCMs is helpful to find the detection spots easily, accommodate a large amount of probe molecules, and enhance the Raman signal intensity. Such enhancement was confirmed by the simulation result, showing the electric field enhancing effect in SPCMs with AuNPs being 7 times. A competitive SERS immunoassay was established using antigen-modified SPCMs and mycotoxins to compete for binding antibody-functionalized SERS nanotags, displaying broad linear detection ranges of 0.001–0.1 ng/mL for aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), 0.01–10 ng/mL for ochratoxin A (OTA), and 0.001–0.1 ng/mL for zearalenone (ZEN) and low detection limits of 0.82 pg/mL for AFB1, 1.43 pg/mL for OTA, and 1.00 pg/mL for ZEN. In the spiked cereal samples, recovery rates of the method were measured in the range of 70.35–118.04% for the three mycotoxins, which was in agreement with that of the traditional enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method. The SERS immunoassay for mycotoxin detection also showed high specificity and good repeatability and reproducibility. The new microsphere-based SERS immunoassay biochip only requires a one-step reaction and overcomes the disadvantages of fluorescence and chemiluminescence background signals. The work paves the way for further developing SERS-based microsphere suspension arrays for new targets.

Carbonaceous microsphere/nanofiber composite superhydrophilic membrane with enhanced anti-adhesion property towards oil and anionic surfactant: Membrane fabrication and applications

Yuhuan Lv,Yajie Ding,Jianqiang Wang,Bing He,Simin Yang,Kai Pan,Fu Liu

Fouling issue is the key obstacle that limited the practical applications of superwetting oil/water separation membrane. Dispersed oil phase and soluble surfactants in the emulsion are the primary foulants during separation of oil/water mixtures. Therefore, developing membranes with anti-adhesion property towards both dispersed phase and surfactant is of great importance. In this study, a superhydrophilic, underwater superoleophobic composite membrane with excellent antifouling property for separating oil-in-water emulsions stabilized by anionic surfactants was fabricated. Briefly, carboxylated carbonaceous microspheres were synthesized and loaded on nanofibrous membrane through a facile hydrothermal strategy. Acrylic acid was introduced to the hydrothermal process to manipulate the surface charge of carbonaceous microspheres. The fabricated membrane showed excellent anti-adhesion property towards dispersed phase (toluene) due to the improved surface wettability and hydration property. Underwater oil contact angle was up to 160 ± 1° (e.g., M8-2 membrane). Meanwhile, the fabricated membrane exhibited excellent anti-adhesion performance for oil-in-water emulsions stabilized by anionic surfactants (e.g. sodium laurylsulfonate) due to electrostatic repulsion. Therefore, the membrane can maintain the permeability as high as 41,020 ± 805 L m -2  h -1  bar −1 even after ten times of usage. The construction strategy and the antifouling analysis presented in the current study may give more opportunities for the understanding of superwetting oil/water separation process.

Experimental and DFT studies on the selective adsorption of Pd(II) from wastewater by pyromellitic-functionalized poly(glycidyl methacrylate) microsphere

Jiling Zhao,Chen Wang,Shixing Wang,Yang Zhou,Bing Zhang

Palladium wastewater is produced from various industrial activities and seriously pollutes the environment. In here, a new adsorbent (PMDA-PGMA) was manufactured by functionalizing poly(glycidyl methacrylate) microspheres with pyromellitic acid and introduced to recover Pd(II) from wastewater. The main influencing factors including pH, palladium ionic content, reaction time and temperature were evaluated. The selectivity , reusability and sorption mechanism have been systematically examined. The pH 2 was optimal for Pd(II) adsorption and only 300 min was required to reach maximum adsorption capacity about 206.71 mg/g. The experimental data were is in tune with pseudo-secondary kinetics and Langmuir model well. So, the Pd(II) adsorption process was monolayer chemical adsorption. Thermodynamic parameters indicate that Pd(II) adsorption on PMDA-PGMA was an endothermic reaction . The main adsorption mechanism is ion exchange, electrostatic attraction and coordination between palladium ions and pyromellitic acid groups. Additionally, PMDA-PGMA can be easily regenerated by 10% thiourea and can be recycled at least five times. PMDA-PGMA exhibited good selective extraction ability for Pd(II) and effectively separated Pd(II) (≥95%) from laboratory wastewater in the presence divers metal ions . Density functional theory calculations show that PMDA-PGMA combines with Pd(II) through monodentate N atoms and bidentate O groups. The application prospect of PMDA-PGMA is encouraging in removing palladium from wastewater due to its high adsorption capacity and better reusability.

Antibody-Functional Microsphere-Integrated Filter Chip with Inertial Microflow for Size–Immune-Capturing and Digital Detection of Circulating Tumor Cells

Yi Su,Qingchang Tian,Dingyi Pan,Lanlan Hui,Yanni Chen,Qi Zhang,Wei Tian,Jie Yu,Shen Hu,Yang Gao,Dahong Qian,Tian Xie,Ben Wang

Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in blood is the direct cause of tumor metastasis. The isolation and detection of CTCs in the whole blood is very important and of clinical value in early diagnosis, postoperative review, and personalized treatment. It is difficult to separate all types of CTCs that efficiently rely on a single path due to cancer cell heterogenicity. Here, we designed a new kind of “filter chip” for the retention of CTCs with very high efficiency by integrating the effects of cell size and specific antigens on the surface of tumor cells. The filter chip consists of a semicircle arc and arrays and can separate large-scale CTC microspheres, which combined with CTCs automatically. We synthesized interfacial zinc oxide coating with nanostructure on the surface of the microsphere to increase the specific surface area to enhance the capturing efficiency of CTCs. Microspheres, trapped in the arrays, would entrap CTCs, too. The combination of the three kinds of strategies resulted in more than 90% capture efficiency of different tumor cell lines. Furthermore, it is easy to find and isolate the circulating tumor cells from the chip as tumor cells would be fixed inside the structure of a filter chip. To avoid the high background contamination when a few CTCs are surrounded by millions of nontarget cells, a digital detection method was applied to improve the detection sensitivity. The CTCs in the whole blood were specifically labeled by the antibody–DNA conjugates and detected via the DNA of the conjugates with a signal amplification. The strategy of the antibody–functional microsphere-integrated microchip for cell sorting and detection of CTCs may find broad implications that favor the fundamental cancer biology research, the precise diagnosis, and monitoring of cancer in the clinics.

Environment-responsive dendrobium polysaccharide hydrogel embedding manganese microsphere as a post-operative adjuvant to boost cascaded immune cycle against melanoma

Nan Gao,Yiran Huang,Shisuo Jing,Meng Zhang,Ergang Liu,Lu Qiu,Jing Huang,Bahtiyor Muhitdinov,Yongzhuo Huang

Rationale: Surgical resection is a primary treatment for solid tumors, but high rates of tumor recurrence and metastasis post-surgery present significant challenges. Manganese (Mn 2+ ), known to enhance dendritic cell-mediated cancer immunotherapy by activating the cGAS-STING pathway, has potential in post-operative cancer management. However, achieving prolonged and localized delivery of Mn 2+ to stimulate immune responses without systemic toxicity remains a challenge. Methods: We developed a post-operative microenvironment-responsive dendrobium polysaccharide hydrogel embedded with Mn 2+ -pectin microspheres (MnP@DOP-Gel). This hydrogel system releases Mn 2+ -pectin microspheres (MnP) in response to ROS, and MnP shows a dual effect in vitro : promoting immunogenic cell death and activating immune cells (dendritic cells and macrophages). The efficacy of MnP@DOP-Gel as a post-surgical treatment and its potential for immune activation were assessed in both subcutaneous and metastatic melanoma models in mice, exploring its synergistic effect with anti-PD1 antibody. Result: MnP@DOP-Gel exhibited ROS-responsive release of MnP, which could exert dual effects by inducing immunogenic cell death of tumor cells and activating dendritic cells and macrophages to initiate a cascade of anti-tumor immune responses. In vivo experiments showed that the implanted MnP@DOP-Gel significantly inhibited residual tumor growth and metastasis. Moreover, the combination of MnP@DOP-Gel and anti-PD1 antibody displayed superior therapeutic potency in preventing either metastasis or abscopal brain tumor growth. Conclusions: MnP@DOP-Gel represents a promising drug-free strategy for cancer post-operative management. Utilizing this Mn 2+ -embedding and ROS-responsive delivery system, it regulates surgery-induced immune responses and promotes sustained anti-tumor responses, potentially increasing the effectiveness of surgical cancer treatments.

Modified hollow glass microsphere in-situ reinforced polyurethane/polydimethylsiloxane composite coating with self-cleaning and durable passive radiative cooling behaviors

Weiwei Fan,Heng Li,Zhonghui Wang,Huan Wei,Jun Xiang,Haojun Fan

Passive radiative cooling technology has been widely concerned due to its merits of energy free and zero pollution. However, most of the radiative cooling materials are highly susceptible to contamination from solid dirt and rainwater , which greatly weak their cooling effectiveness. Herein, a hydrophobic radiative cooling composite coating , composed of polyurethane/polydimethylsiloxane (PU/PDMS) and modified hollow glass microsphere (MHGM), was fabricated through in situ reinforcing and phase separation processes. By the synergistic effect of MHGM filler and the surrounded microporous PU/PDMS matrix, the PU7/PDMS3-MHGM coating possessed strong solar reflectance and thermal emittance in the atmospheric transparency window of 0.906 and 0.961, respectively, resulting in sub-ambient daytime cooling of 8.1 °C and nighttime cooling of 3.9 °C. In addition, the composite coating exhibited a higher water contact angle of 139°, the dust and muddy water are unable to stain on its surface during the rinsing process, showing self-cleaning effect. More encouragingly, the composite coating still remained above 93.8 % passive radiative cooling efficiency even if after 100 cycles muddy water rinsing, certainly, such self-cleaning provides assurance for the sustainable application of radiative cooling coatings.

Development of a Time-Resolved Fluorescent Microsphere Test Strip for Rapid, On-Site, and Sensitive Detection of Picoxystrobin in Vegetables

Junjie Chen,Lidan Chen,Yongyi Zhang,Siyi Xiang,Ruizhou Zhang,Yudong Shen,Jiaming Liao,Huahui Xie,Jinyi Yang

Picoxystrobin (PIC) is a fungicide extensively used for disease control in both crops and vegetables. Residues of PIC in vegetables pose a potential threat to human health due to their accumulation in the food chain. In this study, a specific PIC monoclonal antibody (mAb) was developed by introducing a carboxylic acid arm into PIC and subsequently preparing a hapten and an artificial antigen. A sensitive and rapid time-resolved fluorescence immunochromatographic assay (TRFICA) was established based on the mAb. Subsequently, using a time-resolved fluorescent microsphere (TRFM) as signal probe, mAbs and microspheres were covalently coupled. The activated pH, the mAb diluents, the mAb amount, and the probe amount were optimized. Under optimized conditions, the quantitative limits of detection (qLOD) of PIC in cucumber, green pepper, and tomato using TRFICA were established at 0.61, 0.26, and 3.44 ng/mL, respectively; the 50% inhibiting concentrations (IC50) were 11.76, 5.29, and 37.68 ng/mL, respectively. The linear ranges were 1.81–76.71, 0.80–35.04, and 8.32–170.55 ng/mL, respectively. The average recovery in cucumber, green pepper, and tomato samples ranged from 79.8% to 105.0%, and the corresponding coefficients of variation (CV) were below 14.2%. In addition, 15 vegetable samples were selected and compared with the results obtained using ultra-performance liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). The results revealed a high degree of concordance between the proposed method and UPLC-MS/MS. In conclusion, the devised TRFICA method is a valuable tool for rapid, on-site, and highly sensitive detection of PIC residues in vegetables. Keywords:picoxystrobin;monoclonal antibody;time-resolved fluorescence immunochromatographic assay;vegetables
